How many people actively seek out this and other videos of Michelle Kwan's programs because they transcend us vs. how many look for Lipinski's? And this is why Kwan is the greatest skater of living memory.
This was beatufuilly skated! Not tight at all as my memory ticked me into believing. So simple yet so sophisticated. Had she skated later in the gourd she would have won!
@@ft-je3rs History has proved she was the best . Tara disappeared after that. Michelle a five-time World champion (1996, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2003) and a nine-time U.S. champion (1996, 1998-2005). She is tied with Maribel Vinson for the all-time National Championship record.
I disagree with Tara’s win here. She tried more difficult jump combos for sure, but in the old judging system, the artistic mark that should have balanced both programs was used as a cop-out. There’s no way Tara’s artistic marks should have rivaled Michelle’s. You can give technical kudos to Tara here, but artistic should have been Michelle’s, in which case, the deciding factor should have been the results of the short program. That all being said, 20+ years later, Michelle showed that she had determination and longevity to push through and cement herself as an icon in the sport. Tara was a one-hit wonder by comparison. The way Michelle handled herself in the face of defeat beyond her control really made her one of the world’s most recognizable faces and role models of figure skating. One could argue that her career wouldn’t have lasted the test of time had she won here, so though unfair, I think it was a blessing in disguise.
Michelle Kwan was robbed! She should've won the gold metal. Tara's performance was good, too, but I though Michelle gave more of a mature, graceful performance.
Give Kwan credit. She skated her heart out, and I disagree on her being timid, and she wasn't a chicken, either. Lipinski did perform quite well, too, but I still think the gold should've gone to Kwan.
Kwan earned every medal she won. The judges never propped her up. She would have brought more pride and presence to the Olympic Gold Medal Club than any of the other women who won the gold instead of her. I doubt we'll ever see another skater with as long and illustrious career as she had.
M.K.s spectacular career and legacy has become bigger than the Olympics. OG has forever lost its magic and luster without her name on it. She never needed it, it needed her .
I'm a big Michelle fan. I used to think she was robbed of the gold here. But then I had rewatched Tara's program years later and I felt Tara's program was technically much harder than Michelle's so perhaps she deserved to win. Then I watched this again and I feel Michelle should have won simply because in the 6.0 days, artistic mark is the tie breaker and I firmly believe Tara didn't deserve the 5.9s she gotten as her artistry wasn't there. Technically, she was definitely above Michelle. But her artistry wasn't. Hence at the end of the day, Michelle should have won the gold.
No, because if you invest a lot of time trying this spin, you will eventually be able to do it. While you can spend your whole life training figure skating and never achieve a triple-triple. I agree that I see that spin, and it's wonderful, artistic and creative, and difficult, but not to loose sight, jumps are much difficult
Panchino Maldonado Mountain Lover clearly needs more than our help. Kwan is and will always be the People’s Champion. Her legacy transcends and dwarfs all of her contemporaries. And she continues to inspire and evolve. Some people are just so bitter and dead inside they can’t possibly be touched by her genius. And those of us that can, we are the lucky ones. And the majority.
THis will forever be heartnreaking to me. Sure Tara was a show pony, and hit all her marks, but with Michelle there was an elegance that cannot be taught. She was a natutal talent, and it still breaks my heart she never won gold.
She may not have won the gold, but she was an artist on ice! I still watch her Salt Lake city 2002 gala performance (fields of gold) frequently. She was so classy, elegant and She will never be forgotten.
FnA, I think the judges lowballed her because they didn't wanna lose her. If Michelle won the gold here, she more than likely would have retired. All in all it all worked out in the end, she became the most decorated skater in the history of the sport. The aG.O.A T.
@@theprinceoftides6836 her technique was horrible, even though Im not a skater technique its very obvious that her lutz its a flutz and she has never done a triple triple combo...
I felt like history repeated itself during Sochi. High Technical elements wins over Artistry/presentation with 1 slight off balance from Michelle's Triple Flip and Yu Na Kim's Triple Lutz.
That was perfect performance. Still after all these years this is what god made a mistake on. Michelle kwan won the gold here. She was better than Tara way better.
In retrospect, she had better skating skills, choreography and overall technique than Tara. Tara had a major flutz--her "lutz" was not on the outside edge at all--and her second 3loop on the 3-3 is borderline at best. Her 3-seq-3 combo was a little shaky as well. And Tara never should have seen a 5.9 on the second mark.
I'm a huge Michelle Kwan fan. I was rooting for her to win the gold, but Tara out skated Michelle this night. Michelle did all 6 triples, and her artistry was superb, but she skated tentatively. Tara did two triple/triple combinations, and skated fearlessly. Tara deserved the gold medal.
MezzoSeren For years I was disappointed Michelle didn't win gold. I used to think she was robbed, but now I believe Tara beat her. Tara's jumps were sketchy, but I think the judges rewarded her for attempting the 3/3 combos. Todays judging may have caught the Under rotated jumps and flutz, but this was 20 years ago. It still breaks my heart that Michelle Kwan doesn't have an Olympic gold medal, because I think she's the greatest of all time and my all-time favorite figure skater.
Chip: I agree. Tara was clearly the deserved winner. There wasn't enough distance between Kwan and Lipinski artistically that Kwan could afford to pull back technically and yet, that's exactly what she did, expecting her reputation and art to pull her through, which didn't work. What's interesting is that Kim Yuna went into the 2014 Olympics with only 6 triples, as well. I remember thinking she was crazy to do that. Although a superior skater to Sotnikova, I feel like Kim put all her eggs in the artistic basket, too. I always say Kim lost the gold by one jump and Michelle lost by one rotation. If Michelle had done a triple-triple instead of a triple-double, I think the judges would have given her the nod, even though I still feel Tara was better overall. Funny too, how this same scenario played out in the 2018 games. I predicted a Lipinski type upset because there wasn't enough distance between Medvedeva and Zagitova artistically that Medvedeva could afford to pull back technically, and she did. The rest is history.
@@L1623VP michelle and tara were not close whatsoever in artistry. The reason michelle lost was because she skated first. They held marks. But that 5.7 was not deserved.
This was for sure the best skate of that night. Judges robbed the gold from Michelle. Olympics will regret this for all time. The best skater never got that well deserved gold. We all know by now that Tara Lipinski's Lutz isn't on the right edge. We all know and see and feel that the presentatyion of Michelle's program is way better than Tara's. How come those 5 judges didn't see it???
What you are saying is correct. But Tara's speed and completeness with her movements . . . including her improved artistry as well as her higher technical difficultly and skating her program later is what sealed it all. In retrospect, Michelle's jumps were better technically as well as her moves, but Tara's speed and eye popping Triple/Triple made it go her way. Another day and a different performance from each and it may have gone differently.
@@TT-ee4qp Wrong! In this performance Tara didn't just jump and run. Her artistry was improved and she was in sync with the music. Her presentation matched Kwan in THIS competition and that is PART of the reason why she won!
@@TT-ee4qp In this competition, Tara's artistic quality was superior. There is no point in talking about if she didn't have a certain aspect because she had it all and enough to win that night! So take your opinions and shove it!!😤😫😡
Michelle’s technical difficulty stayed largely the same over the years. Tara was a former US and World Champ who threw a 3L-3L combo in the LP of Nagano - still a combo so difficult it is rarely performed. Plus - a 3S Euler 3T combo STILL used. Tara was artistic and a technical master. All but two judges put her first-Tara deserved Gold in 98 and Michelle should’ve incorporated 3-3 combos after that and she didn’t. It left her vulnerable-and it ultimately cost her.
Lyra Angelica lacks the drama an Olympic program should have. Michelle did not need to extend herself artistically. Had she skated something more difficult like Taj Mahal she would have blown Tara out of the water in the LP&won the gold.
fixing and overscoring and political judging can and most probably will occur under any scoring system in which the sport is "judged". Especially if there is an artistic component. Like in hockey you can see if the ball/puck went in the goal and swimming a stopwatch tells you who hit the boards first. But it's the judge's discretion to allow/disallow and grade elements- be they out of 6 or -3/+3 and even more leeway is given when the sport adds components scores. It happened here, it happened in Salt Lake City, it happened in Sochi and its happened in lot of more minor competitions- be they under the old or new system. It's very political and the nature of the sport allows for it.
I have never ice skated in my life, but have always been a passionate figure skating fan and never miss it on tv. Always loved Kwan and Lapinski and was so taken with excitement of Olympics. When Michelle skated I thought she had it in the bag, but then when Tara skated my immediate thought was that she would win Gold. In my opinion, Tara simply out-skated her that night....plus the sheer joy on Tara’s face through her entire performance, I believe, helped her scores. Regardless, both women are iconic in US figure skating and we were blessed to have them.
tara should've finished 2nd. Especially by the new system, since she underrotated 2 jumps. I think tara is a good actress. that run she did at the end gave her the extra edge in my opinion. Also, had they skated in the order they skated to at nationals, I dont think you would have seen 5.7 for michelle. I think they would've given a few 6.0s also. Placement was everything back then. Under the new system, michelle would've beaten tara easily.
the triple flip was the downfall for her in both Olympics. her triple flip here she landed shaky. had she landed perfectly she might have won the gold here. had she landed the triple flip perfectly in 2002 Olympics, she would have won the gold for sure.
This was a beautiful program but Michelle thought the gold was hers before she even got to Nagano. Her marks were inflated at the US Nationals and she expected the same here. She was inflated in the short program, Tara won that too. Her dad told her that all she had to do was stay standing and the gold was hers. She didn't think that she had to improve technically. She skated an easier program and did so cautiously. She won a Silver medal and didn't earn anything more than that on that night. Sorry folks, that is the truth. An Olympic silver medal is something to be very proud of but when people keep telling you, the gold, im sure it was difficult to digest.
It was very much the same with Patrick Chan in the 2014 Olympics. He was so outrageously over-scored throughout his skating career, that he felt all he needed to do was show up at competitions to earn the gold. Sadly, he was right most of the time. The worst example was the 2013 World Championships before the 2014 Olympics, where Chan fell three times in the long program and STILL won in a judging decision that's highly controversial, even today. The problem is that Chan believed his own press and all the people around him who said "yes" to everything, about how "fabulous" he was and that his artistry was more than enough. So, he never pushed himself to be any better technically because he'd become so used to winning with highly flawed programs for years. He didn't have to work any harder, so he didn't. I'd never seen him skate two clean programs back-to-back. Of course, his artistry wasn't enough at the Sochi Games when his technique fell apart so disastrously that even the judges couldn't hold him up with inflated marks anymore. Even so, he ended up with a silver medal that should have been a bronze. When judges consistently over-score skaters, they don't do them any favors because it gives them a false sense of security that future victories are assured based solely on their reputations, and that there is no real need to improve their skills, even while there are younger and more athletic skaters coming up behind them...as was the case with Chan. Now, he can't even begin to compete technically against skaters like Yuzuru Hanyu, Shoma Uno and Nathan Chen, and has been quickly left behind.
Well definitely I agree Chan had that bad attitude that he could show up and win and didn't learn to compete strongly. But Chan did have better skating skills than everyone, I think most in the skating world would agree but he is now challenging himself on jumps too but it might be too late. But Dennis Tan should have won 2013 worlds, that was so screwed up. And Patrick in that interview after didn't even say I could have done better, his attitude was too arrogant and it kept him down really. Yuzuru challenged himself, quad loop, Patrick has a quad salchow but Patrick jus tcant compete. Best skater in artistry and skill but he is not a good competitor. needs sports psychologist
I know nothing about skating, but I just watched the two performances back to back, and I really enjoyed Michelle much more. Her jumps were higher, and she just seemed more graceful.
All of us thought she had it in the bag. I really won’t blame her if she hates Tara for the rest of her life. But what happened at 6:46? Could that be the reason she lost?
a beautiful skate from michelle. but the thing that i admire so much about tara's skate…she had a long wait…her greatest rival skated way before her…and after nationals michelle got perfect sixes and tara had that trouble in the short program. so for tara to come out…skate with so much speed…that triple loop triple loop combination…she was clearly the winner. and this whole flutzing thing is just bullshit. skaters have been doing that for years. tara, in my book, deserved the gold medal.
I will always wonder what was going through her mind in kiss n cry. Why was she emotional. Was it elation that she skated so well... or was it that she knew she skated cautiously/had a slight check on that 3flip and thought she'd be penalized for that? I notice Frank was trying to console her... so maybe the later? But she looked so happy after that 2nd Lutz. I'm so confused. lol

was the one who moved me with her skating, even though she always messed up and could never put down a clean program she will always be one of the best in the world to me . 🤗
Beautiful skating under tremendous pressure! How in the world did she land all those jumps! What a strong minded competitor!!! ❤️
She is the best skater of all time.
I watched skating in those year's it seemed she ever was in theeeee most pressure inducing placements ....AND STILL DID IT AND DID IT THE BEST MICHELLE... THE WORLD IS EVIL AND YOU MY DEAR WERE EVER EUPHEREAL ; GOD LOVES YOU 🙋
If you remember from the US Nationals she was recovering from a stress fracture. That's why the triple loop- half loop - double toe loop replaced the triple toe loop combo.
Love kwan, she looks so young we love you and we need someone like her again.
音楽とスケーティングが絶妙なる調和を見せた類まれなる選手である。17歳にしてすでにプロの表現力を備え、しかも5種類の3回転ジャンプを跳ぶことができる天才である。
How many people actively seek out this and other videos of Michelle Kwan's programs because they transcend us vs. how many look for Lipinski's? And this is why Kwan is the greatest skater of living memory.
今までで一番好きな選手です💞
This was beatufuilly skated! Not tight at all as my memory ticked me into believing. So simple yet so sophisticated. Had she skated later in the gourd she would have won!
maybe the best triple loop Michelle Kwan ever did in competition 1:13
I was 12 years old when I saw this live on TV. She was my role model.
I love her costume😍 pure and graceful
She is a joy to watch!
Graceful n mature technical and presentation
She was the one who deserved the gold medal
Without question in my book
@@ft-je3rs History has proved she was the best . Tara disappeared after that. Michelle a five-time World champion (1996, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2003) and a nine-time U.S. champion (1996, 1998-2005). She is tied with Maribel Vinson for the all-time National Championship record.
Mountain Lover it was childlike skating that was undeveloped . I prefer maturity
The gold was you ❤️
Michelle Kwan was robbed!
@Mountain Lover I'm sticking to my opinion, regardless. As far as I'm concerned, Kwan is Golden. She skated her heart out.
M.K.s spectacular career and legacy has become bigger than the Olympics. OG has forever lost its magic and luster without her name on it. She never needed it, it needed her .
Indeed!!!
今とは、技がだいぶ違うが、なにかこう気品がある滑りですね。
She'll always be my favorite!
She is the Olympic gold a t least mine
The artistry in this program is hard to beat even with todays skaters.
stanley052380 today's skater have no artistry
Especially with today's skaters
Actually Russian skaters beat her easily in artistry and technical merit.
plumeria66 The Russians all have the same Eteri-driven look, and it's getting old. I don't call that artistry.
@Mountain Lover Well, we will have to agree to disagree then. :)
Kwan I thought won although Lipinski skated brilliantly also. But in my mind Kwan clear won the Olympic gold.
That backwards camel spin should be worth as much as the triple loop combo
No, because if you invest a lot of time trying this spin, you will eventually be able to do it. While you can spend your whole life training figure skating and never achieve a triple-triple. I agree that I see that spin, and it's wonderful, artistic and creative, and difficult, but not to loose sight, jumps are much difficult
Her genius was so under appreciated. If Michelle gets 5.9 for artistic how on earth do you give that to Tara too?
exactly...tara benefited from skating 2nd to last. I remember watching it and saying, wth? 5.7 ok...tara 5.9/5.9...no way...
Mountain Lover youre delusional
Panchino Maldonado Mountain Lover clearly needs more than our help. Kwan is and will always be the People’s Champion. Her legacy transcends and dwarfs all of her contemporaries. And she continues to inspire and evolve. Some people are just so bitter and dead inside they can’t possibly be touched by her genius. And those of us that can, we are the lucky ones. And the majority.
No one compares to kwan.
She was so classy, elegant and She will never be forgotten.
she is the best skater of mine
WOW ANOTHER PERFECT PERFORMANCE WOW SIMPLY AMAZING GODBLESS PEACE AND LOVE ALWAYS TO YOU AND YOURS 😄...(*8*)
Gold metal goes to Michelle Kwan
Amazing
Presentations should’ve been all 6.0. It’s virtually impossible to beat this level of artistic and aesthetic superiority. ❤️
@@Ardit-kq4btand lipysnsky has perfect technique!
I though it was the music..... needed something more to this skate....but an awesome performance by kwan
Just thinking the same....
I felt like history repeated itself during Sochi. High Technical elements wins over Artistry/presentation with 1 slight off balance from Michelle's Triple Flip and Yu Na Kim's Triple Lutz.

タラはpcs5.7が妥当
Tara had the technical but Michelle had the artistic. Both combined has Michelle for the win, well in my books it is.
I still think she was robbed. It's hard to even watch knowing the outcome.
She was robbed.
She played it safe. She wasn't robbed.
Even Frank Carroll said Tara deserved the gold.
Красиво! Умница!
That was perfect performance. Still after all these years this is what god made a mistake on. Michelle kwan won the gold here. She was better than Tara way better.
The camera was hella high class for 1998 ... wow
It's Japanese cameras. 👏
Kwan was full of flutzes too.
Tara should never have seen above a 5.6 on the second mark. She was a great jumper but Kwan was a complete skater.
I second.
Tara only flutz’d on her first lutz on combination. The second lutz was from outside edge
@@HowsaBowsaYowsa Kwan was more of a flat edge, tara was much worse.
If she had won the gold here, i think she would've stayed until SLC to see if she would've joined Katerina as a double OG.
Chip 79 Tara's under-rotations would never have survived IJS. Her components were also hugely over scored- the 5.9 was a joke.
Why do you say Michelle did 6 triples? She did 7.
It feels like the Colours of the wind.
Very talented dancer beautifull 😍👀👻💖👍💞💝💗💘💜💛💚💖
Yes, Still THE BEST SKATE OF THE NIGHT.. TARAHS WAS JUST JUMPS.
Michelle’s Lutz wasn’t on the right edge either
@@venuzmodeling She didn't have the egregious flutz that Tara did.
So take your opinions and shove it!!😤😫😡
какая молодец круто откатала
Michelle’s technical difficulty stayed largely the same over the years. Tara was a former US and World Champ who threw a 3L-3L combo in the LP of Nagano - still a combo so difficult it is rarely performed. Plus - a 3S Euler 3T combo STILL used. Tara was artistic and a technical master. All but two judges put her first-Tara deserved Gold in 98 and Michelle should’ve incorporated 3-3 combos after that and she didn’t. It left her vulnerable-and it ultimately cost her.
i love MK so much, but Tara's long program was better.
@Sportsman Pariente in my opinion the biggest problem with this score is that they gave Tara 5.8 and 5.9 in artistic while only 5.9 to Michelle.
I wonder what they were chatting about during K&C. I think Michelle was emotional because *she knew* that was not her best.
I think she was in emotional pain.
Juan Antonio Moreno No, that was tears of joy and relief.
no she was crying because she was overjoyed that she did well. I mean anyone could pick up on that lol.
5:28 this flutz is so so obvious.
FUN ZENG omg you’re right she’s totally taking off from the wrong edge
Michelle kwan was the real American sweetheart...not nancy karagan
😍💐💐💐
Gold medal should have been Michelle's.
Lyra Angelica lacks the drama an Olympic program should have. Michelle did not need to extend herself artistically. Had she skated something more difficult like Taj Mahal she would have blown Tara out of the water in the LP&won the gold.
this situation is what validates the current judging system. I personally prefer the old 6.0 system.
fixing and overscoring and political judging can and most probably will occur under any scoring system in which the sport is "judged".
E Rivera this wasn’t the new system and the right skater won
I think she thought this was "Gold" which might explain not being able to hold back her tears during the ceremony.
Как изменилось сейчас женское катание.
Оно сейчас стало прыгучим и детским )
the triple flip was the downfall for her in both Olympics. her triple flip here she landed shaky. had she landed perfectly she might have won the gold here. had she landed the triple flip perfectly in 2002 Olympics, she would have won the gold for sure.
the stolen gold from michelle kwan still makes me upset
Even after 20 years I prefer Ms Kwans graceful and elegant performance.
История повторится ровно через 20лет..

Yes she should've come first, then been followed by Irina.
To me Tara had so much joy and passion but this was a beautiful skate too! Olympic gold was always just out of reach for Michelle.
All of us thought she had it in the bag. I really won’t blame her if she hates Tara for the rest of her life. But what happened at 6:46? Could that be the reason she lost?
Красиво!
a beautiful skate from michelle. but the thing that i admire so much about tara's skate…she had a long wait…her greatest rival skated way before her…and after nationals michelle got perfect sixes and tara had that trouble in the short program. so for tara to come out…skate with so much speed…that triple loop triple loop combination…she was clearly the winner. and this whole flutzing thing is just bullshit. skaters have been doing that for years. tara, in my book, deserved the gold medal.
💐💐💐💐💐
She should have won!
Why does she cry?
5.7 and 5.9 1st.
I'm so confused. lol
she mentioned in interviews that she was just relieved she finished well. she was under a lot of pressure from the federation.
6:46 WOW!!!
That Loop landing under the current IJS.
I still cannot believe this did not received a gold medal This gold performance is perfection on all its course and you can’t even compare it to that robotic lame performance by Tara lipinski. Kwan was robbed
