Home RenoVision DIY you’ve just answered my first question! Much appreciated. I plan to do this in my kitchen, with the electric turned off, lol, and will let you know how it goes. So thrilled about this!
Thank for this video, what happen if the existing surface is vinyl ( with some crack) do we need to remove the vinyl? Or keep it and use the Mapei product? Thank you
Jeff, I genuinely like you. You seem like an affable guy with good humor who enjoys his profession without taking it too seriously. Thanks for making these videos. They're a pleasure to watch and learn from.
Can I just say how awesome this is! I purchased EVERYTHING in this video and did a subway tile over my old kitchen tile! Went exactly as yours. Thanks for this video!!
You are my favorite youtuber... soothing to listen to, not annoying whatsoever. And you are major informative, my wife thinks I know how to do everything.. I don't, I just watch your videos when I do home reno
Hello Jeff. The 583 dislikes must be all contractors. Very well made video. Direct, concise, and to the point. You explain and educate, before, during, and after. Thank you! God bless you and your family and everyone and their families on your channel!
This is why this Contractor--builder/home Renovator/Home improvement expert, is a winner! he has integrity and he genuinely cares about advising people with the pertinent details. Also, he's professional and neat with his projects.
I am a DIYer, and I love this video. Thank you for posting. Some of us cannot afford contractors, let alone one that can to do a good and finish it 100%. I like that you show exactly what to purchase, such as the mortar, primer, etc. and all the tools you use, not to mention the tricks of how to do it properly without killing yourself!
I did this with a similar product for my shower and tub surround. No demolition and works like a charm in a wet area. I've been using this process for 15 years.
I've been sitting on a beautiful new tile backsplash for 3 years now because of the cost of hiring somebody to do it for me. I thought the old tile would have to be removed, etc. and all that goes with it. Now I think I can do this by myself, just following what you did, and finally get that new backsplash installed!
There are places on the bucket lid to make 1/4-1/2” cuts. This allows the lid to slide over the lip on the bucket. Ive hung wallpaper for 43 years, and it took me a long time to finally figured out what those places on the lid were for. I love your videos and have watched quite a few. When I prepped for wallpaper, I had to float walls and fix joints. I wasn’t very fast but I learned a lot watching the videos. Now I’m going to tape and float my sons kitchen. Thanks again!
Thank you this is exactly what I was looking for. I was going to tile a thin sub board and glue it up but you just solved everything. Old school dad was trying to get me to pull off the existing tile because that was the correct way. OMG welcome "new products" . Already looked on Lowes and this product is around $32.00 for a gallon. You have the gift of gab so explaining was amazing.
Jeff I just started watching your channel and I want to thank you for all the great Ideas to save time and money. I especially like the fact that you are not afraid of sharing the deep contractor secrets.
I’ve laid stone or ceramic tile four times and it’s my least favourite Reno to do-because of pulling up the old flooring/shower tile, etc. I have all the supplies to redo our backsplash(leftover from our last house’s kitchen Reno) but didn’t want to go through the disruption of tearing out the old. This video is such good news!
Love Love Love your diy videos! So easy to follow with clear concise instructions! Kudos to you Jeff and who cares what those "contractors" think - just keep those videos coming because they are a blessing to all of us diy folks! THANK YOU!
This man knows what he's doing. I learned from a tile man (brother-in-law) exactly how they really do a tile job whether it's flooring, showers, or back splashes and from what I see on this video and Jeff's other videos they most closely match what I learned from him. Right down to using an angle grinder with a diamond blade to make smaller cuts and using a cheap tile scoring cutter for the larger cuts.
Jeff, you can open that can top easier by cutting the slots on the cover with a blade, then it's easy to remove the top..Same for paint buckets, removing the tops..they also have a special tool with a hook, that grabs the cover after you cut the slots and pulls it up easily :)..You are doing a great job :) !!
I have been wanting to tackle our backsplash for years but was overwhelmed by the process but this is the perfect solution .... Thank you for the tutorial!!
People look at me as if I was crazy when I told them that I was installing my new Mosiac Tile over the existing tile. Regardless of what opinions I was hearing I went ahead and bought the Eco Prime Grip and tried your method, and let me tell you, it worked out GREAT! The EPG really does stick to non-porous material and adhesive mortar by Mapei bonded to it great as well. Really happy about the results. Thanks for taking the time in teaching us on how to do the almost impossible. P.S. I also left the power on, yikes lol!
Hello Joe, what tile was originally on the wall? I put on marble mosaic with the incorrect mortar and grout and it totally changed the tile. (DISTORTED, MULTILATED, DISCOLOURED, CORRUPTED) so now I want to put the same tile over it with improve mortar and grout. I'm worried it will be too thick, but after 10 months of looking for tile, this tile goes really well with my refaced cupboards and new laminate countertop so I would love to keep this. Maybe I should take it all out and redo? Do you think subway tile would be a better choice over the marble mosaic? Would greatly appreciate hearing from you. I am still waiting to hear from Jeff too.
Sir, thank you so much for this video. That Eco Prime Grip saved me so much trouble with a job. I would've never had the trust in just priming a wall to hold the new tile. That stuff really does work. Thanks again.
THIS IS FANTASTIC! I have plaster walls abd no contractor wants to deal with it. I am definately going to do this method. YOU ARE A TILE-HERO. Thank you~
OMG, I have been stressing about what to do with my backsplash. This is an excellent idea and I love how you trimmed the edges, I was wondering how you were going to close that gap. Thank you so much, this was great.
OMG 😲 So I am having a house built, my first home! It was going to cost me extra money (of course) to get the backsplash that I wanted, so I decided to stick with the same tile I am getting in the floor which is a 16x16 tile... on the backsplash 😖 I was planning to move in and immediately tear it out and put up what I want, THIS RIGHT HERE is gonna save not only my money but my sanity!!!! Thank you sooo much!
Hi Jeff! First I hope this comment find you healthy. 2nd I wanted to say I have watched days of your videos. Im building a not so tiny tiny house and anytime I get in a little bit of a situation I find you on UA-cam. Love your videos and thanks for all the special tips.
This video inspired me to redo our kitchen before painting. Your tips and advice were near perfect. I used the same supplies and steps it came out great. We went from dark brown square turd tile to white beveled subway tile. Thanks for this vid and the inspiration!
You’re such a natural in front of the camera. So glad I found this video I finally have a case to redo my kid’s hideous bathroom where the previous owner tiled ugly floral tiles ABOVE a wood paneling!
Well done brother. I'm looking forward to doing my own backsplash for my kitchen. It's amazing how something so relatively simple and easy to do, can be so costly for homebuyers who are duped by their builders to take their cheap products and very little labour as upgrades. 😒 Thanks again for your help brother. I appreciate it.
Great info. I followed your advice and paid the hefty $40 for the Eco Prim Grip - it did work. I wish they offered it in smaller containers. BTW - Home Depot doesn't carry it. Only Lowes, at least that's how it is in our area. And no Ultra lite, either. So, I used the usual mortar and it worked. I got the tiles done. Looks great. Thank you.
How did the tile holding up? Ian about to lay tiles over tiles too. Some of my friends can’t believe I am doing it they don’t think that is the legit way!
Great video! The only thing that has been holding me back from installing subway tile was all of the demo work that I thought I had to do. This changes everything!
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY Can the same process work over painted drywall? Wanted to do the small area between my kitchen counters and cabinets but don't want to remove the drywall if possible. Can I primer over the painted drywall? Or does it need to be sanded down? Removed all together? And just a side not, your videos are amazing! Had a leaking shower upstairs and remodeled it last weekend and did my first tile job thanks to watching your video on shower tiles. Just a simple marble ceramic tile in a subway pattern, but turned out pretty good (not as nice as yours or nearly as fast, but I'll take it for my first try)
This is the project I've been putting off for so long. My kitchen has a tile backsplash that got out of control. Some needs to be removed and I am worried about replacing drywall, but now I know that tiling over tile is a thing and I can do this! I need new kitchen counter top first, and hoping the tile doesn't need to come off first. But this is a real relief knowing the backsplash can be done this way. Thanks!
It's a rare circumstance I would tile over tile on a FLOOR, let alone a backsplash, so nice job showing it's possible...saves a TON of headache with demo !

Oh my gosh. You are officially my new best friend! I got this- I love doing projects myself- and have hired out jobs so many times thinking tiling jobs too intimidating bc I dont have big tile cutters- didn’t go to tile college- haha- This is amazing! Thank you so much.
OMG.... I think I love you. Doing research on how to tile & wasn't looking forward to removing the old tile, even though they are on brick walls. I can do this !
Absolutely great advice !!! Saving me time, money, hassle and labor !!! Thanks !!! Using hot glue on the edge piece reminds me of the movie, Matilda !!! when the used car salesman dad used industrial strength glue to attach a bumper to a car !!! Lol
Oh Jeff, why do you do this to me! I NEED to see the after! The finished after! With the grout and all! 😭 Because it's such a good how to, the disappointment will pass... Thank you, you just saved me a whole lot of work!!
You are a genius!! I am very handy but just dont know of all the different products out there, this is amazing..I just added more cabinets and wanted to use different tile for backsplash but DREADED cutting everything out. WOW what a video. Great job!
I've always thought I could do a backslash by myself. These videos show that there is a bit more to it than I thought...but I'm confident that if I follow the helpful tips shown here, I can do it....
I just love watching your videos. You make everything you do so easy. I wish i can do them as easy as you do. Or you can come over our house and renovate our place... anyway great job as usual!!
I was a professional house painter for 49 yrs. And though I didn't like getting roped into all around handyman style jobs, I would occasionally let my guard down and say yes to things outside of my usual realm of services offered. Kind of depended on just how much there was to it. I only did a few small tile jobs in my day, and so can't say I'm knowledgeable in the field. I do however appreciate just how cool that primer you used to get the new tile to bond was, and i really also liked that mastic, you're right, it's thick and yet has an open time which keeps it from setting too quickly! There's nothing like a little wiggle room that you get from a forgiving product that allows room for mistakes or just playing around with it until you've got it exactly like you like it. The glue gun is also a nice touch for quick and and easy installation of your aluminum trim! Overall, a very smooth and slick job, altogether!looked good and I enjoyed learning about the new technology, as you put it! Keep 'em coming.
Glad I saw this. I have the same situation and was thinking how do I go about tiling over this fake tile board without removing my cabinets and taking this off without destroying the wall. I find this video on UA-cam, Thank you sir.
Easy way to open the can is you cut down the little tabs on the edge of the lid downward. Then it allows the lid to flex as you open but will still seal when you close it.
Thank you for this "Great info; "Home RenoVision..." I love your DIY videos. As a homeowner you’ve definitely saved my family and I money 🤑🤑🤑. During the unfortunate quarantine we’ve used many of your videos to do some home improvement projects. 😊 Thank you!
Thanks for all the great videos! Quick question here! *** Quick background: I just got a new apartment and I am trying to renovate it in the most efficient and cost effective way. A part of my project is tile over tile! I have zero experience in tiling, but I am a quick learner. I also DIY absolutely everything that I can! *** Here is the question: You use different material for tiling in different videos, for example, type 1 adhesive, ultralite pro mortar, and cement. How do I know which one best fits my project? Again, thanks for all the great videos! I am learning so much from you!
Thanks! OMG I love this video, I was ready to start hacking away at the old backsplash tile, perfect timing for me to see this! Couple of questions for you, Would this method work for 1/4 inch thick glass tile? Would the back buttering work for the whole area?
This video was very helpful Buddy saved me thousands of dollars. I did it myself as to have some other guy come in and do the same thing I did and probably add some extra things on top of that that I didn't need LOL
When opening your prime grip pail...there are small slots around the entire lid..get a five in one painters tool, an use the sharp pointed side of the tool to vertically make a slit in each groove!… yur lid will come off easily!
thank you so much for the great information. Husband tiled kitchen backsplash, did a great job, but want to change, and this is s great way to do it!! thank you again!
Not really fond of the metal frame on the exposed edges. Any other suggestions to cover the exposed edge? Thanks in advance. I was about to start demo’ing current backsplash and this looks fantastic
Man. I wish I had watched this one as well after I watched your subway tile backsplash video. I would have known to push the tiles away and prevent adhesive in the grout lines. It was not a bad job for laying tiles for the first time. All thanks to you. Kind regards.
I would assume the same process over a formica backsplash, or would it be worth pulling the formica off? Also, best reno videos on UA-cam, great job Jeff!
i was about to take a sledgehammer to my kitchen wall until i saw your video. I can't thank you enough for posting this. This has saved me tons of work taking out the wall with the tile that was absolutely not wanted to be seperated from this drywall :) AND putting a new drywall in... I will embark on this project tiling over the old stuff!!! Thanks again for your funny insightfull video's - you are awesome!
Does Eco prime work to tile over a laminate countertop? Loved the video, I've done a lot of tiling but learned some techniques - very thorough, THANKS!!
My existing back-splash is sheet arborite or formica (same as and matched the old counters) which is very well adhered to a plaster & lathe wall. Probably installed in the late 60's. The formica sheet even extends under the upper cabinets, so I'd have to start by cutting it out with a multi-tool. Plaster & lathe removal is much nastier than drywall removal and then I'd have to deal with the thickness differences to install new drywall. Until now, that's why I have never replaced it. Would the MAPEI Eco Prim Grip work as well over the formica for a back-splash tile similar to yours?
This looks STUNNING!! A few questions... For someone renting an extremely outdated home (with the landlords approval, of course) 1. Can Peel & Stick Backsplash be placed over existing kitchen tile backsplash? 2. What’s an affordable & durable way to update tile countertops? 3. The kitchen flooring is laminate or vinyl with tears, it’s outdated & ugly... What is an affordable way to update it? 4. The kitchen cabinets have multiple layers of paint (they look terrible) how can I affordably update them? 5. The bathroom - the entire shower is cover in yellow/brown tiles as well as the Countertop & Backsplash on the vanity... how can I update those affordably with something durable? Hope to get a response, thanks in advance!!
I had a nauseating mirror backsplash and I literally just crossed my fingers 4 years ago and did a subway tile backsplash right over the top !!!!! And it’s worked perfectly- Just like he said we can rely on technology now more than technique. When I started I had no one to turn to to ask if this would actually work or if the tiles would just slip off the mirror. But I also knew I couldn’t smash the mirror and rip it out before I applied tile because… Glass shards everywhere!!! Anyway I’m happy to say it’s gorgeous and it’s held up fine and it hasn’t slipped at all and it’s a great improvement - thanks for this video!! I wish I had that primer tip, but it was fine.
The indentations on the sides of the bucket lid are for cutting. Back in the day we used either a giant flat head screwdriver and hammer or knife hitting downward. Today i use giant meat scissors to clip each one. They also sell a bucket lid removal tool.
If you want to store the product for a long time i would be careful that its still air tight. The paint colors of your living room for example. My paint buckets sit already for years in storage and i still use them after patching a hole in the wall.
Right. I knew by the way you were struggling and fighting with that simple lid that you were only trying to get viewers to come up with a better answer than what is printed in the directions by the manufacturer. On the side of the container. Along with the correct procedures for application of the product...
Great video. I have done plenty of backsplashes but i always like to see how other professionals handle their installations. Very informative. Thanks for sharing

Absolutely great advice !!! Saving me time, money, hassle and labor !!! Thanks !!! Using hot glue on the edge piece reminds me of the movie, Matilda !!! when the used car salesman dad used industrial strength glue to attach a bumper to a car !!! Lol
How can you not love this guy?
Oh Jeff, why do you do this to me! I NEED to see the after! The finished after! With the grout and all! 😭 Because it's such a good how to, the disappointment will pass... Thank you, you just saved me a whole lot of work!!
Hi Claudia, Check out the reality renovision video done in the kitchen to save thousands. Before and after pics available. Cheers!
You are a genius!! I am very handy but just dont know of all the different products out there, this is amazing..I just added more cabinets and wanted to use different tile for backsplash but DREADED cutting everything out. WOW what a video. Great job!
I keep running into this guy on the youtube. Love him. So happy when I search some DIY stuff and its Jeff!
I've always thought I could do a backslash by myself. These videos show that there is a bit more to it than I thought...but I'm confident that if I follow the helpful tips shown here, I can do it....
Thank you for doing these videos! I love learning new techniques, and I really appreciate your good natured approach Mr. Thorman!
I was going to buy a wet saw, but not now. I love that simple tile cutter you have. Quick, easy, and no mess.
Lol i siad the same thing ,,,we dont need videos we need more Jeffs,, he will never be out of work.
I appreciate this channel so much. Your videos are some of the best on the internet!
WOW! I just learned something new! You have saved me so much time!
Thank you 😊
Glad I saw this.
Excellent instruction for the job, but my all-time favorite is STILL the 'black eye' video!
Thank you for this "Great info; "Home RenoVision..."
I'm a retired & "Body Broken" multi app: home reno contractor who's used proper procedures, tools, safety, materials and technics, for the past 45 odd yrs.
I have to Say...I couldn't see "Any Faults or Problems with the processes you used!
PS. It takes' but a "Little Trip"...To connect with "Live or Die Power!" Eh!
PPS. I'll be using this tiling process "next week!"
Thank's Again...(On Ca.)
Thank you for explaining why you do what you do! I appreciate it!
The eco prime grip cover has vertical lines, cut them with a blade and you won't have a hard time opening it.
I love your DIY videos. As a homeowner you’ve definitely saved my family and I money 🤑🤑🤑. During the unfortunate quarantine we’ve used many of your videos to do some home improvement projects. 😊 Thank you!
"Technology, not Technique". Now here's a man that knows "time is money" Bravo, Sir.
Thanks brother. Saved me 1500....
you need to cut a little on the sides of lid where the markings are at that way you can flex the lid i use them alot
Thay sell a lid wrench also fo a couple of bucks
esli gonzalez - I agree. You take a set of diagonal pliers or snips and cut the indents around the lid then they pry open easy as can be.
Right after the says he doesn't need technique, he felt the need for it. 😂
@@rickcrawford7307 I worked an a&w and they used one for their pickle buckets :)
Couple of questions for you,
Would this method work for 1/4 inch thick glass tile?
Would the back buttering work for the whole area?
This video was very helpful Buddy saved me thousands of dollars. I did it myself as to have some other guy come in and do the same thing I did and probably add some extra things on top of that that I didn't need LOL
Where was this video before I demo’d my WHOLE bathroom
Lol aw man hahaha
same.
Fr gonna be me..good thing I found this
@@kimcircagirl474 LOL!!! That is HILARIOUS!
didn’t he mention that there’s too much moisture there for this method?
thank you for this ... you've helped me prove to my husband that we can tile over our ugly tile backsplash
Haha same here !! Best feeling ever lol
Thanks David, so much to share so little time. Cheers!
I would assume the same process over a formica backsplash, or would it be worth pulling the formica off? Also, best reno videos on UA-cam, great job Jeff!
great idea with the aluminum trim at the end. much easier than the trim you embed under the outside edge....welll done dude.
We need more people like you in this world.
i was about to take a sledgehammer to my kitchen wall until i saw your video.
I did the same thin in my bathroom amazing .
Love your channel i saved a lot of money.
Congratulations, that is why we are her.Cheers!
Thanks for educating homeowners who want to know how to dyi!
this man was amazing, i have also many talent for everything, he is inspiring me to be better..
"Now, if you don't feel comfortable playing around with live power, turn it off!" 😂 You're cracking me up, man! LOL
This looks STUNNING!!
A few questions...
For someone renting an extremely outdated home (with the landlords approval, of course)
Hope to get a response, thanks in advance!!
all of that information is in the videos. the secret to affordability is to do it yourself. Cheers!
You are awesome. This is exactly what I been waiting to do. Quick question, I have glass backsplash, does the process is the same?
Same question
Love the aluminum angle trim! 👍🏼
Thanks for displaying the tools you used. So helpful. Thanks Jennifer. Decatur GA USA
Nice job. If you take your utility knife and cut thru each dimple around the rim of the lid, the top comes off real easy.
LOL, I know but I was curious what people would recommend. Cheers!
If you want to store the product for a long time i would be careful that its still air tight. The paint colors of your living room for example. My paint buckets sit already for years in storage and i still use them after patching a hole in the wall.
This product has a rubber gasket in the lid. so a good pounding and it will last a long time. Cheers!
Said djinit sa.
This guy is top class!
Agree 100%
yep
.aint he.tehehe
Came across this by chance. It's just what I needed to complete my project. thank you!
Hi Marilyn, glad to be of some help. feel free to ask questions if you run into any challenges. Cheers!
Love it! This guy’s heavy breathing is my 2019 reno mood.
Love you how you took your time and gave precise and detailed, step by step instructions. Makes me extremely confident that I can do this. Thank you. Awesome tutorial.😉
You can do it for sure. Cheers!
These videos are great! Question: the cement, is that one you could use in a shower, too? In an effort to safe on buying multiple adhesive compounds.
