I am working on my 79 Jay series Jeep pickup and I have the same np208. Has the same problem with that pushing that is completely gone that retains the lower shift fork. Where did you get that updated part? Any help would be greatly appreciated I have the Jeep jamboree in ouray Colorado coming up in July and I'm trying to get ready for that.

I did some searching and the one I found was used but this company has been a great parts source for a bunch of T-cases of mine. Transfer Case King 800-822-1436

Hi, so do not use the blue or the black silicon gasket maker, then what is the grey stuff you are using? My 1987 Chev NP208 works great at 225000 miles but being in Sonoran Desert, I went to synthetic fluid for better heat tolerance and then the case started leaking. Guess the original sealant not compatible. Great video. Thank you so much for your efforts.

I used Rightstuff, 90 minute tube version. I have never had it leak but sometimes it is hard to find and is expensive. Lately I have been using the automatic transmission version of RTV works just as good, is easier to find and costs way less. It also holds up to heat great.

@@murphysgarage Thanks! I'll look for it. Permatex makes a gear oil/transmission RTV I was going to try=$11/3oz but will go for yours.

Do you know what is an acceptable radial play on the front output shaft? Mine moves about 0,25 mm (0,01"), with light hand pressure, measured from the output flange. It seems excessive, but I cant find any specs, and it does not feel rough or leak.

I don't know if my answer will do you any good or not. I usually have no side to side or radial play on the input or output shaft. That being said, you may have some play on the splines of the yoke. Once you have enough to cause a seal to leak or a vibration, you probably have a worn yoke. If you have detectable play in the side-to-side direction of the tail shaft without the yoke, you may want to check the bearings and bearing landings/bushings on the shaft and housing. As far as having any specs on the shaft radial play, none of my sheets show any tolerances of this measurement.

@@murphysgarage Thanks! Maybe I will take the yoke off and see if the play is in the splines or the shaft.

I see the detent and pad on the shifter worn is most common, makes it so it is not completely engaged in the gear.

I also have seen installers mount the shifter backwards and causes some issues with distance and interference.
