- Reginald Varney was an English actor, entertainer and comedian. He is best remembered for having played the lead role of bus driver Stan Butler in the LWT sitcom On the Buses and its three spin-off feature films.
Reg Varney had a heart attack in 1965, and in 1981 he suffered a more serious one.[7] He then contracted a severe viral infection, which for three years made working difficult for him. In 1989, he suffered a stroke, which left him with an uneven heartbeat.

Reg was a comedy genius so funny and on the buses will never stop being funny even with most people not snow flakes 😂
Cheers, Colin it's one of the iconic 70s for sure and still brings lots of pleasure
Definitely a comedy genius, but according to a friend of mine, he had a nasty affliction which my friend found out when he was about ten years old.
Reg Varney was by no means a ‘comedic genius.’ He was a general all round entertainer-nothing more. He read lines (and often fluffed them) that were written by other people.
Similarly, ‘On The Buses’ was not a great TV comedy. There was very little choice at the time, with only three channels. As a kid, I loved the show, but as I say, I was a kid.
That is true always will be
Reg Varney was also the first person in the Uk to use a cash point. This was the 27th June 1967 and it was a Barclays Bank in Enfield London.
That is it Rick
100% facts.
Yes correct. The Barclays branch in Enfield Town has the historic event displayed on the exterior of the building and a blue plaque.
@@ivoidwarrantiesuk Enfield. Essex?
I really loved ON THE BUSES R.I.P to all the original cast members especially REG VARNEY(Stan Butler)he lived a long time despite his health problems late in his life.Never get tired of watching those shows.
A certainly did. Colin and he was a really positive guy in real life. I've watched quite a few interviews. Considering is early problems with his heart. He did very well and I love watching the series. I'm going to watch an episode tonight to reminisce on UA-cam. Good night Alan
They don't make them like "On the Buses" any more. Reg was part of the true British golden age of comedy. He brought laughter and smiles to millions and still does to this day. RIP 🎉
Thanks for doing this. RIP Reg, Bob, Stephen, Doris, Michael & Anna xx
It was my pleasure Sharon. Nice to meet you
Loved On the Bus'es , & i still do . Thank you for a very moving tribute to a great team of actors ....
Thank you Kevin. I think collectively there did a good job for the time. It certainly brought a great deal of entertainment and still does
Loved Reg Varney on the buses he was hilarious bless him
Loved on the buses very funny along with all the carry on films. Can't beat them.
Reg was amazing actor ,it was lovely that you put a flower down.
He came to our school in 1976, he spoke about road safety and awareness from a drivers point of view. He connected with all of us and although he was a comedy actor he was dead serious when it came to road safety. Lovely bloke.
He did say my nice guy. Just kidding and you had the privilege of seeing him in the flesh. Well done for this interesting comment. Thank you, Alan
Glad to have the box set of on the buses.
On the buses was absolutely brilliant ❤
Brings back many memories of my childhood in the early 70s. Thanks Alan 👍 🙂
Exactly Alan have a good day
Oh On the buses was hilarious. . Reg Varney was brilliant loved his bus driving antics as well xx😊
I actually watched a couple of episodes last night and enjoy them greatly
lovely to se u again on the channel alan ..im 55 and loved on the buses back in the day ..real comedy ..which is sadly missing these days
That's the thing for people of a certain age. It takes us back but even I think some younger people might enjoyed it slap stick of it. Thank you for the great comment. Roger
Reg, a real eastender lived just over the hill to me in West Ham off Star Lane whereas I was on Manor Road. Unfortunately we were separated by West Ham power station and about 50 years!
On The Buses has been slaughtered over the years as sexist, racist and misogynistic but it was one of the most successful and beloved comedy shows of the late sixties early seventies. The three movies (made by Hammer) were the highest grossing films in the UK for the years they were released.
I'm glad to say that with the series being repeated on satellite and cable TV and the movies being shown over the usual rainy bank holiday weekends a whole new generation of viewers are learning about this little diamond of a show.
I love OTB, I have done since I was a kid and I will continue to watch it.
My advice is, if you don't like it, you feel it's smutty, dated, sexist, racist (although no-one has ever been able to give an example of racism in the show) demeaning to women or just rubbish then don't watch it.
There are buttons on your remote that change the channel or even turn it off. Use them, bugger off and let us watch Reg and Co at their best.
Couldn't agree with you more👍👍👍👍
Agree big time, here here
@@paulmartin4971I agree really loved on the buses 👍
@@nettahoban excellent mate still makes me laugh so much no matter how many times you watch it lol 😂 cheers 🥂
🇦🇺 Totally loved On the Buses - decades later when I'm serving up sausages for dinner, I think of that scene in the canteen where Reg is nicking the middles out of the other fella's sausages then pushing the ends together to hide the theft 😂 Genius
I can imagine it. It was a lovely comedy in cartoon time from the characters were exaggerated but true to life. Thank you for the comments. Linden
Thanks Alan, this was bittersweet to watch. On the buses provided so much laughter to me and so many when I was a kid. So very sad to hear of the life tragedy of the cast. Your sharing honoured them beautifully ❤
Hello Elaine, the number of times that when I delved the famous characters have tragedy. Bob was unbelievable on this one. It was so depressive. I watched the little film of him when he was older and he just felt so sad not to have worked much since the program. I think some people just handle the whole thing better than others. Reg seemed very good but thank lovely to see you again. Alan
@@MotorHomeBeepBeep thanks for the lovely reply Alan. Yes, it seems the famous do seem to suffer more life tragedy than us regular folks. Bless them all. Thanks again for what you share, I love watching your videos
I loved Reg and this was a lovely trip down memory lane for me. On the buses was huge back in the day. Thanks for this video Alan, really enjoyed it.
Hello Joan, you can easily put this show down because it is a little bit corner but it has that good feel factor And it's the pleasure to watch it. I've just been reminiscing on an episode. I'm glad you enjoyed my little film. Thank you as always, Alan
Hours of laughter Reg ,and his team bless them all.!

Hello Shirley, the same with me. I started watching them again. It's nice! Nostalgic

Hi Alan trust you are keeping well Reg Varney and his mate Bob Grant were a pair kept Blakey on his toes the pair loved overtime thanks for sharing Alan
Hi Hance I think they both like to do the late night shift. I don't know why :-)
Loved reg and still love to watch on the buses it's still funny now . Don't understand why his name isn't on the plaque. Thanks for sharing Alan love from Holmfirth west Yorkshire 💙💚
Hi Gill yes it did. Make me wonder. I asked a few people why his name wasn't on the stone and most of them said that is ashes were with his wife but one said differently and said at his daughter's house so you never 100% sure. There wasn't a lot of room on the stone but I'm not sure either. Anyway, I actually watch the episode last night and enjoy it 😁
Loved on the buses as a kid watching with my family good days good shows.

I loved on the buses. Great British humour and a brilliant cast. So sad for Bob Grant and also Olive. Remembered with love. Thanks so much for this video and so respectful as all your video’s are. A very nice touch leaving the flower 🌺
BS it's always great to see you! Thank you for the input. Reg are the great career. It is terribly sad for the two that died if only real life could be like on the buses. Regards Alan
Yes loved watching on the busses back in the day and having to wait a week for the next episode
Loved on the buses the old stuff was so much funnier than the garbage today ,to reg and the cast RIP all of you ! .
As usual Alan I really enjoyed this one. I think On The Buses was a timeless comedy and something you can watch time and time again (my husband does anyway!!). Such sadness behind a lot of the cast though, especially Bob who took his own life and the terrible tragedy that beheld Anna. Your wise words are always welcome and always make sense to me. So it's nice to see you back and thank you so much for the videos and the stories behind the famous faces. Regards.
Hello Louise, it kind of just shows you that the people from the silver screen I just the same as you and me we all have to deal with things but I did love the program and it's even watchable now. I've watched three episodes since filming that one. Thank you for the great support. Alan
Another great one Alan loved on the buses comedy at it’s best x

Good one! Arthur and Olive, what a pairing!😂Holiday on the Buses, I remember the toilet blowing up under Arthur Mullard. Bend the wire Alan and put it in the pot! I actually shouted that out loud when you were placing th3 flower!
Hello Ashley, oh my god Arthur Millard what about that singly did with Hilda baker you're the one that I want. Wow!....
Loved in the buses, watching it as a child with my parents. My own children laugh at it too. Thank you for this video.

AMAZING VIDEO AS ALWAYS!!
I'm so pleased. I know what a big fan you are ahah
I loved On the Buses. Such a pity 2 of the cast died so tragically. 🌹 Great video Alan, keep up the good work.👍
I was also very shocked when I heard about Bob. He looks such a jovial character on the program but I have seen interviews where he seems very serious when he was older. What a shame. The fire was just an accident but still sad 😢
Hi Alan thanks for another great video .
You are so right about taking the time to realise what you have because time goes so fast and people we know and care about are gone in a moment .
We should all remember how good we have it even with all the problems life throws at us .
And of course we ourselves are but a brief moment in time !!!
Take care Alan and look after yourself old chum and looking forward to your next instalment
Cheers
Hello Mark yes, time is the most valuable thing we have. Sometimes we just forget that I have made quite a few films and I'll be uploading a couple each week. Thank you for the the encouragement. I want to tell love one tonight but there was no signal in Dover :-) look after yourself. Alan

R.I.P to all of the on the buses cast they will be loved and missed ❤️ 🙏 😢😢
Well done Pal. Absolutely brilliant of u , your time etc etc. God bless u
Nice one for posting this i watch this often
I too like so many loved the On the Buses series. The members of the cast were so very different in their real lives. Great fun and family entertainment with no political agenda, not like so many serials that tried to influence our lives and how we think and speak.. And as far as being poor having it hard or life being tough, I always think that however low one is, or however disabled, there are always so many more that are are worse off. Another great post Alan, found you late in your online exploits, really hoping you will seek out the stories facts and perhaps the resting place if you have not already of one of my very favourite men of my younger days and that is Arthur Mullard of Yus my Dear. I met him once and he really did speak exactly as he did in the series, he was a kind man, very polite and obliging, and selling his flowers from a stall on the pavement outside of a Station in Islington, in his long black coat.
Mr. Chrissy, what a wonderful interesting post! You wouldn't think the Arthur would need to be selling flowers when they've been a successful actor, but maybe just enjoyed interacting with the public. He was a great character and it was nice to hear he was just planning himself. I remember the single with Hilda baker. You're the one that I want. It was hilarious! Thank you every so much for such an interesting comment. Look after yourself my friend. Alan
I've been meaning to visit Regs grave for some time now, but I've not had the chance. I was going to take a little green bus with me that I've got. It's funny to see other buses there. I will really make an effort and go soon. God bless Reg, Anna, Michael, Bob, Stephen, and Doris 🙏❤️ 🚍
I hope you make it soon
Thank you my friend!
Thank you, Johnny cash
Great tribute Alan ..Loved On the Buses ...Reg was a great Actor 💙 so sad to hear about Bob Grant & Anna RIP💔
Hi Debbie really was quite shocking. He was such a contrast to the character on the comedy, but of course that's what they are. Actors poor Bob.
Great to see you Alan, not sure when you recorded this, but great to see you
Loved on the Buses one of the old time greats. Hope you are back with more great videos ❤️
Hi NJP I recorded it about a week ago. I have made about 10 films and I'm touring at the moment. So thank you for the encouragement and it's great to see you again. Alan

I loved On The Buses, especially Holiday on The Buses, some of it was filmed just outside of Rhyi in north wales at the Pontins holiday site, we used to drive past it on our way to Rhyl, i always recognised it, So sad about bob and olive passing like they did, keep up the good work Alan, love Sue x
Hello Sue it's a lovely program to reminisce It's on UA-cam it was tragic for the two people. Real life is not as fun as on the buses but thank you for lovely comment
Thanks for the video,
My pleasure Andrew
On the buses was great.😍
Loved on the buses all the cast where so funny.❤ thank you reg. R.i.p.
Great job Alan, always most respectful my friend, You are of course right regarding everyone having problems.
My late dad used to say "Tomorrow is a pure white field of freshly fallen untrodden snow ready for us to start out on again."
Love your vids Alan.
Could you possibly consider visiting the last resting place of actor & musician Mike Pratt (from Randal & Hopkirk. he was not only an excellent actor, but a well accomplished & published song writer.
That's a great suggestion. Jigger master. I'll look him up. They're showing Randall and hopkirk every night on one of the channels but I didn't know he was a songwriter. If I find this location I'll let you know
