    I think her second place finish here and in '95 really pushed her to train hard so that by 1996 there was NO question she would win. She was such a complete skater here that if this program had been clean it would have been a closer race between her and Harding's LP scores.

    What perplexes me is why the USFSA didn't award the title to Michelle after stripping Tonya of it; makes no sense to leave it vacant.

    • @scottw6704
      @scottw6704 23 дні тому

      Because she didn't earn the title. It would mean shifting everyone that skated into a different placement also, which would affect international rankings. This way, the penalty only affected the one skater and didn't change anyone else's. Simply put, everyone's placement was kept based on how they skated. Tonya still skated best of all the skaters, and no one should be able to take that away from her regardless of her "official title".

    Was she a senior skater when she was 12?? Can skaters compete in Nationals as seniors when they are 11 or
    12 years old??

    • @Karamarika
      @Karamarika 10 місяців тому +1

      She was 13 at her first senior Nationals (1994). I think her birthday is in July. You can compete at the national level at pretty much any age, but you can't compete at the Olympics unless you are 16 by a certain date. That means you can compete at age 15 as long as you will be 16 by the cutoff. They made that rule after Lipinski, iirc. People got upset that she won so young.

      @@Karamarika. Thank you for the information. So, why don't skaters try to compete in junior and senior levels like Michelle Kwan to get more experience as elite akaters??

    • @Karamarika
      @Karamarika 10 місяців тому

      @@arf2847 it depends on the skater and their coaches. They need to think they are ready to handle that level of pressure, attention, and competition. It's a big deal when you are shown on national TV. Some skaters move up to senior nationals early, but then they get sent to junior worlds because they don't qualify by age for senior level ISU competition. They are apparently moving the age qualification up even higher now.
      Personally, I don't think that is the best move, especially for the ladies. They tend to peak from 14-18 and men tend to peak later, from about 19-25. Also, skaters have more time to train when they are teens vs when they are in college. I do understand that they are trying to combat these young girls who move up really fast and then fizzle out quickly. But it's also taking away their best opportunity to succeed. It's a tough issue.

    • @brynneholt1990
      @brynneholt1990 Місяць тому

      No, the changed the rule that you had to be FIFTEEN before a certain date BEFORE Tara won the Olympics. She did not make the cutoff date but she was allowed to compete because she had previously competed at worlds and was “grandfathered in “. Now, for the 2026 skaters will have to be 17 by a certain date in order to compete in the Olympics. They changed this because of the Russians trying to get away with cheating based on their star’s minor age of 15. This year to compete in Worlds skaters had to be 16, and next year it will probably be 17, but certainly by 2026.

    I think it's also important to note that we are watching the Gold Medal Spot routine from Michelle Kwan since Tonya Harding was stripped of her title. While Michelle was not awarded the title later she is largely considered the Ladies Champion from 1994 - Which makes her the youngest unofficial ladies champion ever from the only year in figure skating history where a US female champion was not named.

    • @raiherrer6494
      @raiherrer6494 8 років тому +9

      Which would also technically make her a 10 time us champion. That means she also technically broke Maribel Vincent Owen's record of 9 titles.

    • @electrictroy2010
      @electrictroy2010 6 років тому +6

      Yeah I’ve never understood that. If somebody is stripped of the gold (such as drug doping) then everyone else should move up. Michelle Kwan should be promoted silver to gold, and Nicole Bobek, Rlsine Zaysk should also be promoted
      .

    • @richardross4677
      @richardross4677 5 років тому +4

      I never got why if Harding was stripped people werent moved up. I think it was a combination of feeling uncomfortable with a 13 year old girl as National Champion, and basically holding the unofficial spot Kerrigan would have taken for her.

    • @richardross4677
      @richardross4677 3 роки тому

      @homie0187 Yes I agree! Also it would allow them to bump everyone up. And giving Elaine Zayak a bronze and not just a pewter for the incredible effort for the comeback she made would be fiiting too. Because they refused to move Kwan up as they should, they are also unable to move others up, and that really sucks for Elaine who made such an incredibly unlikely comeback after dealing with years of depression.

    • @richardross4677
      @richardross4677 3 роки тому +2

      @homie0187 I generally like Tonya but she honestly should have just withdrawn from the Olympics gracefully once it came out she was involved in the Kerrigan attack, which would have allowed Kwan to skate. She wouldn't have been a medal contender of course, could have placed top 10 maybe, but the experience of skating at an Olympics already might have even helped her in 98 when she was the favorite. Harding even admited herself she would never have a chance with the judges once it came out people connected to her were part of the whole Kerrigan thing, so she should have just preserved what little dignity she had left by withdrawing rather than threatening a 25 million lawsuit if she pulled her, and saved the Olympics from turning into a ridiculous circus and sideshow. Hilarious this was the one year of reinstated pros and legends returning, and even they were ignored because Harding and Kerrigan charade took up all the news.

      @tumicduguar2583 3 роки тому +2

      Definitely not. Her jumps while good are nowhere near as good as Harding's, and gangly and weak artistry too. On what planet was she ever outskating Harding even before the fall.

    • @scottw6704
      @scottw6704 23 дні тому

      I really don't see how. She was still skating like a junior skater, and that has never helped anyone nationally or internationally as far as competition is concerned. Several coaches had confirmed in different instances that the judges want a LADIES' champion, not a girls' champion. Even without comparing artistry, Harding was miles beyond Kwan technically. Kwan's artistry was still very junior here as well. Potential, absolutely, and I think coming in second here and in '95 really pushed her to train hard as her body matured into adulthood - and so by 1996 she was virtually unstoppable artistically.

    • @MrZola1234
      @MrZola1234 7 років тому +3

      Based on talent alone, Tonya deserved the spot, she was better than Michelle at 13. The open question is whether the federation should have stripped her of her right to compete based on her involvement in the attack on Nancy. At the time of the decision to let her skate, Tonya had admitted that she knew facts about the attack and failed to report. Also, that despite her denial of being part of the plan, all the coconspirators said she was involved in the planning, and she did have the most to gain from the attack. She threatened to sue them for 10 million if not allowed to compete. They let her compete, but to add more to the question of whether they should have let her is the fact they banned her for life from skating after Tonya plead guilty to hindering prosecution, rather risk trial and likely conviction of being part of the underlying crime.
