This Is The Admiral’s Ferrari 500 Mondial

- “Most folks think of Ferraris as 8- or 12- cylinder cars. A 4-cylinder Ferrari is kinda strange to most people. They also don’t realize that the first two Formula 1 World Championships were won with 4-cylinder cars,” says Rear Admiral Robert A. Phillips, USN (Ret.). “There are so few of them…there are three left with the right motors…”
Bought after its racing career had drawn to a close, Admiral Robert Phillips bought the unwanted 1955 Ferrari 500 Mondial Series II by Scaglietti in 1960 for the princely sum of $2,225, or as he puts it, “two-and-a-half MGAs”.
Happiest on-track, these were Ferrari’s early series of privateer cars. It was sent originally to Venezuela, then to the U.S. where it was competitive on its debut at Sebring. By 1959, it had been relocated to a Rambler Dealership, with a seized differential! As it happens, the decision to wipe some dust off of the valve covers would change his life forever.
“Ah, Ferrari-I’ve got to save it!” and with that, Admiral Robert Phillips had spent 2/3 of his salary on a broken Ferrari racing car. And then proceeded to fix it himself, and race, with the car accompanying the Navy family on its many moves over the years. Now, he’s a world-renown expert on the 500/750 Mondial models, after years of research and collecting factory Assembly Data Sheets.

This guy is as much a gem as his vehicle.
It may be a gem to Italy; to the rest of the world it's an undisputed turd.
I agree. He has a nice personality and has storytelling talent. He is well educated and wealthy without a trace of snobbyness.
@@velkovskinikola2 All of that....and NO good taste.
@@michaelmeliambro5117 Back in those days it wasn't.
@@ominous-omnipresent-they Yes; even back then. A '55-'57 T-Bird from the same period would smoke this back in the day.
In less than 8 minutes you've somehow managed to perfectly portray a long-term love affair between a man and his car. Keep up the good work!
Like mister A. Phillips says, I hope the car won't put away in a museum. I'm pretty sure over 50% cars like these are now in garages/museums.
+Lt Col Speirs I think it's more 90%. This car is worth easily $10 million plus, but gladly there are still people like Mr. Philips who use these cars the way they should. I hope he enjoys this magnificent machine for many years to come.
+Lt Col Speirs I'm sure a majority of the people that own cars like these are using them as investments to make money in the future. They don't want to damage the value of the vehicle or possibly even wreck their investment. Although enjoyment can be had by looking at a beautiful machine they should really be driven.
Chad Andersen You've nailed it. When you treat a car like an investment, it loses it's purpose. You may hang a Picasso painting on your wall and admire it, but with cars, the only way to enjoy it is driving the thing. Not keeping it on a garage. That is why it's so refreshing to know that owners like Mr. Philips still exist and use these beautiful machines as intended.
+Lt Col Speirs I feel sorry for tomorrow children, they might never be able to see a car like this in use.
Alot of these cars will end upp i garages, stored for the future and not for use.
I would use a car like this alot! :)
People need to see them and enjoy the sound!
+Lt Col Speirs
I'd be delighted and honored to give it a loving and stimulating home life.
El Almirante Phillips! Your amazing car won its class at the '55 Venezuelan GP and I remember my father telling me all about the three GP ('55-'56-'57) that took place in our native Caracas, Venezuela. I want to thank your family for supporting your love and passion for such beautiful car. Ohhh the twinkle in your eye for #8 is evident from the moment you unhook it from the trailer, to later tightening the wheel spindle to finally sitting behind the wheel and looking at your gauges as you warm it up! Thank you Admiral Phillips for making this about your emotional connection with the car and not about the money! We need more of you! Last...thank you Petrolicious. Not an easy task to convey the love, passion and dedication some of us have towards an automobile or motorcycle in a video lasting less than 10 minutes. You do this Masterfully!! Until next Tuesday!
Juan Jose Escalante 😢
if only 4 cylinder engines sounded this good today
+billy32
it's a race car and they are a lot of good sounding 4zylinders race engines out there.
+billy32 i personally love the sound of the Alfa Romeo 4C
It sounds slightly s2000-ey at certain revs
And I could make a video of my Speed3 that would put the dudes 2.0 to shame.
+billy32 Clearly you've never heard a 4AGE motor.
Beautiful car and Beautiful video. So nice to see a car like that being driven.
Wife 'you and car are both senior citizens', beautiful and brilliant!
This Man is a great Human. Seems like such a gentile soul. Owning and loving such a rare Auto gives him a twinkle in hie eyes that can only be gotten from what you know is special.
That's a beautiful car which has a great owner
I'll admit, I never knew Ferrari had a 4 cylinder.
+Ali Ahadi Me neither. I had beed told that they used modified Fiat engines. You live, you learn.
+ZeroneAngel Actually Ferrari started with customised Alfa Romeos after leaving the Alfa factory race team.
+Ducati Kozak I guess that is what the person was talking about. But he said Fiat-engines. Still, wrong on both accounts in this case.
ZeroneAngel As an Alfa owner, I take exception to the substitution of Fiat for Alfa. Especially when referring to Alfa & Fiat of that era before the takeover. Glad to set you straight :)
+Ducati Kozak Hehe. Thanks m8. You live, you learn.
Why can't my Honda 4 cylinder sound this wonderful?
You here? ;)
+Lazy Game Reviews small displacement high revs for a Honda engine, more efficient, modern.
+Lazy Game Reviews it actually comes down to the firing order of the your cylinders if you can change the firing order with out sacfricing something then yes it would be possible
Type R Honda's sound wonderful. Different, but wonderful all the same.
Why hello lgr
Whoever is filming these videos is doing an absolutely incredible job. I have enjoyed watching every one of them to the point that they have inspired me to do some really great oil paintings of the cars themselves. I am also former United States Navy so that added to the interest. Keep making them because I believe I speak for thousands of people when I say you are doing an incredible job to keep and maintain not only the beauty and engineering of the cars, but also the owners and their descriptive histories. Great work.
What a beautiful car and an amazing owner that realizes that these wonderful machines need to be driven to be fully appreciated.
He took good care of it very well and he is so nice
"It's only a machine I should be able to take it apart figure out what's broken fix that and put it back together" I don't know why but that hit me hard. I've always had that mentality towards fixing broken machines. And that advice also works great when it comes to dealing with LIFE.
Good for you Admiral and thanks to Petrolicious. A wonderful car, a passionate and true enthusiast who understands what this Ferrari means. Just brilliant.
1950s Ferraris have the best designs, imo. The definition of art on wheels.
Go Speed Racer, Go Speed Racer, Gooo!.. Speed Racer is a bit older now but he's still a demon on wheels.
+(O=[][]=O) His eyes changed though.
A great story Mr Phillips and thats a really lovely job you have done there.
Awesome car and love the attitude "it needs and wants to be driven".
To own your dream car for 50 years! What an achievement.
Actually it is now over 57 years
What a cool dude. The older folk who are into cars are some of the best car guys out there.
What a beautiful car! Respect that he is driving it instead of putting it in a museum.
Enzo Ferrari and his team had the magic touch.. if they can make a 4-cyl sound good, i bet they could also make a 2.3L ecoBoost sound amazing lol
i LOVE the sound
I salute you sir! What a wonderful video, and a stunning car.
The joy on his face at 6:37 says everything about his love for his wife and his love for the car. Lucky guy!
Awesome video guys! Just found your channel and it's extremely inspiring! Videos like these make me want to push harder and harder to become a successful film maker!
Today I've met an awesome girl...but when i look at this car... OH MY GOD!
The Admiral's wife: "You and the car are both senior citizens...take it easy!" The lady's a gas xD
I would like to congratulate the team Petrolicious the incredible work you have been published on UA-cam, it is undoubtedly the best car channel that I had the opportunity to see / subscribe. THANKS!
Notice how no one gives a crap about 0-60 etc. That would be like judging a work of art by how much the paint weighs. Interesting what he is saying about double clutch shifting on the way down and how much harder it is to do when driving on the street versus the track.
GTR fans be like: my imaginary Alpha Omega Beta, bla, bla GTR will destroy this car, GTR rulezzzz! :))) awesome video, thanks!
no one said that...you are more annoying than the gtr guys
Ok Posterior Crevice
Trujillo was president of the Dominican Republic. Porfirio Rubirosa was Dominican and raced that car in Sebring and some other Ferraris at Le Mans
+Victor Gonzalez Sorry but I meant Jimenez, chalk it up to another senior moment.
+Victor Gonzalez Una parte de mi murió cuando escuche eso.
+Leandro Diaz Entiendo su sensación. Después de 56 años todavía lo ama!
Roberto
+Tlb Car que bueno encontrar otro que tambien.
Wow thats amazing
I love this car so much it's so beautiful most beautiful car ever
The sports cars of the 1950 decade were the most beautiful; Ferarri, Maserati, Alfa Romero, Mercedes, Jaguar, Aston Martin ... I don't think they've ever been surpassed.
Fully agree!
“ Born to be driven “
A mantra every high end car owner oughta keep in mind.
This guy is the man.
Best sounding 4 cylinder I've heard .. ever.
MAGNIFICENT
I would rub my hands all over it like it’s Sofia Loren! One of my favorite cars of all time the end!!!
Stunning car, sooo beautiful, and an amazing owner and story.
The admiral Ferrari Mondial 500, so gorgeous, beauty, design, prestige, iconic, masterpiece, Scuderia Ferrari
Jay Leno's show brought me here: ua-cam.com/video/ibqZCt5Snow/v-deo.html This video, especially the production values, editing, audio, is magnificent.
This is probably one of the best videos you guys have done!
"My wife said: "Renember, you and the car are both senior citizens, you don't have anything left to prove, take it easy.""
xD that was a goooood one
***Wow there's somethings in life where there aren't really words more of a look when what we do is art and our passions when our paths cross. Truly wish one day to be able moments like this to be pasted on in what is known but not known is the car familyaybe not by birth from same family but it's in our blood. However I do bring houses back from being bulldozed to families now calling it home the best they have seen in poorly sad neighborhoods with little hope. The entire blocks come to life just by our activities. Now I wish this would bring me and my son together. Possible dreams anyways very nice sir, have a blessed night always give him the credit. Keep up the good job please never sell or put in a museum. Best $2000 and change ever spent you bought a life time of dreams. Me and my son are looking for our $2000 and change dream also GN.***
I like to think my grandfather was like this gentleman. My grandfather was a Major in the army airforce where he taught pilots how to fly gliders and then I believe maybe fighters jets also. Never had the honor to meet the man. Knowing my grandmother she would have not settled for anything less in a person.
Wow….I live about 5 minutes from Lunken airport. I’ve seen other articles about this marvelous car, but never knew it’s Cincinnati connection!
Awesome car and what a cool guy. His laugh haha
Two things I learned - He loves this car - and he loves his Wife
You must know that I kept my favorite chassis...the car went elsewhere!
It has to be said.
Every and all Ferraris should be light blue (or white).
This car is jawdroppingly gorgeous.
Great Man and a Great Car, Thank you for sharing just a wonderful story
What a guy, what a car, what a story.
very cool video!
Look at this man's smile and laughter, now THAT is what it's ALL about.
Wow; this video is so awesome and nicely made! I admire Mr Phillips philosophy about that amazing car and how he still uses it for what it's made for. Love the quote "It likes to be driven, it needs to be driven, it was born to be driven". My thought exactly and it's great to know there are people still doing this. So cool that he actually does this and also drives it on track... What so great about it, is the fact that he actually bought the car for the love of the car and to drive it. He did not buy it for the future value or investment that nowadays someone would buy it...
Respect to the Admiral and his fantastic racecar....one day when I'm older I will be that guy......still driving and enjoying my old sportcar ;)
I probably could not afford his helmet....
The engine sound is beautiful !!!
Great car and story!
Thanks for the video's Petrolicious!
Found myself welling up inside for this man and his machine as such candor, elegance, and sophistication equally reflecting back on one another is deeply moving.
Thanks Robert; thanks Enzo.
You sir! I salute you! Thanks for sharing your beautiful car with us!
Even Ferrari 4cylinder engines sound fantastic
This is the first and last car anyone would ever need.
a true gentleman of another time....his full life is more valuable than this car will ever be
I, m happy seeing the car owned by a wonderful man who knows what the car are for. And one day when the time come for him to pass it his successor i, ll hope it would be a kind person who loved the car as it would meant to be.
My God that is a BEAUTIFUL car.
Thats like when people say they keep the miles down on their cars . My 350z is a car, it's meant to be driven . I drive it everyday! Rain / shine / or even snow .
Beautiful car, a Salute to you Sir! Infantry here.
I salute you, Admiral.
What a beautiful car! Respect that he is driving it instead of putting it in a museum.
From '55. Car looks like it was made yesterday
This is still my favorite petrolicous video
Love it...! Forza Ferrari
Great guy, he has kept that Ferrari looking and sounding amazing, respect.
Thank you.
Beyond words......
Thank you!
Most beautiful blue Ferrari I’ve seen
Fantastic Man~Stunning car~I love his wife telling him "Now you and the car are seinor citizens so you have nothing left to prove" Truly a good hearted woman~Thank you so much for sharing your car with us and it's wonderful history~And Thank you for your service :))
Thank you for your support, and yes she is a gem!
Jay Leno did a feature on the Admiral and this gorgeous beast as well.
Title: “1955 Ferrari 500 Mondial Series II - Jay Leno’s Garage”
Thank you, Petrolicious, for documenting this fine man’s passion.
hands down the best UA-cam Channel for car videos, just wish they were longer. This video is future classick!
Stan Arnolt told me about hitting the Ferrari. He said it was an unfair match because the Arnolt Bristols had steel bodies. He felt bad about the accident, but since the Ferrari spun out in front of him it was unavoidable. Those were interesting times.
And the man who is enjoying the car and living the dream not left in a collection brilliant thanks for the video awesome to watch
Cecil, you might also like: ua-cam.com/video/ibqZCt5Snow/v-deo.html

What can i say for this VIDEO; What can i say for this unique FERRARI 4-cylinder 500 MONDIAL;
UNIQUE! MARVELOUS! EXTRAORDINARY! AWESOME! Thank you PETROLICIOUS for this video.
Thank you ROBERT PHILLIPS for this UNIQUE CAR. THANK YOU ENZO FOR YOUR DREAMS.
Piece of art and history!
Holy fuck... I looked up what the Ferrari 500 Mondial Spyder sells for ... 2-3.5 million dollars......$$$$$$
A beautiful story!
i love it... one dream for a lot people... the design is incomparable... italian made... Beautifull movie friends
Trujillo was a dictator of the Dominican Republic, not Venezuela, from 1930 to 1961
Good evening, there is a short movie of the I GP of Venezuela, of 1955, where this Ferrari Mondial was raced by Eugenio Castellotti and Harry Schell, the car is hard to spot, but you can get an idea of the racing atmosphere in those day.
You have to search in You Tube for I GP Venezuela 1955 - Los Proceres 6-Nov 55 since I cannot paste the link here.
What a beautiful machine
It was Born to be Driven!
"It`s only a machine, I should be able to take it apart, fix what`s wrong, and put it back together"
I wish modern car manufacturers thought like that..
There have been some incredible and inspiring videos on this channel but somehow this one fills me with more joy than any. Maybe it's the colour, maybe the sound. Whatever it's something special indeed.
My two favorite Ferrari's. This Ferrari 500 Mondial and Peter Giacobbi's hand-made 1959 Ferrari 250 TR. Thanks for the video.
I saw 3 of these cars being raced at Watkins Glen in 1957 (Google it). Gaston Andrey was owner /driver of one of them -he was listed as Swiss. I have 8mm movies of one of them with the hood off-amazing engine. Nobody would believe me about the 4 cyl Ferraris I saw!
Finally have proof. Beautiful cars.
I met this man displaying the Mondial at a concours, he was very friendly and down to earth, I enjoyed talking to him about the car
Absolutely beautiful car and a contented soul.
Charles, right on both counts!
Abolute beautiful racing car, love that you you drive it instead of hybernating in some museum, great buy Admiral!
What's up with Americans and their army fetish. "Rear Admiral Robert A. Philips, USN (Ret.). Retired. So he's just Robert A. Philips now thank you very much. Nice car though
+V-twin Kevin its quite an achievement to be an Admiral, its not even an american thing its a general military thing...
+V-twin Kevin I've talked to him for over a hour about this car when he brought it to our local cars and coffee, and I never even knew he was an Admiral until now. He is the most down to earth guy you could ever meet. Even in his 80s he was crawling around on the ground showing me things under the car.
You're always ex forces or a veteran, you never become a civilian again.
It's out of respect for the people who gave their lives to this country. I'm sorry you're from a lesser country Merica still loves you
A well put-together and slick film of a beautiful car and it's wonderful owner. The Admiral and the Ferrari were invited onto Jay Leno's channel in 2018 where he told the story of the car in full, and what a story that was! He later sold the car for over $5,000,000. Here is the link to the Jay Leno programme... ua-cam.com/video/ibqZCt5Snow/v-deo.html&frags=wn
Top marks. Excellent owner. Excellent car. And an excellent film clip. All that double clutching, I would never cope, my MR2 doesn't even have a clutch!
Been looking for a good feature on a 4 cylinder Ferrari for years, I didn't expect anything this AWESOME, though!
