TRIVIA TIME: The two actors who play Young Walter and Young Sam are Mickey Kuhn and Darryl Hickman respectively. They are both still with us today. RIP to our beloved Kirk Douglas. This was Kirk Douglas debut film at the recommendation of the fantastic Lauren Bacall. This is Van Heflin's first film after surviving a three year hitch with the U.S. Army Air Corps' Ninth Air Force as a combat cameraman in Europe during WWII. ADDENDUM: Darryl Hickman's brother, Dwayne Hickman, most known for his girl-crazy and cool portrayal of Dobie Gillis is also still with us!!! If you haven't seen a Dobie Gillis show, its' well worth watching. Especially for Dobie's very special bongo playing soul-patch sporting best friend, Maynard G. @@sandrapatterson2916 Thank you, Sandy! I love trying to find good trivia to add to films; we seem to need more of this these days. You have a great life! Oh, I added and addendum to my note above. :-)
Well here's something I didn't see in the credits of the filmor in your post: Isn't the sailor who sleeps through Van Heflin's car crash, Blake Edwards? And isn't the young girl in the opening scenes Janis Wilson? I think that was her name - she played the troubled daughter of Paul Henreid in "Now Voyager"(1942)
Barbara Stanwyck is one of my all-time favorites. My aunt used to watch the oldies relentlessly. She got me hooked on these because they are REAL drama and drama at its finest! Thanks for sharing this goodie! I've seen this a gazillion times and each time I watch it I see something I've missed previously.
That's what a movie should be like. Good acting, excellent stars, good plot. Loved it . That young girl who played the young Martha was the same young lady who played with Bette Davies in Now Voyager!!!!
Janis Wilson was a successful American child actress of the 1940s. Her mom got her dentist to put bands on her teeth in order for her to win her first movie role, as Tina Durrance, the child unloved by her mother in 'Now Voyager'. Bette Davis became so fond of Janis she persuaded Warner Bros to cast her as her daughter in her next movie 'Watch on the Rhine'. Janis retired from acting after starring in six movies, aged 18. She met her future husband on the Warner Bros lot aged 12 while making 'Now Voyager'. They married when she was 25 and had a son together. In 1996 Janis announced she was working on a book about her years as a child actress, and her special relationship with Bette Davis. Sadly it did not materialise. She died of a stroke aged 73, in 2003.
And classic Hollywood could take a few pointers from classic Japan (truly photographic cinematography, Hollywood focuses so much on their faces and cliches)
The good dramas tend to be streaming television series now, though even they have a tendency to go over the top. Movies are mostly geared toward a pretty juvenile audience which has zero attention span and eats up effects. No doubt there are independent productions which are still excellent, they just don't get distributed much.
Well, to be fair, Hollywood has always been a cesspit in one way or other. However, it used to be a cesspit that could produce great art. Now, it mostly produces crap, and has the audacity to scantimoniously wag its finger at the audience, despite it being one of the most venal places on Earth. Sorry, I just felt that I need to get that off my chest.
Wow, what a great film. Four fantastic actors. And Kirk Douglas was so handsome - hard to believe he was meant to be a wimp - shows what a great actor he was.
One of the best movies of all time, filled with suspense, betrayal, deceitfulness, Barbara Stanwyck, Kirk Douglass, Van Heflin, they could act those days, I give this movie the max, 5 stars.
The first time I started to watch this movie, years ago, I lost interest after the first few minutes. I'm glad I gave it another chance now because I stuck with it and loved it. The opening scenes don't seem like a film noir, which is why I turned it off the first time. But after those establishing flashback scenes the movie becomes a terrific movie with all the noir elements. The troubled protagonist and the femme fatale are played to perfection by Heflin and Stanwyck, and Douglas and Scott are also perfect in their roles. The atmosphere, pacing, cinematography and music score are all wonderful. Thanks for posting it.
@@redlightspellsdanger7177 I think so. :o) It is definitely worth watching. And Kirk Douglas is fascinating playing a weaker type of man than he usually did. It's very involving and a very convoluted plot. But you posted your comment 2 hours ago. So maybe you're watched it all by now.
Are they a copy of Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart? I think they are, the studios copy what works and what sells. I bet this is a copy of the Bacall/Bogart dynamic.
Good story and believable characters, top level acting from Barbara Stanwyck, Van Heflin, Kirk Douglas and beautiful Lizabeth Scott. Kirk Douglas lived to be over 100, a remarkably long life. Lizabeth Scott had an amazing voice. She died aged 92 in 2015. Barbara Stanwyck was 82 when she passed but sadly Heflin was only 62 when he died. I think the aunt was played by the same lady who played Mrs Danvers from Hitchcock's "Rebecca" in 1940. Hadn't seen this one before, but it was well worth watching. Thanks for the upload.

What a great script! Good story. Deep characters. Great portrait of a situation kept a secret that will eat you up along the years and destroy you and everything around you. What a pitty.
I am wondering if the current movies got good story content. It feels so real that the Old films stories can happen in real life of today. Simply brilliant !!
A probing movie about the human condition. I am 66. No, I will not say: "they don't make movies like this any more," "the good old days," "when people were good," "actors don't act like this anymore." Just because I am old, I am not blind to the brilliant artists of the 60s-today. I have seen incredible art coming out of Cuba, Italy, France, China, Algeria, Israel... That said, Old Hollywood did make some great movies, which seen from my today, are classics. And this is one of them, oh man, is this a fine work...
Thank you PizzaFlix, this is by far one of the best classics i have watched. Great and complicated storyline, talented actors and a deserved happy ending for Sammy...

Terrible title for a great movie! Stanwyck is terrific, calling the shots as usual - she's a favorite of mine. This film received an Oscar nomination in the Best Original Motion Picture Story category, but lost to VACATION FROM MARRIAGE. Thanks so much for posting this!
Ever notice how SEXY (except for Stanwyck) these old movie actresses were, WITHOUT showing ANY skin!! Unlike the "actresses" today, who wear barely more than a couple bandaids and a cork! They HAVE to show as much skin as possible or nobody would watch the movie!! Old actresses didn't rely on a sound board that could literally turn a pig squeal sound like great opera! And they could actually DANCE, fully clothed, without bumps and grinds being the main focus of their "dancing", as close to naked as possible!! When someone was shot, even when they moved the body, there was NO BLOOD!! They relied on a PLOT, NOT blood guts and veins!! I'll take the old movies over the new crap every time!! Thanks VERY MUCH for keeping these old gems alive!!!
amen! (though there are some oldies that are pretty risque', but nothing like today.)' also, isn't it amazing how vulgar language and crude behavior aren't needed to tell a truly good tale?

Krebs who is played hilariously by Bob Denver, RIP to Mr. Denver.
@ToniHuntetOne Absolutely great movie trivia. I love it! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
@@sandrapatterson2916 Thank you, Sandy! I love trying to find good trivia to add to films; we seem to need more of this these days. You have a great life! Oh, I added and addendum to my note above. :-)

You are fantastic with movie trivia. I grew up watching Dobie Gillis (back in the day lol).
I enjoyed reading the addendum! 👍🏼
@@Themanwhocameback2
.....very interesting.
She's My Favorite Actress, Aso! ❤
What a winner with 4 great ones in a good story. Thank You for sharing with us all.
That's what a movie should be like. Good acting, excellent stars, good plot. Loved it . That young girl who played the young Martha was the same young lady who played with Bette Davies in Now Voyager!!!!
I thought she looked familiar.
Ah I thought I recognized her - she’s fab. Now Voyager is my mum’s absolute favorite film!!!
Modern day Hollywood could take a few pointers from Classic Hollywood. Drama at its finest.
Hollywood sold it´s soul to corporations that were only interested in profits and not the love of the art. Sony comes to mind.
I could never get tired of this movie and Mildred Pierce. Good films.
my mother, a common waitress.
Don't leave out Lizabeth Scott please.
Kind of the way life can happen,
its good. Double Indemnity best of all time though.
Rest in peace Kirk Douglas. You were a great actor and a true gentleman. You'll be sorely missed.
Gentleman 😄
@@sharksport01 yeah he was shameless horndog - but could act.
Never have I seen a film with as many twists and turns as this one. I have nothing much else to say. I'm left speechless.
J. Criquette left speechless in a good way!? I’m just reading the opening credits... fan of Kirk Douglas
Spells are the danger and you are under 1 watching this television = telling lies to your vision Stanwyck was aman
@@Jillups. You poor naive child. Let me guess, 14 years old? 15? Stunted growth?

And that dress 👗 on Elizabeth Scott where she’s sitting on the front steps of the house…..absolutely superb tailoring…..
Top notch vintage black and white drama. Thank you so very much, loved it.
The chemistry between Scott and Heflin, and their great performances, are the best part of this movie. They should've been paired together again.
Fitness First They made two more movies together. B.F.’s daughter in 1948 and East Side. West Side. In 1948.
Van Heflin is so good!
Yes. Judith Anderson played both Mrs Ivers and Mrs Danvers.
A great movie all actors played roles to perfection Barbara could play any roles to perfection wish there were more like these today
A young Kirk Douglas and the great Van Heflin and the lovely Lizabeth Scott! what a wonderful story and great suspense.
Phenomenal cast and direction. True acting. Thank you for sharing with us.
Merry Christmas.
One of the best Film Noir films I believe was ever made. I really enjoyed this film. It had a great Cast, Story, Director and Music Score by the one and only Miklos Rozsa. Thank for the excellent upload. Out.
TIOMKIN1, great name!
My money is on "Asphalt Jungle." Miklos Rozsa did music on both films. 💜
@lana lake, you Must see "Asphalt Jungle." To me, it's the gold standard for noir. John Huston directs New York actors: Sterling Hayden, Sam Jaffe, James Whitmore, Louis Calhern, Jean Hagen, and Marilyn Monroe! Brilliant.
@@TheSaltydog07Thank you for your compliment on my user name. I have been a fan of Tiomkin since 1957 and had the pleasure of meeting him in 1969. Wow what a story line and truly outstanding acting!
I am surprised that this flick has not gotten more comments! Lots of star power, suspense, and a little action team up for great viewing! Thanks, Pizza Flix, for another terrific little film noir.
Give it some time. Thanks for watching! May the Sauce be with you.
This was one of Kirk Douglass' first film roles.
" the road curved but I didn't" They sure had lines back then.
Double Indemnity did too. Same year 1944.

I was quite happy to celebrate the lifetime of Kirk Douglas, by being able to watch the very first movie, that he ever had a role in. Thanks for that, Pizzafix.
This is such a good movie. It cooks along when it wants to and takes its time when it’s necessary. Well done on every level.
Stanwyck was a unique beauty and a great actress. No, they don't make them like her anymore.
Thank you, this is one of my favourite films. Wonderful era for great films and actors and actresses.
Great movie with a fabulous cast and story line. I've had it for years on VHS and haven't thought about it in a long while. Thank you for posting it.
Barbara Stanwyck once again excels in another one of her signature roles. An Earth Goddess with a voice like scotch on the rocks.
From the first time I saw this movie on the Late Late Show in NYC back in the 70's, I like every inch of this movie. Simple and engaging.
Amazing dialogue. What an era of film. Wow.
I’ve seen this picture 7 or 8 times and still one of the best. The acting is top notch all the way.
Very well said. Thanks for watching PizzaFLIX. May the Sauce be with you.
Thank you PizzaFlix, this is by far one of the best classics i have watched. Great and complicated storyline, talented actors and a deserved happy ending for Sammy...
Kirk Douglas' performance was outstanding here - in a role that calls for a weak and insecure character.
Yes he's loathsome and pathetic.
Yes, quite a risk for Douglas in his first role, pulled it off brilliantly...loved the office flirtation with Heflin and Ann Doran!
Liz Scott is so beautiful here, stunning. The scene w Van H in the opening is poetry.
I totally agree
@Nee Nee O how are we wrong Nee Nee? Neet name by the way
I thought her gorgeous. First I've seen of her too.
It hardly gets better than this movie. Great acting.
This is the 2nd time I have seen this, but it has been a long time since I saw it last and it kept me on the edge of my seat worrying over Sam! Barbara Stanwyck never fails to draw you in. They don't make actors and actress like that anymore!

Terrible title for a great movie! Stanwyck is terrific, calling the shots as usual - she's a favorite of mine. This film received an Oscar nomination in the Best Original Motion Picture Story category, but lost to VACATION FROM MARRIAGE. Thanks so much for posting this!
I agree about the title-- doesn't fit.
What a great film. Seen it a few times but it never gets old
Ever notice how SEXY (except for Stanwyck) these old movie actresses were, WITHOUT showing ANY skin!!
Thanks VERY MUCH for keeping these old gems alive!!!
amen! (though there are some oldies that are pretty risque', but nothing like today.)'
also, isn't it amazing how vulgar language and crude behavior aren't needed to tell a truly good tale?
