    I absolutely loved the series and totally understand the sentiment. I drive a L322 because i think it was the most beautiful car made at the time and i just had to get one. Nobody thought it was a good idea, but i bought it anyway and i'm loving it every day. It's a range rover :D

    I have never owned a range rover so I don't know how reliable they are but honestly, what vehicle a person buy is their business... what business is anyone to criticise what anyone buys? We watch this channel because of Andrew's passion. If you don't understand that, why watch this channel?

    I have two 😂😂, 1984 3.5 manual 4 speed, and a 1991 3.9 auto also a 4 speed. The 3.5 isn't even on the road yet, I bought it without an engine and I've been rebuilding it slowly 🤦🏼‍♂️, I love working on these cars, nice hobby for me.

    Yes a new vehicle would be more reliable than an old RRC. But when that new vehicle does eventually go wrong, your screwed. When my old RRC goes wrong (which is not that often), I get the spanners out and I can fix it. For this reason alone I would never buy a modern car. The idea of making myself totally dependant on someone else, just to keep my car running, fills me with fear.

      Agree totally, new has more bells and whistles....more that WILL go wrong. However new cars are built lighter and simply will not hold up over time. I have a '75 Chevy pick up that will still be going long after my more modern vehicles have been sent to the scrap yard

    You can make an unreliable vehicle reliable, but it's bloody hard to give character to a vehicle that has none. Character and nostalgia are great reasons for choosing a vehicle.
    Great series.

    Andrew, I became a Patreon supporter for you because of this series of stories. I have been an avid 4WDer continuously since 1978, owning many brands as I travelled ‘the road(s) less travelled’ all over Australia and some overseas. I had a 1980, white, 2 Door Rangie from 1986-93 that my wife and I used as an ‘overland’ (not that this existed as a term then) vehicle, away for extended periods and travelling tens of thousands of kilometres at a time. The things this vehicle did during these travels, and on my various fishing and hunting adventures still amaze me. Mechanical failures happened; broken engine mounts on the Telegraph Track, being most dramatic and rewarding…not many people around in May ‘83 to help, but the ones we met were classic. Temporary repairs with fencing wire to hold the engine in place; stories around campfires until the RFDS dropped off new mounts; many stories recounted over a lifetime. The RR still remains my 4WD “first love”. As I watched and listened to your evocative stories, memories of my Rangie returned also. Remember, if nothing goes wrong, it wasn’t an adventure! Thank you and please keep up your unique content in an overcrowded, sometimes ‘shouty’, VLOGging world. Cheers, Phil

    Hi Andrew, I have been driving Range Rovers for over 30 years. My current daily is a 4.6 V8 with over 200,000 miles on the clock. Major components have ever been apart, still running on air and totally reliable. Give them the love and maintenance they deserve and require and they won't let you down.

  • @TWX1138
    @TWX1138 3 роки тому +11

    The biggest contradiction I see here in the introduction of the Range Rover took four wheel drives and make them comfortable, but at the same time started the downward spiral where comfort became of increasing importance and thus led to the _need_ to add all those technical helpers in order for the now-compromised vehicles to continue to perform off road.

  • @GeoffreyCroker

    Andrew, I really enjoyed this series. It seemed like the start of the journey was all about replacing your old Range Rover, and as the story progressed it became more and more about this Range Rover.
    Because of the tales you told along the way, I think it’s obvious that the reason you sought to replace your old Range Rover wasn’t because of the car, but because of the adventures you had with the car. And I’m sure, that having shared the experience of crossing Australia with this new Range Rover, it’ll be starting to endear itself to you in the same way.
    An adventure with no obstacles isn’t very adventurous, and maybe the people debating the technicalities of reliability, toyota, etc. are missing the point.
    Anyway - thank you for sharing the adventure. I Iook forward to watching your experience with the Range Rover continue.

    I agree that the Range Rover Classic was iconic. Pretty close to perfectly satisfying a very demanding design challenge, out of the box.
    Reliability also depends on intelligent preparation and maintenance - your experience with your early vehicles has informed your opinions and decisions over a lifetime.
    Thank you for telling your stories.

    I just LOVE your Rant. In 1969 I was a construction site engineer on a twenty Acre site in Eastwood, Derbyshire, UK. We had a huge spoil heap that we only allowed track vehicles on such as bulldozers, D8's. We were contacted by Land Rover, if we would allow them to demonstrate this new prototype vehicle on our spoil heap. We agreed. They came. They drove this vehicle up and over and around this spoil heap to the amazement of the site personnel and the specially invited guests. What a vehicle. Yes, it was the Land Rover Range Rover. I have never had one but if you Love then then you Love them and they certainly do the job. Great videos. I eventually travelled the world on a motorcycle. I had to choose Japaneses because they were RELIABLE but I loved motorbikes.

    I do not understand where people are coming off critiquing you for your purchase of a vintage Range Rover. You do not buy a vintage Land Rover or a Range Rover for modern reliability, comfort, and amenities. No, you buy these vehicles for the experience. You buy them for the nostalgia, the memories, and to carry on the torch of an age of exploration and adventure. So Andrew, have as much fun as humanly possible and keep up the fantastic videos.

    Andrew, What a series of videos! Ive spent the last number of weeks eagerly awaiting the next video and sitting down of a Friday evening with a beer to enjoy each new installment. I myself own a RRC (1990 3.9 Efi) which I absolutely adore. Im 30 years of age and spent a lot of my childhood sat in the passenger seat of my grandads old Range Rovers (of which he had many), driving around the North of England. I think you've really captured the essence of why we own old cars such as this. Its not just the gorgeous aesthetics of the RRC, its the happy memories we have and its that nostalgia which keeps the smile pinned to our faces every time we get in and turn the key. I cant wait to see what you have in store next!

    Andrew - Great series and can't wait to see what the Rangy has in its future.
    I will confess to being a Land rover fan boy, but recently was considering chopping my 110 defender in for a more modern 4x4. This notion lasted until I jumped in a drove it to work. For no rational reason I really like them. Is the bulkhead rusting - yep! Is it underpowered - yep, but I have just remedied that with a remap. Is it a bit cramped in the front and second row - yep. I could go on, but what I love about my Defender is what it offers me and it will without fail put a smile on my face when I drive it.
    I cannot say the same for my wife's Kia - effortless to drive, 7 year warranty blah, blah, blah, but it is in my opinion soulless. For all those Land Rover detractors, come for a spin with me and tell me why I should not own one. I can tell you now that I you will not change my mind, chiefly because it is so noisy in the cab I will not be able to hear you!

I know a guy who owns 3 Defenders, a short wheel base, a bakkie and a station wagon. We often mock him about owning 3 Landies, does he not have enough problems in life to add 3 more on his list? Until one day, when he announced that he is thinking about selling the bakkie. We were 7 or 8 people together, when he announced his thought of selling the bakkie. All of us, like in a choir shouted: Are you mad, have you gone bonkers, let me feel your temperature, you must be feverish, I will sponsor your oil, when did you fall on your head etc. We all convinced him not to sell the Landie. He is the only one amongst the people that were present who owns a Landie(s). There are people who do not own Landies, who also are passionate about them, albeit from a distance. Greetings to you and your loved ones, from a bitterly cold Highveld in South Africa. (-8 degrees C at 5 am today)

    I just want to say "Thank You" for many, many hours of interesting and informative videos, fairly non-biased reviews and best of all, the many stories and adventures you have provided us with over the years. I live in the U.K. and have just bought a 2004 Land Rover Discovery 2 TD5 which I consider to be a well balanced compromise between the Defenders off road ability and the Range Rovers comfort.
    I also consider it the last proper Land Rover Discovery.

    Nicely said Andrew. Some people feel the need to continually remind us of somethings faults rather than the joy and positivity it brings, which can be amusing the first couple of times, but gets very tiresome when they all jump on the same bandwagon. Loved the series, impressed the car made the distance with no problems but especially love the enthusiasm you show for it. Lookin forward to seeing what becomes of this vehicle, no matter what it is.

    Andrew, hearing you talk about how a piece of machinery (albeit a sentimental one) can bring about cherished memories of days gone by has spurred something in my brain. I vividly remember being a young boy when my dad used to own one, an 89 two door Range Rover in blue, we would travel many hours on tarmac and many many hour over rough terrain with a big stupid smile on our faces only to reach our destination and still looking forward to doing it all again in the morning. Thank you for sharing this contagious and effervescent love and passion for Land Rovers, so much so that I've actually re-caught the bug and will be purchasing a Disco 1 or 2. thank you!

    In the US the first vehicle that was an attempt at providing a 4wd with a bit more civility than the jeep of its time was the International Scout first introduced in 1961. International was the first US manufacturer to offer a 5 speed manual transmission. They were fairly innovative. Unfortunately, they hadn't a clue how to market.

    • @philipjooste9075
      @philipjooste9075 3 роки тому

      Indeed, and the Scout was followed by the Jeep Wagoneer in around '62 which was probably the first comfortable family 4x4 with power steering, aircon, auto transmission and 4 doors - a decade earlier than the original Range Rover. What set the RR apart though is its coils all round suspension setup. Talking Scout - the new Bronco looks very similar to the 2nd/3rd generation of the late 70s, more so than to the original Bronco.

    I can add that I bought a Range Rover Sport 2007 for a few thousand dollars. In the last year and a half I only replaced some bushes for a few hundred dollars. I bought my wife a 2015 Audi Q5 for more than twice the price. It does not drive as well on road or off road as my Range Rover. As for Toyota, is there any Prado I could get that can drive like a Supercharged Range Rover for a few thousand dollars - no, you can't, so that is simply not an option. Twice the price is not always good, because believe it or not, old Prados also break, but so far my Range Rover hasn't. For the odd off road drive, there is simply nothing better second hand for the price, both on road or off road.

      I'm not getting into X vs Y brand. All vehicles require intelligent maintenance and appropriate inspection and preparation, taking their age and the intended trip conditions into account.
      I could only afford a 2nd hand 3-litre diesel manual Prado 120 series, while my brother-in-law could afford a 150 series, new. The nickname for the 150 was the "facelift" series because the improvements were largely cosmetics and more electronics. It's the electronics that have given him problems. My maintenance expenditure has been age-appropriate.

    Love a good rant! Social media give's everyone the ability to express their opinion. And thats all it is, an opinion! Stick to your guns Andrew, love your work. Lastly, everyone gets so hung up on brands and put you or themselves in box, i.e. Toyota man, Nissan man, Range Rover lover etc; but at the end of the day its the not vehicle that matters but the memories and stories that you personally associate with it. This series has enabled you to tell some great stories!

    Andrew, there is no reason for you to justify your passion. Just keep going and to hell with the critics. Dont waste time on rants defending yourself, your allowed to do what you want. I wouldnt be seen dead in any of them, but hey, its your adventure and we are glued to the screen.
