- Concept art has matured significantly in the past 25 years, especially in the gaming industry. To find a job today, students need to understand how the industry has changed and what roles are available to them. In turn, they have to cater their portfolios to target these roles. mate dont ever apologise for being late on releasing new content. The fact that we have ur content for free is blessing.
word man!
Best online tutor period!
Literally the best art channel on UA-cam.
I know right!!!
no forreal i just came across this channel and was honestly shocked to see how many videos i could watch for free and how long they are. Colleges/Art schools charge for this type of info.
Speak for yourself I want more content
Feng is literally holding our hand and walking us through content that he has shared with us, over and over again. Props to you Feng , for doing this.
This is literally just a lesson. I genuinely think that you are THE MOST generous professional towards students who want to be in the industry. I hope you always have the coolest car and nicest house. You rock Feng.
So true, he's so generous. Has been for so many years. Sporadic maybe but no one minds because the content is always so helpful and on point.
His professionalism is top tier, such a treat to learn from
Feng could talk about his office chair for 2 hours and I'd be entertained.
for real XDD
Or cereal 😂
i could actually pay for a video of him talking about his chair xD
This is legit true
I would love that
In reference to the 90% landscape pictures: Speaking as an animation student in my final year, just doing landscape pictures doesn't say much either. Concept art is also about telling a story, which the throne room/1% have demonstrated, so if all you're doing is generic landscape that doesn't say much about the world, the characters nor the culture or time period then you've failed at what you're supposed to do. The concept art is there to give the designers/3D artists/animators an idea of what kind of world is being created. If all you want to do is draw pretty pictures then become a fine artist and sell your work online; but if you want to be a concept artist then I expect to see some story behind the picture.
Interesting insight, thanks!
Feng, I have been following your channel for 6+ years now, I even came to visit your school in Singapore. Your content is a blessing. The quality of work you put out is astounding. I decided not to pursue art and design for a living, but I truly appreciate what you provide for the community and I always enjoy watching another episode of Design Cinema. Sincerely, thank you. I could wait 1+ year for a single episode and watch it with pleasure.
Feng is Back! How exciting!
I'm a visual designer and I still find this content absolutely brilliant, even for my industry.
No need to apologize for taking a while to release content! The important thing is the stuff you are giving is very valuable and can't be found anywhere else for free. For an artist struggling financially in these times going through your backlog is incredibly appreciated and any new thing you create is just a wonderful bonus. :)
Woah, I just realised that these design basics don't only apply to concept design, but literally to our real living space. When I look around me, my room is definitely not in stage 4. I think I'd be much happier if I took some time to think about and add elements to my room that show some character.
I think you're absolutely correct. I visited a friend who had moved to San Jose for art school and the first thing that struck me was that his apartment was very bland - no pictures anywhere, just a bookcase, bed, and desk. He said that the environment was very depressing so I encouraged him to put up some things on the wall that represented part of who he was. After just adding some posters and artwork it completely changed the environment and it became much easier to live in. Without that personalization, that design, that "story" something is still incomplete, and I think we (especially as artists) can feel it on a fundimental level and it affects us.
I'm in my last year in graphic art school, concept art option, and you don't know HOW HELPFULL it is while we need do to a portfolio without any direction gaved. THANK YOU
even though im an illustrator, this series has been immensely helpful to get a new perspective, maybe find some new skills and practices that feed into my carreer. The value is immense. Thank you so much for the reflections, knowledge and value you put out
Wish you were my professor in Art School, lol 😂 they made everything sooo boring.
You’re a Purebred Master.
Those 3 sketches should be on Etsy... I'd buy all three for my office wall. Always a pleasure Feng... I've been watching these since you first started them way back in 2010??. As well as the gnomon DVD's you did when you were 12 :) - Enjoyed every one of them. Thanks for the freebees and your contribution to the community and the industry.
Golden content. I can't believe it's free
"rough 35min sketches" are my weekly finished pieces. Lmao.
Thank you so much for all these videos!! Learning a tonne. Love from Australia!
This is so interesting!! I am a musician and I am trying to find these design aspects in my music as well. It doesn't always translate 100% but there is a lot of overlap. It is a REALLY interesting way of thinking.
And it helps me make sense why I don't like 80% of music out there. It's because they only go to stage 3; the storytelling, the human story, the reliability is missing. It sounds good but it's like anyone could've written it.
Thank you Feng for these insights!!
Shit, I have never conidered that! Thats so cool, now make sense why I dont like a lot of music out there
Absolute goldmine of information. Thank you for continuing to make these despite the busy schedule Feng. Truly appreciated as someone from outside of the industry looking to get in.
Always so good to stop by here again and see what Feng is up to. Many many years now since I found this channel and its fabulous content.
Thank you for taking the time to do a video once again. Your information always comes at a great time. The reminders of "what to draw" and spend time on gold! "
Thank you for taking time to teach this. Game design graduate who graduated in 2005 and industry completely changed in the time i was in school.

The industry analysis and retrospective are awesome.
Man, this is the best portfolio advice I’ve ever seen ever!
Feng Zhu - "This episode is going to be a long one..."
Audience - *audible and giddy gasps*
FZ - "about an hour to an hour and a half"
Audience - *visible disappointment its not at least 3 hours long*
Teasing dude. 😅 btw don't apologise for such a gap, you are literally providing us with content that people half as talented would charge for, for free and that's in addition to getting all your own shit done and running schools and companies.
Nice that you spoke about the differences in the illustration and design sectors, so many people are confused about it, but also so many artist does it both with no problem.
Thank you for the great content. I love listening to you while I'm working. Feels like I'm back in Vis Com!
You’re the man. Thanks for all you’ve done.
Bro, your handwriting is Dope.

Thank you! Amazing as always!
I really appreciate your videos!
Thank you so much Feng!
I have a job for a long time already, Im still watching! Thanks Feng for doing this. Would be interesting to hear something about the problems that industry facing today. Like burnouts under the pressure, extra hrs work, abuse and so on, there was so many scandals on this topic even in the big companies. I thing young cats should be aware of this and be ready.
This is so AMAZING Lesson!!!
really helpful and informative, appreciate the time you take to put these videos together
Hey... so glad you're back!
thank you for sharing more design wisdom 🙇♂️🙏
Now this is some amazing design tips conveyed in a world that's worth re-designing! FF6 is my fav and to see it re-imagined with such care brings me hope.
@Feng, Extremely useful as always! My only confusion is about simplicity vs adding details, as I heard many times that keeping things simple and clean is much more difficult but better. Thank you!
some people will still jump into this without fundamentals.
My heart goes out to them.
Such awasome content! Thank you!
Thank you very much and deep bow for this great content! It is really helpful, especially because of so few videos about design in concept art. While this is the most important skill
This is amazing
the chef analogy one of my favorite analogies from Feng
amazing, thank you very much for the video
Yes !!!!! Been waiting for this!
Thanks, ur videos are so hepful
Thank you Feng! I want to give u a hug.
Hi Feng. Thanks so much for sharing this info. It is so needed and insightful. Can you do a video demo showing in detail how character design flows from base to costume and further? Im sure many others would like to see a real time process showing this.
very educational information.
"so just sit backk relaxx" :D love it....
Great video!
So informative. You are the best!
Thank you very much for this content😊🙏
Thank you for the awesome content
amazing
thank you! So usefull and informative episode! Very interesting!
Thanks a lot for this meticulously organized session. Seems like the Game Industry is pushing concept artists for more details more research and of course more 3D modelers that destroys all of that effort in a lighter simpler optimized low poly version :p But this job is a Road movie.. All the joy is in the exploration of paths of designs.
MASTERCLASS!
Wow man, I love you!
Great stuff as always, Feng.
That checklist is clutch!!
:D thanks Feng! This gives me hope for my portfolio.
Great informative VID,,,,Thank you Feng👍
This Is The Way
This is so helpful i printed this hand out
Magic!
A treasure. Thanks!
Thank you !
that's very helpful..
This series is as fundamental for production designers as were Richard Williams's lectures for animators.
Thank you !!!
