Or just advocate for everyone to delete the app. Most businesses that deal with secure data ban employees from installing the app on their devices and networks as well as military members are banned from accessing the app through their base's network. Tik Tok really should have been banned worldwide, but we know the CCP stretched it's arm across and stopped that. I literally spend entire days in multi-million dollar companies adding permissions and blocking all of the tik tok servers and checks from reaching the network because of how malicious the app is. Several companies across the country have been attacked by russia and china already due to unsecure devices that use tik tok's kernel-level data-harvesting. So a note on the DVR HDDs... There is a function called "power-up in standby" which most of them have on by default, and in most cases it will prevent a system from using one as a boot drive. hdparm (in linux) allows you to turn that function off. I imagine somebody probably knows a Windowsy way.

I was taught by my machine shop teacher to never wear gloves when using a grinder. If the glove fits too loosely, it can catch on the grinding wheel and pull your hand into the grinding wheel that's rotating at thousands of rpms. I follow my teacher's advice because he had been a machinist for 25 years and still had all of his fingers.
Grinding = gloves drilling/milling/lathe work = no gloves If your glove touches the grinder wheel, it's gonna wear, rip, or tear. If your gloves (or other loose clothing) catches in a lower speed rotating impliment like a drill press, milling machine, or lathe, it will catch, and pull appendages/body parts with it.
@@NickCressman It really depents on the kind of grinder you use. or rather what type of attatchment you use. If you use just a simple grinding stone on it gloves are fine, if you use a really coarse one or even something resembeling a saw (or heaven forbid one of those chainsaw heads) then leave the gloves... if the glove gets caught on just one of the edges it will cost you your hand... or your live. There is a pretty good youtube video out there where a woodworker explains how he almost got decapitated by his grinder because his grindingtool got stuck on a piece of hard wood he was working on and spun all the way from his extended arm up his belly towards hios head within less than a second. Remember kids, a Grinder is calledn an "Angle Grinder" for a reason. you should not use it as general worktool just because "it can" do these jobs. It was designed to grind through bolds, not to cut, saw or polish. The more grid your head on the tool has, the more you should avoid using it.

It makes me happy every time I see someone point out Win+Ctrl+Shift+B. Sometimes your GPU can just kinda glitch out (especially when trying an overclock) and resetting the graphics stack is enough to keep going without resetting the whole PC.
@@_BaileyK It's resetting the graphics stack, basically restarting your GPU/drivers. It won't touch the driver installation. It may crash any open games or 3D applications if they haven't already crashed so be careful.
In my case, my one monitor (purchased as a pair, other one is same situation) keeps not restarting properly unless I fully power it off then back on, and even then it's a gamble. Oddly I used the one that was 'broken' (same reason) for 3 months and then when the good one failed, I swapped and it started working. I now wonder if I can't trick the monitor to cooperate by resetting the GPU this way. EDIT: Nope. Monitor still fucked. Best $600 I wasted on a pair ever.
After building & owning PCs for getting on for 20 years, I'm ashamed to say I've never heard of this shortcut before! & it is useful in some circumstances! I can't believe I learnt something from a bloody TikTok video 😞
If you really wanna hide a folder on the desktop, just give it a blank icon and rename it to a blank character (hold ALT, type 0160 on your number pad and release ALT). No icon, no name. But it can still be found fairly simple if you view you desktop in the explorer.
One point completely missed on the "DVR HDD hack" portion is that often enough, these drives have flags set so that they do NOT just spin up and power on when thrown into a system as is suggested here (perhaps these 3 weren't set up as such). There is a non-insignificant chance that you'll need to create a bootimage to load up a custom utility that can flip these flags so that the drive will then function as normal from there on out. It's been a couple years since I've messed with it, but if memory serves, it's the PUIS (Power Up in Standby) flag specifically that is at "fault". Which, is honestly preferable in terms of actual wear put on the drive given the use case of a DVR.
Also another point not mentioned in either the TikTok or by Linus is that you really should look at the manufactured date on the label. If it says it was made in 2006 or some other absurdly old number, then it'll have a 500GB max drive unless it was user replaced (which is highly unlikely. I've seen 1 replaced drive out of about 15 DVRs). And the quality of that drive won't be the best for everyday use. The later you go after 2010, the higher the chance you get a larger capacity drive, and a greater chance that the drive will still be good.

I've been teaching coworkers about the WIN+CTRL+SHIFT+B shortcut for years now! Super handy when your laptop and Windows does not agree on your monitor setup when docking/undocking. Saves the end-user from having to restart. 9/10 from me aswell!
I wish I knew this a while ago. Sometimes my primary monitor doesn't display when I wake my pc up and the only "fix" I've found is to just reset my pc. If this fixes that, that'd save a lot of hassle.
The last tip is actually very useful if you know when to use it. (Which the tictoc didn't explain) For an example, some surface laptops, the screen doesn't turn back on after you wake it from sleep, and doing that fixes it. Or when you add another display and Windows goes strange, you can do that to restart it.
In Dylans video the dvrs he showing look to be about 10+ years newer then the ones Linus picked up. I'm sure that makes all the difference. Again though finding a few year old model at a thrift store is hard to come by I would imagine, Alot of times the companies want these boxes back if they have not been in service for a long time, probably to reuse the hard drives.
for those DVR hard drives he specifically had an old directv one, which are just plastic and super easy to get into (speaking from experience). for the metal ones, you could also use a tin snips and cut from the ventilation holes to start as well
15:11 should be an 11/10. i was having issues with my gpu a few months ago and ctrl+shift+win+b was invaluable for troubleshooting it at the time. it's especially useful these days when most people are trying to keep their current gpu until prices become reasonable again.
I came here to say this - at my last job we had some really crappy intel integrated optiplex machines and the drivers were ALWAYS bugging out, everyone just rebooted when they ran into issues but after snagging this shortcut it saved a lot of time. Definitely a 10/10 for me.
Pretty sure even magnets that powerful won't actually damage the drive *physically*. It would still just wipe the data... which you're going to be doing soon anyway... For perspective... A fairly old school data privacy technique for platter drives was to embed powerful (electro) magnets in the frame of any exit from the room, eg a door. Removing any drive or device containing a drive without proper shielding would immediately wipe the contents of the drive with no input from the user.
3:37 *Linus after manhandling the drives like they are window doors in a hurricane*: "Oh no they're probably fine, the way they validate these things..." 4:28 *Linus after drives fail*: "Yeah that's gonna cost Dylan a few points..."
*Linus: works with pc parts daily* *Also Linus: Puts two giant magnets on either side of a box so he can remove the hard drive, likely damaging it in the process.*
@@Nickwilde7755 magnets will erase them, if they did not spin up, there was mechanical damage... though, using hammer to extract them might not have helped
4:01 i did this a lot a few years ago when my dad threw away loads of tech with hardrives in, trust me when i say all you need is something metal that doesnt bend, and time, plus its way more fun ripping apart than carefully disassembling, i got 3tb for free no heavy machinery required, just a hammer, a screwdriver and a few tears
Whoa, that last tip actually resolved(at least temporarily, who knows how long it'll last) a recurring issue I have had for years with weird graphical artifacting on my computer that I haven't been able to fix. I knew it had something to do with my GPU and probably it's drivers, but nothing I've done has even temporarily addressed the problem. Finally I have a way to at least alleviate the issue!
I have random garbage happening like my receiver not being recognized by the TV after years without a problem and then sometimes working again or right now after using the same setup for 8 years suddenly the HDMI port on the PC has no audio. These things are such junk. I am sure it will then just randomly work again one day.
11:06 I think he was distracted but, when you edit the code of a page and refresh, the code goes back to normal, so that wasn't gonna work. But all in all, good video :)
15:23 From a discussion with an AMD Radeon driver engineer, it does NOT restart the graphics driver. It does appear to discard the desktop surface buffer and re-create the allocation from DWM (on a healthy system the desktop goes black for a second).
9:53 A long time ago in High school, using the Change Icon trick, We used to make Batch files on the computers in the computer labs running either W98 or XP, I can't remember which OS The one we did the most was a batch file that would endlessly open new Solitaire games and overload the computer so it had to be rebooted. We would save this batch file deep in the PC files, Make a shortcut to it on the Desktop so we could change the Icon it used making sure to pick the Solitaire Icon, and then Rename it to Solitaire. Anytime someone decided to try to play Solitaire instead of working on their School work they would crash the PC they were using, iirc we also did one for Minesweeper I remember another time a friend used the MSG command on command prompt to send a message to every PC on the school network at the same time, He sent Hello World and then the entire school network crashed shortly after lmao Another thing we did one time that has nothing to do with Icon changing, was we installed the Original PC version of Halo on the schools file network which allowed us to run it on Multiple PCs in the computer lab at the same time with the one install, So when we would finish our assignments for the class we would all sit there and start playing Halo CE
Lol, I remember the Desktop Screenshot too, that was another good one Another game I remember we did was Chex Quest, it was pretty much a Doom clone that came in boxes of Chex Cereal that we put onto the server Another thing someone did one time was I guess on PCs back then, if you took the little "belt" off of the CD tray spindle the PC would endless try to Reel in the CD tray and eventually crash the PC and give up

Honestly a great concept for a series. Tackling popular questions, seeing as the videos themselves have a shit load of views, but greatly improving upon the advice and advising further. And it's all guaranteed to be beneficial seeing as they are popular topics to begin with. So many birds with one metaphorical stone.
And if it's not your hand that's pulled into the wheel, "degloving" fingers is a very real injury
That shit keeps me up at night imagining it
@@Spideryote
Ah shet, I'm uncomfortable around work tools now
Grinding = gloves
drilling/milling/lathe work = no gloves
If your glove touches the grinder wheel, it's gonna wear, rip, or tear.

How would you fix this
@@sebaschan-uwu You use a boot image such as Hirens and disable the PUIS flag.
So that it raises the chances of that working?
can't you just use dban?
Also another point not mentioned in either the TikTok or by Linus is that you really should look at the manufactured date on the label. If it says it was made in 2006 or some other absurdly old number, then it'll have a 500GB max drive unless it was user replaced (which is highly unlikely. I've seen 1 replaced drive out of about 15 DVRs). And the quality of that drive won't be the best for everyday use. The later you go after 2010, the higher the chance you get a larger capacity drive, and a greater chance that the drive will still be good.

DDU every driver update and install only the latest driver at any one time. FIxed my GPU issues with my 2080 super.
has it worked long ish term?
Since this is from 6 months ago: Was the fix permanent?
@@ripAfatCone cool, thanks for the tip!
"it's gonna be interesting... Unlike our sponsor"
I can't believe that cablemod agreed on this segway xD
Now I'm picturing a bunch of cables riding along on a stupid two wheeled vehicle.
@@TurinAlexander HAHAHHAHAH 🔝🔝
@@TurinAlexander you know what happened to the guy that bought the Segway, company don't you? It cost him everything!
11:06 I think he was distracted but, when you edit the code of a page and refresh, the code goes back to normal, so that wasn't gonna work. But all in all, good video :)
That's what I thought

"I wouldn't pay $10 for a 500 GB drive."
Linus, have you seen hard drive prices nowadays?
My dad got a ssd 500gigs for bout 10 kwd which is i think is about 40 ish dollars so not that expensive
He probably meant "$10 for a used 500GB drive."
For a 500 Gb drive that’s been used for a while in bad conditions.. it’s not that great
@@Soosss If you're just putting games on it (or any data easily found elsewhere), why not. For anything else, even 2 To at 10$ is a big nope.
Even so; 500gb isn't very useful nowadays. 😒
I've never laughed so hard watching someone use an angle grinder with such blatant disregard for their own safety or how to use the tool.
i.e. everybody in my welding class
As a welder myself, I wanted to see his shirt catch fire. I've caught myself on fire a few times doing that same thing,.
If you like that, you’ll love official duck studios. Seriously. Just endangering themselves with guns and power tools constantly.
Not wearing gloves was smart though.
@@TheAdatto I sense sarcasm in your comment...
15:23 From a discussion with an AMD Radeon driver engineer, it does NOT restart the graphics driver. It does appear to discard the desktop surface buffer and re-create the allocation from DWM (on a healthy system the desktop goes black for a second).
basically it alerts windows to a potential graphics issue, and does, in most cases, force the driver to restart
@@timnone2924 consideing how solid the adrenalin software is, probably going to be pretty handy.
On a not healthy system it will create weird artifacts and system instability. It will create more problems than it solves.
9:53 A long time ago in High school, using the Change Icon trick, We used to make Batch files on the computers in the computer labs running either W98 or XP, I can't remember which OS
The one we did the most was a batch file that would endlessly open new Solitaire games and overload the computer so it had to be rebooted. We would save this batch file deep in the PC files, Make a shortcut to it on the Desktop so we could change the Icon it used making sure to pick the Solitaire Icon, and then Rename it to Solitaire. Anytime someone decided to try to play Solitaire instead of working on their School work they would crash the PC they were using, iirc we also did one for Minesweeper
I remember another time a friend used the MSG command on command prompt to send a message to every PC on the school network at the same time, He sent Hello World and then the entire school network crashed shortly after lmao
Another thing we did one time that has nothing to do with Icon changing, was we installed the Original PC version of Halo on the schools file network which allowed us to run it on Multiple PCs in the computer lab at the same time with the one install, So when we would finish our assignments for the class we would all sit there and start playing Halo CE
Lol, I remember the Desktop Screenshot too, that was another good one
Another game I remember we did was Chex Quest, it was pretty much a Doom clone that came in boxes of Chex Cereal that we put onto the server
Another thing someone did one time was I guess on PCs back then, if you took the little "belt" off of the CD tray spindle the PC would endless try to Reel in the CD tray and eventually crash the PC and give up
