How-To Open a Transfer Case / Change Input Shaft - NP231
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 тра 2014
- In this video we are going to open up a transfer case, in this case (no pun intended) we are opening it up to change or replace the input shaft. Some years had different splines on the t-case input shafts and therefore will need to be changed when mixing and matching different year transmissions with transfer cases. Although I'm only changing the input shaft this video could also help you to get the case open to replace the chain, to replace the output shaft, or to install an SYE or slip yoke eliminator.

Just came by to say this video gave me confidence and willingness to rebuild my own 231. And today I drove it and it works by the grace of god
Thanks bleepinjeep guy
Awesome! This saved me a whole host of time! Just needed to change the chain and input spline. A lot of other videos remove the tail housing, oil pump, vehicle speed sensor, and tons more circlips etc. This is way more simple!
there's not many videos about opening transfer cases, I love this video, very helpful!
my friend went to stealership for changing a bearing, and costed him almost $2000, what a rip off :-(
Lol i took it apart this morning and it so happened to be a failure in the braking system. Thanks for responding back. Electrical is next. Really like your channel very informational.
I'm not sure which of your videos I love best; the wheeling ones, or the mechanic ones!
This video helped me just swap a long input shaft to short on a np231j with a advanced adapters sye kit. Thank you Matt .
Excellent video man, this is exactly what I am in the middle of having to do. Keep cranking out the great vids!!
Good video. I’ll be changing the same part in an NP208 this weekend.
Like to thank you for your video on pulling a transfer case from the salvage yard. I went and pulled one the next day. All the bolts went easy but one on the cross member that held up Transfer Case. I got some from the salvage yard a saw all to cut it off for $25.
Thanks for the proper disassembly video.. I took my last NP231 apart by winging it and definetly realized I missed some steps on the way. I got it apart and back together though. However, during a massive burnout at a car show I turned my case into shrapnel. Turns out 400hp through it from an LSx and GM 6L90 was too much when a ujoint cap let loose throwing the shaft out of balance... This literally tore the t-case to pieces.
I have to put the 31 spline input shaft in my new case so that it will once again bolt to the 6L90 trans. Then I can get my LSX swapped Kia Sorento back on the road!!
Id like to see a picture of that
Thanks for the video! If I can make a correction though, perhaps this can save someone an extra step. I am a professional mechanic, and having just finished this exact job, check the part number on the bearing for the input shaft. It should be the same, so there's no reason to swap bearings or the whole half of the case. A light tap with a mallet should set the input shaft on the bearing with no troubles, just be sure to double check that you can put the snap rings back in before sealing the two halves together in case the bearing has moved out of place
No, depending on what year/model you got your np231j from, there is definitely two different bearings. A thicker or thinner one. If you don’t know which bearing you have you can compare the input shafts. The one with the thinner bearing will have a collar made on the input shaft that makes up the difference to the thicker bearing. I don’t know if that made sense lol but I’ll gladly send you pictures.
Bd10-8 for the thicker one
6010-r for the thinner one
ok, finally a pro who might give me some feedback about a question i have.First off your site is awesome ive learned so much.Thank you!! My question is as im doin clutch and and sye kit i have oil ot of t-case and i grabbed front out-put shaft and turned it quickly about a 1/4 turn with 4wd engaged and it clunks but no chain slap.I feel and know tension goes from one side of chain to the other when twisting frint yoke back and forth. But how much clunk and noise is too much.I dont have quiet a 1/4 inch play from front trans. input shaft until rear output shaft from t-case turns. It seems like little slack but its a 99 tj 4.0 and its not been beat up and wheeled alot.im 2nd owner. But im sorry im dragging on but this could make you a good video to show when a t-case is ready for a rebuild and why and what is common for t-cases to sound like and any info that your a pro at explaining would be awesome.I would really like to go through the t-case but ive busted the budget lately and just want to know what is normal and not.i have no leaks and its a 231-j 5 speed and chain not slapping so please tell me what you think.it doesnt whine or make noise on road. But of coarse if in 4 low in higher gear goin kinda fast it whines a little. But considering its in low and its being stressed all i feel are gonna whine some,Right? Or no> Please help, you have more experience that most all
Buenas noches muy soy de Argentina y me guio por las cosas que hace muy interesante no entiendo nada Inglés pero viendo los vídeos me despejó con muchas dudas gracias campeón
This video has helped me out lots to what i looking forward to do when opening up the transfer case. Just a question or two....
Every time my jeep shifts at stop and go traffic, it shifts hard and clunks. I have adjusted the tv cable and checked everywhere and everything in the transmission, So i narrowed it down to the transfer case.
Bottom line, Can i just gut the transfer case but only use parts necessary for 2WD?
4WD Chain, etc?
I never use 4WD/ AWD never needed it. It be less weight and better gas mpg for me.
Best explained video for 231 transfer case!!!
Love that Table you made !!!!!!!!
I rebuilt my tc three times just a few months ago. had to keep taking it apart and putting it back in because I couldn't pull the shaft out far enough to accept the snap ring. finally I had my buddy shift it a few times from inside the cab and I was able to fit everything together. what a headache though.
How do I check the gear ratio ? Video was awsome, really helped me out
not that I need to do my TC but always good to know. Nice vids!
I have a big problem with a 4x4 silverado 2011 1500 ..you are 3 times the 4x4 is activated when is running and after 3 or 4 hours away and the transfer gears break case ... is dash swith .. ...
thank you for your help
hi my name is Adriano from Brazil , I really enjoy this vid , its so useful , thanks for post this kind of the videos , see you
We are doing same thing now on 2 np247j should the t case be in a certain gear 4wd hi n or 4 low before splitting 1st case got stuck bad when we tried to pop it apart had to pull cone off to get it apart
very informative didn't need to watch it but it makes me want to rebuild one
If I want to make an engine swap what should I know about the compatibility between the transfer and transmission
Nice video I have some dana axles and trans with transfer case
Is it possible to rotate the transfer case clockwise for more ground clearance
man I'm having this bearing rattle/grinding noise on 4th and 5th after 1800 rpm what do you think it can be
I am about to rebuild my 241 OR Rubicon transfer case. Do you know if it is more complicated than the 231. I know its beefier but I just want to make sure I dont have any surprises. Thanks guys.
I have a manual that I'm putting in, it has a 32 spline output, the 208 case that I have is a 27, can I take the 32 out of a 231 case and put it in the 208 case?
Thanks for the video do you know if this is the same process for the np208?
is the yoke supposed to slide out that easily mine did and hit me in the face, wasnt expecting it to fly so easily?
I have an 2004 with full time 4wd,want to switch to part time,Is there any route I could go to make it plug and play?
I really like this channel
super informative with comedic relief!
I need to do the same on my case. Do you know where I can purchase a 23 spline input shaft? I heard there are early and later versions of them.
Thanks
I have a 93 Jeep zj With the 249 TC and i want to swap inti a 242 J. Can i use the 93 ' 249 input shaft on the 242 j? Thanks
hey there, I have 95 zj with 5.2 249 tcase and want to change to a 231 command trac. I have both tcases out and it looks like the length of the input shafts are different. Can i just change these input shafts out and be ok?
My xj starts grinding in 4 lo. When I get a steeper angle climbing... what would that be possibly please anyone? Thanks also pops out of 4 lo :/
At the chevy dealership I used to work at we used lock tight anaerobic sealer is better because of the tight sealing tolerances
Silent Death
how do i find out what the length of the input shaft is?
Since you reused the old case, does that mean you didn't replace the bearing for the 23 spline shaft that was possibly burnt up?
Hey, im doing a np249 to np231 swap in my 1993 zj, do u know if the front half of the 249 will mate with the back half of the 231. i love this channel
Great video! thanks for posting!
I too have a jeep that the p.o. had left it with no oil. I have another np231 with different size splines. You ended up using the front half of your old transfer case so could i do the same and leave it installed? could i gut the destroyed transfer case and replace everything else with the good parts? Anybody?
Thank you, your video help me out so much
Meesho Batayeh
Were you able to do this?
Matt I'm having an issue I have a 249 did all the steps case won't separate all the way
Hi Matt, Looking for your opinion regarding a leaky rear yoke on my NP 231 TC. The rear shaft seal is bone dry, but the seal just behind the yoke appears to have been compromised. I don't believe there is one of those star-shaped washers like the front yoke(?) I'm thinking of simply using RTV, but not sure how well it will hold. Suggestions?
So when I put the 23 spline shaft in to replace the 21, will I have to replace the bearing due to the difference in diameter of the new shaft? Or will it fit with the old 21 spline bearing?
Great video… would it be easier to replace the shaft from a 23 to a 21 than mess with the T Case?
Thank you for this video, I am wondering if anyone knows if all NP242 Input gears will work in all Np242 styles. I am about to tear down a HMMWV (32 Spline) NP242HD and replace the input gear with a 242J so it fits my 46rh Transmission (23 spline). Called several offroad stores and some parts manufactures and no one knows for sure, If anyone knows please let me know. thanks in advance and thanks again for the video
hi all. I just bought a zj with a 249 transfer case. when I drive in town and on the highway, which position should I put the transfer case in....neutral or 4 All time? new to 4x4's and your help would be appreciated
Hi: Did you say grease, as in gear oil? I think my 2000 XJ uses ATF. Is that right? Thanks!
Best video yet. Thanks!
the video description is killer :D
How much play is acceptable for the front output shaft ?
I had a 345 out of f 250 that slipEd in 4 wd the shifter was,not throwing all the way in
what do you think of the atlas over the 231 in a jl i got a 249 im changing it out soon ..
I just did a transfer case the same way as you did. Now that it is in the jeep I tried to shift it into four wheel drive and nothing it’s won’t shift at all like it’s frozen or stuck.
So I bought one for parts as a rebuildable core, same situation as yours, 21 spline to 23, I tried removing the yoke the same way and it ended up BREAKING my casting lol. I did use like 10 penetrating oils, got the rust off the exposed threads and used my impact for like 10 mins trying to loosen it. Even after it broke I put the yoke in my vice and I can turn my workbench before I could open that! lol
I now sell a yoke tool on my website for that reason.
Make sure the snap rings or somewhere in the garage
After the swap you just did, is it ready to put in a WJ grand Cherokee?
Great Video Matt!! I know this video did the input shaft and you talked about the SYE. I wanted to know if you had seen this video by Advance Adapters on the NP 231 SYE? Jeep New Process 231- NP231 SYE Install - Slip Yoke Eliminator
Thanks again for all the videos and keep up the good work.
Hey Matt. I’m running into an issue. Did you use the front half of the 249 mated to the back half of the 231??
Will the231 part fit 360 transfer cases of dakota
im gonna inspect bearings and ill probably put new fork pads, and ive been looking for the t-case shifting fork bushings that ive seen that you have replaced maybe all dont have, that are on the fork shaft where it slides back down into case. Please any input much appreciated.Ive been watchin you for years.I know your pressed for time so i really appreciate it very much.Robert A
With the cut of the old input shaft bring wrong, did you buy your input shaft from Novak conversions? I’m having a hard time finding the right 21 spline shaft to put into my late model case. According to Novak conversions website there are a ton of options between length, etc and getting the right one is a head ache.
Question. Is the process for changing the input shaft for the 231 T-Case in any way similar for the 242 T-Case? I've heard that, other than the different 4-wheel-drive settings, they're largely the same, so.....
thanks so lot for sharing this video.
Here's a question for you how compatable is a Nv233 to a NV 232?
My 12 point 10mm fits that one little bolt perfectly.
if Im understanding this correct... in situation where you want to take a spare NP231 w/ SYE pre-installed...and swap it into your yours (w/out SYE)..... one could:
. remove the front half off NP231 (while still on the rig) ...
. Do the same to the spare w/SYE....
. swap the spare's front into the back half still on the jeep
Sound about right?
asking cause on mine to use the spare on the rig.... would have to have the input shaft swapped from one still on rig to the spare before use. Thus thinking just change the front half while it is still on rig and be done with it.
Great video!
Hi Matt
Can you tell me the sizes of the 23 spline
Thank u soo much u just saved me like 500 bucks I love u
What Jeep is that black one on the left side?
I got some transfer case/ transmission question. You might be able to direct me in the right direction lol. I have a jeep with 46re trans going bad 3rd time. I found a built A500 aka 42rh is what I've been told again lol. Want to run my tcase in jeep now but the input shaft looks shorter than the one I pulled off the A500. Any help would be appreciated
Good stuff again. Thanks.
I know I’m super late to the game as far as when this video was posted, But does anyone know if I can transplant the guts of a 231 with a slip yoke delete into a 242 out of an 88 Cherokee?
The driveline bound up from crappy U-joints and cracked the 231
Hi there! Got a question. My local shop did the same conversion and now I hear a constant gear noise from the tc. It sounds like having it in 4low. When I select neutral in the tc and leave the jeep roll downhill the noise is gone. Any thoughts? :( big thanx
Why? when you had it in peices didn't you replace the bearings?? They were right there and would have saved a lot of heartache in the furture!! Cheers love Bleepininjeep channel !!
Thank you for this video
Really good work 👌🙏👍
Does anyone know if a 32 spline shaft from a np241 will work in a np231
When and how would you listen for the noise of a loose chain in the transfer case? Since I bought my Cherokee it's been occassionally wanting to vibrating when sitting still at a red light, sometimes pretty loudly, but if you shift it into neutral the vibration and humming noise goes away... Which I can only assume is transfer case related. Doesn't happen under load. Could this be the bearings in there?
I was afraid you were going to say something like that. Why couldn't it be something I could take off myself in the garage and replace parts in, like the transfer case? Thank you again.
I'm digging your videos, I can still smell the grease...
First time doing a transfer case, 242, was trying to split the case, and take the back side off while leaving the front side attached to the jeep. I have the case split but can't get it any further than about an 1"-1 1/'2 apart. What did I miss? newby
Thinking I have to remove the nut off the front driveshaft?
need more vids like this!!
i have a jeep wrangler sport 97 and a xj 89 model does the transfercase or the rearshaft fit my wrangler or can i swap transfercase over one is auto one is manusl i am shor i have bent myrear shaft i am braking unis i am needing any help
No not really but that's what this video is for, so you can change the input shaft to make it work.
thanks dude - respect and a salute to you. I recently purchased a 1977 Chevy K5 Blazer with a NP203. It is leaking badly and I believe that it has a cracked case. Going to have it towed abt 15 miles to a repair shop to r&r the 203 unit. How much damage will I cause to start it up in N, let the engine warm up abt 5 mins, then back it out of the garage, then back and forth to align with the tow truck. ? Any advice on changing the input shaft? mine has the turbo 4OO, not the turbo 35O, shaft spline is different..
+Mike Fitzryk if the case is just cracked and nothing is bound up inside I would say it'l be just fine.
One to many burnouts and a stretched chain I now have to do this as well wish me luck boys
Thanks
lost my plug n all the fluid out of my transfer case ....don't no for how long ...what should I do to c if there's any damage
Honestly if your not in 4wd then there could be very little damage. These are sealed units and you don't get enough crap in them to eat up parts. The ball bearings are all large roller balls and don't make TONS of heat. I actually had a bad gasket in mine and it constantly ran out of fluid. I never had a problem with it either, but it was never in 4wd which engages the front yoke and chain to start to move. The chain is what needs lube and oil cooling very badly. If you see a t-case chain you'll understand why. Its not like a bike chain, there is a lot of friction there... Just get your plug in and fill it with fluid. Then change it shortly after looking at the draining fluid for signs of wear.
Can you attach the AX15 to a NP231 thinking about switch my AW4 to the AX15.. but if the AX15 doesn't attach to get then not going to get it
Robert De La Rosa yes! but you have to change the input shaft to a 23 spline SHORT. go to advanced adapters and search np231 23spline short should be 200$ then follow this video and it will bolt right up to the ax15!
I found bits of black rubber in my transfer case. do you think it is just rtv or something else? thanks in advance
+Sean England Yes , most likely it is just RTV from the case being sealed .. You want to make sure you use just enough to seal the case and not so much that it squeezes out on the inside of the case ... It can clog the screen and cause the pump to fail ..
How. Do you prep a transfer case for the shelf? To save it for later
Don’t open it, leave the oil in it, block off all the holes.
How do you change that last seal on the input shaft? Do you pull it out from the inside?
Yep
They need a dodge version of the 29 spline input shaft.
The tcase in my 94 Xj np231 J with 23 spline went bad so I bought a used one but it’s an np231 AMC which is exactly like the one you worked on with 21 spline. My question is can I do this exact same thing you did and use it in my 94 XJ? Im able to swap out the electric speedo and the other plug from my old tcase and put it into this one but will it work? Please let me know thanks 🙏
If it fits it fits, I would think so... just gotta get the right spline
BleepinJeep
Can I use the 23 spline from my blown out tcase and put into the tcase that came with 21 spline? Just asking so I don’t have to buy a new part
Hey man, good meeting you at the show, Im sure you dont remember me since there was thousands of people there. Anyways, I have a NP241OR thats giving me some trouble. When the front DS is in it wants to make a god aweful sound, when I take the shaft out it goes away. Im thinking maybe a bearing is shot. What do you think?
Maybe the front output bearing on the tcase or the ujoints on the shaft itself if it's more of a clicking noise.
Thank you 🙏🏻🙂
im not sure but s10 guys use this transfer case in sas (solid axle swap/s)
