"I'm not on scene yet, but based on the size up get me three additional engine company's, and a HELICOPTER for observation" Yeah that's pretty much awesome......
By far, this is one of my most favorite videos... The BC kicked ass... Calm, cool and collected... LOVED it...
agreed....
I think LAFD is the only department in the US to use "Martinhorns" (hi/lo) as well as a electronic siren. Nice sound!
I heard it too. .thought I was hearing things.
I really like how the Battalion Chief and his Staff Assistant work together. That's team work at its finest.
Chief Jake and Chief West - two of the best!
I love the two tones! In the UK we started with bells, went on to two tones, and then the 'american' sirens, you've gone in reverse ;-)
I've noticed that. I tell ya what though, the BEST mix I've found out here to really move traffic...
Hi-Low + Federal Q + Rumbler
That is one GREAT combo!!
I'd love to see a FedQ in the UK, they'd scare the crap out of the old gits that dawdle round our road :-)
Initial dispatch was a B assignment. At least 6 fire companies and at least 2 Trucks. TF60 first on scene called for 4 additional Task Forces (TF). A TF is a Truck, Engine and Pump, total of 10 members per TF, each Engine/Triple has 4 members.
Great to hear two tone air horns being used.
They do really get drivers attention :)
Still watching, 8 years later.
I really like how the Battalion Chief and his Staff Assistant work together.
For sure. =]
The revving engine and the winding up turbo sounds amazing.
Holy crap that's crazy...$2.99 for a gallon of gas!???? 7:36. And great video!
Studies have shown that many drivers are unable to hear sirens on the interstate. Because of that, a lot of departments run code 2 (lights only) on interstates. Here in TN, we are never authorized to run code 2. When responding to calls we go code 1 (no lights/siren, normal traffic) or code 3 (lights and siren)
Hi guys - AWESOME video... Loved the Chief responding part too! Thanks!
@1:00 What the fuck German Hilo horn this is amazing i am a german firefighter :D
that hi-lo sounds like german fire trucks lol
There is no speed advantage of LA area highways with lights and siren. If traffic gets congested, lights and then siren will be employed.
Nice! Our Martinhorn!=)
Great Video!
My hi-lo used to clear traffic! and its just soooo LA.....
copper: There is not much room under the hood of cars these days. I doubt you could get one to fit.
Okay, thanks for your reply!
awesome vid.
Every Rookies Dream Words,''BATTALION 5 from TRUCK 60 WE have EXPOSURES TAKEN OFF BIG-TIME''.
thanx much
LAFD sure loves their tillers
@Wonkawillie77 That depends on the country. And there are really big differences other than just the frequency and tone. If you use a real good "Martin Horn" the effect will be as good as every wail or yelp. Trust me.
@0812201 The Engine 60 in Emergency! was from the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
@CDPDPatrolUnit an we in Europe start using US sirens (at least in Germany we start, in other countries like Norway or Danmark wail and yelp are used for many years, now also the rumbler
That's some nice Code 3 driving there :P
You should make more use of the two tone air horn. It certainly gets attention.
The tiller is the rear-section steering component for a two-piece (tractor/trailer) aerial ladder truck. The little house that the tiller man sits in is often called a doghouse.
OCD. This video is really old. Now its called Metro Fire.
I like Q's better while on the road. Q-sirens are pretty distinct to me and when it comes to checking the mirrors for the truck using it, I can hear them better than typical wail/yelp settings.
I do wish the Co. squad in our town would use the two-tone more often. :-)
THIS VIDEO GIVES YOU SOME INSIGHT FOR WHAT THE ARRIVING BATTALION CHIEF HAS TO GO THROUGH ESPECIALLY IF IF COMMAND HAS BEEN PASSED TO HIM FROM THE FIRSTDUE ARRIVING ENGINECO,.
"Tiller" is just another name for the tractor and trailer combination fire apparatus. Here In Hawaii we have quite a few. They're more maneuverable than straight sticks.
good luck to you man, hope you get hired there
My dad had a Federal model 28 under the hood of his 65 Ford. We used to get inside flip the toggle switch to siren and hit the horn ring to make it run....Talk about scream inside a garage.....
@ 4:36, driver takes a left & camera guy completely falls over
BES used to refer to "Bureau of Emergency Services." Today, it is called Emergency Services Bureau, or ESB.
The person with the white hat is the IC, Incident Commander. He's the head of coordinating everything that happens when fighting that fire.
All LAFD chiefs wear white helmets. The man wearing the white helmet labelled “BES” (Bureau of Emergency Services) was Greg West, now retired. best of the best.
Now what's that thing called where they put all the company's on it and assignment them. Or like smaller departments have a whiteboard kind of thing where they put the names of that company?
British two-tone on a American truck? Never seen that before
that was the control switch for the lights the siren is by mototrola and is apart of the radio
No. They are ladder pipes, and are controlled manually. Once they are set to wherever they need to be, then the firefighter sometimes leaves it, but most of the time they will stay.
Great Video!!
Why cant you guys use Phaser and Air horn?
They have some trucks with the Timberwolf on them. Mostly they have Federal Q's. Yeah I'v heard the Code 3 Eagle, sounds nice. B&M still makes "The Growler" and I see some departments still use them.....Wish they make one for behind the grill of unmarked PD cars.
Why do they have firefighters on the towers when the water cannons are activated? Aren't they controlled from the ground?
copper: Did KC get rid of those timberwolfs? There is a company called Eagle siren, from their website their siren sounds like it might be decent. It is 6" diameter, the timberwolf is 5".
B&M sirens have refurbed their sirens and can be purchased. B&M was quite popular in California before the electronics came out.
how loud was the siren inside the vehicle was tje siren loud at all
Wow that was a lot of smoke
@copper2150 i think its awesome that they have a Hi-Lo
i think every LAFD co came out for that
It is legal to use in conjunction with a siren. They are using it to clear intersections the same way an engine would use the air horn. But yes if they were using it as the primary it would not be in compliance.
While a majority of your keyboard commando's spew your garbage, most of you would have been running the other way from that fire. LAFD went to it. Not away from it but to it. That is the difference. There is so much waste in city government it would make most people sick to their stomach. Two areas that are not wasted are the LAPD and the LAFD. These guys put their lives on the line day in and day out. They see you at the worst possible time. God bless them for the job they do.
in the beginning you get to love a chevy silverado
What is BES? See the white helmet at the Command Post towards the end.
So, what exactly do you hate about them? Here people move out of the way often before they could possibly see us, they stop at intersection immediately, and not like with the Q, andother siren and constant honking like in the US and traffic still keeps on going...
and fyi: many countries in Europe also use, or use only wail and yelp sirens - in any variation!
That was some cool shit... LOVE it...
A 'Light Force' consists of one aerial truck and an engine or a pumper.
@gamerbob34 BES referred to Emergency Services Bureau. Today, it's called ESB, or... Emergency Services Bureau.
who makes the two tone on this vehicle?
Was this Chief the first due Chief & if so where the hell was he coming from?
Why did they shut off the lights and siren when they got on the highway in the beginning? You can hear the first due truck give a size up and report fire thrugh the roof.
The staff assistant seemed a little nervous!
sounds like the old uk blues n twos siren
hahahahaha martinshorn like we do in austria @ the fire :-)))
what kind of fire was it? residential or commercial?
cant we all just get along? this is a fight over a damn video people. who gives a damn. sit back and watch.
Martin horns - a lot better than that little pipsqueak Timberwolf siren some of their ambulances were using.
5:54 e60 was in sink hole accident did they get the engine out?
Something you also have to keep in mind when running lights and sirens on a freeway is that nobody can hear your sirens until you are 20 or so feet from the car. The freeway noise is so loud and you are going so fast that it makes it almost impossible to hear a siren when you are going 70+ MPH.
A Men!
What year and location, please?
@CFDChris237 You're right on that one, I wouldn't be surprised if that was actually a martinshorn :)
wow is very hard hear a martin horn in ee.uu-hi from chile¡¡¡
What is a tiller?
was this in a chevy silverado?
It can and should be done. I live in a town of 20,000 in northern Illinois and we have those sensors on the traffic signals.
The name of the Documentary is 'Smoke Eaters'.
If you look up above the rear view mirror, it looks like a unitrol
KCFD began using those Timberwolf sirens. My cat can make a better siren then those things can. Wish Federal would come back with the C-5 or model 28 sirens.
Roger. That was the incident.
Why does the LAFD shut the lights and siren off when they enter the freeway, then re-activate the response when they exit the freeway? Doesnt make sense to me during such a major incident.
i love our german sirens together with the US =)
sorry for my bad english
it does look like a unitrol the problem is the yelp on the unitrol is faster
What's a "light force?"
Is That a Fast Response
mototrola the siren is apart of the radio
I dont know if the LAFD can do this or not, but if they are running CODE 3 and they come to a 4 way intersection with signal lights, can they somehow via a remote control of some kind turn ALL of the traffic signals Red so everybody is stopped in all directions and they can safely traverse through the intersection? Is this documentry film available for rent and if so, would you be able to advise me please what the name of the film is, wouldf really appreciate a ton...Thank you
Does anyone know why they turned off their lights and siren on the freeway, and back on for the surface streets? Departmental policy?
useless to use the lights and sirens on the freeways because of all the heavy traffic.
Here in California, emergency vehicles cannot run code on freeways because they are already doing high speeds, and it's dangerous to move people over at 70 mph
Bro The CHP 🚔 Don't Like The LAFD 🚒🚑 2 Go Code 3 🚨 🔊 0n The Free Way
Just out of curiosity, was the driver newer? Maybe it was just his annoyance at the ringing, but towards the end the Battalion Chief said, "Just worry about driving." Which made me think, maybe he was new and wanted to help, or maybe he wasn't used to driving.
The Staff Assistant as they were called in those days, is supposed to be the right hand for the Chief he is driving and help however he can, but in cases like that just too much for him to do besides drive with multiple radios going, the buggy’s cell phone ringing, etc. Always best to get to the incident safely, then worry about everything else. Chief Jacobsen was just staying his normal calm and collected self and reminding his S/A to focus on driving and traffic.
how many Battalion Chiefs does LA have on duty at a given time?
at 5:10 the liquor store with the clown holding the sign is where they shoot those stop smoking ads
Spider Man
You can also see the liquor store getting robbed in the first few minutes of the movie "Blue Thunder"
I notice not too many people moved over.
Shelley Gaudreau It's LA. Most of the people that didn't pull over are illegal immigrants that have no clue what to do because they don't have a licence to drive.
+xXBuckOFiveXx you're stupid
Ivan Alvarado Stating facts makes me stupid? -Hispanic logic
Hate those things we still use federals in Overland Park
Yeppers it took 7 hours but they managed to do it without wrecking the pumper.
@Wonkawillie77 Fine. I don't get it why it is "dump". All that counts is to get attention.
What do the citizens think if European siren blast out from the fire services vehicles in US?
At the beginning there was a British siren. Since when did California have British siren.
Fire fighters are our heroes.
