  • Today we feed our Amazon Puffer fish also known as South American puffer fish, Bee puffer and Brazilian puffer. (Colomesus Asellus)The Amazon puffer loves to eat snails, bloodworms, freeze dried krill and shrimp. We are trying to add other foods such as miss shrimp but as yet with no success.

    Sheila, yeah I had five male guppies when I first started the hobby and they love to swim up and down the glass where the bulkhead stream was the strongest I thought they were playing in the stream. But when I posted the video in a guppy group they told me my fish are stressed! It freaked me out so I did try different things putting up a sheet against the glass so they couldn’t see themselves in the glare. tried keeping the lights off or keeping the lights low. White light blue light. which did seem to help some. Then I got a different tank for just guppies and I put them in there and they stop doing it they went from a 35 hexagon to a 50 gallon rectangle and they stop doing the glass surfing. So I don’t know if it was just because the tank was so deep? The hexagon is 24 inches deep as opposed to the 20 inches deep and the 50. anyway I’m just glad they’re no longer doing it. Now when I see a fish do it now randomly in my all-male 50 gallon, I worry they have a ich & itching or worms it’s just a never-ending worry.

    I have two of these awesome fish. They are glass surfing, too. One more than the other. I noticed that they relax a bit when the light is off and when I raised the temperature, but they still surf. I was attributed it to stress as I haven’t had them very long. I hope they calm down and enjoy their home.

      Can you get yours to eat snails? Mine just ignore the bladder and ramshorn snails in the tank and only eat blood worms & I’m worried their beaks will grow too long... how are yours?

    • @1sleepeatgamealot830
      @1sleepeatgamealot830 4 роки тому +2

      Jennifer Crawford mine are still super shy so I haven’t seen them eat. It’s a bit worrisome. What I’ve been doing is gathering up a whole bunch of snails via cucumbers. Then drop them all in the back (where they hang out) except for a few. I break the rest up a bit with a wooden spoon and drop those in too. The blood and stuff seems to peak their interest. I do get floating empty snail shells so I’m assuming they’re eating. I have to admit that I’m concerned about them more than I enjoy them. I do love them though.

    • @jen_217_
      @jen_217_ 4 роки тому +1

      Venice Jose I love mine too but they stress me and sometimes I just have to turn the lights off and block it out for a while... I struggle with the obsessive wall surfing and I cracked open a snail and my other fish started eating it... the puffers love blood worms but I have a ton of snails and I’ve seen them kind of “peck” at the snails and jerk back as if they can’t eat even the smallest of snails?? They don’t do a lot of the hunting behavior I would like to see but their beaks do not appear too long to eat and they have No issues with the blood worms... I don’t know.. I’m like you.. I love the puffers but my anxiety over them is sky high! Lol

    I have had my amazon puffers for about 4 months now. I had glass surfing issues in the beginning also. Adding more puffers to a total of 5 and just giving it time solved it. It took about 2 months for them to stop doing it. Now they are the amazing puffers every one thinks they are!

      I had the same problem. I originally got the last one from my fish store (a pretty young one) and was waiting and waiting and waiting for more. He was all by his lonesome for about a month and half. The new 4 I got were much older/bigger than the first one but they all got along just fine! They are all in a 60 gallon with Sunset Gouramis, Otos, Panda Garra, Celestial Pearl Danios, and one female killi gardneri. The puffers have never once even acted like they knew the other fish are there lol, they completely ignore them and just do their own thing. It is in a moderately planted tank with some large driftwood and rocks.

    For what it is worth, you can can create a natural flow using a sump or canister filter by pulling from one side and returning to the other. Add a power head near the return to add flow at a different angle or height and it should create a natural side to side flow with added currents. I would like to ask you if you have had any issues with the teeth and needing to trim them and if not, how you have had success keeping it ground down? As far as glass surfing, the solution I have seen others have success with is much heavier planting. I can not remember the source, but this guy redid the tank with heavy planting, he claimed it reduced the surfing behavior to near zero, but they still did it from time to time. He said they began displaying hunting behaviors, exploring between plants.

    My 4 amazons did this to.
    For some strange reason they quit doing it after i changed the current pointing towards the surface!
    What also worked was blinding the glass, this reduces the reflection on the inside.
    Both worth a try!

    They are such little cuties. It's good to see them get along so well with the other fishes. My flowerhorn used to glass surf as well to not because he was stressed but mostly cause he just wanted to get at his reflection. He mainly used to surf the back and side glass panels. I ended up painting my glass black and the glass surfing stopped immediately. Don't really know if that's gonna work for puffers but thats what worked for my fish.

    About 25 years ago I had 3 Amazon puffers. The store I worked at knew nothing apart from them being from SA and freshwater. Since all had died except those 3 by the time I saw them, I had to rescue them and they grew 6 to 8" long! They were in a 15 gallon tank on their own, ate only Hikari pellets, LOVED nestling down curled up in the sand at night, and literally begged at the front of the tank for food. I had them for 8 years, until the littlest one got sick and died, and I just couldn't save the others. I knew that puffers release toxins into the water when they die, so I was doing water changes daily, but couldn't save them. I wish I had money at the time to have given them a bigger tank. I was devastated when I lost them. They were like little puppies... splashing and clacking their teeth on the glass when they saw me coming.

      It sounds like a stress behavior. We had trouble with ours doing the same thing. We eventually planted the tank heavily and lined the inside on the tank with a our tank divider material. That solved the problem. If you check out our setting up a 125 gallon tank video you will see us moving them to a new tank and using the lining again.

    Glass surfing because puffers are shy. Too many other fish. Sure there's plenty of room and puffers are outgoing with their owners but they don't like a lot of other tank mates. They're so aware of their surroundings, it's just too much stimulation.
