  • I had to anesthetize my puffer and trim its teeth. I have never been this nervous about anything to do with handling a fish before. If you have a puffer...make sure they eat their crunchy foods!

It has been a week since I performed the surgery, and the puffer is still doing well. I actually probably should have trimmed more off. Have you ever had to anesthetize a fish to address a medical issue? Let me know in the comments below. 👇

If you take care of a situation before it becomes a problem, there is no problem. Once again, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. You are taking care of your pets, that is how you're suppose to take care of the animals in your care. Good job.

You did a great job and it certainly is nerve wracking. I love these puffers but wouldn’t own them again due to this. We have had them for 7 years now and still occasionally have to trim teeth. They eat lots of snails, we have tried mixing the Repashy with shells, clams on the half shell (they will not eat them) putting Repashy on a rock which they love but nothing worked. We still have to trim the teeth occasionally.

Clove oil makes me so nervous. I also have 2 Amazon puffers and I used to have to trim the teeth of one of them. I was afraid of accidentally killing it with clove oil, so I’ve managed to trim with it fully awake. I put it in a wide container so there’s enough room for my hands to be able to hold the puffer. I keep the puffer submerged in water as I hold it in my hands and quickly trim. The hardest part is that their mouth is so small and it’s hard to get them positioned to cut. I feel so clumsy doing it, but have been successful in trimming them. I’ve had to do it about twice a year the first year I had them and then as they got older and yes, feeding more snails, I haven’t had to do it again. I’ve had them for 4 years now.

Ah the look on your face reminded me of my first time. Even with a very abundant hard diet for my puffers I still have to do a trim from time to time. So far the best nippers I found are ingrown toenail removers. I've been aspiring to open my own shop one day but maybe I'll turn my attention to inventing a set of puffer teeth nippers 😂 something that holds their lips out the way. That is the most stressful part for me.

I know how that feels! I once had to cut out a piece of my oranda's wen. Happy to say we both lived thru that ordeal. That was back in 1997, so the information on what and how to do it was not the best, and I didn't know about clove oil. I wish I had known, because the worst part was trying to cut while the fish was trying to flop out of my hands.

Great video! I have to sedate killifish sometimes and find that they wake up quicker if you use a pincet, take the tale fin of the fish and gently pull them backwards through the water column. This way the water flows over the gills and this makes the sedative leave the fish's system more quickly. But i have never done this with puffers so not sure if it will work as well.

I have 4 of these. Only one of them is able to keep its teeth trimmed, the others are not so good st it, so I find myself trimming teeth up to 3 times a year. It oddly enough seemed easier the first few times. I think I'll try your idea of letting them eat the snails out of hunger, feed them less frozen foods.

I have trimmed my Amazon puffers beak a couple times. The first time I did it the same way you did. The second time I didn’t use clove oil. I feel it was quicker with less stress on the fish and me. Curious you thoughts on not using clove oil. The puffer is way more wiggly so you need a good grip.

I wonder if DR Ashley Emanuele could suggest a better medication for sedation of fish. I think id be too nervous to use clove oil for sedation. I've only ever heard of it being used to euthanize fish.

They say it's dangerous to keep sedating puffer fish, would it not be possible to trim the teeth without drugging the animal?
And Try putting repashy on the rocks and giving them frozen snails to wear down the teeth

  • @erick6102

What are the hard foods they need to eat to keep the teeth filed down? Guessing snails. What else?

    • @TazawaTanks

For smaller puffers, mostly snails. I also use freeze-dried krill and meal worms, as the are kind of crunchy. I’m going to try ground up oyster shells mixed with repashy as some have suggested.

Bro put the puffer in a separate tank for a while and only feed it mollusks, it will be forced to crack some shells. sounds messed up I know, but if it’s hungry enough, it will have no choice and eat the mollusks, eventually reintroduce him to his current tank
