Ji-an does not say anthing for the first 25 minutes of the episode 01... ji-an doesn't smile until episode 07... that just tell you everything about her...
Dong-hun described her as “a broken child grows up too fast”. And I thought it was just perfect way of describing her brokenness in her eyes and behaviors.
I am Korean and it was very difficult to wait week after week when this drama aired. The next day after watching this drama, there were times when I was driving and I was in tears at the moment when I got a traffic light. It is so beautiful and realistic that it hurt my heart. thanks for the reaction
Thanks for the reaction. It's refreshing to get a filmmaker's perspective of My Mister. This is such a powerful drama filled with delicate human drama based on relationships and character-molding. You shed new light on the approach of story-telling here.
it's funny...I logically noticed that too..but you just writing it out so clearly made the connection even more obvious emotionally. thanks. Also...I actually feel guilty about not including that scene in this video...because when he tells that story to his brothers after breaking into tears in the bar...it honestly is heartbreaking!
This was quite subtle and I never caught onto that where you explained that Ji An has her flashback of killing the loan shark that it is parallel to the conversation she's hearing with Dong Hoon. I always wondered why she has this flashback at that moment and this makes perfect sense that by her eavesdropping the confrontation between Dong Hong and the property manager/person that perhaps she thinks that finally there is someone that can sympathize with her and that she is not wrong for doing what she did. Personally, the most powerful scene that portrayed this exact thing you describe in your explanation for me was in episode 9 where Dong Hoon confronts Kwang Il after learning about Ji An's past from her caretaker. Dong hong has these flashbacks of recent interactions with Ji An, but the one that sticks out the most is when she asks him "have you ever beaten a woman?" and you see a tear roll down his face because he then has pieced it together that the bruises and injuiries she's sustained recently is because of Kwang Il. Meanwhile she's listening to this whole thing and then they start fighting and she's starting to rush over to them and then freezes in her tracks right after Kwang Il says she killed his dad. The caretaker did not mention she explicitly killed him, but told him they were in debt and her grandmother would get beaten. You can see Ji An's spirits get crushed here as she falls back on her footsteps and has concluded that everything is now over and has to go on the run as a fugitive again now that someone knows she killed someone. She turns back looking very defeated until she hears him say that he would have killed him too and they continue to fight while she breaksdown. She cries not because he knows her darkest secret now, but because a huge weight has been lifted off her shoulders, tears of relief, bottled up for years, that there is someone out there that finally understands why she did what she did
You break it down so well I almost get tearful 👍🙂 yes it feels like this scene is foreshadowing the very powerful scene in ep 9...thanks I'll make a video about that one as well
When Ji An was hearing Dong Hoon say that he also experienced kneeling, getting slapped and cursed at and then go home as if nothing happened, I recall this scene in ep 4 where Ji An just got another beating from Kwang Il and afterward, it was shown Ji An walking home sulky with bruises on her face yet was holding a bag of fruit that she would regularly buy for her grandma. She went through the same and even worse -- gotten beaten up yet had to drop by the grocery to buy food and go home as if nothing happened. Very heartbreaking scene yet it established their connection that will define their relationship through the show.
Thank you for your observation. Another example of brilliance in this program that makes me wonder - how did the writer and director create something so perfect? It is sublime and literally awesome.
This was a beautifully crafted sequence. What Director Kim Won Suk does so well is move around in time as you described, and if you watch the series twice you will start to pick up details that foreshadow scenes from the future or echo scenes from the past. I'm in the industry as well and have been studying My Mister as a master class in cinema. If you watch the first read through with the actors, Director Kim Won Suk welcomes the cast by saying they will be working on a masterpiece, and he is absolutely correct. IU (아이유) was cast perfectly in the role of Ji An. I understand her life actually mirrors Ji An's in that her parents were in so much debt she had to live with her grandmother, who did not have the resources to raise her. As a result she often ended up going hungry. IMHO, this experience leads her to give some of the best performances I've seen from an actress in the scenes with her grandmother (one scene in particular, and you will know if you've seen it). I can read almost everything from her face and body language, but like the Mona Lisa her expressions are subtle enough that the audience can add their own experience or interpretation to what she's conveying with her acting. As a dancer she's so good with gestures and body language that almost impossibly, she can express both toughness and vulnerability at the same time. Given Lee Sun Kyun's strong portrayal of Park Dong Hun, Park Hae Young's intricately beautiful script (which desperately needs some translation love on Netflix), Choi Yun Man's expressive camera framing and light, set to a wonderful score, all conducted masterfully by Director Kim Won Suk, we have lightning in a bottle. Thanks Stephan for putting together this wonderful series, to give these artists the recognition they deserve internationally, and for a place for those that love My Mister to discuss it.
Hi john, thank you for all your comments. I have a writing background and find the Netflix subtitles to be suspiciously simpleminded at times, seemingly sloppy, though I have no knowledge Of the Korean language - the translation just seems to smell sometimes in my opinion. 😲🤪. We’lre the translations better in the rakkuten version or any other? I would pay to get a better translated version, nerd that I am. 😁Thank you again.
I absolutely love that you chose this scene out of everything to start this recap series. This moment is exactly where this drama shows its direction and gets irresistibly attractive
yeah...I thought I start here because of that exactly...but I'll go back through the first 3 episodes first now because of so many My Mister lovers out there!! 👍😉
This scene is what got me hooked as well!, I was planning to drop the series on ep 4 but this scene really got to me and now this is my fav drama of all time!
That's exactly it.there are a lot of guys in suits in the first few episodes and it could feel a bit like a crime office drama...but after this scene at the very latest everyone should understand what this drama is going to be about 👍😜
I thought it would be hard for foreigners to understand this scene because it contains Korean emotions and gag elements, but I'm surprised that it was the most impressive scene for you. This drama is the best drama for me, too. Thank you for your review. Another Miss Oh (Netflix), a drama written by the same writer, is also recommended.
@@ManVsDrama It is literally amazing that you also saw another miss oh. I love your review in this ep. because it is my favorite too! On my sight, you only leaved out the two more remarkable scenes where he collaps on the street after acting the hero thing (where you stopped ;)) and she dropped a tear on the her cheek!! I am excited about your next review and looking forward it. 😉👍🏻
@@MaxYoon you're totally right...afterwards I remembered again how great it was how exhausted he was afterwards because he went totally beyond his usual behaviours and it's so realistic and her last reaction...that was my fault for worrying about the video getting too long...but you're right..that's part of the scene..👍🙂
Nice reaction and discussion about the scene in Ep. 4; thank you. My two favorite scenes in Ep. 5: (1) the sequence where Ji-an ran off with the shopping cart so that she could take her grandma to see the moon and Dong-hoon helped them get down the alleyway. I think this might be the turning point in how Ji-an viewed her relationship with Dong-hoon --- after seeing how kind Dong-hoon was to her. This whole scene is brilliant. Not just in terms of the storytelling but also the direction, editing and cinematography --- and the music (the song "Dear Moon" was played there). The last part of the sequence when Dong-hoon returned the cart to the supermarket is a wonderful final touch to top it off. Amazing! (2) Dong-hoon slipped and fell near the train tracks and Ji-an ran to him to make sure he was okay. It is so touching to see how she had grown to care so much about him. My bet is that your two favorite scenes are these two as well :-)
Mmmhhh....these are great scenes.... I can't confirm or deny at this stage whether they're my favourites from ep 5 😇...but I'll make a video about my 2 faves from ep 5 next👍😜 you gave a great write up of these already though 👍🙂 let's see if you know me well haha
Thank you for this, I want to watch it again, again again. The most moving scene for me is the penultimate scene in the final episode.. " pighting " moves me to tears thinking of it. The sadness behind ji ans eyes as she smiles.
Yeah that scene is so moving ...the last two episodes have si many amazing scenes in them ...I'll make s video about them too..just getting there episode by episode👍😜
Lee Sun-kyun said acting opposite IU unnerved him because she was so still and stoic that he would become flustered during their scenes. But that's exactly what was needed in those early episodes. How do you portray a 6 foot tall supervisor being intimidated by a 5 foot 4 21 year old temp worker?
I love how he uses his structural engineering knowledge to threaten this guy and stand up for his brother. It’s rare an engineer is portrayed as a bad*ss! (We usually are portrayed as nerdy)
Yesss that is one of my favorites scenes, it has such a strong vibe! I know a little bit of architecture due to a friend, it was so exciting watching that scene! And the acting skills were on point as well 👌
Im sorry i can find a favorite scene y love it from star to finish, but the last scene when he ask her to strech hands, I meant a lot for me because he was finally in peace with himself and felt free to express whatever is that he was feeling.

Absolutely, the work of a lifetime. I wish I spoke Korean to understand the true meaning of the words spoken by the characters. So much gets lost in translation.
Wow. Yes, very good scene! I like that you pointed out how the scene starts with Ji an listening in. It was very effective in seeing it from her perspective. Nothing beats My Mister for me so far. Enjoying the rewatch scenes.
Hey glad to see another person who appreciates My Mister. This is one of the top 5 dramas I've seen as well. Recently I found another great drama and I think is on par with My Mister in terms of delivery and aesthetics in production. Try Navillera for your next Kdrama. I don't think you'll regret.
reality super hero is good! I missed the moment afterwards when he's completely exhausted bending over in the street after putting himself so far out of his comfort zone for his brother!
While this scene is great, from what I picked up in the Korean forums, the last scene was felt more deeply by the viewers. The short exchange with his brother, "I know someone who knows me, and I seem to know a little bit about her as well" "are you happy?" "I'm very sad..." And the way Jian turned her face anxiously, was symbolic in how she started finding moral dilemma in what she's doing. It flipped our expectations upside down in how we thought this conversation would go, but gave it a lot more depth, and with Jian's reaction it wrapped up the turning point in the story. The script was so incredible!
Yes I agree..that's a very significant moment and as always her reaction is perfectly shot and setting up the next episode in just the right way. We can feel she's going to struggle to keep not caring about him. 😏
As a big Korean fan of this drama, I've wanted to see how foreignors feel about it. And I found your channel and I love it cuz I like how you explain the scene and I can see many people's comments here. You know, this drama has more dramatic and touching scenes towards the end and I'm looking forward to your review and people's comments about those scenes. Thank you.
Yeah I am looking forward to hearing more from Koreans about elements of dramas that may puzzle me still culturally...my mister seems to translate universally! Speak on the next one 👍🙂
Hi. I'm a new subscriber... I'm here bcoz i saw My Mister being reviewed and loved your perspective on it. Looking forward to more such scenes being reviewed in future 👍
Even in the first scene of the first episode when someone is talking on the phone about the resilience of the building structure then the camera is on to lee ji an as if there is a hidden meaning.
This drama was beyond my imagination, which made me think the basic attitude about how to live my life. Also, because I thought the feelings and emotions in My Mister were very Korean, it is amazing when I have noticed that many foreign viewers sympathize with the characters. Now I can't say My Mister is the only best drama in my life, because I watched 1 year later "When the camellia blooms 동백꽃 필 무렵". I bet you will love it as much as My Mister.
Agreed with you. Hope you also review another episode, when ji an surprisingly give very nice and touchful comment in interview to choose the director. Or in last episode when Gwang Il, the one who she hate the most, finally the one who save them all... my mister is drama full with nice surprise and deep meaning. Thank you for made this nice review.
Thanks for great review and analysis. There is one thing I'd like to add comments. Where donghoon's quarreling with the bad property company guy. He's asking donghoon if he's an architecrure and he says he's structural engineer. Then he tells him to take care of your company structure.
Here is something you might have missed. Originally, in korean script, when donghoon answered him he's an structural engineer to his asking, the bad guy misunderstood it as rescue engineer. Because the korean word for structure is the same for rescue. So the bad guy replies then you'd better go to beach for the resque. This moment is veey funny to Korean where we're giggling....
This is so good.. I actually went back to watch this again during covid lockdown. You are absolutely right that you pick up something new from the scenes you missed the first time. I need to watch this again.. thanks
Eavesdropping is the key to the non-verbal understanding between Ji-an and Dong-Hoon. She doesn't just listen to his words, she also listens and interprets his breathing. It's a form of voyeurism I call écouteurism.
Ecouterism👍😎that's brilliant! I honestly think it's worth checking out the brilliant German movie "the lives of others" ...it's got ecouterism with extra German efficiency👍😜
@@ManVsDrama indeed. Enjoyed the twists and jolts delivered by lives of others, with a central part being how the eavesdropper gradually sympathizes with the “prey,” until the final turn. Thank you again so much for your work.
My mister makde even 54 yr old guy cry... Western or eastern, caucasian or Asian? It doesn't matter.. It's all about growing up with style and warm heart... what do you think?

U got a new subscriber 🥰. I'm really enjoying the way that u r interpreting the video. I'm really enjoying this revisits. In ep4 Mine was the same scene, when donghoon stands up for someone in a way.
Ahhh this drama, there can be no other drama like this, there can be no other character like Jian and there can never be any other actor like IU. Jian always has a special place in my heart forever 💜.
I'm currently watching My Mister on Netflix.I also like this scene. Though I haven't finish watching the entire K-Drama episodes. How was Lee Jian able to track all conversations of Dong Hoon. I know it's in the train while they were traveling, but how's that technique done. Her hands are fast. Even the part in the elevator where Lee Jian got the phone of the CEO. It's so fast, what happened?
The thing I always found amazing and ironic…. Was that his wife left partly because she saw him as a pushover …. But unbeknownst to her he’s probably the most Alfa male person she knows.
I think she left the marriage mainly because he has checked out of the relationship with her, checked out of any expression of his individual emotions, and constantly chose other members of his family over her…
@@bergencountyguy totally agree..the drama clearly shows his part in the deterioration of the marriage..and you put it very well... Nobody should stay together in this zombie relationship..👍😎
sorry my english. This drama strangely reminds me of the movie 'America History x'. The change in the main character's emotions and the arrangement of important events about how the main character has that personality later.
Thank you for your editing and comments. Loved My Mister, actually why I am hooked on K Drama. So glad that I didn't know IU was such a star until after I watched. So glad I found you.

I'm planning to try to pick a few favourites from every episode...good luck to me👍😜 thank you
Even in the first scene of the first episode when someone is talking on the phone about the resilience of the building structure then the camera is on to lee ji an as if there is a hidden meaning.
yeah there are themes in this drama that reverberate through everything! Thank for mentioning it!
Your review is amazing. I really like the way you've done. Looking forward to see others. Thanks.
Thank you so much! hope you check out the series!
Will get there soon I hope..love that scene
I need to watch this again.. thanks
I honestly enjoy it more every time..👍😉
Eavesdropping is the key to the non-verbal understanding between Ji-an and Dong-Hoon.
@@ManVsDrama Yes, indeed it does.
@@ManVsDrama indeed. Enjoyed the twists and jolts delivered by lives of others, with a central part being how the eavesdropper gradually sympathizes with the “prey,” until the final turn. Thank you again so much for your work.
Great breakdown of the episode. Really enjoyed this.
My best K-Drama
My mister makde even 54 yr old guy cry... Western or eastern, caucasian or Asian? It doesn't matter.. It's all about growing up with style and warm heart...
what do you think?
I'm not a fan of korean drama but this drama is master piece...
absolutely agree!
My second favorite drama after itaewon class based on storyline, been my number one before itaewon class for a long time.. I watched it 5 times already and still cry in some scenes..
U got a new subscriber 🥰. I'm really enjoying the way that u r interpreting the video. I'm really enjoying this revisits. In ep4 Mine was the same scene, when donghoon stands up for someone in a way.
Thank you for subscribing..I hope you enjoy the while series! Keep sharing your thoughts I love the conversations👍😉
@@ManVsDrama sure 🥰
it is also my favourite drama of all time too and Im also not korean....appreciate your efforts! thx
I havent seen the movie yet it looks so good. Pitty he passed away. Thank you for the review. Can i watch the movie on utube
I like this video!
Ahhh this drama, there can be no other drama like this, there can be no other character like Jian and there can never be any other actor like IU. Jian always has a special place in my heart forever 💜.
Best of best Drama~~~~~~~~~~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
love your insight thank you
nice reaction!
Amoooooo My mister perfeito...
어른들의 동화 같은 드라마 입니다. 항상 행복하세요
It's so fast, what happened?
great story telling of our lives.
Best
thank you ♡

The thing I always found amazing and ironic…. Was that his wife left partly because she saw him as a pushover …. But unbeknownst to her he’s probably the most Alfa male person she knows.
true...certainly towards the end of the drama! :-)
Hanttakkaree "한따까리" = attack someone
sorry my english.
This drama strangely reminds me of the movie 'America History x'.
The change in the main character's emotions and the arrangement of important events about how the main character has that personality later.
that's really interesting. I'll need to rewatch that I think!
Iu 💜💜💜💜
Please watch Listen to Love. He has same main lead.

Thank you for your editing and comments. Loved My Mister, actually why I am hooked on K Drama. So glad that I didn't know IU was such a star until after I watched. So glad I found you.

is that...the guy who killed Vincenzo’s mother???
Who? Which guy? 🙂
@@ManVsDrama the guy that made him beg for forgiveness and then apologized to the mom (in My Mister).
i’m not sure you’ve been watching Vincenzo on Netflix. i apologize for the spoiler if you haven’t seen Vincenzo yet.
@@AltCTRLF8 no worries about spoilers...I am never that bothered. I haven't got to that bit yet but I am watching it a bit right now...I'll keep an eye out. that actor is great in this so...I hope he gets a lot of work...:-)
