It is scenes like this that make it hard to explain to other people why they should see My Mister. When you tell them about one of your favorite scenes, and say it is about a group of middle aged people who walk a girl home, who is in her early twenties. They look at you like you're insane. ☺
Well said! It's the first time I've watched a drama which makes me feel like I do when reading a great novel. (Usually they turn a novel into a series and you think "where did all the good stuff go"?)
Haha, that's true! Better watched than explained, honestly. Lee Sun Kyun got SO much grief when this drama was first announced. But the director, writer, and the actors stuck it out and produced a beautiful story that absolutely makes sense once it has all played out. But to describe it in human language just doesn't do it justice.
@@ManVsDrama Good question. Sadly, when the drama was first announced and people thought it was a romantic love story between LSK and IU's characters, LSK received a lot of backlash for being an "old pervert" ....things along those lines. IU had also recently gone through her own controversy with one of her songs (I'm not clear on all those details, something about a Lolita concept). So the show started filming under a cloud of controversy. Thankfully the show did well and viewers became more and more engaged, but it seems that the show did self-censor some of the more romantic elements, and had to "hide" them underground a bit more. Thus all the subtlety....which in the end is so beautiful I think!!
When you watch dramas to escape reality, but a drama that almost reflects reality along with life changing lessons might help you come into terms with your reality. This is why this drama just hits differently.
How can one word be so expressive? Ji-an, ever so subtly, makes "thank you" sound like she had to take a run-up to make the word come out, and then her voice hesitates halfway through, as though unsure she is really saying it. And it's just taken 12 episodes. No wonder we get tearful! Ji-an's silence for the first half of the scene, as the conversation literally revolves around her, makes you imagine how each of these characters seem from her point of view. Earlier in the series she might have broken that silence with something negative like "You lot have it easy", but her "I want to be your age soon, because life will be easier" shows she regards the others positively, and also shows some optimism for her future - despite everything she knows...
Thank you so much for adding that..you're right it came out that way...and it's fascinating to figure out how they got to such specific and nuanced performances..thanks again!
The year she filmed this drama singer IU went on to complete her 10th anniversary concert tour. Sold-out stadium performances in Busan, Kwangju, Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok, Taipei, plus a monster two night blow-out concert at Seoul Olympic arena that went on for five hours - a one woman soloist show. It would be difficult to express what a towering figure our little 'Ji-an' is in the Korean entertainment industry.
@@ManVsDrama it's funny because she is on vacation now, and all her fans are missing her like crazy 😅 Luckily, Lee Ji Eun is a very balanced person (even if she went through some struggles). She also admitted that making this drama helped her to learn how to love herself 😉 In addition to her singing, writing and acting skills, she is a very interesting person!
@@ManVsDrama Sadly, after the early part of the filming of My Mister, it went rather beyond that. IU's health was so bad that she was hospitalised. She asked to buy her way out of the project before the first episode aired, so they could carry on without her - devastated as she had never failed to complete work before. (There is a notable speech IU gave at that time at an awards ceremony, following the suicide of a close friend, asking her colleagues to look after their mental health and not worry about admitting their difficulties.) IU recounts how My Mister's director Kim Won Seok's response to her request was to visit her, and apologise for having been so wrapped up in monitoring her on screen that he hadn't noticed how IU was suffering herself. He offered to re-arrange the filming to work around her health. In her words "I really owe him for life" ... "while filming the drama, it felt as if spring came into my life".
Watching this a second time, finding more to appreciate in this drama. IU is awesome, as is Lee Sun-kyun. But Kwon Nara shines as well in her endearing pathos.
yeah...I love her characterisation in this...Kwon nara I mean..obviously the other two...are gold in this but...yeah among so many others...Yura is a great character. :-)
Thanks for this analysis! This scene has a lot of meanings for me. On the one hand, I see it from Ji An's point of view, and I guess she got a little frustrated when they first decided to go with her all together, because she missed an opportunity to be alone with Dong Hoon. But then she started feeling included, empathizing with their chatter (even though she feels their life is more poetic and simple than it is). And it's an occasion for her to really understand his life, that she only knows from her hearphones. When she finally says thank you (just like when she says fighting) her tone makes you imagine the indecision she had before speaking, but also the relief she got after saying it. On the other hand, Dong Hoon sees her for the first time in his "real world", and I think he perceives her a little differently. I think she is more real to him now. I think seeing how others perceive her helps him to realize how he perceives her himself. It's a moment in the drama where it seems to me that Ji An and Dong Hoon are more "physically present" to each other than they ever have been, even though they have fewer interactions.
Yes, thanks for your thoughts here...It's true...it's always interesting when you bring people together and how they interact with each other..and for Dong Hoon it must have been interesting seeing her with them...The only thing I think we tend to forget is that at this stage I believe she's mortified about letting any of his friends get to know her more because that would be more people who would get to know about the stuff she was up to if it all came out...and I believe at some point she knows it will....so that makes it doubly awkward for her and doubly explains her reluctance to get involved at first. But there are so many aspects to this...:-)
@@ManVsDrama I agree that she wants to try to keep a low profile, especially with those who know Dong Hoon. I think it shows in the office, with her trying to be helpful, but afraid to be involved in the office relationships (even if she "dies for be involved"). However, when I look at this particular scene, I mostly notice that she is so surprised by the unfolding of events that I don't think she even has time to realize it. Moreover, if I put myself in her shoes, I think that the idea of being "interesting" or noteworthy to someone (or even being able to "get attached" to someone else other than Dong Hoon) does not even cross her mind. I think it's something she realizes later, when she has found herself involved in spite of herself. She begins to feel the full weight of the decision she has made, so her "thank you" is even more heartbreaking. Obviously this is only my personal feeling, and it could be altered by my personality ;)
That's the ridiculous thing about My Mister. I'll sit down to watch just one scene, and suddenly 75 minutes have passed and me (a guy who never cries) has tears welling up in my eyes.
Ever since you put out the poll, I've been looking forward to this video. Glad to see the the outcome but never doubted this moment would end up as the the choice based on comments I read. Really enjoyed your thoughts, and they promoted my interest to further the conversation. Your point about having Jeonghee as the connector is spot-on. It would be tricky to advance the moment without her serving as the catalyst to bring Jian into the group. Also really liked your observation about how each member of the group provides his/her own contribution to the chemistry in this moving scene. The management of the dynamics and development of Jian's relationship with the neighborhood was handled so expertly, as you described "poetically". In addition to the attention of details, the amazing part is how restrained the direction was. No moment felt forced, or imposed. Where the highlights came in (e.j. Jian's comment on easier life when older and her thanking at the end), they were there to punctuate the theatrical themes with impact, yet all seemed natural. One reason I feel why the walking home moment reverberated so much is because we all understand the feeling portrayed here. With the sense of community among our friends, in the air of ease and comfort, we can talk and tease without keeping up our mental guards. We witness here how Jian was introduced and embraced in DH's crowd without demand or expectation, only a natural sense of looking out for one another (both with the part of neighborhood watch as well as the interactions among them). One reason why I love "My Mister" so much is the beauty of watching Jian's growth from a person hardened by miseries in life who only focused on surviving in an uncaring cocoon filled of threats, deal-making and self-interest, to gradually finding the possibilities of a world one can draw comfort, support and reinforcement. This drama is full of such reaffirming moments. The first key one in my mind is when she broke down and wailed while DH voiced how he would do the same if someone threatens his family. Her personal anguish and source of her guilt, for the first time, was acknowledged and understood by someone else. The other one is what you mentioned when Jian offered "Hwaiting" to DH. This signaled her willingness to connect with another person. At the end of this walk when she uttered "kamsahamnida" gave us another breakthrough that illustrated her willingness to believe in the possibility of a supportive community. This is the foundation for her to build back up her relationship with the society. This belief in the possibility finally shattered her long-held expectation that only she alone must fight all the elements in the society by herself to survive. BTW, love your comment about how the early silence by Jian only served to accentuate the effect of her words when spoken. Jian's life has given her lessons the other adults have forgotten or brushed aside. I think I will stop here. It's too easy to get carried away when talking about "My Mister." Many thanks for the video.
Absolutely agree . Ji-an's journey is incredibly moving...and thats why we have these seemingly extreme reactions to these moments..her character is one of the multi layered characters of any drama ever...thank you so much for your comments! I learn so much from you and others in the comments ! 👍😁
OMF YES THIS SCENE. I just commented on another of your video about how no one talks about this scene and im so glad i found yours!! I swear the characters in this drama can say one word and i will bawl my eyes out.
Hi Stephan, thanks for your commentary on this scene. I was just so moved by it, and felt in the hands of a master director with perfect ensemble cast, with nuanced script and staging, wonderful camerawork, and probably more than a little ad-libbing that kept it “real.” It was magical, leaving me thinking, “what just happened? Why do I feel so moved, how did they do this?” I am a musical person, and the feeling was like hearing a perfectly rendered meditative slow classical movement. Why is it moving? For one, it is an interlude from the fierce combat going on at many levels with the loan sharks, corporate cuthroats and even Yura's travails with movie directors. Also, this is when her friendship with Dong Hoon gives her "membership" in a supportive community, and one of the few scenes where Jian is acknowledged and respected, and her guard is going down around this group, even while she is planning to disappear. The Hugye bar friends give her a bow - the first one she receives in the series? When the group first meets with Dong Hoon and Jian they lead and she trails them at the rear. By the time the scene is finished, every person in the group besides Dong Hoon gets a chance to show her some respect. The script work from the drunken friend making fun of Dong Hoon, turning to why not give Jian taxi money, turning to the question of “is Dong-Hoon safe,” and the story of Jeong Hui & Dong Hoon in their 20s is so perfectly tuned, so naturally shot and rendered, it seems like just random chatter, but it all leads up to Jian’s confession, that she wants to be older, life is too hard for her right now. Unlike other brutally frank comments she makes earlier in the series, this is made without bitterness or to manipulate. And the group reassesses this young woman newly in their midst, and re-groups to surround her and watch in that perfectly paused “theatrical moment,” without a word being spoken, without hostility and with sympathy. Has Jian ever felt this from a group before in her life? When two of the group leave, including the rough-faced Gwon-Sik, (who I really appreciated throughout) he bows again to Jian in departing (!) and then puts his arm around his friend’s shoulder as they walk away. Then when the remaining group reaches Jian’s apartment, Sang Hoon calls to the neighbor to help keep Jian safe. And then Jian’s thanks, while still tightly clutching that bag, then bowing, just caps the scene, and brings tears to my eyes. At times in the scene it seems that Jeong-Hui’s swishy, assertive walk around the other characters is like a ballerina around a chorus, she just moves the scene forward and it feels natural. What do you think? :~)
“My mister” means a lot to me. Sometimes we didn’t explain/react/show how we feel in our real life. I can feel their love. Love is simply beautiful. No need to explain or prove it. 😌 Thanks for sharing your favorite scenes. My favorite episode is the last one, episode 16.
I have time today so am commenting on all your videos :) This is one of my favorite scenes from the show, especially because in context, it's the first time Ji An and Dong Hoon have really connected with each other in a while. At the end of Episode 10 he hit her, then during Episode 11 they didn't talk at all until he chased her down and demanded she buy him new slippers. Since then, he's been dealing with Yoon Hee's confession of the affair as well as trying to get that darn safety report done! He glimpsed her through the van window on the street, and you could see his visceral longing for her then. But otherwise they haven't talked to each other since the Buy Me Slippers! conversation. So Ji An working late gave them the opportunity to start connecting again. Completely agree with you that the pacing of this scene, and the way the show brings in all the Hugye neighbors, is just beautiful. Also - "not supernatural, super natural elements" - LOL.
Thanks for your breakdown, this an important scence.I like the message of Lee Jian saying thank you, giving hope that she is connecting with others. The entire episode is powerful for most the characters. Thanks again your breakdown and insight is so enjoyable.
The perfect scene to have picked, and brilliant observations. If we think of it like gymnastics, i think the moment that sticks the landing is her "Thank you," which is not only perfectly delivered, but I am pretty sure also the first time she says it to anyone, which adds weight to Dong-hoon's looking back at her. So moving. I have to agree though, how wonderful was that moment when they all stop after she says she can't wait to be older so that life would be easier.
Once again a poetic analysis of a beautiful scene Stephan. You are right on when you describe Jung Hee as the woman that brings everyone together. It's Jung Hee's place that is the refuge for PDH's crew. One reason I think that they are so relaxed around each other and willing to embrace Ji An is that like her, all the characters have had there hardships and failures. PDH was just about to jump off a bridge. His brothers having failed in their careers are now cleaners. Jung Hee keeps telling herself she is a clean woman? Yet they are not bitter and watch each others backs. It truly is the embodiment of a Sangha (Buddhist community). Ji An bows to them as they leave, a sing of respect we have not seen from them before. She has found her tribe and we exhale along with her.
Glad I found your video! I was just finished watching this scene, feeling so moved and desperately needed to find others that share the same feeling, and here where everybody is! All of us, here, just couldn't move on from one of the most heartwarming scene of the drama. Thank you for the video!
Great scene choice! Ji An is so unaccustomed to warmth and safety that her initial reaction to the Hugye crowd is skittishness. They immediately honor her because she’s with Dong Hoon (tellingly, the men bow deeper than she does, and they bow first), but she actually moves backward when they greet her (truly brilliant direction). I love how, by the end of the scene, she finally accepts their kindness and protection with her “thank you.” So crazy that this line feels like an emotional climax--seriously, when she says that, the expression on Dong Hoon’s face shows more tenderness than the love scenes of some other dramas.
Totally..perfectly said..and it just struck me again that it's easy to forget that at the same time what holds her back from enjoying any of this is her guilt over her dual identity and the stuff she's been doing...it's weighing heavily on her mind...so all these people knowing her potentially could mean more people being disappointed in her when they find out what she did..🙄
Thank you for yet another thoughtful, insightful and knowledgeable scene review. There are many great comments and insights left by others but I wanted to add my thoughts about the ending of the scene. Jian's thank you and bow was specifically directed at Sang Hoon. His recognizing her possible need for protection and so quickly setting it up was a very caring gesture which meant a huge amount to Jian. You can imagine during all the years she was beaten by the loan shark and his son that neighbors likely chose to not get involved. In addition Dong Hoon's reaction shows how he recognizes this as an extremely unusual thing for Jian to do and how much what Sang Hoon did obviously meant to her. And possibly that he should have thought of doing something like that himself. Sang Hoon, although he comes off as a goofball with many faults is underneath that a very caring person. I think I first recognized that in this scene.
Well that's interesting..I missed that and will have another look at it...that would make a lot of sense too even symbolically...thanks so much for adding this! 👍😉
Deep, great review. it's kind of a new type of reviewing video. it's almost like me watching My Mister sharing ideas with a good friend of mine. cool video.
Thank you for the excellent review to my favorite scene throughout the whole series. Really enjoyed it. You are right, from the camerawork, it does feel like you are walking together with them as one of residents in Fuge. And I too love the funny ajusshi character guy. He really reminds us of one of everyone’s funny guys in our real daily lives. Looking forward to your next review!
If there's one person who could break down a scene in My Mister and help me fully understand and appreciate all of its nuances --- from different angles, including from the film-making perspective, that would be you Stephan. Many thanks for the review! Four more episodes to go and there are many incredible and moving scenes coming up. Can't wait to hear your takes on them!
That moment opened Ji An's eyes I guess, that everyone has a good side, that there are still many good people around her besides Dong Hoon. Kudos to Hugye squad! Episode 13 also has some tough choices, lots of emotional scenes. One of them is when DH's two brothers finally find out that YH is cheating on DH. The difference between the two reactions is clear, but they are equally heartbreaking. Then the part when JH finally strong enough to confront "you know who". And also the scene of DH's interview session, oh, can you guys hold your tears at that scene when DH defending Ji An? 😭
The scene when Sang Hoon called out his friend and ask him to watch out for her house's surrounding and the friend said he would. Really if it's in normal circumstance, it's like a normal words from neighbors to neighbors or words from the mother to the neighbor of the "start-to-live-seperately-life" daughter. The friend might answer it because of politeness. But this scene made me see different. It made me thought that "Words even though for politeness are words with care too". P.S: My oh my, seeing you had difficult time to choose the scenes in ep.12. What're you going to do when we reach ep.15
It is scenes like this that make it hard to explain to other people why they should see My Mister. When you tell them about one of your favorite scenes, and say it is about a group of middle aged people who walk a girl home, who is in her early twenties. They look at you like you're insane. ☺

I think you described it perfectly..it feels like a piece of music...beautifully constructed and executed.👍😎
“My mister” means a lot to me. Sometimes we didn’t explain/react/show how we feel in our real life. I can feel their love. Love is simply beautiful. No need to explain or prove it. 😌
Thanks for sharing your favorite scenes. My favorite episode is the last one, episode 16.
Yeah...ep 16 is fantastic...let's see if I can pick a favourite scene 🤔🤔
Thanks Karen! I enjoyed it a lot myself! And I find new meaning in it all the time! 👍😉
Gymnastics is a great analogy😄yes this scene like the scene with the shopping cart is brilliantly written, paced and acted..thanks for commenting 👍😎
Not a single scene can be omitted from this beautiful drama. Every moment is deep and meaningful.
Great way of describing the scene and its effect on us! Thanks John!
@@ManVsDrama We are getting to the end and there are so many great scenes coming up. Thanks again for bringing us all together Stephan!
Your insightful reviews are as amusing as the drama itself. Thank you so much.
Thanks as always...onwards to episode 13!
It's really interesting to see this kdrama through your eyes. Thanks you for videos☺
And I enjoy the many thoughtful comments! Thank you! 👍🙂
Glad I found your video! I was just finished watching this scene, feeling so moved and desperately needed to find others that share the same feeling, and here where everybody is! All of us, here, just couldn't move on from one of the most heartwarming scene of the drama. Thank you for the video!
In that case I am glad you found this video too...and I hope you enjoy the rest of this video series and the drama itself of course!👍😎
Deep, great review. it's kind of a new type of reviewing video. it's almost like me watching My Mister sharing ideas with a good friend of mine. cool video.
if that's how it comes across I am very glad! hope you enjoy the rest of the series!
Right? He's also really crucial to elements of the story! 👍😁
This show is very beautiful I loved every minute of it
If there's one person who could break down a scene in My Mister and help me fully understand and appreciate all of its nuances --- from different angles, including from the film-making perspective, that would be you Stephan. Many thanks for the review! Four more episodes to go and there are many incredible and moving scenes coming up. Can't wait to hear your takes on them!
Thanks I know..it's going to be hard!!👍😁
That moment opened Ji An's eyes I guess, that everyone has a good side, that there are still many good people around her besides Dong Hoon. Kudos to Hugye squad!
Episode 13 also has some tough choices, lots of emotional scenes. One of them is when DH's two brothers finally find out that YH is cheating on DH. The difference between the two reactions is clear, but they are equally heartbreaking.
Then the part when JH finally strong enough to confront "you know who".
And also the scene of DH's interview session, oh, can you guys hold your tears at that scene when DH defending Ji An? 😭
Absolutely....Mmmhh...we might have to see another vote! 👍😉
Great work!!!
Thank you so much 😀
The scene when Sang Hoon called out his friend and ask him to watch out for her house's surrounding and the friend said he would.
Probably my favourite episode...mmmhh...😂😂😂
Why don’t you do more scenes? Your explanation is great and I just think your videos are too short!😢
Waiting for episod 13....
