Class 1 is essentially an insurance rating. The ISO is the leading supplier of statistical, underwriting, and actuarial information to the casualty insurance industry. The LAFD was one of the first department's to be issued a Class 1 designation. Fewer than 60 agencies nationwide have earned that honor. If the Fire Department has a Class 1 rating, then insurance rates would benefit. Today, Class 1 is no longer officially in effect. But, the LAFD keeps the stickers on! It's great PR.

Very interesting video, I liked it. It describes very well how tough the firemen's job is.

Leather looks cool, but is better suited to cold climates. The plastic helmets used weigh much less, are just as strong, if not stronger (opinion), and are better suited for wildfire and TA assignments.

@dmta Good comment - but leather is too heavy when fighting fire and wildfire in the heat of the west coast.

Many of us watching these kind of videos would love to know the causes of these fires to further our own knowledge and maybe help ourselves to better understand fire behavior and the dangers knowing various causes I think would help greatly

@pigjubby The LAFD is not Class 1. The ISO rating is related to the cost of insurance ratings, and the application to a fire agency is old fashioned and inaccurate. Your statements regarding firefighting ability have nothing to do with ISO and Class 1. It is a fire prevention and cost issue. The LAFD is considered to be one of the top five firefighting agencies for a city over one million in population.

@LAFD027 if they have a wildland, just do what we do here in mass. take off our leathers, and put on a wildland helmet
