    *Someone to Love You*
    Stephanie often has these poignant scenes with Ridge where she ruminates on love and life and the loneliness of middle age. From her post-divorce funk (episode 1099) to her need to reconcile with Eric (episode 1271) to her surprise at falling for Jack (episode 1342) - she isn’t afraid to bare her soul and be emotionally vulnerable with her firstborn. But there is a third character implicated in all those scenes: Eric, and the divorce that made her feel unloved and lonely.
    And make no mistake, Eric is here in this Big Bear scene too. When Stephanie tells Ridge, “You are one of those lucky people in life because you’ll always have someone to love you,” she’s also talking about her own unluckiness in love. You can sense Stephanie’s wonder and admiration for Ridge - her beautiful creation who is so different from his Creator. We joke about how Ridge always needs to go off somewhere to think but there’s another way to read that. Ridge is not often left “alone with his thoughts” because Ridge is very seldom _alone._ He is always being pursued, desired, wanted - as a romantic object, as his parents’ favorite, as a father figure.
    But that is not the case for Stephanie. She rarely has romantic partners and her children rebuff her interest in their lives. She has plenty of time alone to think which is why she’s the most thoughtful character on the show. But even smart lonely girls want to be loved. The mind can’t satisfy what the heart wants. As she counsels Ridge through yet another love triangle, does she envy him his luck? When she looks at him, instead of seeing herself (the Creator reflected in her creation) she likely sees Eric staring back at her. Eric who went easily from Stephanie to Brooke to Sheila just as Ridge went from Caroline to Taylor to Brooke. Indeed that’s why she has a stake in Ridge’s decision: if Ridge chooses Taylor (Stephanie’s avatar) over Brooke, it’s like rewriting Eric’s decision and it heals the trauma of his rejection of her. Much has been said about Stephanie’s Oedipal o b se s s ion with Ridge and this is the crux of that psychology. She wistfully looks at Eric and Ridge and sees two men who are luckier than her, two men who will always have someone to love them. And one of those “someone’s” is Stephanie.

    • @mara4450
      @mara4450 6 місяців тому +5

      I definitely can see Stephanie's vulnerability and Eric always being there too in these scenes. When Brooke wonders how she is supposed to prepare for the end of the life that means everything to her, Stephanie replies that she knows exactly the pain Brooke is feeling. Stephanie definitely is in a different position than Eric or Ridge have ever been (both easily moving on). My only issue with that is that because of Stephanie's different way of loving someone, Stephanie's romantic loneliness is of her own choice. She several times had men showing a romantic interest (Clark, Adam, Bill, Jack, -later James and Massimo- ) but Stephanie seems to prefer solitude, if it isn't Eric.

      Beautifully written! I love this kind of in depth character analysis, and I love when the writing _allows_ for this kind of analysis! Stephanie does seem to be the character on the show who has the most developed inner life, and when we get to hear her elaborate on her thoughts, it often feels like we are hearing the writers (orginally Bill Bell) reflect on life through her.

      Thanks guys! 🙂❤Two lines I just want to highlight from the examples above. In episode 1099 when she's depressed over the divorce, Stephanie concludes, *_"Life is just a playground for people who are young and beautiful and nothing more."_* It's a comment on aging and feeling unloved and unlovely made to her beautiful son for whom life really is a playground. Then in episode 1342, sitting by the pool she ruminates on the loneliness of middle age and describes it as *_"For so long I felt like I was just putting in time."_* Just beautiful lines and like Annie said, they feel as if the writer is speaking through her and reflecting on life.

    There is a clear shift in Brooke's approach here - she is genuinely giving Ridge space to make a decision on his own, in fact, she's encouraging it, which is something a Good Girl would do.
    And Stephanie actually _acknowledges_ this and has a friendly conversation with Brooke. Then she goes to see Ridge at the cabin, giving him genuinely good advice and not obviously pushing her own agenda (although we know she does have a preference).
    All characters involved are behaving refreshingly sensibly in this episode.

    • @NewYorkNick0607
      @NewYorkNick0607 6 місяців тому +14

      I think there are two ways to read this Brooke/Stephanie scene. It seems innocent on the surface -- Brooke giving Ridge space to make a decision and Stephanie expressing concern for Brooke. But Brooke is also essentially ensuring that Ridge doesn't spend any time with Taylor before making his decision. It's possible to view her move as more selfish and calculating than it appears (especially when she refuses to tell Taylor where Ridge is in the next episode). And Stephanie dropping by to see Brooke and then Ridge is a classic Stephanie move to try gain information and subtly manipulate the outcome of a love triangle. And notice how Stephanie doesn't tell Brooke where she's going next.

    • @annieo6527
      @annieo6527 6 місяців тому +3

      @@NewYorkNick0607 I just saw your post and replied to it, and yes, you make a compelling argument that really makes me look at that interaction in a different light! I agree that this scene can definitely be read as both Brooke and Stephanie having ulterior motives (in fact, it's a more "in character" interpretation than the one that first came to my mind). And it's yet another example of Brooke resisting the Good Girl archetype on a closer reading - still, I would say that we _have_ entered the first (the "Taylor-esque") part of Brooke's "Good Girl phase" (which will always be somewhat glitchy) because the parallels to Taylor encouraging Ridge to make a choice are so clear.
      By the way, in my 1996 viewing I just came across the first indication of Brooke being about to _exit_ her Good Girl phase (her kissing Grant in episode 2350).

      @@NewYorkNick0607 you know, I'm getting more and more invested in the whole "Brooke's character mimicry" reading. It's not actually _good_ characterization as much as it's _intriguing_ because it reveals an intention on Brad 🔔's part to reform Brooke's character into something he perceives as more of a "heroine", and he does this without really taking Brooke's actual _character_ (or history) into account. So whatever Brooke does, there is a "yes, but..." attached.
      And it presents some interesting questions, like _why exactly_ is Taylor better than Brooke at _being Taylor?_

    Is Brooke sending Ridge away really _that_ unselfish? He only spent time with her after the hearing and in the next episode Brooke will refuse to tell Taylor where he is. Sending him away under those conditions is tantamount to ensuring that he doesn't spend any time with Taylor before making his decision. Brooke has a knack for making selfish moves and calling them sacrifices.

    • @annieo6527
      @annieo6527 6 місяців тому +11

      Ooh, that _is_ a good point, I didn't consider than angle! It again shows the "glitchiness" we talked about earlier, with Brooke acting out a "Taylor move" but without fully becoming one with it (it really reinforces the "mimicry" metaphor we discussed earlier, in an almost literal way compared to how it works in the animal kingdom).
      And Taylor not finding out where Ridge is, is also a "Good Girl disadvantage" - but then that is contradicted by Taylor's "less good proxy" Stephanie _already being with Ridge_ in Taylor's place to protect her interests, potentially giving Taylor a possible _advantage_ that she doesn't know she has.

It starts around the 17 minute mark as she discusses Ridge marrying Caroline, then Taylor and the music rises when she gets to Brooke. I love that cue. It's the "Stephanie says something poignant to Ridge" cue. 😄 I remember they also played it in a future episode (you would've seen this already from your Video Land viewing) after the paternity reveal when Stephanie is telling Ridge how much Taylor has suffered and that he has to let her go and let her move on with her life.
