You ought to check out the video of the crowd singing Bohemian Rhapsody before the Green Day concert. If you want to get chills, this will do it. Queens music will never die..
I second this notion. I've seen the video, and at one point the wind catches the cymbal, kind of like Freddy looking down and reminding the crowd they are his favorite instrument.
It wasn’t only Queen who realized they had been sensational. Paul Gambaccini, who was part of the BBC broadcasting team at Live Aid, recalled the awe among other superstar musicians watching backstage. “Everybody realized that Queen was stealing the show,” said Gambaccini. These were the very words Elton John uttered when he rushed into Mercury’s trailer after the set. “You bastards, you stole the show,” joked the charismatic star. “Queen smoked ’em. They just took everybody. They walked away being the greatest band you’d ever seen in your life, and it was unbelievable,” said Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters. “And that’s what made the band so great; that’s why they should be recognized as one of the greatest rock bands of all time, because they could connect with an audience.” “It was the perfect stage for Freddie: the whole world” Their impact was summed up by Geldof. “Queen were absolutely the best band of the day,” the Live Aid organizer said. “They played the best, had the best sound, used their time to the full. They understood the idea exactly, that it was a global jukebox. They just went and smashed one hit after another. It was the perfect stage for Freddie: the whole world.”
Freddie Mercury moves us still. He will never die because we keep him in ours hearts and minds forever. (I am an atheist but he makes me want to believe in the perfection of creation. His loss - and David Bowie - really made me weep when I heard the news).💔💔💔💔💔

To answer your question. Freddie may have had in inkling that he wasn't well at this point but he didn't find out that he was HIV positive until 1987 (despite what the movie says, don't even get me started on that!). Also, Queen have always been a 4 piece band, it wasn't just Freddie then a band. They never officially split up but between 1982 and 1984 they had a little break and Freddie did indeed release a solo album, so did Roger. And again, despite what the movie says, Queen never "reformed" just for this gig. They had an album out the previous year, The Works, that had a full tour.
@@mightyV444Movies are dramatisations, they don’t have to stick to fact per se. Or rather, they don’t have to stick to the correct timeline. Which was the case with Bohemian Rhapsody; it stuck for the most part, to fact, but re-jigged the timeline of events to fit the story they were telling. Only documentaries “have” to stick to fact. It’s just a shame that a lot of folks don’t often make the distinction between the two mediums
@@mariannetuite7411 - Yeah, I definitely prefer actual documentaries. Movies like that one come across to me like the real story wasn't exciting enough to the producers and they felt the need to change it. It's fine with me if other people are okay with that, but I prefer authenticity myself 🙂
As I recall, this is when Queen’s popularity had dropped off a little bit. 2 minutes into this set Freddie had the crowd in the palm of his hand. Such a great front man and powerful voice. And Brian May, John Deacon and Roger Taylor are brilliant musicians. Don’t forget to give them some love. So many great songs to choose from. Stone Cold Crazy, Death on Two Legs, Play the Game and Who Wants to Live Forever are some of my personal favorites.
If you talk to the band they will say it was all Freddie but we all know that it takes four men to make this magic. They couldn't hear anything on stage, they were such professionals that all they needed was a look , a turn of the head, and they knew what to do.
Freddie (and Queen) were used to playing HUGE venues. They had just come off a world tour where they played in front of 115,000 people in South America. He knew he had to make huge, exaggerated gestures so everyone could see him.
I am 75 years old. I cannot express enough how it delights me “rediscovering” this music with you. I appreciate your openness and endless passion. Keep it up! “Gramma hugs” from far away! ☺️☺️🫶🏽❤️
Something to remember was this was live in London and Philadelphia. 70K+ in London and 100K in Philly. The bands would switch back and forth locations so the stage can get reset. So the big screens at each venue were playing the performance of the other venue. Now imagine all that clapping and the call/response happening in front of Freddie and happening 3000 miles away at the exact same time.
"Barcelona" duet...just for the sheer stage presence. Freddie struts out with his arms wide, his entire torso open to the audience, owning every inch of the stage like he always does. Unbelievable. A master. Will adore Freddie forever.
You have to give it to the whole band. Freddie had amazing band mates. All super talented and had great voices themselves! Brian May is one of a kind 😊
Just bumped on this one.... the best 20 mins in rock music history. If you ain't listening to Queen then you are not listening to real music RIP beautiful "soul painted as the wing of a butterfly". Love forever!
Crowd participation is a spiritual experience. I've cried many times at gigs during mass singalongs and I've gone to see bands at festivals for the only reason that I knew there would be mass singalongs, even though I wasn't really a fan. The feeling of unity with thousands of people through music is indescribable :)
Don’t question why a piece of music makes you emotional, ride it. Music is meant to be evocative, to make us feel. It’s a blessing to find something that does that. That we connect to that deeply I cry at some point during every live performance I’ve ever seen
Really great reaction! Live Aid was a global fundraiser to help fight famine in Ethiopia. 16 hours of music broadcast from Wembley and JFK Stadium in Philadelphia in 20 minute sets, you just watched the best 20 minutes of all the performances. 39 years later I still get goosebumps. There's a short song performed by Freddie and Brian on the acoustic guitar later that evening called Is this the World We Created. 👑
Nobody did it like Freddie! The most Unique Frontman in Rock history!! I love ❤️ Queen!! My regret was not going to see them! RIP Freddie 🙏 may you be pain free & rest. ❤❤️〽️
You have a unique ability to just let these songs in. Having such an open and curious mind combined with the ability to think critically about what you're seeing and hearing is quite a gift! For me, it's what makes your channel so compelling. Two more great Queen live performances: Somebody to Love and Save Me both live from Montreal 1981 And a third, since you enjoy massive audience participation Love Of My Life [Rock In Rio '85]
Love of My Life shows that Freddie does not always have to be his big. bombastic self. He just sits down and lets his voice carry one of the most beautiful songs he wrote, and Brian May's accompaniment brings me to tears every damn time. From one side of the spectrum to the other, pure brilliance....just another part of Queen's mastery.
These live performances have got to blow younger listeners away. There's just nothing like it these days. The raw power and range of Freddie Mercury's voice. Nothing close to this today or ever, really. Hadn't heard this concert in awhile and it's even better than I remember. Love your reaction MollyBoy! I found your channel quite by accident tonite and I love your genuine joy listening for the first time to the Great Freddie Mercury live! He was unbeatable and backed up by Brian May on lead guitar... magic!
Don't watch yet. Get to know the rest of the catalog first, better appreciation for it later. It is a tough watch though. That and only the good die young
Freddy Mercury was one of a kind performer. Nobody will ever come close to being as great of a performer like Freddy Mercury. He was a showman. R.I.P Freddy Mercury.
The greatest 20 minutes of live music you'll ever hear. Nobody could command a crowd like Freddie. He is unmatched and will never be bettered. The greatest performance of all time from the greatest band of all time
No, you get it. This is a once in a lifetime performance from a once in a lifetime performer (and band). Fairly well acknowledged as the set of the entire Live Aid and arguably the best videotaped live rock performance in history.
I’m probably going to butcher this but an interviewer once asked Freddie “what is your favorite instrument to play?” And he replied: “The crowd, baby”. Classic.
One of the BEST if not THE BEST live performances ever ❤️❤️ It’ll never get old, it spans decades and generations and you’d be hard pressed to find a single person who wouldn’t enjoy it. Magic!
I was there on the day and Queen stole the show, considering who else shared the stage that day nobody came close. An epic performance and masterclass in showmanship. Freddie will never be beaten.
Question, I've always wondered this, were you able to watch the performances from the Philly concert between sets in Wimbley? That's how I thought it was worked but was never 100% sure. I heard that the people in Philly watched Queen (and reacted to it like the people in England did), but haven't heard if they watched all the sets from Wembley.
Tickets for the entire day were £25 ! Press paid £100. Audience were 72,000. Tickets were sold out before Queen were put on the playlist. Makes audience participation even more mind blowing
Freddie Mercury was THE God Of Rock. Unrivaled voice and unrivaled master of the stage. This performance of 'Radio Ga Ga' is basically the only time you can actually SEE the speed of sound. This crowd was unfathomably massive, stretching essentially across the entire horizon, and as the crowd claps along with Freddie's singing you can SEE the wave ripple through the crowd as the song reaches the different parts of the crowd.
Freddie hadn't even been diagnosed as HIV+ yet at this time. That he knew he was sick is what was said in the Bohemian Rhapsody movie but that was done for the sake of keeping the movie going and creating empathy for the audience. The movie is cramming 20 years into 2 hours so the time line really suffered in the movie. It was not a documentary so things like timeline really weren't all that important. Great concert, Freddie had the audience eating out of his hand from the very start. Live Aid was aid for famine in Ethiopia. Queen never split off until Freddie died. They did take a little time off because they were burnt out from constantly touring and producing albums year after year with no time off. The band had actually done some touring earlier in this same year so they were not broken up. Queen songs you probably haven't heard that are great I would suggest March Of The Black Queen (studio version), White Queen, live at Odeon, Hammersmith 1975, You Take My Breath Away live at Hyde Park, Somebody To Love live at Montreal 1981 and Innuendo (studio version) for starters. There is so much great Queen music. There are over 200 songs in the Queen catalog and then there are all the live performances so buckle up! Thank you for your reaction.
HIV wasn’t well-known at the time of Live Aid - my oldest brother died of it around 18 months after this, and it was only at that time that the UK government was doing a public information campaign about this, the “iceberg” tv ad, the “AIDS - Don’t Die of Ignorance” leaflet delivered to every house in the country, etc.
March of the Black Queen is my favourite Queen song ❤ and it's kind of a precursor to Bohemian Rhapsody. A few others to check out, Prophet's Song, Death on Two Legs (about their first manager) and I'm In Love With My Car (mainly because it lets you see Roger Taylor in a different light 😛)
This is history now. Comprehend this. This was a live performance. We knew nothing about his diagnosis. NO DIGITAL BOLLOCKS. PURE TALENT. PURE CLASS. POIGNANT TO THOSE THAT WERE THERE. FOREVER. MAGIC!!!!!!!!! GONE, BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN.
Its amazing an almost 40 year old performance songs, stage presence etc still captures people...Freddy was the ultimate performer, and a voice for the ages.
I saw Queen live in Hyde Park at your age 24. I lived in a flat share in Ennismore Gardens and my local pub was the George IVth in Montpelier Square. I was going there one evening after work when a black cab drew up outside John Reid's house (manager of Queen and Elton John at the time) and out leapt Freddie Mercury!
If you want to know more about Live Aid, watch the Africa Lives BBC 2 part documentary on you tube. 1st part looks at why the concert was put together and the 2nd part is the concert itself. Very, very interesting watch. I was 10 at the time of Live Aid and it’s still the best day of music I can recall. It was a one of a kind and will never be repeated. Queen were the outstanding! Always were. Really glad you got round to this vid.
Yes, the impact of this at the time was far greater than most people today can imagine. So many live concerts going on in so many countries & being broadcast globally. If I guessed 3/4 of the population of humanity on the planet was watching. I might be exaggerating. But if I'm off, it wouldn't be by much. & It's just as likely that I'm under counting as it is that I'm over counting. Truly, this was a global event. & Very important to music & history.
Freddie was an amazing musician, singer and performer who could engage with his audience like no other. OMG my wife is the most fanatical Queen freak. She can quote you any facts about any member of the band. Don't get her started!
So emotional to watch now, but still love this performance!! In Radio Gaga, I always lose it because I like to believe this was one of Freddie's finest hours❤

@@mightyV444oh, I 100% agree with you
He didn’t just command the stage. He commanded the audience.
Dude, Freddie is regarded as the absolute #1 vocalist as judged by many
And the greatest frontman by miles. Absolutely magical being
As I recall, this is when Queen’s popularity had dropped off a little bit.
Freddie NEVER took 2 mins to have an audience in his hands he didn't need that amount of time it was done in seconds. RIP Freddie, a true legend❤❤❤
Freddie (and Queen) were used to playing HUGE venues. They had just come off a world tour where they played in front of 115,000 people in South America. He knew he had to make huge, exaggerated gestures so everyone could see him.
Freddie was and always will be the greatest Frontman of all time!
I am 75 years old. I cannot express enough how it delights me “rediscovering” this music with you. I appreciate your openness and endless passion. Keep it up! “Gramma hugs” from far away! ☺️☺️🫶🏽❤️
Freddie was the ultimate showman
Mesmerising - you just had to watch him.
I agree. The GOAT of frontmen! ❤
I saw Queen live in 1977 in Atlanta and Freddie was a magical creature like none other. Grateful I got to be in his presence for one night. 😁✌️
Watch how Freddie "plays the crowd", they're eating out the palm of his hand! Fantastic performance.
Queen. Somebody to love. Live in montreal 1981. Just do it bruv!
"Barcelona" duet...just for the sheer stage presence. Freddie struts out with his arms wide, his entire torso open to the audience, owning every inch of the stage like he always does. Unbelievable. A master. Will adore Freddie forever.
The greatest set in rock history no one can match this.
R.I.P FREDDIE WE MISS YOU
This was on worldwide and I remember watching in the US.
Just Queen's best, owned the day. This event was a huge fund raising.
Don’t question why a piece of music makes you emotional, ride it.
Music is meant to be evocative, to make us feel. It’s a blessing to find something that does that. That we connect to that deeply
I cry at some point during every live performance I’ve ever seen
Spot on! 👍
And someone, Phil Collins, played at both - thanks to the incredible Concorde.
Nobody did it like Freddie! The most Unique Frontman in Rock history!! I love ❤️ Queen!! My regret was not going to see them! RIP Freddie 🙏 may you be pain free & rest. ❤❤️〽️
I was conceived at a Queen concert. A fact my father was oddly proud of 😅
@@mariannetuite7411That's beautiful 😍 ❤
Conceived to Freddie, named after Mick Jagger’s girlfriend.. my fate was sealed 🤘🏻
Not my favorite Singer but I agree, he was/is the GOAT 🫶🏻
@@mariannetuite7411😂😅
1981 Montreal live performance Someone To Love will blow you away!! No autotune, no earplugs. Just pure talent
You have a unique ability to just let these songs in.
Having such an open and curious mind combined with the ability to think critically about what you're seeing and hearing is quite a gift!
For me, it's what makes your channel so compelling.
Two more great Queen live performances:
Somebody to Love
and
Save Me
both live from Montreal 1981
And a third, since you enjoy massive audience participation
Love Of My Life [Rock In Rio '85]
☝️ this is a good recommendation
Love of My Life shows that Freddie does not always have to be his big. bombastic self. He just sits down and lets his voice carry one of the most beautiful songs he wrote, and Brian May's accompaniment brings me to tears every damn time. From one side of the spectrum to the other, pure brilliance....just another part of Queen's mastery.
Save Me is heartbreaking..
He was unbeatable and backed up by Brian May on lead guitar... magic!
These are the days of our lives!!!!!! That will give you watery eyes bro
Hard to watch, but lovely.
Very beautiful song..poignant..bless you Freddie, still loved
Brilliant song . Guaranteed tears listening to it . Seeing how ill Freddie was heartbreaking. ❤
Don't watch yet. Get to know the rest of the catalog first, better appreciation for it later. It is a tough watch though.
That and only the good die young
The only performer I've shed a tear for.
RIP Freddie! The world was blessed to have him here!
Freddy Mercury was one of a kind performer. Nobody will ever come close to being as great of a performer like Freddy Mercury. He was a showman. R.I.P Freddy Mercury.
Hands down the best performance ever!!! Queen and Freddie gave it everything they had that day, in 20+ mins😂 Freddie is still the goat
The greatest 20 minutes of live music you'll ever hear. Nobody could command a crowd like Freddie. He is unmatched and will never be bettered. The greatest performance of all time from the greatest band of all time
Greatest frontman ever!
FREDDIE MERCURY is the GREATEST Live performer of all time!!
Brian May is one of the top Guitarist of all time also!!!
often forgotten but Live Aid itself was also the first ever multi-cast event. played simultaneously on TV and radio
Queen and Freddie Mercury are one of a kind . RIP FREDDIE ❤️❤️❤️
Queen Somebody To Love Live in Canada
Watched this Live as it happened, yes I am that old. Queen just wandered on and stole the show with an astounding performance.
You should check out "somebody to love" live in Montreal!
No, you get it. This is a once in a lifetime performance from a once in a lifetime performer (and band). Fairly well acknowledged as the set of the entire Live Aid and arguably the best videotaped live rock performance in history.
Freddie wasn't just a singer...he was an entertainer
I’m probably going to butcher this but an interviewer once asked Freddie “what is your favorite instrument to play?” And he replied:
“The crowd, baby”. Classic.
He was the greatest showman ever. Saw Queen in Wembley 1986.......❤
Ahhh Freddie...we have no words. Incomparable performance.😢
One of the BEST if not THE BEST live performances ever ❤️❤️
It’ll never get old, it spans decades and generations and you’d be hard pressed to find a single person who wouldn’t enjoy it.
The smile on your face says it all !! Freddie was so talented no one like him 😢 🤧
❤there will never be a band greater than Queen ❤
Simply Freddie was the greatest musical performer ever.
The donation were off the charts during this performance.
This is history now.
Comprehend this.
This was a live performance.
We knew nothing about his diagnosis.
NO DIGITAL BOLLOCKS.
PURE TALENT.
PURE CLASS.
POIGNANT TO THOSE THAT WERE THERE.
FOREVER.
MAGIC!!!!!!!!!
GONE, BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN.
Queen live from Wembley 🎼🎸🎤 In the lap of the gods, One vison, It’s a kind of magic…. 🤘🏻
Freddie had the most amazing voice, such a range....and this 4 artists had so much creativity.....no one can compare
Its amazing an almost 40 year old performance songs, stage presence etc still captures people...Freddy was the ultimate performer, and a voice for the ages.
Freddie had a really bad sore throat when he gave this amazing performance before the entire worlds.
You have to listen to more live performances of Queen. They're the best!!!!
In Radio Gaga, I always lose it because I like to believe this was one of Freddie's finest hours❤
freddie was the greatest singer performer ever
