  • Welcome to Schony747 trams on Saturday. If you like the video and Schony747 channel content, hit like and the bell for regular weekly train, plane and tram updates.
    Today the video focuses on recent scenes across the Yarra Trams Melbourne Network that in my opinion you are unlikely to see again - at least in the forseeable future.
    1 - Bombardier E Class Testing network wide on other routes. In this scene, the E class is filmed at Airport West and the former Gardiner Railway Station Rail Square.
    2 - Siemens Combino Trams on route 96. Combino D2 trams and on the odd occasion the smaller D1 variety run on route 96 from 2004 until 2015. Will the Combino ever appear on route 96 again? Check out the Nicholson St drivers view in a Combino route tram route 96.
    3 - Route 11 and 86 trams running in and out of East Preston Tram Depot. The depot still functions as the tram life extension site after closing as an operational depot in 2016. Check out the drivers view from 2011 running into East Preston.
    4 - Yellow Citadis C2 Bumblebee Trams. The trams were trams leased from France and delivered in The Yellow Mulhouse Livery in 2008. The 5 trams were repainted into the white PTV livery when the Victorian Government purchased the trams outright from France.
    5 - E Class running as a coupled set. A test took place n 2014 to demonstrate that two E class trams could successfully operate with each other once coupled up together. The demonstration test was a success. Whether the trams will run in actual passenger service remains to be seen.
    6 - North Fitzroy Tram Depot being used as an operation tram depot. Considering the tracks linking the depot to the tram route 96 mainline have been removed, the depot will now probably remain closed for good. In this scene, City Circle Trams can be seen using the depot as an operational base back in 2011.
    Have a great weekend and feel free to leave comments - Brenden S.

    A sign at the Glenhuntly Tram Depot says something like, "E class trams for all Melburnians."
    Well, that is surely a joke 'cause all Route 67 gets, is the cast offs from other routes. I'm sure nothing running on 67 is younger than 25 years old.

      Glenhuntly has more air conditioned B2 class tram which is still generally regarded as the best tram ever built for Melbourne and still the most comfortable. We all suffer with non air-conditioning trams.

    One of the benefits of recording railway and tramway history is that there are often unexpected 'side effects'. For instance, in the first scene, you show a Tullamarine Freeway (CityLink) that's almost certainly busier than it is at the same time and day of the week in August 2020 due to the infamous lockdown/curfew and five km travel restriction (the latter not for permitted workers, but even so, having a marked downwards effect on total road kilometres travelled per day).
    Good on you, even though I and many others are worried that our mass transit may not carry the numbers it used to for a few years, or perhaps ever again. Time will tell.

    • @Schony747
      @Schony747  3 роки тому

      Numbers are very low on every mode of transport at the moment. Numbers on PT will come back but I suspect not to the levels we have been used to for a number of years

      @@Schony747 I reckon you're correct. It'll differ between nations and cities, but in UK, the franchised long distance rail operators - a bit different from city commuters in its task - say patronage will take five years to recover. It had been doing very well.

    I have questions. When a new model tram is put in service and there is a cascade of older models to new depots (or carbarns as we say over here), do the experienced mechanics for a model follow it to the new depot, or do they just learn to repair the model that is new to their current depot? Just how different are the various models from each other mechanically and electrically? Is learning the ins and outs of a new model all that big a deal to experienced maintainers, or does it take some training? As usual, thanks for this video. Cheers from Wisconsin.

    • @edmundcarew7235

      Melbourne's trams were not all built by the same manufacturer: of the modern aircon trams, there are many from Bombardier (including the E/E2 classes) and Siemens, and lower numbers from Alstom. The nonaircon trams in some cases were built by Preston Workshops in Melbourne (the B2 class, in my view the best trams in Melbourne) under government ownership. So at least with the recent designs, if I'm not mistaken, there tend to be 'build and maintain' models used in contracts to ensure the trams can be properly maintained.

    • @Schony747
      @Schony747  3 роки тому +2

      I'm on holidays so sorry for the late reply. The high floor fleet is easy as all trams have very similar maintenance models. E class are maintained at both Southbank and Preston. Most of the Combino work is undertaken at Malvern, C1 at Kew, C2 at Sk
      Southbank a W8 at Southbank. Mechanics move between depots on a rotation basis and therefore get experience dealing with most classes of trams.

    I wonder if there is another depot space to cater for the expansion and renewal of the fleet. I'm kind of on the opinion that there needs to be additional new depots. Perhaps one in Airport West and somewhere in Vermont or Know if the 75 is extended.
    Impressed to see the coupled E-class too. Shame that won't be seen in the foreseeable future.

    • @edmundcarew7235
      @edmundcarew7235 3 роки тому

      You raise an important point, as a few years ago IIRC Kew Depot was ruled out for one new class for that reason. However again from memory, there've been minor changes at for instance Southbank such as (sadly) ridding Melbourne of its much loved 'restaurant trams that, whether by hook or crook, marginally increased stabling space.

    • @Schony747
      @Schony747  3 роки тому

      Brunswick Depot is being extended. I'm sure there are other long term plans that I'm not aware of. I don't think there's any room to extend any other depot.

      @@Schony747 Because of its circuitous nature, length and the number of painful shopping strips it passes through in 'normal' times when idiot motorists hold trams up by waiting for a street parking space to become available? Plus sudden U-turns right in front of a Z3?

    Just to confirm, that the Victorian State Government now owns all of the tram rolling stock and is leased back to the franchisee - currently Keolis Downer to operate the network under the Yarra Trams brand. Does the State government own the 'Yarra Trams' brand? Who own the overhead and power distribution infrastructure? I guess that Transfield Services is contracted to maintain the overhead. I know that Victrack owns and maintains the tram track infrastructure.

    • @Schony747
      @Schony747  3 роки тому +1

      My understanding is Keolis have a franchise contract to run the tram system. All Yarra Trams names and trademarks are the property of the Government which is used under the franchise agreement. All rolling stock and assets are owned by Victrack.

    as a car driver and a tram driver, what is your opinion of platform stops compared to safety zones?

    • @Schony747
      @Schony747  3 роки тому +2

      Platform stops that are separated from cars are alot safer for pedestrians. The raised stop where peoole still have to walk across the road to get the tram is safer than the traditional curb side stops but still have the risk of cars passing the tram. Safety zones were useful but are not large enough and provide no shelter for passengers. So in general platform stops have been a good thing for passengers.

      @@vsvnrg3263 As a tram patron, one disadvantage of platform stops can be narrow permitted exits. The classic (pre-coronavirus, when the network carried more passengers) was (and is) in Bourke St, Melbourne at the corner of Spencer Street where passengers alighting on routes 86 and 96 who wanted to walk across Spencer St to Southern Cross station must wait in a narrow space, yet Bourke St there is not very busy with cars or delivery vehicles, so it'd be much better if we could just cross the road immediately without having to wait for the lights to change.
