Same, I feel these are things that all sound so obvious when you think about it.. But the simplest conclusions are the most refined, this video is a real slap to the face.
This is easily one of your most helpful lectures! I think it shows exactly why design is not just about creating beautiful paintings, but coming up with an interesting problem and solving it. Also, this format makes it much easier to understand the whole process and practise it with your own concept, instead of just following along.
this channel is a school itself. I behave it as an art school and take notes. I've filled 2 100 page notebook of the critic's tips and other things. thank you so much. you and Scott Robertson did so much for us students who don't have access to art schools.
This must have been the most important video from me regarding studying concept art. For years now I've been struggling to get anything on paper while when I was younger it almost came naturally. I loved to imagine all kinds of worlds, what the people and architecture would look like and how they managed to live in such an environment. But over the years I've totally skipped that part and just tried to create "nice artwork" which, like I said, never worked out for me. Also focusing so much on the fundamentals of painting made me so anxious to put even just a simple line or shape on paper, worrying that my point of interest wasn't in the right spot. But looking at you just drawing and having a blast with it makes me so excited! I can't wait to see you in Paris, Mr. Zhu. Unfortunately I have almost no work to show because of the reasons stated above and because of all the brain noise from the past couple of years (relationships, depression, unsure of the career I wanted to follow, etc.). But even though my portfolio is very thin at the moment and so I won't be able to get a lot of feedback from you guys, I'm sure I'll be going home again completely fulfilled, since you guys are so very inspiring. You make me feel like this is a career worth putting the hard effort in for. Thank you!
Thank you very much! this is very helpful. Most tutorials I've watched already had their ideas thought up before hand. Seeing how you brainstorm things, how you use reference, and your work flow is very enlightening . Thank you!!!
I absolutely loved this episode. The way you developed an overhead shot and then placed the cameras was one of the best things I have learned in a long time. Thank you for taking your time to educate. I am placing this method in my workflow immediately.
Thanks for clarifying the hobby pieces, I was starting to hate spiky mountains and castles everywhere haha. Really great information and stuff, thanks for all the time you put into these videos. The're really helpful and helped improve waaaaay too much!
Know that your videos help me a crazy lot, even though I am not an concept designer but a game designer. Seeing your creative process and thinking + you stressing out the difference between designing and drawing made me realize the difference between designing a game and developing one. I kinda had an "intuitive" understanding of it, but now I can put words on it. And as you say here, finding resources that truly show what happens behind the scenes is super rare and valuable. Thx again
Thank you Feng for taking the extra time to produce this content. I know that doing this requires a sacrifice of your own personal time or time with your family and I know everyone who learns from this channel appreciates it greatly!
The funniest part of this is when Feng is like "It's like when you go vacationing in the Maldives..." or "It's like when you are buying a house..." and art students can't relate to these experiences at all.
Absolutely fantastic video. There is too few videos about the design thought process. This is exactly the content I need. No need to make these any shorter. Thank you from Finland.
Invaluable content, don't worry about outside noises /chair creeking because they weren't distracting. The denseness of the information and showing a real perspective of what is involved in design work are great. Speaking of perspective, I realised I have to work on it, you just threw it down so fast naturally enough
You're a good teacher to evaluate yourself like that. Yeah, I like the long form better. It's much more informative and useful. Thank you for providing these for free.
This format is great!!! I actually love just listening to this while I work, I was really sad once I ran out of older episodes haha. Thanks for doing all this for us, I think we all appreciate it a lot!
Hey Feng, thank you for showing your process. That helps a lot. I really like how loosy you sketch in this early stage. Especially interesting because we know how well you can actually draw and paint.
while doing the floor plant, and saying: Maybe someone could think this is boring. Me being an architect & Urbanistic designer went straight to my heart :C hahahahahaha
I will not get tired of saying this, your down to earth, get real, work to get results attitude put me on a path that has since led me into the game industry, I will forever hold a special place in my mind for these videos and you Feng. I am ready to learn some more now :D
I love these videos man. I do not care about the length even if I don't have the time in a day I will watch them as a TV show, for ex 20 min and so on, so don't worry about the length and such. Your content is so great.
This was an outstanding video. So cool to see process like this, where it's not just a time lapse or a finished product. It's a fun concept for the design too. Thank you so much!
This video help me more than even i knew i needed best art channel ive found for my need so far. Thank you for the time you put into your videos to help us learn love the raw material.
I haven't watched a Design Cinema video in a long time and man what an amazing topic to start back up on. Thank you so much for sharing so much of your process!
It is encouraging to watch someone who is able to draw anything start with squiggles. By the way, your village works in the real world. In the Sierras, they build houses on stilts. During the summer, you climb up spiral staircases. During the winter, you use a door that opens onto the snow that piles up (and these doors look comical during the summer, because if you walked out one you would fall two stories). The Japanese may not do this as much because they get more earthquakes than we do. Americans also want to look out huge windows all the time, so we insist on being above the snow. In contrast, the Japanese make special little windows intentionally to look at light filtering through the snow burying the house. Building in canyons makes perfect sense if all the flat land has been taken by other people. Your village is basically San Diego in Niigata Prefecture.
This is the stuff I really want to talk about. Thanks so much this is the best episode I've seen, though there are many I have yet to see! TY TY for sharing all this information, nothing boring here!!!
Thanks for this Feng, I Follow this chanel since a long time, even now that I know more of how industrie works , you still gives us inspiration and motivation with more info.
You just get me everytime you make a punch in the face video! I want to do concept art, I want to find solutions, not just do cool drawings, thanks Feng! Coming to your school in less than 2 years if everything goes as planned :D
Every time I watch something like this it reminds me of how badly I want to do design :/ I would start design work now but I have a few weeks to put together a final animation piece and start looking for a job and my evenings really aren't enough time to get anything done, between 9 and 12 and I'm always dead at this point, plus I can't afford to get sick from overworking... Screw it! I'm going to design a Dwarven city built into an active volcano, with roman era inspiration and its going to be awesome!
Every time you do the Blub sound while painting I smile :D. Going to apply for FZD after comleting my bachelor program because I wanted to do that from the very start of Uni
Awesome another video!! I'd love to see a future vid about fundamentals / how to pursue them if there aren't any already. I'm trying to focus on those and any more resources would be awesome. Either way thanks for all the amazing videos. Inspired me a lot and helped me on my journey.
Feng said a while back that he won't do fundamentals becuase it's too much material to cover. There are a lot of good resources on fundamentals: -All of the Andrew Loomis books. Starting with Successful drawing. -Scott Robertson's How to Draw and How to Render. Scott actually taught Feng at Design Center College. -All the Framed books by Marcos Mateu Mestre -Color and Light and Imaginative Realism by James Gurney. Best books on painting and his channel is great. -The Five C's of Cinematography. -Peter Han has some good fundamental lectures. -Proko's channel for anatomy. -Croquis Cafe channel if you don't have access to live models. -FZD obviously. Look up his Traditional Mediums video. Also the recent videos titles Just Draw and 10 Begninner tips are fantastic.
The best episode so far! Thank you very much. You videos motivate me to draw and paint a lot more and i think i speak for everyone here. I have a question. I bought How to draw and how to render. They are great to learn funamentals. So my question is: Are they good Design books out there?
This is exactly the design thinking I love. Thanks Feng! Do you ever review sketches like this the next day? Director/Leads? This has been my experience.
its too snowy and cold above the canyon and because its warm at the bottom ,very dangerous creatures live there, hence they live like this.this is in the winters, in the summer its slightly bearable so the villagers go for exploring hunting and foraging in the ,somewhat like attack on titans.
Really enjoyed the episode Feng i would highly request if you could come up with the time to make the next episodes like this and continue with the BASICS .thanks !
These long raw videos are really good and enjoyable! Really nice format for Design Cinema
It's ok Feng, any content from you is great, regardless of length. Thank you for doing all this for us.
This yea
even if this guy would make 5 hours video, think everyone here gona watch it full..
Honestly the best video I've seen from anyone... Really opened up my eyes to the real design process.
Same, I feel these are things that all sound so obvious when you think about it.. But the simplest conclusions are the most refined, this video is a real slap to the face.
Feng's greatest fear: The Crash
Feng's greatest nemesis: The Drill
will he overcome his adversaries? Only time might tell
This is easily one of your most helpful lectures! I think it shows exactly why design is not just about creating beautiful paintings, but coming up with an interesting problem and solving it.

gold , pure gold . my process will be way more refine with this video

Oh wow almost two hours... can't wait to watch it! Thanks for making these videos!
For me, this format is perfect. I can still easily work, while listening to/watching your videos.
This must have been the most important video from me regarding studying concept art.

I really enjoy this format, I must say. It really shows your process very well.
As an architect student, I enjoy looking at other professions creative way of visualizing things it's great
How would you visualize this same environment?
Really love seeing this kind of process. The thought process and design stuff is rarely seen and I really wish I could see more
Thank you very much! this is very helpful.
Most tutorials I've watched already had their ideas thought up before hand.
Seeing how you brainstorm things, how you use reference, and your work flow is very enlightening .

Hell yeah. I always prefer real-time. So glad you decide to keep it raw and pact full of helpful info
Feng is in the air again. Oh, yeah!😀😀😀
Thank you again Feng for providing these lessons. Your lessons along with a few from others have made all the difference for me.
thanks for the episode!
for me seeing how you go through the thinking process was really awesome. this is the part i like the most.
Know that your videos help me a crazy lot, even though I am not an concept designer but a game designer. I love these long form videos! And the raw, more class lecture formats with demos are awesome! Keep up the work you are doing!
One of the best videos I've ever seen
i love the super long episodes. Thank you for giving so much time and effort. Hearing you talk motivates me to draw. :))))
One of the best episodes, Feng! Love to see the process. Can't wait to see the other ones.
Thanks for the video! I got super excited that you came out with another one relatively quickly! I've always loved the longer format!
This is very helpful! I mean, there's a lot of videos showing you pretty artworks, but to break it down to the core, it's rare. Thank you, sir :D
Well if Fridays couldn't get any better along comes a brand new FZD video! Thanks Feng!
Absolutely loved this episode
These kinds of long videos are my favorite when drawing. Never too long imo.
Thank You Feng Zhu!
Super appreciate you actually designing from the very start for this one Feng!
you are a whole school man. Thank You so much for sharing the knowledge.
Hey Feng, thank you for showing your process. That helps a lot. I really like how loosy you sketch in this early stage. Especially interesting because we know how well you can actually draw and paint.

Hey Feng! Thanks for everything/all the videos you did. Can't wait to meet you in Paris!
Let's go back watching this video now!
Design IS the process by which function manifests itself through form in the purest and most accurate expression to the original Idea.
I really appreciate your videos!
Man this really changed the way I think about concept Art! Thanks feng! I also watched the Paris recording version of this! Very good stuff!
I love these videos man. I do not care about the length even if I don't have the time in a day I will watch them as a TV show, for ex 20 min and so on, so don't worry about the length and such. Your content is so great.

you are tooo goood for us, we don't deserve so much kindness

Really enjoyed this one! Very inspiring! Thanks for doing these!
You rock Feng, much thanks 🙏
Feng says... 'We can still create our tower but put a little design'....
Feng: proceeds to design entire civilisation 😅😅
Amazing content!
I love it when he says "POPORTIONS"
This is exactly the design thinking I love. Thanks Feng! Do you ever review sketches like this the next day? Director/Leads? This has been my experience.
I can't thank you enough !
Very, very good... a better insight into processes... with sound effects! Cheers..!
Thank you so much
THANK YOU FENG
