Excellent video. I should have watched prior to damaging my knuckles. I successfully installed a 16 foot awning ( by myself) after viewing your video numerous times. The installers are truly professionals and likeable as well. Thank you for sharing
I am a retired mech on cars, buses, military vehicles, Cessna airplanes, the CH-53 Sea Stallion, the F-4 Phantom, and the F-18. In the military our crews got into synch and were smooth and fast while taking their time. In civilian mechs I haven’t seen that…. UNTIL THIS VIDEO. Sure auto out crews are in synch and fast but they’re busting their asses to be fast. These guys were the epitome of “slow is smooth and smooth is fast”. I salute this awesome team.
Someone would pay for this kind of training That's why I watch a lot of his videos he is very knowledgeable and you can teach yourself. Make sure to stay subscribed so the channel can grow 👍🙂
Watched this video and went out this morning and followed the videos steps. Went so fast that I thought I may have done something wrong. The hardest part of the instal was having to run to the hardware store to get some 1/4 inch rivets because all I had was 1/8th inch rivets. Even my wife was impressed on the job and how well it went.
Money well spent! There is nothing more comforting than watching an experienced pro do their job, and knowing if you needed this type of work, you could rely on them to do the job right!!
I replaced the awning fabric on my 5th wheel once and it took a bit longer than that, about 5 hours longer. That is quite impressive. Thanks for sharing.
That's still impressive to do. 5th wheels can be more difficult due to heghts and many 5th wheel awnings have different length arms to add to the difficulty
In my days of RV Tech I did quite a few of these. These guys made it look so easy. I had to do quite a few alone. That is another story. I love this video so much I have watched it several times. At some point I will own one of those Milwaukee rivet guns. Don't need one since I am retired but I want one. Thanks for sharing :)
Watched and did what the two workers (seriously these guys are pros) did worked out fine you do need 3 people at times. Thanks to the camera man we watched the guys tightening of the springs directions and you guys were awsome....watch and learn we unwound it slowly and counted the number of rotations in our case 14. When we tightened our springs we counted 14 rev.
This video, with all of the little tricks and tips, made this a much easier task for me (and my helpers) today. So much easier using this method than what I"ve seen in other videos. THANK YOU
This method took myself and my daughter about 2 1/2 hours to complete. There were a few things different about our application that took time to figure out, but the end result was great. Thanks for sharing!
That was a teaching experience why not to do that yourself. After hearing the knuckle buster story I’ll be calling them guys when in need …thanks so much for sharing…🤘🏼
WOW !!!!!!!! That was amazing. Thanks James. Makes me feel like an amateur. Now I have an inferiority complex. I'll discuss it with my therapist on Monday. It will be ok. Maybe.
Thank you for a very informative video. Real professionals always make difficult tasks look so easy. It was great to see that during the video it was stressed to be very cautious when dealing with the danger of the coil spring tension - they can really bite the unwary if not handled correctly.
This video did it for us! Was going to use the "simple" method where you don't take off the non-blocking end cap, until I realized it was not passible to lock that end as shown in some videos. Also understand why these guys use the spongy cord for the valence. I had to sculpt the tip of the very hard cord that came with our awning fabric in the shape of an arrow tip to insert it properly. Thanks a ton, made this job accessible!
I used this method today for the first time. It went great! Still took much longer than these guys overall but I will keep practicing. So many details that make the process much smoother. Huge thanks for sharing!
best video yet on awning replacement, nothing like watching true professionals. Thanks for putting this up, just tackled mine this morning and went pretty smooth.
First time doing this. Watch a some videos on this and yours is the absolute best. Your methods are easier than the others and saved me time. DIYs are great but it’s best to watch the guy who’s getting payed every day to do this. Thanks
The amount of professionalism these guys have is a refreshing sight to see. This is the same way I doing fabric replacements. Can’t say I’m as fast as them yet. I’ve done a fabric this way by myself before, would not recommend it though haha.
Just did mine following this video to a T. If you don't want to get slowed down I would clean out the upper awning channel very well BEFORE trying to slide in the new awning material. A little dirt/grit will slow down the sliding into the channel tremendously. thanks!
Ok, my wife and I are installing our awning currently and it has not slid in anywhere near as smooth as that one! I got about 2/3rds of the way and it doesn’t want to go any further.
Just finished installing my new 18 ft awning. This video was super helpful! I did have to reposition the locking mechanism to get the locking arm in a position where it was better accessible with the extension rod. Much appreciated!
I've watched several videos now showing how to replace the fabric on an A&E awning, none of them have the aluminum weather shield. At what point do you install the weather shield, and how hard is it to do? I assume it is the last step which means you are wrangling a semi flexible 18-foot-long metal cove and trying to slide it over 2 beads while standing on a stepladder working 11 feet above the ground.
1:51 could you repeat what he said here? About WHAT he was filing down? & Why? 5:42 so, when I go to replace mine, this strip you put in here.. can it be re-used? & what is that piece called?
Them guys work great together thank you for the video awesome if I know of anybody needs that type of work I will recommend them guys 🇺🇸🇵🇷 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼✌🏼🛠️⚙️
Great vid!! Quick question..why did they take both springs out? Seems like it all could have been done with just releasing tension on both (as they did) then just removing the right side cap_spring assembly?
Thank you for the video. Very helpful. On a power O-Matic awning. How many times do you need to wind the spring up on the opposite side 14 complete turns.?
how would you install a Dometic awning with a metal weatherguard? I understand that the acrylic fabric is somehow attached to the metal weatherguard which might complicate the installation.
Great video but question #2 is what fabric is the best replacement? Not asking about vendor/manufacturer (unless you're willing to share your opinion) but rather which material?
I have a Dometic 9100 power awning and 14 wraps on the spring end turns out to be waaaaay too many. Wondering why if the tube diameter is the same and the springs look the same.
How much did that cost you? We have to do ours soon and I don’t want to get overcharged. The tech I use charges about 300 fur labor if I buy the awning myself
thanks guys very helpful. I noticed the lead guy rotated the spring anti clockwise but the the other guy went clockwise to tension. How does that work?
How do these guys size up an awning? Do they have some kind of chart for each model of RV? or do they depend on the owner to measure the width? What is the worst trouble you can run into doing awning work? thanks
Such a pleasure to watch people who are masters in their trade. Amazing teamwork! James how long would you estimate that replacement job took start to finish? As always, thanks for the great content.
I found a complete awning set for my camper , it is used but it is all there... problem is the awning is 2 feet too long, does anyone know if the roller tube can be cut down the 2 feet to fit my camper? any info would be greatly appreciated.
Going to be sooner than I thought. Last weekend south of Safford we were in a ferocious crosswind on the highway when the awning unrolled and got ripped up before I could pull over. This is our first RV and I have been reading about this dangerous design defect which allows the awning to unroll in a crosswind. It is a 20 year old A&E 8500 with the aluminum weather guard so it is a more expensive fabric with the two extra inserts. What are your favorite reasonably priced suppliers for awning fabric? Thanks
If doing this replacement on a motorized awning is there any concern with "timing" the motor? In other words, we obviously wouldn't have to wind the springs. So, can we just install the motor and without concern of it being in any certain position?

It’s DIY gold when you can find a video like this of pros doing a job.
Most vids are done by folks who know even less than me.
This a good example of niches in the business! Young people who are looking to learn life long skill sets should be watching this stuff.
He was a rep for Carefree and knows the product very well.
It's almost like a ballet when two people work that well together. Every movement has a purpose and no wasted effort.
It was very impressive
I noticed that too and was thinking it was like a well rehearsed dance.
I would buy tickets to this!
More so than a ballet.

Do these people work the pit crew at the Indy?
Two guys who’ve done this a thousand times. Do it in their sleep. Thanks James.
no doubt., Thanks!

What size rivets are those? This is the same awning on my 2008 R Vision and I'm doing the awning next weekend.
