Arrival is honestly one of the best sci-fi pieces ever made. Feels like our generations answer to 2001, beautiful film, incredibly profound insight into the human experience.

What a great interview. Unexpectedly this turned into one of the most thoughtful discussions of SF in cinema I've heard. Thanks for taking your listeners seriously. The same goes for Arrival, which is great technically and artistically but also treats its audience like thinking beings, showing that it's possible to make gripping, moving SF films without talking down to the audience.

I usually see people trash talking about Ti and her opinions and picky taste BUT THEN she mentions at 9:30 a movie, which none of the guys even heard about, and impresses the guest with her points of view.
So it takes a good writer to appreciate Ti's opinions, it talks loud about her level of discussion.

  • @jonforbing9998

One of the things I find interesting (since they were discussing things like what makes sci-fi, or syntactics versus semantics) is the similarities between fantasy and sci-fi. There's obvious ones (nerds tend to like both, both involve reality mixed with the unreal, etc.), but one of the odder things in common is that they both have a binary sorting system. Science fiction has "hard sci-fi" and "soft sci-fi", fantasy has (simply) "fantasy" and "high fantasy". They're definitely two sides of the same coin, to the point that bookstores and places that sell DVDs/Blu-rays will often just have one "Fantasy/Sci-fi" section.
Also, I just realized that I just went on a nerd rant, and it's possible no one finds this interesting except me.

    • @rakeshraja5198
      @rakeshraja5198 7 років тому +6

I think the blandness of the characters added to the realism. It felt like something that would happen to ordinary people that are a part of that world. If Joaquin Phoenix's character wasn't relatable like he was, the film wouldn't have been as emotional.

    • @thisrocks

The best is undoubtedly 2001. Its an enigma of a film, and it's filmmaking is impressive at the very least. The best recent sci-fi film is Don Hertzfeldt's animated short World of Tomorrow, which is on netflix. Its 17 minutes, and more people need to be seeing and talking about it because it has more great sci-fi in its 17 minutes than the entire past 5 years of Hollywood million-dollar blockbusters. Other excellent sci-fi films include Her, ET, Close Encounters, Alien, The World's End, Eternal Sunshine, and The Iron Giant, just to name a few.

      Obey Banksy
I liked Ex Machina, albeit not as much as most. The cinematography in particular I thought was exceptional but I felt like it lost its way a bit towards the end. That's just my personal opinion though.
There are also sci-fi movies I hear are brilliant that I've yet to see, namely Solaris, Blade Runner and Under the Skin, so nothing against those for me not mentioning them, I just haven't gotten to them yet!

Really found this roundtable interesting. Is their any chance you could do a video on genre theory about sci-fi in a similar fashion to the theory of humour video you did during the week.
It sounds like an idea that would work better with examples that we can see. Especially since a lot of the movies you mentioned in the roundtable aren't exactly mainstream.
Would also love to see T review some of the independent movies she's seen lately.

Interesting round-table, but I would have liked a discussion of some more specific titles. I prefer more "cerebral" sci-fi, as came up in the discussion. I would include Blade Runner, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Day the Earth Stood Still (the original 1951 version), Moon, Ex Machina, Brazil (more dystopian than "real" sci-fi), and Planet of the Apes (the original 1968 version).

I loved that Stalker was talked about when they were highlighting Sci-fi movs without clear sci-fi tropes. But i think they missed a trick here. After all, the very first Sci-Fi story ever written in the english language is probably Frankenstien's Monster by Mary Shelley, that would make an even better example

Other movies I've missed this year: The Lobster, Green Room, Hell or High Water, Loving, and Moonlight. Not to worry though: Both Madea and Almost Christmas are playing on more than one screen, so yeah!!!

Sci fi is my favorite genre BECAUSE it's cerebral, it's inherently philosophical. It should challenge you, your perspective, your knowledge and also introduce how technology or advancements interplay with current human existence. I also do love science, in general. It's fun for me to explore tech and physics.
Note: I enjoyed Billy Jackson's perspective on this roundtable, I wish he was on more.

    2001 A Space Odyssey
    Akira
Automata (maybe, but maybe it was kinda dry)
    Blade Runner
    Children of Men
    Close Encounters
    Cloud Atlas
    District 9
    Dredd
    Event Horizon
Fire in the Sky (for that abduction scene alone)
    Ghost in the Shell
    Her
    Johnny Mnemonic!
    Metropolis (grand daddy of sci-fi)
    Monsters (monster sci-fi movie)
    Evangelion
    Pandorum (special mention)
    Perfect Sense
Transcendence (as much as I hate its cliche approach to the subject)
    12 Monkeys
Under the Skin (but it tends to be more of a horror art-house flick)
Videodrome (for a more hardcore sci-fi)
    and Aeon Flux (the series)

I loved "Arrival"! It reminded me of the (vastly?) under-rated "Contact" & the rightly celebrated "CE3K" with elements of "The Day the Earth Stood Still" & "Interstellar" freshly mixed into it.. It even had a terrifically intense dash of (the non sci-fi) "The China Syndrome" towards the end.

Come on, what are you talking about? Although not at much length, they properly explain how the machine works in Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind!! They identify the brain cells which are related to spesific memories by triggering activity on those cells with visual stimulation, compose a map of them, then kill all those cells while the subject is asleep with a laser or something. That's the process! I think that's enough and much better explanation than many other stuff in other sci-fi movies.

    • @educostanzo

I think the point they were making is that the question of "how it works" it's not central to the story, in comparison with say, Interstellar or Inception, where this is practically what the film is all about, or at least absolutely fundamental to understand the story.
