  • My Mister is a korean tv drama series that's a sleeper hit on netflix and has developed a cult following around the world thanks to it's class!
    It's also my favourite drama series of all time!
    In this video we'll go over my favourite scenes from My Mister Episode 3...a series of scenes I'd probably call "Setting Boundaries" because the two main characters start to establish a relationship that's forcing them to address their internal dilemmas...
    Lee Ji-An needs money fast to keep her grandma safe and needs to keep thinking of Dong Hoon as a target and nothing else to justify getting him fired to herself...
    And Dong Hoon is starting to feel pushed around by her while being drawn to her at the same time and so is looking for a way to navigate himself out of the situation in a way that works with his values.
    However...my favourite scene at the beginning of the episode is the meeting between him and his wife that beautifully shows their communication issues, their past and the feelings that are bubbling away under the surface.
    Then we'll discuss the two significant meetings between Dong Hoon and Ji-An that shape their relationship and foreshadow the later developments in the drama.
    Enjoy the video, pls share, like and join the conversation!
    Drop your thoughts in the comments and let me know your favourite scenes in My Mister!

    I also like the scene where Jian and Donghoon talk together drinking. One thing about the scene might be the generational conflict. I think the generational conflict is one of the themes in this Drama, which I think is the reason why Donghoon frequantly speak out the terms like "adult" and "young." The conflict, I think, is relatively more significant in Korea than in other places, for example, US because the speed of change in Korea has been extremely fast. Dong-hoon's parents' generation literally went through the Korean War, and by the time Jian reached an adulthood, Korea had already reached the stage of a developed country. Donghoon's generation also is affected a lot by their parents, so there is actually a huge generational conflict in Korea because young people cannot understand what adults take for granted. The question about Jian's father is one of the popular questions many people in Donghoon's generation actually ask. Many adults might say that they don't intentionally judge others by asking those questions, while young people ask adults to refrain intentionally from asking those private questions.

    And I personally think the reason Dong-hoon gets angry at Ji-an's words is because of his uncomfortableness as he says. Although 'uncomfortable' is not clearly from his moral sensibility, it still expresses his conscience, as he didn't want to kill the big insect in the first episode, I think. And the character he has is such that most of his thoughts and actions are based on his conscience, which makes him uncomfortable about doing wrong and refraining from doing right. And Ji-an's words stimulate his conscience, I think. Maybe some truth might be in her words, but even if it isn't, Donghoon seems to get angry from whatever lets his conscience uncomfortable.

    "Are you scared you will fall for me?" Dong Hoon is adamant about not letting people know what he's feeling or what pain he's going through, and part of that is never saying the quiet part out loud. He stood up because Ji An exposed a quiet thought he would rather leave unacknowledged, by her and even himself.

    일단 할말잊어버릴까봐 한국어로 씁니다.첫번째 씬 저도 생각한거라 반갑구요. 두번째 씬에서는 그렇게 생각못했었어요. I agree with your first point which was hard hitting to me too. As for the 2nd scene i never approached that way but i am convinced now. I can't help but wonder if English delivers their rather unique, still so realistic, authentic, unclichéd dialogues...really the dialogues are another gem of this drama...o m g. I can praise the beauty of this drama 247 until forever.

      Yes I wish I could also understand it in Korean...i only hear the tone of voice, inflection and yet the subtitles seem not to get criticised a lot which must be a good sign..yes...it's writing on another level from the writer...👍😜

  • @Chiacchi86

    These are my thoughts on Dong Hoon and the other characters, but it's a bit difficult to express it in English...😅
    During the drama, from the words of his mother, his monk friend (that's one of my favorite scenes) and his wife, we understand that he is unable to communicate. He keeps it all inside because he mistakenly thinks it's the best way to "protect" others. Lee Ji An forces him to express his emotions (starting from anger) and even "steals" them from him with the wiretapping device.
    I like how everyone reacts differently to Dong Hoon's character: everyone knows that he can't express his feelings, but the mother worries, the friend accepts him, the wife is somewhat disappointed... In my opinion Ji An, precisely because at the beginning she would like to use this trait of his character to hate him, ends up being more and more attracted to him and wanting him to open up.
    I really appreciate your analysis of his married life and I think this scene between husband and wife is just the moment when we understand her personality, her difficulties, her "justifications". He is ruining the marriage while thinking of safeguarding it with his silence and his "do not react". It's really sad.
    As for the kissing scene, IU is the best actress I've ever seen when it comes to "eyes language". She can portray so many shades with only her eyes and blushing a little.
    I've already said that the dialogue between Ji An and Dong Hoon at dinner is one of the most memorable scenes of this episode for me, and hearing your opinion made me feel understood.😜

      Appreciate your thoughts on this..totally agree with everything you said..I do believe her role is so rich and the writing is so good that an actor's job is really not to mess it up by doing too much...all the way through she just IS in this drama...lives through every moment fully...it's very rare to see in an actor over 16 episodes

      @@ManVsDrama it's insane how hard (or even impossible) is to find a weakness in the plot/script/acting of this drama. Sometimes when I watch a movie or a drama for the first time, I'm amazed by the originality, but when I rewatch it I usually find some lacks in the story. In the case of My Mister, every rewatch helps me to find more complexity and "unity" in the plot. Even if we are talking about things like control devices, or "daring" funerals, the story never loses its sense of reality. You can breathe realism in every scene. Both the creators and the actors made it a masterpiece.

    Your comments about the issues in the relationship between Dong hoon and his wife are spot on. And I totally agree that Lee Ji-ah is very much under-appreciated in this drama, being overshadowed by the other more prominent actors. She did a fantastic job in her role. However, there's something about her that bothers me --- her unnatural-looking plastic-surgery-enhanced face. I find it very distracting at times 😄
    Speaking of underrated actor, another one in my view is Dong hoon's supervisor/boss, played by Jung Jae sung. This man truly deserves more recognition. He not only plays the ass-kissing bad-guy role very well but also brings much-welcome levity to this heavy show.

    • @ManVsDrama
      @ManVsDrama  3 роки тому +3

      Yeah..I don't know...no idea but I don't notice it I guess. Sometimes it's the role that's getting you talked about more...She's also great in a completely different show right now..."the Penthouse" where she's the only character with some values and heart haha... It's true about Jung Jae Sung...his character is kinda crucial...He's probably the only one that's a bit of a one dimensional character we can all hate (apart from the female office worker who always tries to get one over Ji-An and fails everytime lol)...It's true..he brings a ridiculousness to his role that's important in the balance! :-)

    • @peterlee5712
      @peterlee5712 3 роки тому +8

      @@ManVsDrama Yes, I also enjoyed the female office worker's character in the show; she also plays an important part in the story (to show Ji-an's tenacity, to move the plot along when she helped reveal to Jung Jae Sung's character about Dong hoon's close relationship to Ji-an, among others). Boy, the writer of this show really knew what she was doing when she put in all these wonderful and well-placed characters.
      The fact the minor characters were played so well by the actors is one of the reasons why this drama is so amazing. I can give a few more such characters that really stand out and made strong impressions on me. I'll name one more: the short guy who sold his cleaning business to the brothers. To me, his acting is so believable and on point that it seems like he is an actual person I have met in real life.

    Watching you talking about the first scene, I could also focus and pick up some lines I missed before.
    When the wife is angry and says "Don't rip it up like that. You will put it back as it was and it will dry up!"( I'm sorry. I don't know exactly how it is translated in English )
    It shows their little but deep conflict and also sounds like Donghoon's attitude about his own wound. He did not cure it and let it be, and he looks dried up through the show until he finally collapses and cries (the beginning of his self cure) at the last episode.

    The Judas Kiss. I agree with you that Ji An looks like she’s about to jump off a cliff here, it’s a desperate gamble for her. There is a small detail right after the kiss (easy to miss) that
    gives a major clue as to PDH’s feeling for JIi An. If you missed it, go back and watch the scene again. Come back here to see what it is and what I think it signifies.
    After PDH says “don't do that” we cut to PDH’s hand on Ji An’s arm, it’s a quick shot, but instead of pushing her away, he squeezes her arm. He pushes her arms away later but why did the director insert this shot here? PDH might not have even consciously realized he made this gesture but I think on some level Ji An felt it. Later in episode 5, she repeats this same grasping gesture, see if you can spot it. It's an incredibly subtle detail but easier to spot in ep5.
    I’m not sure that Ji An knew that the kiss would fail. And, on a deeper level I think she hoped it would. The look of disappointment on her face as she turns away speaks to feelings of abandonment and rejection that was burned in at an early age. She has very low self esteem and the fact that she was rejected here must have hurt. I think this is why when PDH tells her later she is nice, she plays it over and over again.
    Both characters have had a long drought of any kind of love or physical affection and we know they are longing for it.
    We never once see any kind of intimacy between PDH and his wife and the only physical contact Ji An is receiving is a beat down. For PDH the question as to whether he has romantic feelings for Jin An I think gets answered here. He squeezes her arm and says “don’t you understand”. I think I do.

    • @ManVsDrama
      @ManVsDrama  3 роки тому +4

      Oh...it's interesting reading of the scene. Personally I see zero romantic intention when she tries to kiss him..she just has to get a shot of them looking like they're kissing because she needs to get the money quick and she succeeds in getting the shot..she knows that he's going to push her off but has to get on with it...and looks like she's disgusted with herself in the process..and he's trying to stop her in a controlled way..?

    • @JWPanimation
      @JWPanimation 3 роки тому +3

      @@ManVsDrama I agree, your analysis is perfect. I don't think her intention is romantic, but there is a desire here.
      I don't think Ji An is lying (or ever really lies) when she describes why she kissed him later. "It’s just that I had not kissed someone in a long while. So I simply tried it.
      You looked as bored as I was. How does he look so bored when he makes 5 to six million won a month? You work under a junior from university, although you know he wants to fire you you feign ignorance and trudge on like a diligent lifer. You are someone who looks the most bored and unhappy here. It seemed like your life was as hellish as mine so I wondered if kissing you would make my life less boring and entertaining, even for a second. That’s why I kissed you.
      My life is still boring and dull. It’s the same. How was it for you?"
      In addition to getting paid, she was also hoping to escape her life with the kiss, but it's a cheap escape. The kind of cheap diversionary intimacy given to Kang Yoon by the CEO and easily discarded. PDH shows his character by turning this down while leaving open the possibly for something more precious.

    • @ManVsDrama
      @ManVsDrama  3 роки тому +1

      @@JWPanimationpersonally I think she lies very plausibly. I think she makes it up in that scene in the office..it's like she lies according to the role that she's been playing with him...she tells a plausible story that sounds like brutal honesty..but mostly she says things she picked up about him....because she can sense he will forgive her for it and not fire her..I just think she's pure survival at this stage in the drama...she still needs to get the money from the CEO to protect grandma by getting rid of the loanshark. Interesting debate 👍😎

    • @JWPanimation
      @JWPanimation 3 роки тому +3

      @@ManVsDrama God I’d love to keep this response short, it’s just there is so much to unpack here, please bear with me.
      Absolutely, the best liars know, in order to be plausible, there has to be some truth mixed in. I read another post where you and another viewer were discussing Ji An’s truthfulness. It's a question about her character I’ve been pondering too. How much is Ji An lying? I hope you will explore this in a future video by really going in depth about Ji An, her character and motivations (PDH too).
      I agree, Jin An is smart and agile enough to know exactly what to say to PDH to keep him from firing her, but I can't find anything false in her explanation. She could have played to his ego, saying she had a crush on him (a lie), but did not. The reason she kissed him, had absolutely nothing to do with him. She knows what he's dealing with and understands him, but does not give a shit about him. I think she was also capable of having taken some “entertainment” from the kiss (pleasure) and then betraying him later. This is the exact opposite of romance.
      When she tells the CEO that she takes pleasure in bringing people down like PDH, I don’t think she’s lying either. I love this line she says in one of her meals with PDH. “Would you hate me, with your utmost passion. Like there is no tomorrow. And in return, I will hate you with my utmost passion.” She's not one dimensional though. I agree with you that she immediately feels disgust at herself right after kissing PDH. But, she has no remorse for what she is planning to do to him. She hates the person she is becoming and is conflicted but can't see past herself. Deep, deep, down, we know she cares about the well being of her grandmother and is capable of empathy, but she’s teetering on the edge of sociopathy. Once PDH sees her care for her grandmother and acknowledges it, and she really sees him for who he is - everything flips. She now has empathy for him and we can replace the word "hate" to "love" with utmost passion.

    • @ManVsDrama
      @ManVsDrama  3 роки тому +2

      @@JWPanimation agreed on many points but I strongly believe she's lying to the CEO later...about supposedly wanting to destroy "good guys like dong hoon"...because it was the only way to convince the CEO that she was still working for him when she was basically just protecting dong hoon.. even earlier in the drama we never see her taking pleasure in doing bad things to him...but we see flashes of pity even earlier in my view...for example after the forces that kiss on him to get the shot...she looks back at him with STH like pity or concern.. to me everything at the beginning is driven by need to protect her grandma ...later it's all driven by helping PDH survive and at times a hope for a temporary escape from the hopelessness of her future of being fired again and working another meaningless temp job...but yeah...maybe it's a definition of lying...so much to discuss👍😁

It is, very sadly, a concept and behavior that the west has abandoned in its frantic rush to cultural suicide.

I don't remember correctly but his wife said he made her lonely even when they're together and he doesn't seem like he needs her. Honestly, I totally understand why she cheated on him. You know, everybody wanna be needed by people they love. If my girlfriend didn't need me and I felt it, I think I'd prepare to break up with her slowly even before I realize it. Anyway, the fact that Donghoon hasn't been so nice to his wife gets us to understand her on some level and makes this drama more realistic.
