  • This video compares how well ceramic tiles stick to a glossy granite using two different methods. 1) Using an unmodified thinset. 2) Using a modified thinset. The results are clear. This video will be highly useful to anyone wanting to set tiles over existing granite countertops, fireplace surrounds, etc... Enjoy! - Kent

    Thanks for doing this research. I am getting ready to do the same thing on a kitchen back splash. I had suspected that your method would be the way to go and you confirmed it. Thanks again.

    Great video! I'm planning on doing this procedure around our black granite fireplace. Do you know if the adhesive will hold up well against the heat? Thank you.

      I wouldn't do the tiles on the inside of the fireplace, but on the outside they will stick fine if done properly. Make sure it's clean, wet it down well, removing all the dust. Wet the tiles down too just prior to sticking on using a thin-set mortar with the acrylic fortifier added to the mix

    Did you add acrylic fortifier to thinset? Or a concrete? Or could I use both in this situation?
    Awesome job btw.

    Nice video. I have matte granite. I was thinking of sanding with 60 grit and then applying a tile primer. Wouldn't thin be easier and as effective as scoring the granite?

      I don’t know. I do know roughing up the granite is kind of a pain in the butt. Why not give it a try on a test area see how it goes? Empirical method. The proof will be in the pudding. if you’re not satisfied then you might have to rough it up.

    What did you add to your thin set? You mentioned add mix. Is this something you can buy at the big box stores?

      Concrete Bonding Adhesive and Acrylic Fortifier, available at Home Depot QUIKRETE & Sika are two companies that make Concrete Acrylic Fortifiers, an acrylic resin admixture designed to enhance bonding and water resistance of concrete patching materials, stucco, surface bonding cement, thin-set mortars and tile grouts. Do a Google search and you'll find it! Have fun!

    what about an UNglossy granite that has been smoothed but not polished? I used polymer modified thinset (powdered - mix it yourself with water) and it did not adhere to the stone as I had hoped. I had a heck of a time chiseling it off the backs of the glass mosaic tile I used! This is for an outdoor application - a mosaicked stone bench that will get heavy use. Should there have been a scratch coat? I thought with the porosity I'd be OK. Can I add this additive to the polymer modified thinset I have instead of water? I hope you see this, but the last comment and response was 5 yrs ago. thanks for the video. I will watch more of your videos.

      Baily - No scratch coat needed. I used a 'Sika' brand Concrete Bonding Adhesive / Acrylic Fortifier. Google search "Masonry Bonding Agent." I like the Sika brand. Comes in a plastic bottle with yellow, red, and blue colors. Say "BOND IT ONCE" on the bottle. Quickcrete has one too. Any of those will work GREAT. I added almost 100% acrylic fortifier (instead of water) to the dry powdered thin-set mortar in the video. Try it! Do a test. I bet ya uh hundred bucks it will stick like gang busters! Give it a try Baily. You'll get very long lasting result rain or shine. - Kent

    2nd viewing. I have to do my fireplace surround with your method. How do I contain the dust as the fireplace is in the living room? Any suggestions?

      the dust is a nightmare! I taped up plastic and it was terrible . Just be ready for a super challenging task and lots of cleaning. Once that's done you'll be happy. I wish I had better advise. I just want to be honest about it.

    Hi! Do you think this would be the same on quartz calacatta?

    • @KentSchneeveis
      @KentSchneeveis  Місяць тому

      I looked at it. I can't be 100% sure. but if it's roughed up I be it will. I know... do a test - empirical and see 'sticks' .... if it does move forward. You can do it!

    what do you mean by modifed and unmodified tile?

    • @KentSchneeveis
      @KentSchneeveis  6 років тому +1

      Modified means I added acrylic fortifier to the thinset

      @@KentSchneeveis So just to be clear, unmodified was just concrete bonding adhesive and modified was concrete bonding adhesive plus acrylic fortifier. Yes?

  • @CookieZ3353

    Doesn't help that your sample granite piece moves when you are hitting the tiles. Are you going to name the modifier that you've added? Or is it a secret?

      I believe it was a Concrete Bonding Adhesive and Acrylic Fortifier made by Sika. But anything like this will work. I think I got it at the Home Depot www.homedepot.com/p/Sika-1-Qt-Concrete-Bonding-Adhesive-and-Acrylic-Fortifier-471643/205116870

      No, these are ceramic tiles put on using a cementisious thin-set mortar
