As a kid I went camping with a shower curtain for my tent, and just an old Barlow knife. We didn’t realize back then that we were doing “bushcrafting” wrong. We just called it having fun in the woods.
When I got out of the Army, discovered that my nice five-year-old double mantle Coleman lantern hadn't made it home with me. Wanted to take the kids fishing, stopped by a flea market outside Lubbock. There was an old single mantle 'little red Coleman lantern' from the '60's, no glass but it held pressure. Bought a new globe from a hardware store. The lantern cost $5, new globe was $8. That was in '92, it's still going strong. The little store is long gone, though. Long time subscriber.
As a youngster I slept on the ground by a fire in the Louisiana swamps and thought nothing of it. No telling what crawlers got on me during the night. I lived through it. I’ve lost that courage somehow. I am not afraid to admit. I would never have the courage to sleep on the ground in Arizona. I’ve seen centipedes as big as snakes there. This was a very enjoyable video. I’m glad that I have become a subscriber. Take care.
Ya all went super fancy with the thrift store finds and totally over the top with the fancy brioche hot dog buns!🤓😉🤣❤️ya always make me laugh and love your videos brothers and love Cuervo negro’s beautiful melodic creations.❤️I listen on the road and helps me deal with the crazies.
I still have my red 1960’s Coleman lantern and it still works fine. Iam 63 and am returning to my roots using simpler cheaper tools for outdooors . Started camping in my teens with a tarp ( wish I still had it) sleeping on the ground with snakes everywhere but no worries when you are a teen. Maybe a sleeping bag. Did not knows brands then or cared. Iam sure an inexpensive flashlight along w cooking a can of beanie weenies over the fire. Such simpler times and I miss it . Cheers to all !
I still do it too! Just grab some grub on the way out of town n see what's in my truck for gear when I get "somewhere". There's usually a tarp n blankets of some sort and pot and pan in my truck at least a coffee pot!
Got a Wool Pendelton flannel shirt for 3 bucks at a thrift store 20 years ago, still have it.drizzle cold water on top of the coffee, the grounds will sink to the bottom.Burnt tortillas de maiz, broken up into coffee is Absolutely amazing.Speaking of amazing,Cuervo Negro educated the spirits out there,Cheers you guy's!
I love this video concept ❤ Most of the gear shown in camping vids adds up to hundreds of dollars. I have postponed adventuring because I didn't think I had the "right" kind of gear. This shows you don't need the newest and coolest stuff to go out and have fun. You should do more of these in the future. Thanks guys!
Thanks for coming to AZ! We love having you here. I am still very proud of you for getting out there, even under challenges like the accident. Im proud of you for facing everything with grace and faith. There are so few channels like yours. Really, none are like this. ALSO thsnk u quervo for your music and sharing it with the world. Praise God for good folks. You have no idea how much yall cheer me up sometimes when I can't get out there.
Good to see Cuervo with you! Love his tunes! Looked like a nice thrift store adventure, seems like you guys hit some good thrift stores, I live here in the valley also and I go thrift store shopping a lot! The best things I found at a thrift store is my cook ware and my grill, they are normally in my ride all the time. Good video James and Cuervo, have a good one!
I love these kinds of videos. Thrift store, dollar store, whatever. Just the attempt at improvising and making do without thousands of dollars of gear or being totally familiar with what you have.
The best Goodwill find I made was yesterday. I needed a backpack and I got one for 10.00 then not knowing anything about the roll top I searched UA-cam and followed up with Amazon. Its a Aquaquest 30 L selling for 99.00 plus shipping in brand new condition 😊 I usually donate to them an on a lark after my donation I decided to go inside...great decision
Flew to Phoenix 15 years ago & picked up a few essentials at a thrift store before heading to Grand Canyon- Small expresso pot, plates, silverware, fry pan, 1 qt pot for heating water, still use the e presso pot & the 1 quart pot. Dont need fancy gear to enjoy nature. Good on you for promoting Simple choices in life. Blessings Hope your recovery is progressing smoothly.❤
I laughed so hard about the buns & regular poor people hotdogs comment ... for a minute there I thought you were secretly FANCY when you broke out the brioche 😂😂😂
James👍👍Everything was going just fine until you and Cuervo started munching down those campfire brats.. I had to halt watching, get the grill going and throw on a ribeye w/pepperjack cheese and green chili, asparagus and baby potatoes. It's all good now, finishing up the video with a Macallan 15yr in hand😉 Midnight lullaby's by the fire..perfect, Cuervo has been sorely missed. Good morning meal and coffee rounds out a great camp, thanks for the work and trip, well done as always. See you soon bros...
Proof: you need not spend a fortune to practice outdoor skills, have some fun and be better prepared for an emergency or a bad situation. Here in the Philippines, our UKAY-UKAY (second hand ) shops stock mostly pre-owned clothing. We were fortunate for a long time when my Brother-in-law was attending many auctions to purchase stock for his reselling business. He won the bid on many great items from Japan. Two brand new sleeping bags, a full case of NIB (New In Box) high quality rechargeable + hand crank radios and a wide assortment of new and like new camping and outdoor gear.
My fondest memory of camping was when my dad would take my brother and I quail hunting. It usually fell on a school day, but my dad would drive us out into the Arizona desert the night before opening day in his 1934 Ford pickup ("Rocky"). We would cook our supper over a wood fire, then sleep in the bed of "Rocky" with my dad in the middle and my brother and I on either side of him. We would wake up early enough to cook breakfast over the fire and then be ready for the sun to rise to start our quail hunt. My dad would then dive us to school and drop us often in a enough time to not be late. I was about 10 and my brother was 7, (65 yrs. ago) so this was a very exiting time for us.
Thanks James, I really enjoy your videos. You and Cuervo Negro come across as down-to-earth guys, that are unpretentious and humble. Watching your videos is like a breath of fresh air compared to so many of the current outdoor videos that feature vehicles, cooking systems, gear & battery setups that only the well-to-do can afford. Camping shouldn't be a "competive sport". This video proves it is more about getting out and enjoying nature.
This is a great video James nice fire nice music .. you don't have to best gear to go get your boots dirty go have fun. thanks for Great camp . Till next god bless
One of these days you are going to stick your foot into a boot and find a very angry scorpion or other critter. Always check the boots for occupants first.
Looks like fun. I had the idea of a dollar store challenge myself, but after seeing lots of people had done it, I never did. Oh, and some thrift stores DO have food; bread, eggs, canned goods, pasta, etc. Just watch the expiration dates. I have found lots of great stuff at thrift stores! Got a sleeping bag for $2 once that I keep in my truck for emergencies. I' sure if I went through my gear I would find many things of the same origin.
Like this idea a lot camp on the cheap. Here in PalmSprings, California we find a lot in the thrift stores Best was an Arc'teryx jacket and a lot of Columbia gear. Stay safe my friend
I love desert camping. Originally from the Midwest, we camped a lot in Michigan, all 4 seasons. I loved winter camping the best. Desert camping is so different, different woods, wide open skies, and coyotes to serenade you at night. Great video, guys. If you had a bit of mustard for the sausages, that would have topped it off nicely!
Enamel can go on coals and even in the fire. You should try it, the main problem with enamel is the thermal shock of quick heating/cooling where the metal and the glass heats unevenly. Not putting it on the hottest part you're certainly able to boil a cup of water in it. Try it, it's likely to work. With the caveat that the mug probably isn't very good enamel of course.
Great video. Cuervo voice is very good! Watch those hands so close to the fire …couple of times I thought you were too close ! Best, Mike Georgetown , TX
I was just 4 months old when my parents went camping back in 1974. All the gear was from thrift stores. An old army surplus tent and cooked over the fire. The majority of my current camping gear is either from thrift stores or passed down from my parents
Great video, my brothers and I used our dad’s and uncle’s WWII packs, canteens, mess kits and GI mummy sleeping bags and went out camping all over the south eastern part of AZ. You brought back great memories, thanks
Love your music, your guitar playing Cuervo 👍 I had to watch this video again for a second time I fell asleep the first time I was watching it when it first came out the other day. I had been up since 4 AM that morning. . We Enjoy your videos
Great video! Love the idea of doing a thrift store challenge for camping supplies. Y’all were inspiring. I especially loved Cuervo Negro’s music and his voice! Looking forward to more videos!
Would be cool to see an emergency fishing kit challenge. One homemade and one premade from Amazon or I saw one on Tuff Possum Gear. Also Yesterday’s Jalapeño would make a great song title 🤣
I happen to work for Goodwill here in San Antonio. Over the years ive gotten- Pelican cases, S&W m9 bayonet, Action packer tote, lightfighter tent. We are surrounded by military bases so theres always good outdoor gear coming through
Great video, fellas. James' face after that first bite of the breakfast jalapeno 😂 the man suffers for these videos but the end result is undeniably great! Thanks for your efforts, respect from San Marcos, TX

Everytime I watch you guys make coffee I just wish you'd get a goodwill French press for coffee. I see them all the time for like 6 bucks with 50% off so 3 bucks.. No more cowboy coffee with grounds in your cup for 3 bucks. Lol
Corporal's corner sent me here. This seemed like a great video to start, and it didn't disappoint. I loved it. Looking forward to more from you. Hope you get more subs for when you get back to 100%. I'll enjoy your old content in the meantime.
Thank you, Cuervo, for an old John Hartford song. Fond memories of tome gone by. Great video, guys. Reminds me of camping in the rain on Copperhead Hill. All we had was an old shelter half and a Barlow knife and old hatchet. We had a blast.
Just getting into some of your video's, love the thrift store challenges! I was at a classic car swap meet this spring and found a 🦋 Benchmade 🦋 mini griptillian for $5 lol.. I sent it into Benchmade for the spa treatment and some confirmation that it wasnt a knock off! Great little knife just goes to show you never know what you will find! Really enjoyed seeing Cuervo with you and really enjoyed his picking and singing! Great job guys!
Those buns are called split tops for brats and other larger sausages. Take into account that I am from Ohio so they maybe called something else in Arizona.

If you had fun you did it right.
