A local mom and pop shop repaired my first gaming PC in 1998. I went back and forth to the shop when I needed weird cables and had questions. They were always very helpful and without them I don't think I would've ever started building my own PCs.
this right here. Living in Canada we didnt have the same access to microcenter or frys. we relied on mom and pop shops until Canada computers and NCIX/Memory express started getting more reputable. though id argue canada computers still isnt very reliable in terms of customer service or website.
Used to be a guy near me who ran a small hole on the wall shop of mostly used and new damaged box stuff, some bulkbought office pcs etc. Absolutely great deals and usually had the absolutely random crap i needed. Shop disappeared a few years back. Now im stuck checking online like everyone else 😮💨
This had to be a huge help to this guy. Imagine having tens of thousands of dollars tied up in inventory over the past 20 years, with lots of it now being obsolete and no hope of ever getting your money back on it. Linus just helped this guy keep his doors open for who knows how many more years. Really loved this video, guys. I'd love to see a follow-up looking closer at some of the older items, maybe get a intern to inventory and add up Ebay prices for EVERYTHING and see how close the total actually was to what a re-seller could get on Ebay.
The number of people in these comments who don't get that the guy is just having fun and highballing the prices because it's all arbitrary to Linus is insane. If he was really invested in ripping off Linus, he wouldn't be so chill with the arbitrary gambles, and if Linus was trying not to get ripped off, he wouldn't be trying to tilt things in the guy's favor. Plus they're both smiling and laughing about the dumb prices.
It would be a very boring video if he just gave normal prices, plus linus didn't lose out on the deal. He got multiple videos, wan show topics, all the stuff and had it paid for by the sponsor. People just want to hate a good guy having fun.
I was scrolling down to read this little bit of common sense and upvote it. The sponsorship and video revenue is way more than what they paid the guy for his stock, and at the very end you can see exactly why: it's an hommage to electronics history and helping hand to a guy in need who has served for years at the frontline of technological repair for so many people also in need in an insanely demanding and hectic business model.
This dude is awesome btw. During COVID i got stuck in vancouver for 2 months due to needing vaccine to fly home. I went in this little shop close to my AIRBNB and asked him how much to rent a monitor/power supply/keyboard for a couple months. He'd never had someone request that before but he agreed and cut me a fair deal. Glad to see him featured here.
@@pavy415 IIRC it was 50$. I already had brought my motherboard/gpu/cpu/cooler with me so I just needed 1000W PSU, monitor and a couple peripherals. I offered him 200$ deposit to show him I was being legit. He doesnt normally rent anything. He mostly does repairs and then sells whatever people request from him. We both didnt know what was a fair price for doing this but 50$ seemed good to me. I got to game for 2 months in my AIRBNB. I would have gone mad without my gaming hehe.
By far one of my favorite LTT videos in a very long time. The concept was great and the owner was great on camera and had the perfect personality to make this entertaining. Hopefully we see him again in a follow-up or a guest on the WAN show or something.
Man, gotta say: One of the best LTT videos of all time. I love it. The charisma of the shopowner, the bantering with the crew, the games. Certified GOAT
good or bad charisma? I don't know what was the deal behind this but the ridiculous pricing he came up with doesn't rise my sympathy. I see the point of making a good video and with the sponsor LTT will probably make more money than it lost by buying that stuff and at the same time doing some sort of charity. But it hurts!
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS EPISODE! I have literally had to clean out multiple shops, finding new inbox ancient tech, and various “rare” items. And although I knew most was obsolete and crap, it was still oddly emotional seeing so much unused tech that STILL HAS value to that one person in need. I’m currently going through a nuclear plant closure that’s been in existence since the 50’s, and seeing the history reminds me to: Always remember your roots, the products that got you to where you are today, and the diehards who continue to keep these old systems alive. Thanks Linus and Team.
honestly, probably one of my favorite LTT videos. Not only was the whole video and interactions between you guys hilarious, but seeing him at the end, it made my day. It's tough out here, and i'm glad you were able to change this guy's life in that moment, and give him so much, for all that basically dead stock
I mean, I love he's buying everything and allowing the dude to maybe buy new stock for his store but the gamified aspect makes it look like low tier UA-cam short content.... good idea, needs refinement
@@peartreezif he’d just walked in and handed the guy a credit card, and then recorded (I assume) the logistics team huffing the stuff into the moving truck the video would be so boring.
@@peartreez I'm really not a fan of Mr Beast videos and those sorts, I think they always have that vibe, but this was genuinely both entertaining and heartwarming to watch.
BlackLab! This was my local mom & pop shop. Keith is a great guy and I'm really glad to see he's still there. Also glad to see you're buying up all his stock Linus! And Keith isn't lying, my dad is one of those real people who actually wants that really old technology and drops in regularly to check out what's there.
It still is helpfull either way because no-one in their right mind would pay these prices for those items. The fact that he doesn't have to write these things off as a pure loss is the biggest help he could get for it.
Nice to see someone helping local business owners. We need more people like this. Rather than pranks - giving mom money to friends for challenges. Helping those who are the heart of working class. Gained my respec and subscribed.
As the child of a mom and pop store. This made me really emotional at the end. Seeing my own mom and dad struggle through the hard years. This really hit home.
This is what I really wanted out of this video, and it warms my heart that it achieved that. I am also the child of a family business so I know the sense of relief this kind of windfall can bring.
@@TannerLTTthat and people actually going to these small stores is huge. I use my local store for small stuff. Problem is when a lot of these stores opened, computer stuff was still a small market. Start today I think you'd have a better opportunity

@@LnZ_Blu I'd have taken a minute to figure out what I actually needed and just let him have everything for that - which I suspect this dude probably tried that but Linus needed to make a game of it for a video so here we are lol
What an epic way of giving back to the community. Also, that shop owner was a great sport - it was interesting watching him go through the emotions of what was happening.
Yeah it took him a while (and me too for that matter) to realize this wiseguy with a camera crew was actually bailing him out, but he went with it beautifully.
This is hands down my favorite LTT video since Scrapyard Wars started. Incredibly wholesome and heartfelt what you guys did for that store. The way Linus and he went back and fourth the entire time made me feel like they've known each other for years. I really hope we see similar content in the future, both with that store owner and going to Mom & Pop shops.
I agree!!! Best video you ever made, imagine the burden you took off of him by purchasing everything that he could never sell and the extension of the happiness that will reach to whomever with what you paid him.
I know where this guy is coming from. I worked at a pawn shop. People come in with stuff that really doesn’t have much value, but they are there because they need money, so you do it just to help them, and end up with a lot of silly inventory. Judging by how sweet this man is, I’m going to bet he was in the same boat.
I work for a mom and pop service shop, the boss has been doing this for 30 years and I greatly appreciate Linus and Ridge going out and helping this guy and clearing out all his junk.
I was just curious, how is the business doing? What services do they main do? I was thinking a service shop might bring in the lion share of revenue to a small mom and pop computer shop but my guess with online shopping is that most people buy their computer hardware online most of the time instead of visiting small shops like this unless they are looking to get used old hardware that is hard to find.
@@tamwilfred it depends, if a local computer store has a cable or something small i almost always buy it local (convenience) . I only buy super expensive parts online to avoid instore markup.
@@soren00024 But you are probably the few that pop in and do something like that. The general trend is that most people would probably buy it online. The other thing is most people just did and bought small things like that, I would imagine the profit margins on things like that are very high. Even stores like BestBuy expanded their revenue by offering services like their Geeksquad.
You just saved this man’s business. It’s probably not your money because sponsors pay. But man I got emotional thinking about how happy this man is and his livelihood has been given a second chance. God bless you!
Yeah, it's both. None of the three parties involved in this would have made the video if they weren't profiting from it, not Linus, not the store, not the sponsor. That may sound cynical but you're completely right about the impact it's making on this business owner and his life, so it's a great way to use that sort of benefit and bring someone else in on the pot of money
Whatever. I think there is a bigger picture here. This is chump change to LTT. I have been drifting away from LTT over the last couple years to the point I barely watched. The GN video got me hip to the big scandal. This is the LTT content I used to love! Good job guys for listening to your staff and viewers! Having your sponsors as products not related to your industry is a good move to regain trust. Also, Linus just being himself like this takes me back. I loved it when he humbly did the Louis Rossman video and also the Madison episode where she kept roasting and trolling Linus. Sorry, I know that last one is weird right now. I don't want to believe that she was some kind of serious victim but also don't want to believe she is making things up. Hopefully it is somewhere in the middle where ot was a few minor things and she might be exaggerated. Her and Linus's interaction was epic on that video and I wish she had been in more content. Keep it Old School, quality over quantity. It might not maximize profits in short term but will mos def bring back and create more dedicated viewers!
no joke, I think this may be my favorite video you guys have EVER made. A nice mix of comedy, a walk down tech memory lane, and a nice heartwarming end. Not to mention you helped the guy fix his truck. Bar none, my favorite LTT video thus far. A+
watching this a second time knowing you changed his life for the better is so much more fun this is amazing content i know this isnt something you can justify regularly but its amazing to seeing someone doing good for the little guy
This was really a heartwarming video. I grew up building my first few computers with stores like this. Sadly both stores I frequented went out of business once everything went online. Huge respect to Linus for doing this.
My very first PC was done by such a shop. Way before online was even a word anyone would know. And it was my last... Since then i decided better to go some miles more to the next bigger town with a real computer shop, better prices and better service and build it on my own. Yeah, and then online became a thing^^
This is the most fun I’ve had watching an LTT video in years. I cheered, I laughed, I got misty-eyed. I loved this gentleman’s attitude and how he gave as good as he got(that NCIX line was brutally awesome). More videos like this, please.
@@jayman94fly there is something wrong with you as a person if you say that. The guy sounded like he was clearly playing along with Linus. Go touch grass and stay away from little kids
This is 100% absolutely the type of content we need more of, we hardly ever get stuff like this anymore. When's the next junkyard wars? If I wanted screens full of specs about the newest this or that I'll probably never get I'd just google it. Well, duckduckgo it, since I don't use google....
I love this. After all the fun and games, a normal dude just had the best day of his life. I may even subscribe to floatplane just to see the extra content on this. Truly a 10/10 video.
I don't say this about many video's but I absolutely loved watching this video. What you did for Keith was amazing. You can just tell that the products in his store were not jumping off the shelves and the fact that you came in cleared it all and the immense amount of appreciation that he had in the video for what you did. Bless you Linus team.
Fun fact! the mesh antenna you can see on the top shelf in the top left of the screen at 16:28 can actually be used for receiving signals from geostationary weather satellites. If you make some small modifications to the lnb, it makes it even more efficient in the ~1.7 gHz range which these satellites broadcast on. If you also want to spend some extra money on buying or building an antenna rotator, you can even use it to get high resolution images from polar orbiting weather satellites which also broadcast their higher resolution images in the same frequency range.
This is the first LTT video in a long time, that I was glued to the screen. Fantastic work team. Also both of your exchanges at the end were wonderful to see. He probably felt like a huge weight was lifted off his shoulders and that he had just won the lottery. And it sounded like it couldn't have come at a better time with his truck. This video was just... a bunch of feel goods.
You should do more of these. I felt this was a huge relief for this guy and I would love to see more people like this feel some relief, with a chance to start over using fresh inventory.
This video made my heart melt, you can tell the entire time that this is probably one of the best days of this man’s life, hes just happy to be there and I and I absolutely love it
Dude that was one of the most entertaining, wholesome videos I have ever watched. If I wasn't grinning from ear to ear it was because I was laughing out loud! The easiest way to make sure you got the best deal is ..... hire him. He is by far the most valuable asset in that store.
Have to say, it may have felt seriously painful on the bank balance, but the banter with the LTT crew and store owner was priceless. What a really lovely man! That didn't make his year, that saved his life's work from going under. He has to pay upwards of $1000 Month just for the store front to house basically garbage or lose it all. Most would have cut and run years ago after Internet stole the market.

He’s always willing to help people out and has helped me and my family out countless times when we’ve had computer issues.
As someone who has worked in a small computer store since 1995, we need someone to do this. Only last week we threw out 150 expired ink cartridges, one of our workers was not born before some of them had expired, the oldest cartridge expired in 1999. I loved watching this episode, we have some of these products still on our shelves.
"150 expired ink cartridges, one of our workers was not born before some of them had expired, the oldest cartridge expired in 1999" Kinda speaks to how fucked up printer and printer ink manufacturers are in terms of forced obsolescence. I get that technology evolves at a fucking rapid pace, but by this time everyone should just be moving to refillable tanks out the box... Sell ink by the bottle, instead of by the cartridge, of which a lot of just becomes e-waste.

Laser printers cartridges last a really long time as well. I only remember seeing my dad buy ink toner twice in the years we have had our laser printer. I got teary eyed too. I had a computer store like that, with my twin brother for about 23 years (1993-2016), we started when we were 20 yo. We closed it and moved on but I still think about all those years. Thanks Linus for showing me all those stuff I grew up with.
Family friend of ours owned a PC shop, and I spent every day after school in it while my mom worked there. It's what got me into computers. First time I ever played Doom, Duke 3D, opened up a PC and changed a stick of RAM was in that shop. I miss that environment, that "this is where people go for a PC" feel. The guys that worked there and the boss (my mom's friend) were such great people. My first PC came from there. So hey, shout out to you and your brother for possibly providing that same "we're for the little guy" experience to someone else.
As others have shared the same opinion, this is my fav LTT video I've seen on this channel. It just had good vibes, I like the playfulness of it and gamble aspect of it, and I like what your doing helping out a small business.
The ending got my emotions going, growing up building computers in the late 90's early 2000's was fueled heavily by guys just like Keith, they created a culture that many of us enthusiasts still carry on today. Good job on this one fellas
The energy between Linus and the store owner was incredible. Two massive nerds. Edit: This was such an awesome video. I'm sure the shop owner will remember this forever. Might have just saved his store
it's amazing he's stayed in business this long with the changing landscape, this opportunity probably means he will get to stay in the game for years to come. best of luck to him.
Yeah, when he opened this store there were dozens of different standards and trends that came and went that he either had to just keep whatever didn't sell on display and hope someone wanted it or thrown it away.
It's kind of paradoxical. How did he stay in business this long only offering junk for sale? He's selling something though since he bought all this junk that never sells and somehow could afford it.
@@norezenable What people want changes all the time and ofc he sold products but when a product becomes outdated or people just stop buying then you will have some ''junk''
This is the best video I've watched on youtube in a long time. I laughed so much but also got a bit of a warm and fuzzy feeling from it for Linus helping out a small business, the owner seems like he works hard but its tough out there for everyone.
That was honestly wonderful. Go back when he fills up the front of the store again for a before/after comparison. Also, I nominate Keith get a 5000$ tech upgrade.
I'd advise against carrying so many items in the first place because it's very likely history will just repeat. Being featured on this channel will give him a boost, but that's temporary. There is just too much competition for a single shop with no price felixibility to move stock. The repair side is presumably how he's keeping the lights on. I'd carry limited amounts of essentials - essentials being the categories that have actually been selling in the store. We used to have tonnes of indie computer shops in my area. Most are long gone and the surviving mainly focus on selling refurb PCs that they also promote on Kijiji, Facebook, etc.
This was just the best video. I don't think any of us can truly understand what a difference this would've made for this guy. Hit me right in the feels ❤
This is one of my favorite videos you’ve ever done. I hope Blacklab has their best year ever after this. They deserve it. Linus you rock for doing this also.
If I were him, I would be giving serious thought to closing up shop. With all the old stock now out, he can probably do a closing sale with whatever he has in the back and then retire. Or make it a repairs only type of business.
@@Eagle3302PL I assume he's made money over the years. It's not about the 30k but just finally getting rid of all the old stock that probably would have cut into his savings to get rid of.

Actually he didn't. We intentionally ghosted him on this like 6 months ago so that it would be a genuine surprise when we showed up. His mind was blown ahahaha - LS
Best video ever. Not just for tech or LTT. I laughed so hard several times. Best of all as it dawned on me Linus kindness, like the small owner I almost teared up. More good things to come for you Linus and LTT. And good luck to the computer repair store.
I used to frequent a mom and dad pc gaming cafe near my high school (late 90s). I became good friends with them and he'd invite some of us to stay after he closed shop for some free late night gaming sessions. When his wife was hospitalized, I offered to keep the shop open so they didn't miss out on some revenue (it was the summer break as well). I didn't ask to get paid or anything (obviously), but he insisted that I could grab anything from the kitchen since I would be running the place by myself and couldn't leave the place unattended. I ran the shop for a little over a week and didn't mind the 45-minute commute (per way). I was glad to have helped them in some way. The shop is still there but they're no longer hands-on with the day-to-day.
I feel like this maybe one of the best LTT videos to date. The light hearted gambling, getting a bit of value check on random stuff for nostalgia, and at the end of the day helping out a little store that likely has struggled. Entertaining and helpful to the community.

I don’t know, I honestly think if any channel were able to do this type of content somewhat regularly in the tech space, LTT would be that channel. Just think of the sheer amount of insane content that can come from this purchase, simply because they have access to the lab, and a team of people who can come up with all kinds of insane ways to use these items in entertaining ways. I guarantee we’re going to see quite a few of these items featured in upcoming videos, in turn making up the cost of production, as well as turning a very healthy profit on the fairly near term.

I know a lot of small business owners, quite a few just in my family actually. One of the them a trucking company that is basically on autopilot; I couldn't imagine a computer store. It just seems like it would be impossible to compete with places like newegg or amazon. I would think it would be upgrade/repair only. Tech moves so quick the inventory gets dated very fast.
If I can offer some advice - if there are products that no one is buying, just get rid of those products. Having them sit around makes the store look old and dumpy and people ready to buy something are not going to be interested in poking around the shop..
This is one of your best videos from the past year imo. Lots of jokes (synergy with Keith is phenomenal), helping a small shop get rid of dead stock, showing old pieces of technology and how they changed over the years. And because you helped the shop owner get rid of old/dead stock, now he can either restock with up to date materials or simply change direction of the shop, like focus more on repairs or a completely different branch.

I thought that it was obvious, I guess people are just dense.
This dude is awesome btw. During COVID i got stuck in vancouver for 2 months due to needing vaccine to fly home.
"150 expired ink cartridges, one of our workers was not born before some of them had expired, the oldest cartridge expired in 1999"
Kinda speaks to how fucked up printer and printer ink manufacturers are in terms of forced obsolescence. I get that technology evolves at a fucking rapid pace, but by this time everyone should just be moving to refillable tanks out the box... Sell ink by the bottle, instead of by the cartridge, of which a lot of just becomes e-waste.
@@podboi825 well now they came out with just the ink bays that store loose ink. So I just fill up my printer and I am good to go lol. Shit lasts so much longer too. I didn't have to fill my blacks for like 1.5 years, and this being just a normal smaller printer that I use weekly.
Laser printers cartridges last a really long time as well. I only remember seeing my dad buy ink toner twice in the years we have had our laser printer. Plus toner cartridges don't get clogged like ink cartridges do and you don't have to waste ink by printing test pages every so often to prevent the thing from clogging. Refillable ink cartridges are great but it's still an inkjet that requires all the bullshit maintenance that comes with them@@onlytheneeded412
why? if it can´t be used just make some space for a new stuff just like we do which bring some more people when they see something which can they use now and not long time ago...well actually i remember my dad still sitting on a computer from 2008 or 2010 and bought it 2 years ago for 200 i think (2cores 4 threads 4gb ddr...something and it´s literally unusable somethimes) and said hey! it was a good price! and yes without GPU! so he is stucked with iGPU but well it does not matter at all if he have that garbage or another like 256mb vram ATI something at this point... or laptop from 2004 xin xp 256 mb ram for...80 i think...so i grab 3080 i5 13400 (which it will be upgraded for i9 13900k) and i will give him that machine and i will throw that garbage out of the window without questions
Surely the ink was still fine though? It is after all ink? Couldn't you recycle them?
Oh I thought that was the whole point of the video...
it's amazing he's stayed in business this long with the changing landscape, this opportunity probably means he will get to stay in the game for years to come. best of luck to him.
Yeah, when he opened this store there were dozens of different standards and trends that came and went that he either had to just keep whatever didn't sell on display and hope someone wanted it or thrown it away.
30 grand is probably his monthly rental costs.. the amount he paid for all thaty stuff new was pronanly 100 grand so yeah hes still not in a goodspot
@@thefacelessone74dude he would have never sold half of it so it’s really not that bad

Insanely impressive how well the store owner can match the energy of Linus- genuinely charismatic

yesss followup vid would be very meaningful!

I get that we can't have these everyday, or even every year, but this made me yell and cheer more than any UA-cam content I think I've ever watched. Gonna need a store update soon.
