- Welcome to Schony747 trams on a Saturday featuring Yarra Trams Camberwell Tram Depot here in Melbourne.
Recently I spent my usual two week stint at Camberwell Tram Depot to help out with the Australian Open Tennis and I filmed and produced this short video about the depot and some of the history. The depot opened in December 1929 and has a few features that the other Melbourne Tram Depots do not have. It's back to Southbank which is my home depot in a week or so and I plan to produce a similar video there as well.

My favourite tram is the first articulated ones in Melbourne, used to always wait for one and do a round trip and back from St Kilda Beach, pies were cheap at the Acland Street shops back then, not so today, "upmarket" pricing these days, oh well! Nice clean depot too, great tour. Thank you Brenden, great clip.
The B2 is still one of my favourites as well. It's simple technology and comfortable to drive as well.

In my days as a kid until 1980 we lived in Camberwell road a few hunderd metres from the tram depot. I was a nice place for me at that time because of all the action there. I also saw the coming of the frist Z Class trams in 1977 when the Burwood line was extend and changed from route 74 to 75. A short time later die Camberwell trams on route 72 changed back to Malvern depot. The tram route 72 was at frist route 7 and was located until 1970 at Malvern depot before it changed to Camberwell and became route 72.
I saw the number 7 in old photos. I always thought it was Malvern Town Hall. Thanks for sharing the info.
As a kid I remember my mum got lost after shopping ended up driving through past the Depot where the trams come out onto riversdale road 😂

I was going to say that the B2 trams sound just like the Duewag trams in Oslo, Norway. And then I read on Wikipedia that they have Duewag bogies and Siemens controls. So they have the same internals as the Norwegian ones. And that is why they have the same sound. 😁
And one of the best trams every built for Melbourne as well
Ahhh, the Schony747 video type I enjoy so very much, indeed! The two-truck/bogey trams shown are my favorite class, as they still look like a proper tram/streetcar to me (even with the fancy sloped windshields). The difference in terminology is quite interesting. The depot/carbarn "roads" would just be called tracks or storage tracks over here in the US. I wonder how "road" came to be used down there. As usual, thanks so much for making these videos. Cheers from Wisconsin.

Very interesting to see these videos about the trams and the trips you have filmed, just out of curiosity what would the oldest set of trams currently operating on the network
There are two answers depending on your interpretation - Z3 116 entered service in 1979. Aside from being life extended so it can stay in service longer, the tram is as built back then. W8 Tram on the City Circle entered service June 1940 but has had a complete rebuild even down to new motors and driver controls.
I am a retired Sydney bus driver and find this fascinating with some similarities to the operation of a bus depot. I am intrigued to know that after the tram is directed to the required road, who sets the points, is it the driver or is it the "shed driver." I don't know if this is a term for trams but the buses are directed by this person who also allocates the road. The "bang" road is referred to as "rotten road" for the buses. I noticed that there is no workshop or pit roads so where do the trams receive maintenance? Do you apply to be used at other depots or can you be "loaned " without notice as happens in some Sydney bus depots? Sorry for all the questions and I do enjoy your videos and I am looking forward to the next one.
The workshops are at Preston. There might be a small one at the new depot at Southbank. I’ve seen drivers move their own points in the depot.

The road number is on the board as you enter the depot from Riversdale Road. The driver manually changes the points as the points to enter the shed are manual operation. 7 to 9 roads are the pit roads in the shed where maintenance is undertaken. The pit roads used to come to the top of the shed but some were filled in.
Yarra Trams actually washes their trams these days?
Every weekday at least 6 trams per depot are washed
They should wash this tram at 0:33 (ik it's already washed but it needs a wash in this video)

These trams the A Class comed out in 1984. You ride in 1981 was on a Z Class tram. The frist Z Class trams came out in 1974 (Z1). The last ones (Z3) started in 1983.

Enjoyed it immensely, WHY do you need to put the 'tram' on the 2nd road to wash it, is it because it is done by hand and not a machine. What was the loud, (yap noise at the beginning and end for), or did you have a 'four legged' friend we didn't see. Our lot they just drive them out the depot, park by a convenient drain and "attack" them with a pressure washer and long handled brush.
It's all done by hand at Camberwell and the drainage system on two road is set up for washing trams. It's a great depot to work out of as well
@@Schony747 Thanks for the reply. Judging by the comment from "S.M.G." is it more of a habit not to wash the trams of Melbourne. Do you drive any going by your comment.?
