James I really enjoyed the video. I don't usually watch a video that long but you kept my interest the whole way. Lot's of good tips. I especially enjoyed the knife sheath. That is a thing of beauty. Certainly a keeper. If you can do all of that with ten bucks worth of gear then I can surely do it with my higher priced tools. Thanks for sharing. BTW I saw what you did before you took your first bite of noodles. I learned that trick many years ago. Makes everything taste better. God Bless. Chief
Thank you for the kind words! And, yes, being thankful for our blessings is one of the greatest lessons in life, as well as learning Who we should be thankful to!
I like this video. This guy went out into the woods with 10 dollars worth of stuff and stayed 24 hours and made a video about it and demonstrated a whole lot of simple but advanced bushcraft stuff
Just started watching the old videos on this channel. I think a lot of people missed the point of this channel, teaching along with entertainment. Making the knife sheath and backpack would definitely not be needed to a point but it gives you two benefits. Keeps your mind busy from boredom and creates useful tools. Plus he is showing us something that may come in handy if you have to last longer than 24 hours and need to move. Good video on both aspects.
I don't understand why people dislike the backpack segment in this, I for one enjoyed your entire video and tips. You are truly skilled! Thanks so much!
Thank you for your kind words! I put a lot of effort into making these videos and it means a lot to hear things like this. Much appreciated! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thank you for the kind words! It's always difficult to know what folks are interested in when you do a video of this kind. No matter what you do, someone will always thing you should have done it differently and that's okay. That's what makes this challenge so interesting, to see what can be done on the cheap if you have a moderate level of skills. I enjoy the feedback even if some of it seems negative because it shows people are thinking and interacting with the video and with me. So again, thanks for watching and for the kind comment!
I searched dollar store camp challenge. I saw this one and said "oh this is one of my channels". I subbed you a couple months ago. I generally don't visit channels, I see something, if I subscribe I take it from there. Anyway, I enjoy watching these type videos, I've seen some good ones and I've seen some silly ones. This one however, is the best I have ever seen. What a great presentation. A well thought out demonstration of knowledge and skills. It is entertaining and helpful to others and true to the challenge. Good job. As a side note, I read the interaction, about giving thanks, between you and @Chiefkirk Outdoors. I don't think I will ever again forget to give thanks. I was brought to shame and thankfulness. I have many things to be thankful for.
Thank you so much for the kind words! It really means a lot to me that you not only enjoyed the video but also that you even found value in the comment section. And thank you for being one of my subscribers!
One of the best survival challenge videos out there. Thanks for sharing, love your mentality and perspective. Making all the extra equipment was awesome and a true example of what bushcraft is all about ^^
Inspiring! Great to see what $10 can get you. I think most of us hey carried away with all the cool fancy gear and forget what you can accomplish very inexpensively. Keep the videos coming. You'll be at 100k+ subs quickly.
Thank you! Yes! Skills trump gear every time. Knowledge and skill with inferior or minimal gear is better than top of the line equipment and no experience or skill to go with it. Good comment!
Besides being my favorite Bushcraft site, you have the most fun comment section and we appreciate how much you respond to us. Thank you for keeping it real and fun too.
i like that you are teaching your people at your church about these end time survival tips . I wish more of the preachers can be real to their people and preparing their people of the truth
I enjoyed your video I saw your thing about the contest. I'm new to Bushcraft prepping in survival I'm retired and I really like this type of video you want am I regular watched videos. Keep up the good work keep making the videos congratulations on your first year. Most Bushcraft survival is common sense and you and the other video makers say it the same thing from different points of view. Thank you! Gingdah 🚶💀
I enjoyed watching the video. With the skills that you have in bushcrafting, it was a treat to see what you can do with what you have and survive for 24 hours. I would have liked to see you explain a bit more on how and why you did this or that to the newer people. Nice job overall. Thanks.
James Great video! I love being out in nature. There is something grounding about being away from technology and realizing the gifts of Gods good earth.
Clothes you have on... I could 'tent' in them haha at minus 3 celcius (like here now in the Netherlands) Those clip-on lights I have a couple in a bag right here, none of them work unfortunately. So, you got lucky! LOVE your video's all of them!! You're a really good guy with lots and lots of good tips and info's, THANKS James greetz Ellen from Holland
I used all of the duct tape making the straps for the pack and then putting together the shelter at night. Plus, I wanted to demonstrate how you could make a much more durable and safer sheath using wood. Duct tape sheaths are not very safe as the knife can cut through them pretty easily.
Hello, greetings from Southern Ohio. Yes, me too! Thoroughly enjoyed the video. Some people tend to think they know a lot about these type of adventures. I guess it's human nature but I hope everyone learned a little something (or a lot) from this video. I know I did. Like the dog bowl idea. I'm sure it's the best bowl in Dollar Tree. Was wondering if you were hearing a Big Foot tree knock at that 3:00 a.m., awakening. Just having some fun. I've also got a suggestion. I noticed the dog in the beginning. I know I take my canine with me everywhere possible. If a significant other isn't available, we could use our furry friend. Learned years ago that's where the saying 2 or 3 dog night came from. Meaning how cold the night becomes. Of course, if you have a chihuahua it might not work. Anyhow, Mike from OPP lead me here. Appreciate the shared knowledge & the time you took to educate us. Looking forward to upcoming videos.
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it. So far, no Bigfoot around as far as I know.....lol. And yes, my dog loves to come with me whenever I am filming, he just loves to wander off and explore, so I let him. He would be very warm to cuddle up with in the cold for sure. Thanks for coming over from Mike's channel, he is a really great friend.
Wow that is a cool wooden sheath you came up with😎👍If you bend that cardboard from the knife package in half and wrap it in tape you'd have a perfect sheath as well, only temporary...nothing like the one you came up with ...bravo sir👏
Thank you so much. I was trying to demonstrate the bushcraft uses of even dollar store items. I also wanted to do something different than other channels in this challenge plus, I wanted to save the rest of the duck tape for my shelter. I ended up using every bit of it for the backpack straps and then to tape the garbage bag together. There was only 30 feet of it to begin with.
Good pick on your items. You still had extra garbage bags. you can use them as a sleeping bag to stay warmer. Just an extra idea. Love you videos. Keep it up.
Hey James, came over here,by way of Really Big Monkey .You did a great job of picking your items and put them to very good use.Liked the video very much, you keep making them brother,I'll keep watching.May the Good Lord bless you and yours. Randy
Since watching this video some time ago I have watched several other $10.00 challenges, I would vote your video in first place as your confidence and bushcraft skills make a daunting task seem fun.
I just ran across your video and enjoyed it. Learned a few new bushcrafting ideas. I'm a newbie bushcrafter, so I'm soaking up a lot of info I'm finding on UA-cam. In an actual survival emergency there's a few things I think I would have done differently, but your ideas worked out just fine. One thing I might add, Top Ramen can be eaten dry. Crush it up in the package first, then open. Then eat like potato chips. I use to do that for a snack back in college. lol Thanks.
i appreciate you taking your time to make a video like this, its very interesting and you put forth alot of effort to explain properly and respectful with your waiting for more
@@WayPointSurvival for sure my friend i gotta to work right now but you bet ill be watching when i get home ill subscribe and ring the bell so i get your nots and videos
I know this is an older video but this great 👍 and you learned me a new trick I will definitely give a go , the knee clamp trick for smaller branches . I’m really enjoying catching up on vids as only found you yesterday . Definitely got a new subscriber
I kept waiting for you to do something more with the remaining trash bags if there were any. So thanks for getting me to think ahead of what you were doing. Congrats on the knife sheath especially.
This was an awesome video. I have been watching your makes and hobo series and this is the first true survival video that I have seen of yours. Well done.
i enjoyed the video, but spending 24 minutes of a 51 minute video on making a backpack and knife sheath is too much. That leaves 27 minutes to cover finding a place to camp, building your camp, and surviving the night.
Thanks for watching and commenting. I have a lot of viewers, younger folks as well as those with less experience who like to learn how to make things, step by step. It's always a challenge to know how much to show of a process and how much to edit out. Thanks again for your time.
Would depend on the season in the UK as regards the £ shops. Spring/summer, you're good. Lots of gardening stuff, even some camping and cycling stuff and the tools DIY section. Autumn/winter you'd struggle.
A fine video! Id have personally forgone the jute cordage for the water bottle or a hardier water storage, but still interesting seeing you go about it.
True, but I needed all the duct tape for my shelter and the pack that I made. There was only 30 feet of it. And, I wanted to show how you could bushcraft a sheath using wood. Thanks for your comment.
Loved the video! Very informative and resourceful. When the knife packaging fell apart, I would have just folded the cardboard, snugly, around the blade and sealed the sheath with duct tape. I love your wood sheath idea. Much more sustainable.
People sleep on dollar tree but seriously look around in there. The paracord WILL surpass your expectations 😂 they've got all kinda of really good little things. On an unrelated note, the LA totally awesome cleaning products are in fact, totally awesome 😂 i use all kinds of things people cant believe came from the dollar store. Night lights, gardening tools, twine, rope, all the different tapes, gardening seeds, plant starters, the list is endless 🥴😆 The snacks are bomb also
Just found your channel. That was a great instructional video. You are very skillful and have a lot to offer your viewers. I'm going to enjoy following your channel.
Ten bucks at Dollar Tree can easily score you the finest Chinesium "10 C's of Survival", and I personally dont think you need any food for a 24hour period but its nice to have. In my opinion that "knife sheath" was a waste of time, energy, and resources when there was cardboard and duct tape right to hand, which have been far less bulky than that chunk of log. O.o
There was no duct tape left. And, I don't like duct tape and cardboard sheaths as they are not durable and can be cut through easily with the sharp blade. Thank you for watching.
@@WayPointSurvival Thank you for the reply. You used duct tape on your shelter after you had made the 'sheath' so you certainly had tape left. And yes cardboard scabbards can be flimsy but it would have certainly lasted for the duration of your outing. Your log 'sheath' was probably good practice using those tools, and you certainly didn't need those resources for the short duration of your video, however in a longer term scenario I believe a different, less labor and resource intensive, design would be preferred. If not tape and cardboard then perhaps tape n sticks, a section of Reed, fire baked clay, cloth hardened with coal-pitch, etc. Even though I may disagree a little its still good to see people in the woods. :)
Thanks for responding. I also purposely didn't use the duct tape because after making the backpack straps, I planned ahead and wanted to have enough to use for the garbage bag shelter. There was, after all, only 30 feet of tape if I remember correctly. I used it all up taping the bags together. There wouldn't have been enough for a sheath anyway. Plus, I wanted to show that you could indeed do relatively more intensive bushcraft tasks with the cheap dollar store items.
I love this video.. he has created a comedy without knowing it.. how he wonders through the woods and keeps finding other things he wants to try.. and forgets what he started out to do.. he reminds me of ole Tim Conway classics..lol He just might have a small village built by the time someone goes looking for him... Ha Ha.. Love it !! For God's sake give him some water to drink.
I missed this video But am watching it now for the July 2018 GAW. I am glad I did You could of just layed under the blue tarp and said " success" But you made a sheath and backpack too ? = Awesome. Was that a Great Pyrenees Polar Bear in the background.? great wood craft skill + plus bushcrafting !cool tent stake hammer !
Thanks for the video. I always like watching as many different people as possible doing the same things because usually they do them in a different way and you learn different styles of doing things. Thank you for your way of soing things.
That sheath would make a great gift, add magnets to the back and hang on fridge or in campervan. I love the methods used. I knew this would be worth watching, even if the context was making for frustrating viewing.
Yes! The interactive relationship of locution intended to produce an epistemological emotion is often not cognitively accepted by those with a misunderstanding of the use of the ironic as the twisting of a word, phrase or meaning in combination with situational propriety can sometimes create derision which obfuscates the speaker's original purpose in the mind of the hearer. Even the wise appreciate a little foolishness now and then. Thank you for watching and for your comment!
Your tarp, laid out, then wrapped around all of the other gear, would be the pack, that ties to the frame with a diamond 0 hitch. The cordage could secure the knife sheath together with 3 or 4 loops. That would save many yards of valuable cordage. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying
I've subbed. This video was full of rookie mistakes, but I love your attitude and your bushcrafting ideas etc. Thank you for putting yourself out there and sharing your adventure :)
People chill out! It’s not a life or death situation! He’s practicing his skills! Stop criticizing what he does! You go out and do the same thing! Bet u won’t make it! Haha stop saying stuff ull never do!
I don’t think I would have waisted so much time making a backpack just wrap everything in the tarp tape the ends make a long strip to use as a sling then use bark to make the sheath instead of beating up the only knife I had with me I don’t know I’m not a survival expert I’m just saying I don’t think I would’ve done it that way not to mention the possible injuries that could have occurred
In a survival situation, one of your greatest enemies is boredom. Being able to stay busy by making things is very important. If you know what you're doing, there is no real danger of hurting yourself or beating up the knife. It was just fine and useful the way it was. Also, if you've ever carried anything for any distance, you'll know how useful proper backpack straps can be. Thanks for watching and for sharing your opinion!
Cool, I'm also from Southern, Ohio... Scioto County. I Love the woods and doing survival with the smallest and cheapest items I can find to see how I can hold up. Good Video man.. Thanks..
Great video. Very much enjoyed it. Interesting challenge With a long fire that close to you I'd put four upright sticks in front of it in case a log rolls off and into the sleeping area. I'm paranoid though :-)
Thank you, my friend, glad you liked it. It does really test your ability to make do with less than ideal tools and gear. The area where I was sleeping was very level and I had rocks on the ground to help contain the fire and keep them from rolling too far...hopefully :-)
Thanks for watching, I'm glad that you enjoyed the video! The leg hold for cutting wood etc. is also known as a plumber's vise. It is very useful and safe when used correctly.
When i was really poor i would use bread bags or grocery bags like the dollar store bags you have for boot liners to keep my socks dry inside of the boots if I didn't have waterproof boots. It works if your careful, its a life saver.
James do you realize what you did for you mind here it was busy no time for wasted fear thoughts great video new subscriber more people did this it would be so great for a wonderful feeling of accomplishment .
I ate many a can of cold beanie weenies and chefboyardee. I didn't want to bother getting up and going to the convenience store, 1/4 mile away, to use their microwave. Many other times, it was a sanedwich, or powdered milk, dried froui, Stevia and raisin bran cereal. The college library building had a staff room that had a frig and a nuke oven, I used that a lot. I used pee jars and kept a litter pan, litter, plastic bags, but only needed it 5x in 3 years.
I love that you both didn't ask us to subscribe at the beginning of the video and brought in making basic tools, like the hammer and wedge. Can you survive 24 hours with this other stuff? Yes. But can you assure safety or rescue after 24 hours? Having made some basic tools, you already have knowledge and tools incase it takes longer and can apply that thinking to gain self sufficiency and self sustainment.
Do u have a white dog ?? Cuz seen one in back ground ..luv learning yet that's what got me hooked in knowing different things ..wow the knife I cut the skin off my finger from cutting a watermelon .. took months to get skin back ... Lol ...... Luv learning thank you ...
Enjoyed Your video you can make a knife sheath from the same cardboard it came in and duck tape and string for a neck shelth. it takes 5 mins and you dont dull the knife making it out of wood
Thank you! Yes, but I wanted to show the capabilities of the knife and how it was able to bushcraft a sheath. Duck tape and cardboard would have been easy, but not as permanent and also I was out for a solid 24 hours with nothing else to do. In a survival situation, keeping yourself busy is very important. Even though it wasn't a real survival situation, it still served the purpose of showing what a person could do if they had to and only had access to dollar store items. Thank you for watching and commenting!
@@WayPointSurvival Yeah you have a point You meant The video For educational purpose. I was just focusing on the 24 hour Just thinking about the the temporary solution Thanks again looking forward to the videos

On an unrelated note, the LA totally awesome cleaning products are in fact, totally awesome 😂 i use all kinds of things people cant believe came from the dollar store. Night lights, gardening tools, twine, rope, all the different tapes, gardening seeds, plant starters, the list is endless 🥴😆
The snacks are bomb also
Yes, they really do have pretty good quality for the price.
James-I dig them "Bushcraft Chopsticks!" Great adventure brother.
Thank you, my friend. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Awesome video! Really enjoyed it! Thank you! Well done!
Thanks for watching!
Just found your channel. That was a great instructional video. You are very skillful and have a lot to offer your viewers. I'm going to enjoy following your channel.
Thank you so much!
Dude I love watching all your videos but could you tell me can we see more of that big white dog I like how he just chills out in the woods
He's in a lot of my videos, he likes to run around and make secret appearances when I don't notice him, lol.
So cool. Very resourceful!!!❤
Thank you!
Great job! I learned a lot. Thanks!
Thank you!
Cool video. Thanks for bringing us along.
You're welcome! Thanks so much for watching and glad you enjoyed it!
Ok not sure if skilled or loco lol great video. I am really shocked that saw and knife held up that well. That was impressive!
Keep on keepin on!
Thank you, Tony!
definite Michael Scott vibes... keep em coming
Thanks for watching!
I really thought you were going to break that knife just as you got the knife sheath finished LOL great video
Thank you!
That is a great ideal. Enjoyed, your video.
Thank you!
You made me smile! Thanks for watching and commenting!
I got a little ADD on that video, Lol!
Not for nothing but shouldn't fire and shelter be your first priority over a knife sheath
Depends on the circumstances and weather...
I missed this video But am watching it now for the July 2018 GAW.
I am glad I did You could of just layed under the blue tarp and said " success"
But you made a sheath and backpack too ?
This is the first time i saw someone make a backpack frame. Thanks for another idea. 💡
Thanks for watching and commenting!
That sheath would make a great gift, add magnets to the back and hang on fridge or in campervan. I love the methods used. I knew this would be worth watching, even if the context was making for frustrating viewing.
Thank you for watching!
15:15 That's the moment I shook my head in embarrassment at the pride you felt in coming up with that one liner -- . --
@@WayPointSurvival😅was this a challenge to use a certain number of busy words😄?
Good job! 👍👍👍
I enjoyed watching
Thank you for watching!
oh and are you going to keep that knife? it seemed to be a useful and reliable piece of gear
Yes, I am going to keep it. It is still surprisingly sharp after all the hard use I gave it.
Your tarp, laid out, then wrapped around all of the other gear, would be the pack, that ties to the frame with a diamond 0 hitch.
The cordage could secure the knife sheath together with 3 or 4 loops. That would save many yards of valuable cordage.

Good idea!
I've subbed. This video was full of rookie mistakes, but I love your attitude and your bushcrafting ideas etc. Thank you for putting yourself out there and sharing your adventure :)
Thank you for this Video, James.
My pleasure!
Very well done. Minimum gear and a lot of imagination can go a long way.
Thank you so much!
It’s cool! Great video
People chill out! It’s not a life or death situation! He’s practicing his skills! Stop criticizing what he does! You go out and do the same thing! Bet u won’t make it! Haha stop saying stuff ull never do!
Thank you for your support!
Great video,really well produced .
Much appreciated!
Thanks for tips and very nice work i really like the knife keeper
You're welcome! Thanks for watching and for the comment!
Practicality and efficient are first looks are at the bottom and is just there to keep busy to keep your mind off the situation
True!
Cool, I'm also from Southern, Ohio... Scioto County. I Love the woods and doing survival with the smallest and cheapest items I can find to see how I can hold up. Good Video man.. Thanks..
Thank you!
Best one yet James!
Thank you for watching!
Great video. Very much enjoyed it. Interesting challenge
With a long fire that close to you I'd put four upright sticks in front of it in case a log rolls off and into the sleeping area. I'm paranoid though :-)
Thank you, my friend, glad you liked it. It does really test your ability to make do with less than ideal tools and gear. The area where I was sleeping was very level and I had rocks on the ground to help contain the fire and keep them from rolling too far...hopefully :-)
Good stuff. Hard to tell level from the angle. I never see folks use uprights in front in case of rolling logs from high banked fires. I'm paranoid
The way you used your leg to hold the stick was very cool and will be put in my memory
Absolutely! That's an old school hack that is worth its weight in gold if your shoes leak.
So once you have the pack frame made you snug your pack of stuff on kind of like a spider bundling it's food with a line to the frame🙂good idea.
You could have (possibly) used the knife to tighten the screw on the saw....I've seen weirded things happen lol
Indeed. Thanks for watching!
Enjoying your video.
Thanks so much!
I'm impressed 😊
Thank you so much!
James do you realize what you did for you mind here it was busy no time for wasted fear thoughts great video new subscriber more people did this it would be so great for a wonderful feeling of accomplishment .
Another awesome video
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow, nice one James! Cheers, Rich
Thanks!
Excellent ideas!
Thank you for the great comment! Really appreciate you watching the video.
Early spring, Southern Ohio, is sassafras available? It would make a great tea.
Yes, it does make a great tea!
Great Video! I really enjoyed this!
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Do u have a white dog ?? Cuz seen one in back ground ..luv learning yet that's what got me hooked in knowing different things ..wow the knife I cut the skin off my finger from cutting a watermelon .. took months to get skin back ... Lol ...... Luv learning thank you ...
Yes, he's a great pyrenees.
Great video nice area
Pack frame was awesome I need to try my hand at making one
Thanks! Here's a link to a video I made showing how to make one: ua-cam.com/video/R762Q-Vy0uo/v-deo.html
need to do an updated version of this
Yes, unfortunately it's now the $1.25 store!
@@WayPointSurvival
Yeah you have a point You meant The video For educational purpose. I was just focusing on the 24 hour Just thinking about the the temporary solution Thanks again looking forward to the videos
Hi James, I love the videos and am learning a lot. Is that white dog yours? Keep em coming mate, Hwyl, Nige from South Wales, UK
Yes it is, thanks for watching!
