  • Prior To Departure - EP1
Social media is a mirage - the social quotient diminishes as you look at it more closely - it peacocks the illusion of connection - while in reality it sacrifices connectedness. This feigning of human connection to advertisements for versions of people is a mediation… it lies between us while we unwittingly accept this dynamic.
I decided to fly to see my friend Amy, who I had not seen in 30 years, and document what happened.

I’ve been excited about your original idea and this series since I heard you talking about it awhile back. A really great idea. Well done and I’m looking forward to more. And thanks to Amy for participating! She really made the video extra worthwhile

Best one yet. Thank you. For me, this takes me back to the people I grew up with. Those folks shaped me. And I miss them. And now I am going to reach out to them. Beautiful content. 🙌

Great video Brian! I love that you used all this archive footage to help tell the story. I’ve actually done a bit of this in my life with some grade school friends and folks I worked with in my first career in the early 1980s. These are people we had connections with, sometimes strong connections, shared great times and made great memories. Then, life happened and we went separate ways. It’s amazing though how the memories and stories surface after just a little “nudge of the brain cells, that deep memory”.

Keeping those connections is a challenge but so worth it yes! Thanks for watching.

love the PRIOR TO DEPARTURE project concept. notes as we watched:
    "conscientious objectors to social media"
"we didn't worry about much. we probably should have."
10:15 I love this view. just a gopro sitting on a table.
"I feel the same and totally different at the same time." .. and then investigating how she remembered you.
19:10 wow, the way you keep this shot going surprised me.
the bonus story at the end was great.

Thanks for watching man and glad you enjoyed it. Yes I was not even checking the shots just tossing an old gopro around on no mount or stand.

I liked this, but I really liked the very last bit - the memory of the bridge. There are so many things that I did as a kid that I wouldn't do now. I'm not sure if it's due to increased wisdom or decreased courage. I tell myself it's the former.

So much to unpack on this one. Absolutely loved it. There were a lot of truths expressed in this video, especially about being authentic. I can't wait for the next one.

    Brian,
Digging deep with this one. I’m so glad we are from the analog era. Those days and friends are real, unclouded by the social media presence. I can always pick up with my old analog friends and it’s like zero time has passed. Looking forward to this series as it evolves!

So skeptical of social media is interesting. It's a tool like anything else. Can give a snapshot of where you're at. But like any tool can be overused or abused. Use social media wisely. I feel like the most high school kids for the most part has more awareness of the appropriate boundaries then we sometimes give them credit for.
