Even in 1985, EVERYONE in the stadium was singing the words to Bohemian Rhapsody (and the audience was not comprised of just Queen fans… as a matter of fact, Queen was the “wild card” who did not commit to taking part in Live Aid until the last minute, so a large part of the audience did not even know Queen would be performing that day!)
When we first watched this, my sister and I swore we had heard Elvis sing Crazy Little Thing Called Love, only to learn it was written two years after Elvis died.
Iconic performance. These are all Queen original songs, no covers. Freddie wrote Crazy Little Thing Called Love as a tribute to Elvis after he had already passed away. Freddie wrote that song in 10 minutes while soaking in a bath. If you watch you will see that Brian plays 3 different guitars on that particular song. Thank you for your reactions.

72,000 people in attendance and 1.9 Billion people watching from around the world. Freddie performed against doctors orders with a throat infection. When the boys left the stage, a Prince from Dubai donated 1 million dollars. Live Aid made 140 million dollars for famine in Africa.
Freddie had a bad throat and was told by a doctor not to perform. He said it was like gargling with glass. However, Queen did perform and smashed it. Each act was given 20 minutes to perform and if they went over the time they were cut off. Queen finished exactly on time.
To give people some idea just how good queen was that day, the legendary David Bowie was heard by a reporter to exclaim "how the fuck am I supposed to follow that?", also when asked which instrument do you play? To which Freddie replied "the audience darling"

This was a charity event but not for AIDS. It was for starving people in Ethiopia and Africa. It started with Bob Geldof of (Boomtown Rats) getting a bunch of UK musicians together in 1984. They called the group Band-Aid.... the song *Do They Know it's Christmas* Written by Bob Geldof to raise money for the 1983-1985 famine in Ethiopia. Recorded: 25-26 November 1984. Live because it was live around the world, Aid because people aided by donating money to the charity.
I think you have that wrong, that only die-hard fans knew lyrics to Bohemian Rhapsody. When they bought their tickets for that day (only £25!! per ticket), Queen had not even been added to the playlist
People in the UK are born singing BoRhap. It was a huge hit! I can’t remember even learning the lyrics but I know everyone of them. I am 66 so I am old.
I am 60 years old, met my girlfriend in 1982, in 1985, we sat through the 16 hours concert of live aid together, she went onto be my wife, any my point being little know fact that never gets a mntion because queen stole the show, quite rightly so, the 16 hour show was UK, US and Australia, with some smaller countries do some fillers, it was achieved because of the times ZONES, the earth rotates, so as one show started for expample, in the UK 6pm, when there show finished, US had caught up for there show to start 6pm in the US and so on, you get the drift Phil colins played at webley UK on the drums, doing IN THE AIR TONIGHT, the little know fact, is that he then jumped on a plane, flew against the time zones, buing him an hour or two, and played at Philly IN THE AIR TONIGHT at the US part of the concert, in the same clobal concert, on two continents
Written in 10 minutes in the bathtub. If you watch the video you can see Brian switching guitars 2 times. He starts with an acoustic then goes on to the Stratocaster for true 60’s vibe and finishes with his famous red special! Elvis would have been thrilled to have this song dedicated to him.
Queen didn't headline this 16 hour concert. They played in the middle of it. It wasn't their last show either. The last Queen Concert with Freddie Mercury was August 9, 1986 at Knebworth House in Hertfordshire, England. Freddie passed away 5 years later, November 1991.
Great reaction! Live Aid was made worldwide, with 2 main stages (Wembley UK, and JFK Stadium, in Philadelphia USA), with some live performances from Sidney, Moscow and Japan. It was along the entire day of the biggest satellite broadcast at the time. T. Freddie was the best ever, no one can touch him he even sang Opera & smashed it. He is still missed so much ❤❤❤❤
From what I've been told, Freddie / Queen weren't actually on the list to play and were a last minute addition... can you imagine what this show would have been like without the band. 🤩
Great reaction, guys! Thank you! Freddy was and is still frontman nr. 1 for sure - amazing karma, presence! ...but don´t forget about the band - they deliver big time!! And I love you black cat that jumped up in the beginning! 🤩
People also ask Who originally did Crazy Little Thing Called Love? Queen "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" is a song by the British rock band Queen. Written by Freddie Mercury in 1979, the track is included on their 1980 album The Game, and also appears on the band's compilation album Greatest Hits in 1981.
Bohemian rhapsody was at #1 in the charts for a record 9 weeks in 1975-76. Queen wasn’t even on the play list so these weren’t die-hard Queen fans. But they could sing the lyrics.
Assuming that Crazy Little Thing Called Love was a cover…oy! And Queen played up to 300,000 in Rio, so this audience was huge, but it really was something Queen knew how to do, perform in large stadiums. By their last world tour in 1986 were all stadiums around the world. Bohemian Rhapsody was a huge hit everywhere in the world almost immediately. It gained legendary status over time, but that’s because no ine ever did a ding better. The talent, intelkigence, and musical genius it took…I loved it immediately in 1975, and it’s been my best fave song if all time since. .
Satellite Broadcast...no Internet, phones, ...broadcast to US peons that had 3 channels, and PBS. The only other satellite Broadcast before in music was Elvis Aloha from Hawaii. I was 15:, watched all 12 hour Broadcast...so glad you get to witness history.
About the audio...now most of the live performance singing is improved by autotune. Freddy didn't even have inears! So just pure talent you are listening. Absolutely amazing ❤
Hi, search UA-cam for Roger cam Live Aid…if there isn’t I’ve seen one for Roger at the Wembley concerts….i’ve looked at the John Deacon cam at Wembley…they’re brilliant🤩
Live Aid was held simultaneously at Wembley Stadium in London, attended by about 72,000 people, and John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, attended by 89,484 people. one-third of the global population tuning into a TV broadcast at the same time. That's what happened on July 13, 1985, when 1.9 billion people watched musicians perform in London and Philadelphia to raise money for famine-stricken Ethiopians. The people in Philadelphia watched Queen on jumbotrons..
Lol only die hard fans knew this song, it was a huge hit when it came out (long before this concert) and has been ever since, everyone knew and knows the words, Queen has been hugely popular since their very start. The song Bohemian rhapsody almost from when it came out has regularly been voted the best song of all time. This 16 hour concert had a global audience of about 1.4 billion then approximately 40% of the then world population.
Queen - Band Aid Concert Freddy and the audiance were so good. Saw the concert on tv back than. Maximum atmosphere among the spectators. Why? Because there were no smartphones to distract the audiance. In 2024 this isn't possible any more. Millenials can no longer concentrate on one thing. Always distracted by their smartphones.
The other performers back stage waiting for their time to perform stopped what they were doing backstage because they knew Queen stole the show. It's said Elton John followed them and said, "How am I supposed to follow that."
in 1992, the " bohemian rhapsody" returns to be more popular after ft in the movie "Wayne's World" and got new fans and along the way , then with the movie about them again became more popular, now with so many reacts in the internet to the film and this live aid footage. a song that mark not only one generation, but inumerous along the way till today.
Referencing the movie as factual on many fronts is a mistake. They had finished a concert tour just 6 weeks before this performance including with audiences of 200,000 in South America; Argentina and Brazil. (Video available on UA-cam, "Rock in Rio"), then on to Australia and Japan. They hadn't broken up, just been out of the country for months. Freddie wasn't diagnosed with HIV for another 2 years and didn't tell the band for a few years after that. There are several videos and docunmentaries that will show the many major errors of the film.
, rumour has it that he wrote it in about 10 mins whilst he was in the bath! Fun fact : Brian May( lead guitar & vocals) is now Dr Sir Brian May having been knighted by King Charles 111! Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺
Bob Geldof, Midge Ure and Harvey Goldsmith's idea got into fruition by this concert, but Queen was a bit hasitating whether to take a part of it. Finally Bob Geldof turned directly to Freddie: "Fred, why wouldn't you do it? The entire stage was built for you practically. Darling, the world. He (Freddie) laughed and said: Oh, you have a point, Mr Geldof." The band hired the Shaw Teather in London and rehearsed all the seconds of the show a week long. The point of this concert is to wake people up to starvation and famine to make everyone realise just what’s going on, and do something positive that will hopefully touch people.
Concert with 60 bands for the starving people in Ethiopia. Queen didn’t do covers! Freddie wrote Crazy little Thing called love as a tribute to Elvis. Queen performed at 6:41 pm. They were given that slot. The bands had each 20 minutes. It was in London and Philadelphia with 1.5 BILLION watching.
Many of your "facts" are incorrect. Crazy was written as a tribute to Elvis in 79...Elvis died in 77. Bohemian Rhapsody was huge, way before this (or the movie)
No-one seems to have mentioned the fact that this isn't really "complete" because it doesn't have Is This The World We Created (the Mercury/May encore later in the event)
This live aid concert was seen by 1.8 bllions peoples all around the world . on tv broadcast by satellite oh yes in Philadelphia in stadium and Australia . Anecdote , I think David Bowie or Elton Jones how had to go after said to Freddy when he went out of the stage . " Bastard. you stole the show to night , what i gone a do now ."
Yes bo rap has become more popular In uk it was no 1 for 9 wks Played on the radio a lot Wasn't well know world wide But known beyond die hard fans in rhe uk
the idea geldof had was a 'global jukebox of hits' so bands had to perform their own music. some of today's 'artists' (the industry manufactured ones) might have trouble filling even this short set with 'original' hits like queen did. elton john was there and David Bowie followed Queen
Great reaction, but shame on you Queen never did any covers !!!! Freddie wrote Crazy Little Thing in the bath tub in 10 minutes as a tribute to Elvis, they were the OG's of everything. I was there in that crowd at 16 years of age and have been a Queen fan ever since and am now 55. I saw them live twice the following year in 1986, one again at Wembley and then Freddie's ever last LIVE performance with Queen at Knebworth in August 1986. RIP you beautiful man you were and still are a LEGEND. Stay safe from Manchester UK
lol only die hard Queen fans knew Bohemian Rhapsody words in 1985. God bless american ignorance which knows no limits. This Song was votedmthe best Song of the century 5 years prior to live aid.
Sorry, just found you; so, I’m late to the Comment Section! I’m a 66 y/o Glamma. You seem to enjoy the background of things. And, I’m a Trivia sponge, so here goes: FUN FACTS FIRST: The kisses are for his Mom who was watching him on Television. MATTER OF FACTS: They had just completed a Tour a month b4. So, they went & rented a Stadium to practice the performance. He ended up with a Throat Infection & the Doctor highly recommended he not do it bc he might lose his musical ability. He said no! Can you tell he had a severe throat infection? Most people think he was drinking booze from the cups bc on the piano. He’s drinking Honey & Tea. His command of the Audience was more than coincidence it was miraculous. Considering there were so many people there the sound was getting absorbed through them. So the people @ the back we’re following his hand gestures bc the actual sound hadn’t even reached them b4 the next sound was coming @ them. Go back & watch what his hands are doing & what the Audience is doing. NEXT: Radio Gaga is celebrating Radio bc M-TV is just getting started. LADY GAGA was a huge Freddie Fam growing up, so That was where she came up with HER STAGE NAME! You have to listen to the words to really understand the meaning. Most of us didn’t have a clue what a Band looked like unless we saw them in Person! NEXT-MICROPHONE. At sometime along the way a Microphone Stand broke, so that was the only spilt second solution they could come up with. He realized the freedom he had to move, dance, & engage the Audience. NEXT MICHAEL JACKSON & ELVIS CONNECTION on Song THIS THING CALLED LOVE: It was written as his homage to Elvis-Freddie was a big fan. But, he just wasn’t sure about the song bc he didn’t want to taint Elvis. SO, he played it for Michael J. (Yes, they were friends!). And Michael told him he HAD TO, he said “Freddie, you have to”! (Can’t you just see that!?). NEXT FREDDIE’s VOICE. HE HAD 4 extra teeth so that’s the reason he had such an overbite. He had the ability to naturally flow from Octave to Octave. It was a natural progression, for him. SCIENTIFICALLY: Test were done on his Voice. He was able to use his Throat muscles on either side of his vocal cords. Which is normally seen in some Opera Singers. His Vocal Range was from Low Bass F, to High Soprano F! They were extremely surprised to find out that he could go from about 92Hz to 784Hz, effortlessly! See ACTUAL REPORT BELOW: nyone who has listened to a Queen track knows that Freddie has a unique ability that still has not been truly replicated since. His ability to blend highs, lows and mid range notes cohesively and with immense precision. This skill was due to the fact that Freddie was able to create faster vibrato and harmonics than any other singer at the time. Not only this, he was able to shift through registers effortlessly. Although he naturally held a baritone voice, he primarily sang as a tenor and of course had no problem then shifting into soprano parts. One study on Freddie’s vocal range even confirmed that he was able to vary from about 92.2 Hz to 784 Hz, meaning he was reliably able to hit notes from the booming low of F#2 to the high pitch G5 - that covers a full three octaves! LEAD GUITARIST: Brian May, is playing on a Guitar he & his Father made. When he first starting to learn they were too poor to afford a high end guitar. So, they just made one! They made out of an old cabinet his mother was going to throw awayThe included some “extras” that would normally have to be separate instruments to get all those features (think Concerts when you see guitarist changing Guitars depending on the Song….that’s why he didn’t)! I’m sorry to take up your Valuable Time, and I thank you. You need anymore Trivia I’m your G’Ma go to. My Brain is full, especially with music! LAST INTERESTING INFO: When he is waving his arm it is to tell the cameramen which way he is going bc he’s moving around so much. When he kicks his legs backwards that is getting over all the cables, that are on the Stage. TV Cameras were not cordless back in the day!! And, “We Will Rock You”, is actually a Prelude to “We Are The Champions”. (It is really all 1 Song!)
We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions are not one song, but many radio stations did play them back to back as if they were. They were written by two different people.
@@TwistypooBrian wrote we will rock you to bring the audience into the music. People wanted to sing with them and people didn’t really do that back in the day so this was a new concept So the very simple clap clap stomp stomp was born and the rest is Rock History. Freddie wrote We are the Champions. I am at a loss about the background on the song. The radio started playing the songs together so it became a thing and now Brian even says the songs have to be played together.
My main memory of Live Aid was Phil Collins playing at both shows, and the Led Zeppelin reunion, that ended up being really bad. So disappointing. But there were massive names playing.

Who originally did Crazy Little Thing Called Love?
Queen
"Crazy Little Thing Called Love" is a song by the British rock band Queen. Written by Freddie Mercury in 1979, the track is included on their 1980 album The Game, and also appears on the band's compilation album Greatest Hits in 1981.
“The note heard around the world”
Bohemian rhapsody was at #1 in the charts for a record 9 weeks in 1975-76.
Absolutely amazing ❤
my ONLY complaint for this performance is how little footage of Roger Taylor is in it. Wish a cameraman had gotten some shots of him.
Queen - Band Aid Concert
Freddy and the audiance were so good.
Freddie wrote Crazy Little Thing CalledLove. He wrote it in 1979 as a trivute to Elvis. It is a Queen Original.
in 1992, the " bohemian rhapsody" returns to be more popular after ft in the movie "Wayne's World" and got new fans and along the way , then with the movie about them again became more popular, now with so many reacts in the internet to the film and this live aid footage. a song that mark not only one generation, but inumerous along the way till today.
👍👍WOW, Old School Classic Awesomeness!! 🖖❤
The movie was good, this is real& this wasn't a Queen crowd/they were a last minute addition.
Crazy little thing called love was written after Elvis passed as a dedication to Elvis
It was also written in 10 minutes in the bathtub. Lol
_"poetic license"_
, rumour has it that he wrote it in about 10 mins whilst he was in the bath!
For 20 minutes the UK was ruled by a different Queen 🤘🇬🇧 by the way, Bohemian Rhapsody was a mega hit in the UK in 1975!
Great reanalysis guys x
Crazy little thing called love, isn't a cover. It was Freddie's tribute to Elvis.
Freddie wrote Crazy Little Thing Called Love, it's not a cover.
Supposedly In fact, elvis met Freddie and asked him write write it for him
As Austrian i like the Austrian flagg at 20:03. Saw the concert on TV back than.
7:58 the best moments start, because kitty is here
Many of your "facts" are incorrect. Crazy was written as a tribute to Elvis in 79...Elvis died in 77. Bohemian Rhapsody was huge, way before this (or the movie)
Elton John said they stole the show and he also preformed.
BEST FRONT MAN EVER!!
NOT Elvis cover!!
He wrote this song in 10 minutes in a BATHTUB!
THANK GOD HE WAS THE CENTER OF ATTENTION …… think about it… there was no QUEEN without FREDDIE MERCURY .
RIP Freddie
It wasn't a cover, it was written by Freddie
No-one seems to have mentioned the fact that this isn't really "complete" because it doesn't have Is This The World We Created (the Mercury/May encore later in the event)
They were a last minute participant
This live aid concert was seen by 1.8 bllions peoples all around the world . on tv broadcast by satellite oh yes in Philadelphia in stadium and Australia . Anecdote , I think David Bowie or Elton Jones how had to go after said to Freddy when he went out of the stage . " Bastard. you stole the show to night , what i gone a do now ."
They only have originals. The best band ever.
Ani Lorak and Polina Gagarina ❤❤❤
by 1985 Queen was well known
"Crazy Litle Thing Call Love" es una canción de Freddy Mercury, no de Elvis Presley jaja
Excelente video!!!
Freddie king of rock 🤘 of all times.
Freddie for ever ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👍
I am an AJ Fan but Freddie ist fort me the Goat. ❤❤❤
Not a cover, this is an original song by Queen.
Yes bo rap has become more popular
In uk it was no 1 for 9 wks
Played on the radio a lot
Wasn't well know world wide
But known beyond die hard fans in rhe uk
Dire Straits were also great at this show and it was kind of breakthrough event for U2
the idea geldof had was a 'global jukebox of hits' so bands had to perform their own music. some of today's 'artists' (the industry manufactured ones) might have trouble filling even this short set with 'original' hits like queen did. elton john was there and David Bowie followed Queen
Crazy little thing called love is not a cover. Freddie wrote it in his bathtub in 5 minutes.
Crazy little thing called love is NOT a cover,Freddie wrote it...
lol only die hard Queen fans knew Bohemian Rhapsody words in 1985. God bless american ignorance which knows no limits. This Song was votedmthe best Song of the century 5 years prior to live aid.
👍👍👍👍👍👍🔥🔥🔥🔥
See ACTUAL REPORT BELOW:
nyone who has listened to a Queen track knows that Freddie has a unique ability that still has not been truly replicated since.
The guitar was made from a fireplace mantle and a bike rack and other miscellaneous parts.
It’s called Crazy Little Thing Called Love
Not a cover version just written in the Elvis style
Please react queen somebody to love in montreal 81.
Queen never do covers. EVER. They were and will always be the Originals. Freddie did a cover; The Great Pretender in his solo career.
They absolutely did do covers. Big Spender, Jailhouse Rock, etc.. when life at least.
@@Twistypoo Not as LPs or part of an album
Radio gaga, is from where lady gaga took is name.
