Denis Villeneuve is a French Canadian film director and screenwriter. He is best known for his feature films DUNE (2021), Blade Runner 2049 (2017), Arrival (2016), Sicario (2015), Prisoners (2013), Enemy (2013), and Incendies (2010). For his work on Arrival, he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Director.
1. Surround yourself with people who love cinema, not people who love themselves.
2. Science fiction is a tool that allows you to take the relevant human journey and put it into context where you’re more free to express yourself about more abrasive subjects.
3. When adapting material from somewhere, find an equilibrium between giving out exposition for people who know the material and ones who are coming into it with no previous knowledge.
4. Create real sets to get realistic performances from your actors.
5. Make your movie for your past and future self.
6. Great work will attract great artists to want to work on your projects.
7. Cinema is a lot about planning. The more you plan, the more you can improvise.
8. Create tension with realism.
9. In your early career, aim for your films to be noticed by other filmmakers, producers or agencies, not necessarily wider audiences.
10. Keep your integrity by protecting your identity.

I read in Backstory : Villeneuve and Spahts worked 12 hour days on Dune drafts in Montreal and Budapest for several weeks. They had some help from initial drafts by Eric Roth, and tonnes of love for the books
- - then it was doing the hellacious work needed to create the adapted screenplay.

These aren't tips. Tips are methods. These are, in most cases, beyond your control. Itd be nice to surround yourself with people who love the art but sadly you can't control that, especially if you're new to writing and directing.
There's still some tips in there.

DUNE is an excellent adaptation, because it’s only the bare minimum needed to tell the story.

“Stay intact”
I wouldn't want writing tips from him for Dune. For the most part that was a shoddy writing job. It's only half the book yet he absolutely massacres that one half. What the fuck did he do to the baron? The guy barely speaks? What did he do to Piter De Vries? Why is there no banquet scene when you've got 2 movies to tell this story! For me this movie was just pretty visuals. If you haven't read the book I doubt any of it would be comprehensible
@ksan3 I don't give a fuck who disagrees with me. The baron was a far better character in the book. How was he menacing in this - LMAO what? Because he had about 5 lines of dialogue? That makes him menacing? He was just a big fat, boring character who didn't talk. "Twisted Mentat" Piter De Vries is neither depicted as twisted or even named onscreen. The atredies arrival on arrakis is rushed to fuck and the movie cuts out all the moves they made when they arrived to counter the emperor and the baron. They just arrive and the attack happens like 10 minutes later. Yui is such a pointless character in this that his betrayal will mean nothing to the average viewer they may not even remember who the guy is because he appears for about 10 seconds then his next scene he kills Leto. I could go on. I love Villenueve as a director and as a visual director he's incredible but the writer on this, Frank Speights I think it was, is not someone to take writing lessons from. This was not a well adapted first half of the book

It also show how you didn't actually WATCH the movie. You just looked at it.
