  • This is the GM version of the NP 208 transfer case out of an '86 Chevy K5 Blazer, actually M1009. Hope this is helpful to anyone doing their project.
    Blind bearing puller:
Orion Motor Tech Blind Hole Collet Bearing Race and Seal Puller Extractor Kit, Slide Hammer Pilot Insert Inner Bearing Removal Tool Set, 16 Pieces

    NP 208 Rebuild Kit:
Timken TCRK208SPK Transfer Case Rebuild Kit
    a.co/d/dO1LQcU
Rear output shaft seal in tail housing did not come with the rebuild kit but was in stock at my local NAPA auto parts store. Apologies but I do not have the part number- they were able to look it up no problem so I'm hoping and assuming your local auto parts store will too.

Glad I found this video my buddy was driving my 87 jimmy last night and dropped the driveshaft. Now my transfer case is leaking so I get to have some fun tonight after work. I’m not in any way a mechanic and I didn’t even have the fun of breaking it 😂

Thanks for the video! I have an NP208C in an 84 square body I need to re-seal. This makes me think I won’t mess it up too bad haha

This is a really awesome video. I’ve got a pretty nasty transfer case leak on my 88 suburban I thought I could just replace some gaskets or seals and that’s the end of it but it looks as though I’m going to have to take it completely apart and rebuild it? Thank you for making this video and thank you for posting all the things you used to do this rebuild. This is vital information for people like myself that have no clue what they’re doing.

Thank you! You should be able to replace the seal where the slip goes into the tail housing (if that’s where your leak is) without cracking the case. Otherwise, you might be in for opening it up. Wishing you good luck!

Would you mind dropping the rebuild kit you used, bearing puller, and output seal (you said it was missing from the kit)? I'm looking at potentially rebuilding the NP208 on my M1008 due to leaks.

Thank you. Just curious, what was the reason you needed to rebuild? I suddenly have a t case issue with my 87 k10 and will be doing the same soon

@@amosikner1297 I lost 4H. It quickly went from popping out of gear and grinding to not engaging at all. The issue was a bad shift fork. -don’t remember if I mentioned that in the video or not.

Also, quick question out of curiosity, is there anything that you would do different if you were to do it again?

Great question- I can’t think of anything other than buying the correct bearing puller in advance. Gladly, the parts were all available, even the shift fork I needed to replace. I suppose I would have replaced the chain while I had it all apart if I were to do it again.

hello!! thank you very much for the video. Today I added oil to my NP208 transfer, started the engine and it had a leak from the rear outlet. I think it is the rear seal. I'm in the middle of a swap and haven't installed the rear transfer yoke yet. my questions are: Do you know what part number the rear seal is? Do you think the lack of the yoke is the reason for the transfer oil leak? thank you very much in advance

I don't have the part number but my local parts store had it on the shelf and it was inexpensive, so I hope you have the same experience. And yes, I agree with you, the slip yoke will always seem to leak just a bit because of the movement. They make a slip yoke eliminator kit but I don't have any experience installing one yet. Hope it goes well!

    Hello from France
    a small question
why did you service your 208?
    big problem or maintenance?
during an oil change I noticed deposits of copper or bronze, it works well without strange noise, no metal deposits
    is it serious doctor?
    merci ,tank you

Hello- thanks for watching. I did the rebuild because I lost 4 high. 4 low was ok. My issue was due to one of the shift forks which I replaced. I’m struggling to remember which parts might have been copper or bronze in color. I wish I could be better help but I’m just not sure.

That's a great question. I'm tempted to say that the "guts" are the same for both - but, unfortunately, I'm not 100%. Please let me know what you find out- I'd be interested to know for myself and others.

My np208 in a 87 K5 keeps jumping out of gear in two-wheel drive and I have to put it in four-wheel to make it home any idea what my issue is? And thank you
