  • Surf fishing in Oregon. It's been a while since I caught any redtail surf perch. I used several baits like Gulp Sandworms, and Gulp pinched nightcrawlers. But the best bait for catching surf perch are clam necks.

    PK, Gulp has some great 2" pinched crawlers that are in a ziploc bag that work great when the bite is slow.

    great day of fishing. thanks for the video. was wondering about the spider thread, seems to have helped. I was wondering if larger hook size would reduce chance of fish getting off. what do you think?

      In case you guys still aren't having luck just remember the basics. Go an hour or two before and after high tide and move up and down the beach if you aren't gettin any bites to find where they're at. My best luck has always been with gulp camos.

    Hey PK!! I’m new to surf fishing and I was wondering about the type of rod and reel you use? I’ve seen another video of yours talking about the setup, but wont the Light rod prevent you from casting far? I was thinking about this combo I saw at Dicks, Penn Fierce III, and it’s a Medium heavy rod with a 6000 reel… do you think that setup would be ideal for surf perch fishing as well? I live at the west coast too-Pismo Beach, CA. Thanks!!!

    • @grant0410
      @grant0410 2 роки тому +2

      I use an old 8 1/2 foot rod I found in my grandpas garage with a old 3000 size reel. Really the only thing that’s important is that you have a soft tip and a good amount of backbone. Also braided line to help with sensitivity. A 6000 size reel is gonna give you a sore arm after a hour or so. Almost any rod meant for salmon fishing will work great.

    • @williamharbour3378
      @williamharbour3378 2 роки тому +1

      @@grant0410 interesting! So I’ll definitely look for a smaller reel. What is your rod strength?

    • @oregonlife
      @oregonlife  2 роки тому +3

      The Okuma 9'6" will toss a 2 oz weight quite far. It's the rod I use besides my Tourney Trail. A 6000 reel is a little too big, for me. I use a Shimano 4000 size reel which works fine spooled with 20# braid. You can even use a 3000. And I don't use over a 2 oz weight. The Okuma 9'6" salmon rod paired with a size 3000/4000 Shimano Sedona is one of the best setup for surf fishing for redtails.

      @@oregonlife Thank you so much for the info!! It really cleared up a lot of my concerns and gave me much more confidence in buying the right setup! But also if you have the time I have one more inquiry… I’ve watched all of your videos about the different kind of lures and setups you use to fish for surf perch, (and Berkeley Sandworm on the Hi-Lo rig seems to be the hands-down winner lol) and with these lures require the typical repetitive action of casting it out and reeling it in, while carefully working the bait… So my question is: is there any baits/lures I can use for a setup where I can just cast it, let it sit, and set my rod down in a holder and simply just wait for a bite? Ive heard some refer to this method as like the “Bait and Wait” type of fishing. But if there is a way to do this, what’s the baits and is the setup different? Thanks!

    When you use the spider wire or spider line, we see you tie it, but don't see how you tie it off. How do you tie it off?

    • @oregonlife
      @oregonlife  2 роки тому +1

      You don't, you wrap the spider thread over and over, I do it about 10 times, and then just snap off. it won't come undone.

    How long can you wait to gut Surf Perch?
    I live 2hrs away from the coast. Can just slit the throat to bleed it out in the cooler, then filet it when I get home without gutting?

    • @oregonlife
      @oregonlife  2 роки тому

      2 hours is fine. Most of the time, I whack them and toss them in the cooler to be filleted at home. I recommend ice if you do that.

    Which part of Oregon coast is best for stripers?

    • @timmoore9736
      @timmoore9736 Рік тому

      According to ODFW, the Coos river system has the majority. Fish are in the Coquille and the Umpqua/Smith system. About 3 decades ago I was fishing in Tenmile Lake near Florence, and there were a number of boats anchored in an area of the lake fishing for stripers; the ad for the lake does not mention them, but Tenmile feeds into the ocean. Good luck.

    • @oregonlife
      @oregonlife  2 роки тому +2

      Yea, too small. And I think you can't keep salmon from the surf in Oregon. I was using a barbed hook too, where barbless hook is required for ocean salmon.

    • @timmoore9736
      @timmoore9736 Рік тому

      @@oregonlife You can keep salmon from the surf if they are legal size and you have a tag. In the fall, some people in boats will work just out of the surf zone as the fish pool up to enter the bays.
