    SPOILERS: I think one big part that people temd to have missed out from the ending is that the Chinese general (in the future) has also learned to experience time the same way she does. Therefore he already knows what she told him in the past and that what she told him was from his future self. He's closing the loop as they are both living the same two moments at the same "time".

      I'm pretty sure when the Chinese general gives his number to her, he doesn't know why it is important, but was told it was, so he did it. (Just making sure you know this). Could be wrong, Wikipedia isn't always right.

      A part that you seem to have missed is the general telling her that he doesn't understand how her brain works. From that I assumed that he didn't posses the same ability, even though it was my first thought also at the beginning of that scene.

      I found it rather silly and plodding to be honest, and the 'twist ending' struck me as totally unearned and lame. It steps all over its own toes a lot too; like how the movie makes it absolutely clear early on in its run that these creatures DO NOT communicate through sound, but then in the end her understanding of their VISUAL language allows them to suddenly understand spoken English, and have a goofily subtitled verbal conversation?! They made NO EFFORT to teach the aliens verbal English, and they obviously didn't know it in the beginning.
      And the 'big twist ending' wholly depended on the main character both A.) same-facing her way through every 'future-dream' so the audience is given absolutely no hint whatsoever that these are completely foreign images/scenarios and not an old memory, and B.) completely failing to mention to anyone at all that, during her first-contact experience with friggen aliens from another world, that strange images/memories are finding their way into her brain... something you'd think you'd MAAYYYBEEE wanna mention to your team, as the head of scientific examination of an alien species with strange powers.
      And barring all that, the protagonist fast-forwarding into the future to guarantee a happy ending before the movie is even over is not my idea of a cool twist, it's my idea of an insanely anticlimactic finish.

    The jist I got from the movie is that everything is in fact predetermined from our perspective of a linear time line, but those predetermined events are shaped by the people who make them happen.

    • @alexismason419
      @alexismason419 7 років тому +2

      Michael Burch I'm not sure of I completely agree with that. in the movie she saw the love that she would have for both her husband and daughter even though she would lose them both. I think she thought that she wanted to experience those moments in actuality. Therefore, she didn't interfere with her timeline.
      The movie doesn't really divulge into the whole "no matter how you choose to go about this situation you'll still end up here."

    • @evilinterpol
      @evilinterpol 7 років тому

      Michael Burch yeah the movie had a lot to say. Life being predetermined is reality but her character emphasized that this would not interfere with her enjoying every second of it. Basically the higher point is that life happens and may sometimes be a bitch but you shouldn't let that stop you from enjoying it. Knowing what will happen should not diminish our journey and experience. We all know we will all one day die and we know our loved ones will too but that shouldn't stop us from loving them

    It makes perfect sense that the aliens wouldn't comprehend algebra or any of our mathematics because they do not experience time in a linear fashion, and all of our math is procedural, step by step processes. They would just see a jumble of numbers and symbols all at once, not a series of instructions.

    • @archmad
      @archmad 7 років тому +4

      At least they communicate in physics, because that's like very obvious. Atoms, particles, gravity, elements, and even stars and galaxies. These are primary in understanding of reality and it's universal, at least to our universe. Might be different symbols and solutions as our math but atoms will always be atoms.

    • @ricosuabeh
      @ricosuabeh 7 років тому +2

      If there is anything true in this world/universe or entirety of creation, that is math, although we cannot comprehend dimensions beyond the third dimension, we can only think about it

    • @mbpoblet
      @mbpoblet 7 років тому +2

      Chiccian Montano That's not how mathematics work, though. A prime number will be a prime number, regardless of how you write it. Same with constants like e or π. Maths are the true universal language, and what we'd realistically use as a rosetta stone (plus, as _archmad_ said, physical values like the charge of the electron and whatnot) if we ever had to learn to communicate with intelligent aliens.

    • @mbpoblet
      @mbpoblet 7 років тому +2

      Rico de guzman _Eh_, I know _I_ can't visualise higher dimensional spaces, but professional mathematicians seem to enjoy figuring out ways to pack spheres in n dimensions and whatnot, so I'm sure at least a few of them have managed to twist their brains around visualising them...

  • @Subparanon

    Language and especially writing, absolutely re-wire the brain. I'll give you an example, Mandarin and Cantonese spoken language as well as the Chinese writing system both require different parts of the brain than just the speech centers. The spoken language uses tones to change the meaning of the words and people that speak and understand it are more sensitive to pitch and therefor music. And reading and writing in Chinese deals with characters which represent ideas, not sounds. So a single character can not only express an entire thought all by itself, but the context in which its used can also change it's meaning. So contrast that with an English speaker that uses tones to convey emotion and subtext instead of meaning, and a written alphabet that represents sounds instead of ideas. Granted, when you string those letters into words, the meaning comes out but a word is a word, and open to a different interpretation than an idea. That isn't to say that other languages like English don't have their own sub-text and hidden meanings conveyed by phrasing and word choices, but they are not done in the same way. For instance you can say "He fell off the bike" and that doesn't imply blame anywhere, and you can also say "He accidentally fell off the bike" and that implies it was the persons fault for falling. A subtle distinction. They both say essentially the same thing, but one implies blame or fault and there are many other kinds of subtext in phrasing that can make simple statements emotionally charged. In fact as a native English speaker it can be difficult to say anything using neutral language because you can express something simply the way it is, but your subconscious choice of words and phrasing make it difficult to hide your opinion about the things which you are discussing.

Game of Thrones gives us a GREAT example of this with danaerys. when she speaks dothraki, she's rough, hostile and itching for a fight. when she speaks valyrian, she's more aristocratic. when she speaks common/English, it depends on who she's talking with, but she keeps the headspace of her audience.

    Great interview. I think your guest got a couple of things wrong tho'. They DID understand prime numbers. In fact it was portrayed exactly as he suggested it should be; namely, the mutual understanding of prime numbers didn't get them very far (as in the short term it would't). And they said it appeared that the aliens didn't understand the algebra, not that they definitely did not, and it was duly noted that that seemed very strange. It was a puzzle they didn't get the chance to examine.

    In the Predestination Paradox, thee is only ONE timeline. Your necklace of pearls is already made. We have three illusion of free will but ultimately what will happen, WILL HAPPEN. The beauty of this movie is she unlocks the equation that keeps us bound to the present, so her consciousness can move to different times of her life, allowing her to get information she needed then that she would only learn years later, and slowing her to be reminded of things that hadn't happened yet. The Predestination Theory gets rid of alternate timeline theories, but this movie does introduce a new kind of paradox, called the Bootstrap Paradox. Basically if she sent her consciousness forward in time to learn what she said to the guy, she hadn't said it until he reminded her of it, years later, so where did he original information come from? Idk I just thought I'd put out some info I knew on the subject... love this movie, one of the best of the year! :)

      Well 1. They usually just talk about the comic book - cash grab sequel movies because those are 90% of the popular movies nowadays, and 2. They watch a lot of smaller films, you can tell the people there have lots of knowledge about less well known films by little comments in movie fights.

    does the doctor's theory about time being a string of pearls that can get all tangled in places explain deja vu? If you forsee an event from the future, and you later find it to be true, does that mean that that moment, and the moment that you first forsaw it, overlapped?

    Why would the aliens being able to change gravity be so unbelievable? We manipulate electromagnetism well, and the strong force to an extent, it is pretty logical to believe an alien race more advanced than us might have learned to manipulate gravity.
    He has a point on the math part and ian though
    His talk about time was good too
    And he has a point about the language part
    Still an amazing movie.

    • @captnmaico6776
      @captnmaico6776 7 років тому +2

      he just mentioned it , its simply mass. electromagnetic forces are very, very very strong! gravity is very very weak. It might be possible for alien species to manipulate gravity, but they cant break the fact, taht you need alot of mass. For example they could use black holes for something advanced or planets etc, but manipulating gravity on the micro level without mass is simply impossible.

    • @guitarnoob4568
      @guitarnoob4568 7 років тому +3

      Fayt because gravity is simple, the greater the mass you have, the stronger your gravity will be. That spaceship simply couldn't weigh more than the planet earth, if it does, by showing up in the solar system, it could probably derail the planets from their original orbits.

    • @VperVendetta1992
      @VperVendetta1992 7 років тому +1

      Well, not if sometime in the future we discover that gravity is in fact transferred around by gravitons.
      Then we would only need to change the pathways of gravitons so that they transfer gravity in other directions, just like we do with electrons.

      Gotcha. That makes sense.
      Is there nothing we know of that could get around that, hypothetically? No way to produce artificial gravity without having loads of mass?

    this movie was great until they revealed that by thinking differently you can apparently destroy the concept of linear time / cause and effect. you'd think she would at least use her paradoxical superpower for something good like using her newly formed Chinese friendship to use CRISPR on her eggs to edit out that genetic disease. and if that couldn't be done, she could have at least not condemned a teenage girl to death and ruined that guy's life in a way that he didn't consent to.

    • @Daniel_Robinson
      @Daniel_Robinson 7 років тому +3

      The point of the movie was that even though she knew that if she had a daughter the daughter would die young, it was still better than never having a daughter at all.
      Basically it's better to have good stuff with some bad consequences than nothing at all.
      I didn't make this up, I got this of Wikipedia lol so I'm not gonna debate philosophy.
      Also, maybe she did use her superpower for something good, but it wouldn't fit with the rest of the movie.
      Also, when did it say his life was ruined? I may have missed it.
      Lastly, "destroy the concept of linear time" probably isn't the best was to put what happened, because although technically correct, it's more of adding "tangled" time.

    • @Daniel_Robinson
      @Daniel_Robinson 7 років тому

      And about the "thinking different changes linear time", thing, the scientist in this video explained how it's not crazy. Maybe you should rewatch that part. it's like how I can say "If you heat a rocket to 78 degrees it will be fine", which I'm very confident is true, even though I don't know much at all about rockets.

      She should have consulted with him but tbh he didn't see what she did. In the end she felt just knowing her daughter was worth it, it's a very difficult decision. And the "condemning a teenage girl to death" thing is perspective. Would you rather live an amazing life for a short time or just never exist? Animals don't live very long but does that mean they are simply better off not existing in the first place?

    Guys, read the original short story. The movie diluted tons of science/linguistics from the original story and added military/world invasion plotline. The story explained why their writing is circular, their concept of time, the idea of destiny, etc. Along with that, in the original story, the physicists exchange some mathematical details with the aliens too.

    Actually, he's incorrect on one point. We DON'T know if math is universal. Aliens will surely have math, but we have no idea if OUR FORM of mathematics is the only way to construct such a system.

    • @duckonmyquack
      @duckonmyquack 7 років тому +8

      I think his point is that mathematics is considered by some the purest science. In our universe 1+1 always will be 2. xkcd.com/435/

    • @IgnisDomini97
      @IgnisDomini97 7 років тому +1

      duckonmyquack But WE DON'T ACTUALLY KNOW IF THAT'S ACTUALLY TRUE is my point. It's a very romantic idea, but there's no actual evidence that our way of doing math is the one, true way of doing math.

    • @williamking2782
      @williamking2782 7 років тому

      Well, along the same lines that we don't "actually know" that dinosaurs walked the earth, or that how old the universe is, or that older things are buried deeper in the dirt than newer things. We find evidence that these things are true and through repeated testing find that they have been consistently constant. There is no reason based on what we have found in the universe to assume the derivative of 2x on Mars or next to Alpha Centari will be anything but 2. Math is considered pure because we have no reason to believe that it has or ever will change. Physics has to deal with changing variables, math does not. If you're looking for God's language, it's math. Yes, that's romantic, but we have never seen an indication that it isn't true.

    • @IgnisDomini97
      @IgnisDomini97 7 років тому +1

      William King No, there is LITERALLY NO EVIDENCE that this is the case.

    • @williamking2782
      @williamking2782 7 років тому

      I'm curious if I'm misunderstanding you. What do you mean when you talk about "our form of mathematics" vs. Alien math?
      What I mean is that numbers are entirely theoretical as it is. There is not a 1 held in a vault that defines what 1 is (which is the way measurements work). 1 is an idea of an amount (1 meter, 1 apple, 1 day off work) and that amount correlates to other amounts. Math boils down to "how many apples do you have if I give you 2 apples" the answer being 1+2=3. An alien civilization might write that differently, but they have to have an understanding of what an amount is. Especially in the case of this video where he means that no alien civilization could build a spaceship without an understanding of 1+x=2, x=1.
