Many landmarks of my life along Hwy 90, like Gulf Coast Military Academy, Spanish Oaks Apartments, and Rosarios, just to name a few, have succumbed to time and the changing landscape. But, that's to be expected. I look forward to going back for a week or so to enjoy the old that remains along with discovering what's new and interesting.
I am a bit paranoid to say this due to not wanting to jinx myself, but so far I have had no problem with water and trash pickup. I am actually excited that it comes twice a week. Something that is unheard of in most other places and I have never had in other places I lived. However, I have only lived here a little over a month, so we will see if it continues.
If you want progress, you need to motivate people to open up their own small businesses, specially low income familes and poor people that would get them to work, progress, contribute and employee people within their community. You guys need to teach them about entrepreneurship, going to trades schools, business administration and investment. At the end is a win win for everyone this will help them, the banks, their cities and the state. People will take more loans and contribute more taxes to their cities and state and hire more people. People need guidance, jobs and education to get out of poverty and their current situations poverty only creates more poverty and eventually more crime people need to be busy working and studying.
Dr. Arthur Laffer has a book coming out soon about the inverse relationship between high city taxes and quality of life. I got to talk with him in January and hear an overview. He even used Jackson as an example of some of his assertions.
fondren and highland village are the only "good" parts of jackson. however, you go two or three streets away from fondren and you're in the hood. eastover is fine for now. driving on 220 is the wild west. metrocenter has been closed for years. terry road and hwy80 are both extremely questionable after dark. the food place inside that new building across from st dom closed. state street is questionable. high street is questionable. belhaven/belhaven heights is getting bad. fenian's closed recently. the area around the closed albertson's on ridgewood road is questionable.
Jackson suffers like a lot of older southern cities! The crystal ball is world class public education and safety! Most old southern cities have developed a “Private School “ industry and the population has fled! Same thing in Mobile Alabama. It is so obvious what needs to be done but the population does not have the will to do so so you cities are being hollowed out! When you have a great school system like Madison or Fairhope Alabama you have population growth and and rising real estate values!
Probably wise if you don't know which parts to stay out of. I believe there used to be a feature on some map programs indicating high crime areas but it disappeared due to "political correctness." So if you stumble into a high crime area in some city and get mugged, you can feel better that you didn't avoid that area out of fears for personal safety for which some might question your motives.
Sorry, not enough. If the people want economic investment make it worth our while. First, accept massive buildings without taxes to get capital investment. Second, produce an educated workforce. If we invest 25 billion, we need a workforce able to meet our needs. If the typical blue collar worker wants $15/hr but produces $12/hr it is upside down. Acknowledging the lack of education and work habits, socially policing sloth and exuberance could turn the "south" into the modern silicon valley.
I was born and raised in Jackson. I left to join the Navy in 1979. I try to keep up what's going in Jackson. I have family i just about every town around Jackson. You need a Mayor and city council. That gives a damn about Jackson and the people. That live in the city and not just the color of their skin. You need the citizens to protest the city council and vote them out for incompetence. Jackson is corrupt I understand they voted themselves a raise which would be equal to other capitol cities in the south even though Jackson does not have the population of those other cities. Jackson has the smallest tax base of all the other southern cities. They need to get the water and streets fixed first. Every time I hear the mayor speak he is blaming race. When it's 80% black. It seems to be a recuring theme from Atlanta to Chicago
Many of my black neighbors moved out of Jackson for the same reason as others, better school, lower crime, and lower taxes, along with reliable city services like drinkable water, garbage pickup, and potholes fixed.
Listen, all I know is that your teeth look so dazzling, that they could outshine the radiance of a thousand suns and literally cast a incredible celestial glow upon everyone fortunate enough in Mississippi to bask upon their brilliance! So, what kinna, what brand of toothpaste ya'll use? I wanna look good grinnin' like a possum eatin' sweet taters too.
Live in the horrible horrible state of New Jersey would like to move to a much more laid place like Jackson but by recruiting too many people down there can't it eventually turn into New Jersey?!!
I really love Mississippi, but nothing can compare to the Gulf Coast...beautiful!
The Gulf Coast is beautiful!

Wonderful video! Thank you!
Thanks Hank!!

interesting! sounds like a good read!
Hard to believe one milkshake ended everything for Jackson. There’s no reason other than stubbornness that we can’t be a Happening Capitol.
Milkshake? What am I missing?
Have you heard the State Motto of Mississippi has changed? It's now -
"Thank God for Alabama!"
lol
Interesting...

What a doll
The people need to clean where they live
Agree!! Why won't people take some initiative and clean their own neighborhoods??

you are so right!!
If you can't find a 3rd party to pickup trash , how about you , the city , invest some few millions in a trash pickup dept/service ?
I thought you said this video was about the good things? If I ever have to drive in this area, it makes me want to detour around Jackson lol.

You're not wrong!!

Everybody here where I live Told Jackson is a garbage pit and full of crime and bad environmental issues such a bad water add a ton of poverty

I don't think we'll ever have that problem due to the lack of mass transit and other things like that necessary to make a big city doable.
@@LivinginCentralMississippi thanks!!!
And of course, does she actually live IN Jackson? 🤔
