  • Cameron and I replace the fabric on a manual Dometic patio awning. Replacing the awning fabrics on your RV is not a bad job usually and this one went smoothly too.

    Great Job! I was trained to do it exactly that way so, I know you did it correctly. However, since I work mostly by myself, I’ve had to develop some strategies to get it done. It is possible but it takes a bit longer.

    I had a tech replace the fabric on a 18’ Carefree of Colorado awning by himself. And I use his technique for putting a Sunblocker on and off.
    He had a small pulley with an eye and a short piece of cord. He would tie the pulley to one end of the arm at the channel by the roof. He would take one end of the cord and with the smallest vice grips I’ve seen would clamp it with a cloth folder over the new fabric to the new awning fabric. Then he would take the other end of the cord that is running through the pulley and pull it, guiding the new fabric in the channel.
    He had the roller about two feet extended from the roof and with the fabric hanging in a V he was able to guide and slide both ends in.
    I use a pulley setup and have put a grommet in the ends of the Sunblocker and I have a S hook tied to the end of the cord. I tie the pulley to one end of the brackets and I can pull the cord while guiding the Sunblocker in the slot.

    Great video. you have a great helper it's great to see someone his age getting in there and getting the job done. Well done Cameron.. so i have a question. My awning will pull down great but here it is : ) going back up it goes half way and gets tired : ) can i tighten the spring one one side or should i do both sides to be safe? it's on a 1995 Tiffin Allegro Buss Class A motor home and it has the metal cover that wraps over the awning when it's fully up and closed for storage..

    • @hillbillyrv
      @hillbillyrv  2 роки тому +1

      Probably 4-6 turns on each end should do the trick.

    Why not unbolt the tube from the brackets?

  • @gaetanlafleur3196

    Easier way. Did mine just cut the old awning with utility knife. Brought brackets down remove the ends and unwind both springs and fed awning in top slot then in tube and winded back both springs

    Looks like that dumb "D" shaped awning from a little while back that kept on breaking, now I'm not sure there's many parts available for them. I think they tried it for like 2 or 3 seasons and then went back to the original. Why mess with what works?? Good job.
    I have to do all my awnings by myself, got me a nice rig I made for a material lift, works good, don't have to hold much weight. I do feed the new fabric on with tube right on the ground, little easier.

    • @hillbillyrv
      @hillbillyrv  2 роки тому

      It was one of those dumb "D" shaped awnings. I can't believe it was still alive. I thought all these things got torn off the campers years ago by wind and rain.

      If you order a fabric from Dometic, it should be included. Sometimes they forget, like this one.

      I watch UA-cam just like you do. Sometimes I see something and say to myself. "Self, that looks easier than the way we have been doing that. Let's try that next time"
      Sometimes even a Hillbilly can learn a new trick.

    Been watching your videos for awhile now and just wish they were a little more in depth. Like to nite you say Cameron's up there just removing the lag screws. A 5 second shot of the screws hes removing would be nice. There are people that have never done it before looking for the knowledge from your videos to try it. the camera many times is way off somewhere. I'll stop cause I'm really not trying to criticize you. I could not do what you do.

    • @hillbillyrv
      @hillbillyrv  2 роки тому

      I know Darryl. I have a bunch of awning videos and I am pretty certain that the shot you are looking for would be on another video. Those kind of shots are a bit more difficult and time consuming, so we don't do them on every video.
