On this episode of Tom Talks, we present this beautifully original Ferrari 500 Superfast. This is a very special example and is 1 of only 8 right-hand drive models ever produced and 1 of only 7 left in existence.
Tom sits down with a coffee and explains why these cars are so rare and why this particular example is so special, with a detailed look into its history and a showcase all of its unique 'coachbuilt' features.

400hp, a 5 speed, and disc brakes were all insane in the mid 60's. I bet it feels strong even today
my great uncle had one in gold in the sixties. needless to say it led to a lot of agitation when he came to our poor rural town to collect his debt each month. haha

Great video, thank you. One of my childhood memories is of reading a feature in the AA Drive magazine profiling the seven UK owners of the 500 Superfast. Eric Miller was among them. I remember too that one of them sadly wrote off his car and was killed in a high-speed crash before the magazine went to press. The magazine would make a fascinating addition to this car's history file.
Another fantastic presentation Tom, I really look forward to these videos. You must of had goosebumps going through those letters. Mr Miller has left a great legacy with that Car. Keep up the great work. Atb.

I remember when this was first introduced. My first thoughts were on the price. It was eye watering. I also was not too keen on its overlong boot. I thought it spoilt the overall lines of the car. Great informative video.
Indeed Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands was among the first to buy a Ferrari 500, but in his lifetime between 1953-2004 owned 15 Ferraris, half of these in Dark Green color.

Another fantastic video Tom - you are an absolute pleasure to listen to. Loved seeing the Agnew supplied 993 RS in the background too - my Dad was offered it for £70K when trading in his then 993 Carrera and turned it down after a test drive as he felt it was too harsh for him (which I can understand) and ordered a new 996 instead - isn’t hindsight a wonderful thing!
There's one of these in a barn in Wiltshire.......it's been there for about 35 years. Unmolested, original condition, ready for restoration.

Eric Miller I believe owned Park West Apartments in the Edgware Road in London in the late 60's

Fifty years on and still going, I remember a friend saying that I cost just under fourteen thousand pounds to get one on the road that was at the end of 65 beginning of 66 it was a huge chunk of cash back then, I am sure it will be worth every penny of its price today.
There is an important bi-history between the Ferrari Superfast and the Alfa Superflow, both by Piininfarina made. Each brand made prototypes Mk 1 to Mk 4. The modt important difference was that the Alfas came always ca. 1 year ealier on the stage as the Ferrari prototypes, both aerodynamic progects started in the mid 50's. Knowing the history well it looked very strange too me. It was like as Alfa was financed by the Italian State, the most money for the project came exactly from Alfa. Never ever later a Ferrari was in some way comming as second important in s project. Of course the Alfas had first 4 cylinder and later 6 cylinder. The Alfs Superflow IV.(4) was the last prototype, but also in thid stage the car reached series possibilities, which at Alfa went on with the Alfa modern Spider body which finally came as Duetto or boat tail Spider on the market as series car. Of course a much cheaper 4 cylinder version of what was thought at the very start of the project, but already in the early 50's Alfa after winning the first 2 official F1 titles, and had like Lancia started to leave the market of one-off and small series cars, which was in the first 50 years Alfa terrain, and with the 1900 it started to transform which finally culminated in the Giulietta as first real Alfa "mass-produced" car models(higher numbers hit it better than mass-produced, of course). From all models that went in series after the Superflow, the Alfa Spider boat tail was the one with the most resemblance to the last Superflow, even of course Pininfarina in reality made a modern prototype with a much more aerodynamic body, and thought as successor of the Giulietta/Giulia Spider of the 50/60's, colminating in the 1966 yhrn already in series produced Slfa Spider. Ferrari grew on Alfa's and Lancia's tradition to the only most succesful super sports-car manufacturer ........on the world, till today.
Over 33 years ago a family friend mentioned his (wealthy) London Client that has owned a Ferrari Super-fast.
A gentleman so wealthy that he flew his entire entourage of friends and family to Israel (in a privately chartered airliner) for a birthday celebration. This may well therefore have been the the car that his client owned. Having just read up a brief history of Eric Miller (thanks to Wikipedia) he certainly fits the bill.

Sir Eric Miller, the original owner of the car, was a property developer with social and political ambitions with close links to the Labour Party. Whilst under investigation for fraud and embezzlement from Peachey Property Corporation, the company he chaired, he committed suicide in 1977.
Shunned by his political and society 'friends' at his funeral, he is at least remembered for his exquisite taste in cars, the Ferrari Superfast being the prime example amongst others including a rare rhd 'flat floor' 1961 E-Type Jaguar.
Interesting, I remember Peachey Property, I think Eric Miller received his knighthood as part of Harold Wilson's notorious resignation honours list .......remember Lord Kagan of Gannex mac fame ? I had one as recommended by my school....it was horrible !

Out of interest, according to the BofE cpi calculator, £12k in 1965 equates to £240k today, with inflation averaging 5.6% pa over the last 55yrs. So, perhaps the Superfast was a bit of an expensive bargain when new!

Sir Eric Miller shot himself amid a cloud of financial scandal. One might consider this a "stolen car" due to how the money was obtained to purchase it.
