It's surprising ysalamiri weren't used against force users more often in Star Wars. The fact that they named a lightsaber form after them means they were no big secret. That's why I thought it was a bad idea to use their names in a form.
I think they were rare (only on one planet), very hard to get (planet is hard to get to and VERY dangerous), and very illegal (jedi and sith didn't like them).
As mentioned previously, ysalamiri were very difficult to obtain. They appeared only on one planet, and were very difficult to remove from their perches on it. They were also of little to no use when used singly, as they only generated fields of useful size when in large groups. The additional problem of the ysalamiri were that they were useless to anything other than pure force attacks, so smart opponents could use blasters, a lightsaber, or even a thrown object (they just couldn’t control the movement of the object after it entered the field). Bringing full usefulness out of the ysalamiri took a similarly smart user in order to put their unique abilities to full effect.

The Dark Side has two methods of access. The most well known is that of passion and using your rage and pain for power. This is seen in Maul, Sidious, and Vader. The other method is cold callousness. A complete detachment of compassion and mercy. This is seen in Dooku, Caedus, and Traya. The second method is perfect for a Makashi darksider.

Always loved Dooku’s curved lightsaber hilt and one handed form. If I was a Jedi I’d definitely want to learn this style of combat. So precise and swift, yet so powerful!
Want to hear something funny? I am a mix of form 1 and form 2. I am a fencer, but I do saber fencing, which uses broad, wide movement, but is extremely fast and precise. Being both efficient and simple. Footwork is even more important in saber than the other two fencing types.
So Forms 1 and 2 are rooted in the Light makes sense. I assume Form 3 is the same, since it's all about defense, and you know what Yoda would say, "A Jedi uses the Force for knowledge and defense, never to attack." And Form 7 is defiantly rooted in the Dark, my knowledge of Form 4 is more limited so I don't know where that one falls, Form 5 I'm not sure about since it is about attacking or at least counter attacking so I'm not sure if it's full-on Light or leans into the Dark a bit, and as for Form 6 well it's a combination of the previous 5 Forms together a jack of all trades and master of none, so even if Forms 4 and 5 lean into the Dark the other three are Light so there's more Light then Dark so it should be rooted in the Light too, especially since true masters of Form 6 can use it to control the pace of the fight to dictate where the outcome goes to best benefit themselves and spare their opponents lives if they can by completely controlling the fight so it seems mostly Light to me.
Theres a great video by Jensaraai1 on the theoretical origins of each form. Forms IV and V were created because there was a desire by many Jedi to take a more active role in rooting out crime, and while Form III allowed for Survivial, it didn't necessarily ensure victory, thus Form IV was created to supplement Form III and be the tool to attack social decay at its root, thus it was designed to work in concert with Form III and be the Yang to Form III's Yin. Form V was made with the idea that rather than supplementing Form III, it should just be replaced, by taking the defensive maneuvers of Form III and turning them into offensive maneuvers, the defensive Circle of Shelter becoming the offensive Barrior of Blades, and deflecting a blaster bolt harmlessly away became deflecting it back at the attacker, while keeping the emphasis on mobility Ataru was spearheading. While I'd say both were aggressive, Ataru was meant to be balanced by Soresu, while Shien was meant to be self balancing and thus both rooted in the light. I think this active policing mentality also influenced Juyo, and I'd say while all of the forms are rooted in the light on the Jedi Side, only Shii-Cho and Juyo, which I believe was an extension of the Emotional Heat of Form I, had active emotional engagement and thus carried a higher risk of Darkside corruption.
@@Cyclonus5 I... I can't quite parse what you're saying. a technique that helps one resist the Force attacks of an enemy, and is also excellent for lightsaber combat. It does more damage, but it leaves you vulnerable to other attacks. Use it against others wielding the Force or lightsabers, but not against anyone else. -Kreia
My favorite form. I would have Count Dooku’s lightsaber hilt made from Beskar with a Yellow lightsaber blade. I would follow the path of the Jedi Sentinel as a Jedi Investigator.
Form 2 was about elogance and dancing around your opponents defenses you don’t try to smash through you try to cut around and slowly dismantle your opponent
I'd love to see a video series going into the differences in jedi and sith variants of the forms. But I'd also need to disagree with "stoic calm" not being a sith trait. Only neophyte sith or marauders were rage monsters. The sith lords (even Bane when not on a killing spree) tended to be cold and seemingly emotionless. Darth Vader in Rebels was most notably described as sending a literal chill down your spine. The reason for this is explained in the Darth bane novels. The sith are fueled by emotion like gasoline in a fire, and that fire in turn fuels their emotions. making them more intense...but sith masters don't just give into rage like a real life berserker. Instead, they keep the cycle going, building within them until they unleash it. In effect, the sith can seem colder and more emotionless than the jedi (on the surface) because everything in them is feeding into their cycle of power. To scream and lunge around like a rabid beast would be a waste of energies that could be fueling the dark side. So Makashi, even if it seems paradoxical, is probably one of the best for the sith (especially the banite sith) since it expresses that cold, focused hate. That need to pick your opponent apart so they know they're outmatched.
I think the lack of Makashi users is also the downfall of the Jedi in the old republic. Like any and all forms, it’s needed even in times of peace. Plus it keeps you sharp and on your toes. Sometimes literally when facing the count.
I like the idea of mixing makashi with the power of djem-so/shien but not so much as to upset the grace of form two perhaps it would make up for the lack of powerful blows enough to make it have a better offence and defence against blasters
I personally prefer Shien for ita higher technical focus but most saber schools right now only have Djem-So because they dont want to touch the Riverse blade, but Djem-So and Makashi share a focus on Linear dynamics so they are likely more compatible.
@@Cyclonus5 that's what I thought about it I came up with the idea of using dookus philosophy on focusing on just one saber style and ignoring the others so as to master form 2 perfectly then add in a bit of djem-so and shien that way your good against saber fighters blaster users and other combatants I'm a larger guy myself so moving around alot is counterproductive so I like the smooth easy moves of form 2 however I cannot deny my physical prowess so djem-so and shien add that back into the mix without losing touch with form 2 the main idea is to focus as much as possible on just those forms and not even really master djem-so or Shein just use particular moves from each to create my own style
@@freekill1018 Considering Dooku had enough knowledge of the 7 classic forms to teach Grievous to Mastery in each, and Qui-Gon fleshing out Ataru to a full martial art (in my opinion using Shien) I wouldnt be surprised if Dooku used elements of other form to balance out his Makashii, never quite enough to make it a hybrid art, but just a few pieces here and there it of practicity. I can think of examples of Shii-cho, Soresu, Ataru and Shien but Djem-So was likely too heavy handed and he was probably the first person to call Niman insufficiently demanding, though he likely took its idea of covering weaknesses with the strengths of other forms.

So among the seven forms, which one originated from the Sith and the Dark Side? And how did the Jedi come to justify its usage within their arts of combat?
Most likely Juyo was Sith made. Often called the "Aggression form" and " Way of the Vornskr"; it's the official 7th, and final, of the traditional lightsaber forms. Juyo utilizes the term "Offense is the best Defense" as it's philosophy and cranks it up to 11 with a flurry of fast, unpredictable, and aggressive battle passion fueled strikes with little to no effort on defense aside from dodging. Sith by nature are very passionate beings, Jedi on the other hand are generally not. As Juyo uses your passion for battle to fuel your strength, speed, and stamina; Sith are able to essentially be able to endlessly fuel themselves with it until dying from battle, collapsing from exhaustion, or winning the fight. With such passions in mind the Jedi never saw the need in general to learn this form, it wasn't until Mace Windu created Vapaad as an alternate to Juyo that could be used by Jedi with a smaller chance of Dark Side corruption; Vapaad uses the same principles os Juyo with the exception of the fuel for the form. Where Juyo uses your passion, Vapaad uses the passions of your opponent.
Amazing work as always! I’ve always had a rudimentary understanding of all seven forms but this is such a deep, thorough look into them and I’m here for it! Super hyped about form IV Ataru video after Soresu
Speaking of ysalamiri, I’ll never not be amazed by how all Thrawn needed to paralyze the New Republic was some cloning tanks, a few furry lizards, and 22 asteroids And much like mukashi, *it was so artistically done…*
The problem I have with the seven forms of saber combat is that it mixes truths with big exaggerations. It is true that in classical fencing (what form 2 is meant to represent) precision, economy of movement, and emphasis on footwork are key concepts. However, two of the others that make it work are intimidation and deception. Most later fencing focused on stabbing and kept the point at the opposition preferably at his face. This creates a massive disincentive for the opposition to charge in. In fact, a great deal of rapier techniques are about making the opposition impale themselves. Trying to bash a blade pointed at you out of the way is very difficult as the swordsman can use techniques such as disengages and circle parries to easily keep the point where he wants it. Thus, form 5's power strikes would not be a disadvantage. Again, I like the idea of different fighting styles, but not when it goes against fencing principles.
Its a wonderful video, I like its focus and stoic approach to combat, there were many practitioners of Makashi that were way cooler than old Dooku, I wonder how lord Farfala would look in combat, they should've made New Sith wars cartoon like the clone wars one.
I’ve been meaning to say this, but I think Makashi should be paired with a more offensive or defensive form, especially in later years since duelists use more aggressive forms like Juyo or my favorite, Shien/Djem-So
As i wrote on Jensarai's makashi video. Learning Makashi to a Masters degree Soresu to a specialists degree And Letting Shien influences come into your own style would make an impressive defense with a lot of counters im duels. Taking the enemy head on waiting them out with soresu then strike and counter with Soresu and Shien
I am surprised vader did not use form 2 for it's efficiency and dueling abilities. I think it would have suited his armour better with his cybernetic limbs making his movements clunky. My assumption is that he used too much emotion, but this is contradicted with the likes of ventress who also was a form 2 Practitioner.
Vader used Form V as a base and applied aspects from all the other Forms on top of it. You can see Form I on the first Death Star and imo the beginning of the last third of Cloud city, Forms II, III and IV in the begining of the Cloud City Fight, and Form VI in the Second part where hes throwing Junk at Luke. I think Form V and VII were predominate on the second Death Star.
I would have loved to see somebody specializing in Form 2 go up against the Trákata user, once they learned to take some distance to keep from getting blink striked
Makashi might lack strength with lightsaber attacks, however, using one's other hand to perform force pushes, force attacks, or hurl objects at the enemy in far more invaluable that merely playing with glowing sticks. You can use force pushes with your other hand to counter powerful attacks and create distractions.
Oddly, i think i use a modified form 2 technique myself, i use the precision and fight style of form 2, but add the strength and aggression of form 7 to each swing, that way if i cant maneuver my opponents weapon away, i simply out of brute force and agro fight style, will overwhelm and force their blade out of their hand, thats my fight style personally i guess lol, a super aggressive and broadly swung form 2, oddly kinda the opposite of what for 2 is supposed to be 🤣
Makashi is my favorite form, though I practice all of them. If I had it my way, I'd have a purified, white lightsaber with Count Dooku's Hilt. Since, at least some lore says, a white lightsaber is made when a dark side saber's crystal is purified. To have been the one to "purify" Count Dooku's lightsaber and fight with it.. I think I'd cry. 🤣
I don't understand why they weren't training hard-core in battle. I would of been training every day and reading the book they had. Just to be top jedi.

Want to hear something funny? I am a mix of form 1 and form 2. I am a fencer, but I do saber fencing, which uses broad, wide movement, but is extremely fast and precise. Being both efficient and simple. Footwork is even more important in saber than the other two fencing types.
yes i am enjoying this series my fav light saber style is aggressive form Form VII, also known as Juyo, the Way of the Vornskr, or the Ferocity Form,
I appreciate your focus on Juyo rather than jumping over it to Vapaad like so many do.
Forms:
1. Neutral
2. Water
3. Earth
4. Air
5. FIRE.
6. LIGHT
7. DARKNESS
0. Heart
8. Heart!
Then why was Exar Kun the most powerful Form VI user... ever?
@@InfinityOrNone because he abandoned the Form VI principle of Moderation.
@@Cyclonus5 I... I can't quite parse what you're saying. Are you saying that he became the most powerful Form VI user because he became dedicated to the form instead of following the intent behind the form of making it a master-of-none so that a Jedi could focus more on diplomacy? Or are you meaning that in some other way?
You sound like Sheldon staying up for a week trying to figure out the string theory lol
Combine it with the defense of form 3 to fight blasters and a back up when your offense fails and you have a really strong form
my fav lightsaber form! much like count dooku it dsnt get enough love. nice to see it giving the respect it deserves, both as a fighting form and its philosophical foundations
The way of Dooku
I just started playing the KOTOR games the other day. I played as a kid but never understood what was going on, it’s awesome that channels like yours go deep into Star Wars lore.
a technique that helps one resist the Force attacks of an enemy, and is also excellent for lightsaber combat.
"The foundation of Makashi was footwork"
Me: *imagines Count Dooku dancing a Waltz with his opponents*
Loving these videos about the LS forms.
Great work.
Thank you
Please please please do trakata and jar kai too! i need to know more about them!
@@Cyclonus5 it's a cool idea to make hybrid forms all my friends like to make up their own lol I'd personally like to use a curved hilt and curved saber combo and use a backup cortosis crossgaurd greatsword dookus saber was amazing but I always wished he'd have a curved blade to match the hilt but it is what it is lol
@@freekill1018 I'm personally studying to dual wield a Curve hilt Main for Makashii and Juyo and an off hand Guard Shoto/Saber Tonfa for Soresu deflections and Shien counters.
Good idea. I like the commentary. I'm more of a form 3 guy, but form 2 sounds like fun.
Christopher Lee: Fencer and fought in WW2 knowning what a man who is stabbed in the lungs sounds like
Can't wait till you guys get to form III and IV, they're my favorite.
It sucks against blaster fire and power attacks. Count Dooku was the poster boy for this form.
I've been looking forward to this!
The way of the salami
love these lightsaber form videos keep it up.
In due time, you should do a video of Form Zero…
After covering the remaining forms, I would like you to make a video exploring which form is the overall best?
Count Dooku (Darth Tyrannus) was not a master of form 2, he was the master of form 2, Makashi.
Still waiting for the guide to the Senate.
Speaking of ysalamiri, I’ll never not be amazed by how all Thrawn needed to paralyze the New Republic was some cloning tanks, a few furry lizards, and 22 asteroids
And much like mukashi, *it was so artistically done…*
Ysalamiri were from Myrkyr not Wayland.
My favorite form! Looking forward to your future videos. :)
I love this series and I'm so excited for you to continue it
I’m glad you are enjoying it
Form II is my favourite form followed by Form III.
I ENJOY THIS SERIES SO MUCH!
Love the series. have watched a lot of vids like this, but instead all in 1 video. But you, as always , manage to kick it up a few notches. Great vid!
Anything to to with lightsabers combat and the force I'm in also yeah I'm loving this series.
I’ve been meaning to say this, but I think Makashi should be paired with a more offensive or defensive form, especially in later years since duelists use more aggressive forms like Juyo or my favorite, Shien/Djem-So
As i wrote on Jensarai's makashi video.
Learning Makashi to a Masters degree
Soresu to a specialists degree
And Letting Shien influences come into your own style would make an impressive defense with a lot of counters im duels.
Taking the enemy head on waiting them out with soresu then strike and counter with Soresu and Shien
So civilized.
I’m having a good time
My favorite lightsaber style and Count Dooku is a great Duelist
@@Cyclonus5 appreciate the insight broski
I would have loved to see somebody specializing in Form 2 go up against the Trákata user, once they learned to take some distance to keep from getting blink striked
I would def learn Makashi, it is stylish and practical, i could probably learn soresu as well to get rid of the blaster bolt weakness
I would use a hybrid form of makashi and shien form 5. One for saber fighting and the other for blasting deflection/mutiple enemies.
You should do a video of grand inquisitor vs count dooku lmao
Cant wait for form 6 and the different ways it was practiced.
Scholarly; cin dralig
Dual master; exar kun
Tactical; Revan.
Uh Geetsly... Ysalamiri are from Myrkr not Wayland. The same planet that the Vornskr come from.
Gonna like now and watch later :)
Makashi might lack strength with lightsaber attacks, however, using one's other hand to perform force pushes, force attacks, or hurl objects at the enemy in far more invaluable that merely playing with glowing sticks.
You can use force pushes with your other hand to counter powerful attacks and create distractions.
I love this series! I can't wait for next week (Even if you do fall for the Jedi propaganda about balance 😉)
Assajj Ventress in my opinion
was Makashi and Juyo.
Her Ferocity was second to none when it came to female Dark Jedi.
Oddly, i think i use a modified form 2 technique myself, i use the precision and fight style of form 2, but add the strength and aggression of form 7 to each swing, that way if i cant maneuver my opponents weapon away, i simply out of brute force and agro fight style, will overwhelm and force their blade out of their hand, thats my fight style personally i guess lol, a super aggressive and broadly swung form 2, oddly kinda the opposite of what for 2 is supposed to be 🤣
Makashi is the form I would choose . I love the way of it .
I'm VERY interested in more of these videos
The anti-style of showoffs. Only use it when things are just too casual for your liking.
Video #2
Favorite id like to us now: makashi, form 2
My favorite and personal form
So it’s just Olympic style Sabre, touch sparing and all, lol
Awesome video keep em coming!
Didn’t Darth Bane use form two?
Or was it just a curved lightsaber?
Hm, how very interesting.
I don't understand why they weren't training hard-core in battle. I would of been training every day and reading the book they had. Just to be top jedi.
Is there a video game where you can pick between the 7 forms and your lightsaber color?
You say there's music on this channel but I have never heard it lol I mean I do but not really.
Watching dooku in live action I don't get much of a fencing feel
Wayland? But wasn't the Ysalamiri native to Myrkr?
I think Form II takes itself too seriously. But is still badass
Sweet 👍👍
Why would you ever try to disarm your opponent if you have a lightsaber.
Go for the wrist and lop off the hand?
