Yey, a deep dive! I am finishing my professional doctorate in psychology, my 5th higher education degree in Psychology, and majority of what i learnt is from you, Dr Kirk. Thank you Dr Kirk, maybe you could start issuing certificates upon successful completion of the graduation exam following your online school of life. ❤
I love these kind of episodes. I went to school for computer science and thought I just didn't like schooling/lectures.. turns out i just picked a subject matter that I wasn't interested in
Thank you Dr Honda! I have only made it through half of this video and I have learnt so much, I even studied psychology for years and i think i learnt more in 30 minutes from your video than from university.
Thank you Dr. Kirk, great episode. As a psychologist I'm always learning and refreshing a lot of knowledge and insight :) I would love to hear more about "empaths" and "highly sensitive person" labels because they seem to by as misunderstood as narcissism... Have a great day!
Thanks for this video. It seems like exercising the phenomenological empathy is almost the very opposite of what is claimed as an intrinsic virtue by 'empaths' on UA-cam: instead of assuming you know what the other feels, and making that assumption your identity, you assume that you are like an alien, that you know nothing, and that becomes the threshold of listening🤔
I found myself actually thinking about the difference between empathy and sympathy for some time. I had a falling out with a friend who I couldn’t relate to. I was confused whether I couldn’t sympathize or empathize with her, as I considered myself highly empathetic. This has been so helpful to really breakdown that I couldn’t cognitively empathize and this resulted in a lack of sympathy as well.
This was very informative and interesting. I don’t know how you can talk about textbook info and keep it engaging. The ending summed it up nicely. And I like the music too.
I don't like contemporary definitions for Empathy, Sympathy, Antipathy, and Apathy. While I have to adhere to conventional definitions for writing, to be understood, in my mind I prefer a different perspective on the definitions: Empathy: The process of using one's own experiences and emotions to understand and connect with what another person might be feeling, without necessarily aligning with or opposing their emotions. Sympathy: An emotional response characterized by agreement or alignment with another person’s feelings, without personally experiencing or sharing those feelings. Antipathy: An emotional response characterized by emotional disagreement or disconnection from another person’s feelings, reflecting a lack of alignment or opposition to their emotional state. Apathy: An absence of emotional engagement or response, particularly in situations where emotional involvement might be expected or observed in others.
Freud and Lacan were actually against empathy....as the idea of psychoanalisis is that the therapist has to be in an objective position. Being empathetic for them is to think you understand the patient morals, emotions etc...which is basically not objective.
Yes, and since then it has become clear that it’s impossible for a therapist to be truly objective. So, it is important for mental health professionals to be aware of their countertransference. Some would also argue that using empathy to solidify unconditional positive regard can be healing for clients.
I think psychoanalysts can try to remain objective and impartial but that wouldn't mean they wouldn't have empathy they would just choose to not externalize their empathy whereas, Dr. Honda might be suggesting that in today's society Freud might have a better understanding of the benefits of empathy and perhaps be more comfortable disclosing they have empathy at least to the general public, but probably would still refrain from disclosing that to clients. Psychoanalyst tend to take notes which I imagine would include a lot of judgement and impressions. Even if your documentation aims to be objective it's impossible to be completely objective.
I love you content and I’m a Patreon too I hope you don’t mind me saying this and it doesn’t sound mean. But… you often use “Venn Diagram” as a synonym for “intersection”. It’s not that because a Venn diagram could also depict 2 or more sets that don’t intersect at all. With all due respect and much love.
It seems like it fits because he’s explaining the similarities and differences between different definitions of empathy between Carl Rogers and the Penguin dictionary. He was explaining the similarities and differences between the definitions, which could be made into a Venn diagram.

What is that song at the end? I love it!

Mirror neurons?
