Arlene Francis admitted, the last time she was on the show, that she didn't watch television. That makes for a very out-of-touch player on Match Game. The game is LOADED with popular cultural references.

    H/H match update:
    ...
Our stalwart regulars Charles, Brett, and Richard are joined by all "veterans" (as Gene often puts it) once again for this 113th week of Match Game which originally aired in early October 1975.
Bob Barker is back for his third week (of 8 total). Bob is another celeb who will sit in the #5 chair (for 3 weeks in 1978) following Richard's departure. Bob has already been chosen for the H/H twice, but hasn't yet scored a win.
Arlene Francis also returns for her third week (of 6 total). She was chosen for the H/H once, but didn't match. Interestingly, she and Bob were already on the panel together, way back on the second week of the show in 1973, along with Della Reese, Richard Dawson, Richard Thomas, and Miss Michael Learned!
And sixth-seat semi-regular Fannie Flagg is back! (At 90 weeks, she's #4 on the list of most frequent Match Game celebs, surpassed only by our regulars).
Coming into this week, Richard has been the overwhelmingly dominant choice for the head-to-head match for over a month now. Of the past 20 H/H matches, Richard has played 18 of them, matching 8 of those 18 times.
Well, let's see who the winning contestants choose this week...
... all I can say is Good Gravy, Marie!!! My jaw dropped when the returning champion (who scored 5 grand with Richard last time) selects Brett today! (Brett did match both contestants in the first two regular questions today, and she had just come up with the #1 audience response despite being chosen third. She's also the second most selected celebrity for the H/H match overall, today being her 48th attempt.) This is Brett's first time at the H/H since episode 541.
(I've noticed that there are two types of champions: The ones who choose the same celeb every single time, win or lose, and the ones who rotate, choosing two or even three different celebs during their reign.)
    Today's H/H question: "William ________"
I immediately thought of William Tell, and it looked like Brett started writing immediately too, and hesitated only a moment before sticking the card in the slot. The contestant was a bit more hesitant, but she finally said Tell, and when she did, a look of dismay came over Brett...
    ...but she was just acting!
Brett scores her 19th H/H match.
This is the first time that someone other than Richard has had a successful H/H match since Patti Deutsch back in episode 538. Also, this puts Brett back ahead of Richard in accuracy stats. The two have traded places at least 7 or 8 times so far, and they never seem to drift very far apart in overall accuracy (despite common perception).
And let's not forget Charles and Fannie, who both have a better track record than Brett or Richard! Maybe they'll get a chance to help a contestant win money this week too.
Here's the updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy:
    Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts).
    Gary Burghoff - 83.3% (5 wins in 6 attempts).
TIE: Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts).
TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts).
    Fannie - 50% (9 wins in 18 attempts).
    Betty - 46.9% (15 wins in 32 attempts).
    Charles - 45.2% (19 wins in 42 attempts).
Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts).
    Brett - 39.6% (19 wins in 48 attempts).
    Richard - 39.2% (121 wins in 309 attempts).
    Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts).
*These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 561, excluding the lost/missing episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")

My thesaurus lists "truss" as a synonym for "brace". I think that's what Carol was trying to get at, but couldn't think of the word. It should have been a match. In fact, "cast" should have been a match, since a cast is bandages soaked in plaster to brace a broken bone. Isn't that a bandage/brace by definition?

    • @LynxSouth
      @LynxSouth 3 роки тому +3

I agree, especially about "truss" and about that being what Carol meant, but expecting Ira to think more than superficially is asking a bit much. Even that is hit or miss.
