One of my customers had their car towed to Pep Boy's after it died driving down the highway. They told him his motor was locked up solid and had to be replaced. He wanted a second opinion so I went down to the Pep Boy's. Put a breaker bar on the crank pulley and sure enough it would not turn. Pep Boy's mechanic came out all proud, "it needs a motor". Back in the day (1976-80), all parts stores were privately owned in Cheyenne, WY. I usually did business with the one open on Sundays, as they were Saturday Adventists and closed on Saturdays. Good people.
Decades ago I had a 1970 Volvo 145. Driving it home from work on the freeway I heard the unmistakable sound of a rod knock. I got it home and dropped the pan... no loose rod bearings! The sound, even at pull-through, was actually coming from under the timing cover. The fiber ringed timing gear had separated, with the fiber piece riding up until it slapped back down. I replaced the gear and all was well.
Been there done that with my 145 somewhere on Vermont Route 29 east of Schuylerville, NY. I pulled the timing cover in the Summer sun while my work partner first hitched to town for a 1 1/16" socket and then to Albany for a timing set ($110.00). Installed the new gears, tightened the nut and snapped the end right off the camshaft. What a day! We still had to go to Marine city, Michigan and I was burned to a sun-fired crisp. Good times. Ooooo a video. A tick!? That sounds horrendous. I thought it was going to sound like my gmc, got a lifter tick, old 5.3. Tick tick tick, all the time. My bet on the red one is either a water pump failure or maybe timing chain. 🤷♂️ *I was wrong*
It makes you feel good to give someone good news for a change. I've been able to do it three times in the last week. A friend showed up today for some advice on his 1999 Silverado 5.3. It was just making a racket. Then the belt broke and it got quiet. He was pretty relieved it was just the water pump because until that belt broke he was convinced it needed an engine.
Super job as always South Main Auto LLC! And the Videos are never too silly you are teaching the masses, and that = Priceless for those who are not aware. My 1992 BMW is rattling this spring when I took it out of storage, I'm afraid to look but you give me new hope that maybe it won't be the water pump and this old guy can relax.👍
Good and simple. Had a tensioner on a 90's Monte Carlo that broke and broke the serpentine belt. AAA got me towed to garage for which I was already scheduled for a NY State inspection. Told owner it's a little more than inspection now.
I put an 06, 6.0 engine in my 62 GMC and I smelled rubber burning and shut it off quick. The idler pully bearing had desentigrated and the belt was getting abused. I started it long enough to coast down the hill in town and was very happy the local parts store had one and loaned me a 15 mil wrench to change it out. Sometimes it's easy peasy 👍
That's why I rotate my belt every other oil change along with my tires so I can check all the roller bearings and get maximum belt life with even wear.
When I heard it I knew it was either an idler, compressor, alternator, or power steering pump. I said idler arm since mine made a ticking noise a few years ago, and, it was THIS loud, but it sounded like a belt drive part. Eric is a good mechanic. Could have sold an engine, especially with it leaking oil bad, but, he has integrity, and that makes him A #1 in MY book. Cheers.
Scared me as well when you first cranked it, I thought it had completely wiped the valvetrain. Good thing he has you for a mechanic, he could've been taken to the cleaners.
Great video. My favorite part was Mrs. O saying that doesn't sound like an exhaust manifold. When you mentioned that the truck uses a ton of oil it reminded me of something my father said. He was a Ford mechanic and a buddy had told him his F350 was using a ton of oil. Dad said I know it's gonna sound strange but next oil change use Motorcraft oil and see what happens. No more using a ton of oil. This was back in the stone age (late 70's). I'm not saying he should put Motorcraft oil in a GMC because that just goes against the laws of nature. Maybe change oil brands. Maybe not use Walmart oil. Maybe not go to Express Lube and Chinese food.
Might have seemed ridiculous, however, I would have spent time trying to put a piece of wood all over the engine, etc. to find the noise as opposed to just going through the step process of taking off the belt to eliminate the drive pulleys. So to me, this video is worth it. I've had the pleasure of the learning experience of ordering a pulley, and then finding out that it was, or rather, it comes in different formats some are smooth and some have grooves. And more importantly, some come with a new bolt and some do not. Then there are some that have a bushing and some that do not for the bolt. So for the DIY guy, trust me when I say this is still a valuable video even to you the professional.
I have a 2015 that the tensioner pulley was fine one day, started talking to birds the next, then cut the width of the belt right down the middle the day after that. It went from fine to nearly catastrophic nearly instantly.
You could have sold that guy a new engine. There's a special place in heaven for ethical mechanics.

I thought it was going to sound like my gmc, got a lifter tick, old 5.3. Tick tick tick, all the time.
My bet on the red one is either a water pump failure or maybe timing chain. 🤷♂️ *I was wrong*
Yeah I was half expecting to hear the common GM tick of the manifolds when it is cold. Surprised me a little lol
@@SouthMainAuto I bet!
That is another reason I will be a lifelong viewer, honesty, integrity, and straightforward. Stay safe, and God bless
Mr O saving a Chevy from the crusher again
Definitely not a wasted video. It's the kind of fix we always hope for when it's our own rig, but rarely get.
Great coffee time video, 👍.
This Canadian is happy that something built here actually worked for you.
Nice to see a honest mechanic not many left
Thanks as always, Eric!
Wow that sounded like terminal failure to start with 😂😊
Than you for the quiet stool.
Simple fixes are always welcome and appreciated
Bet that customer was REALLY happy to get that phone call.
Wow, i have never heard a 5.3 idler make THAT much noise.
Outstanding !! 😮😂😊
Maybe "a silly video" but it's very amusing and it put a smile on my face on this all too early morning
Good and simple. Had a tensioner on a 90's Monte Carlo that broke and broke the serpentine belt. AAA got me towed to garage for which I was already scheduled for a NY State inspection. Told owner it's a little more than inspection now.
Definitely not silly video. You sir, are a blessing. Saved your customer tons of money! Im sure he will be breathing fresh now.
I did my first camshaft/Lifters at the shop. Took four days, so there’s room for improvements. 2019 GMC 6.2
I had a tensioner go out in my '01 Duramax but it didn't sound anything like that one! No wonder you shut it down after first hearing.
I didn't knew a tensioner could make so much noise😂😂😂, thank you for uploading it!
Well done Mr O always refreshing to see a great mechanic with integrity so many out there without lately.
Looking forward to the GDI injector install!! I just spent 1k at a GM shop in central PA to get the #3 injector changed!! GREAT SCOTT!!
