In contrast to sadness, anger is an emotion that prompts the characters to actions. Angry characters tend to be very active within the narrative and thus possess a great deal of agency over the story. It's a strong base motivation for behavior that feels both natural and cathartic.
You hit it on the head, but I would argue there are two other emotions that are just as motivating/character driven and action focused: Fear and Shame. Some people(which idk if you are “some people” or not) actually mistake shame as a Part of fear, but rather shame deals with the meeting, exceeding, or missing the mark of one’s Image. Whether that is a self created persona or an image grafted into them by the populous doesn’t matter. Think Griffith when Guts left the band of the hawk, something about him leaving made Griffith need validation over his image of “Perfection”. Someone important to him in one way or another left him, and he needed to validate himself in a moment great shame, as people don’t leave something that is “perfect”. While Fear comes from the believe that everything is dangerous, and must be dealt with in specific ways. This could be from the obsessive investigation, this could be from forcing a secure space, or if could be from escaping into the enjoyment. All of which are “action”, but yeah Anger is definitely a real motivating emotion. Edit: I hadn’t even watched the vid yet when I saw this… xD
I absolutely love Asura, the fact that his anger is all justified for what happened, the betrayal and murder of his wife, his daughter crying, all that shit is something a father would absolutely go crazy for.
It hit different when he's giving God the 2 piece with a biscuit and he screams "this is for making my daughter cry!" That hit different. Would love to see Asura come back, but it's more likely he'd be a guest in a Capcom fighting game than him ever getting a solo title again.
It's cathartic. As males in society we are often told to hide our anger and not express it. To see someone else express their (usually justified) anger in an unrestrained manner is incredibly satisfying
It goes even deeper than that. We’re told to hide our anger unless it’s needed to protect our family’s and what we love so when we see a character having the same reaction we’re told to have during that scenario it’s like we’re finally allowed to get angry ourselves and it’s like we can live that scenario with them
@@eoghanmaloney9561 It's weird, cos the likelihood of something like Berserk or something ever occurring in an ordinary person's life(let alone anyone's) is astronomical, which (talking out my ass here, dont quote me) is probably why there are so many drama queens in this world, cos we need an excuse to vent our anger because the reasons for our anger aren't "good enough" either when other people judge you or even when you're judging yourself.

"Wrath is something that anybody can relate to. It's an emotion that's very powerful. It's sometimes seen as negative, but it can be a driving force that helps you overcome any obstacle." -Hiroshi Matsuyama on a quote about Asura's Wrath
Gut's anger is at himself for feeling like a meathead, and at Griffith for screwing over his war family. Even with all that, he just wants peace and be with Casca.
Yo, you are legit getting near the roots of a really good psychological theory about three really motivating emotions. The whole Shame, Fear, and Anger thing… In this theory, Shame is about how one deals with their Image, Fear is how one moves in a “dangerous” world. Anger is how you assert your “ego”, ego not the sense of confidence or arrogance, but the “self”. Each one of these has three archetypical ways you deal with it, and they can connect to each other via “wings” or “fixes”. For example, you could deal with anger through needing to reactively express it, so it doesn’t build up and force you to explode, thus being more likely to just in general be a more “dominant” or assertive person. But, you could also identify very much with what parts of you are “vulnerable”, “weak”, or “imperfect”. This combination essentially creating a person who is assertively negative about everything, but not out of depression but from a sense or need to be genuine and open about one’s flaws.and this is just a combination of Anger and Shame, not to mention adding fear into the mix. Where in addition to that they might still feel the need to have fun and enjoy themselves in a world that is dangerous, while they are weak and vulnerable. Avoiding the negativity of how dangerous those vulnerabilities are, despite recognizing them and being open with them. Thus creating a very upfront, blunt, and negatively open person, that still tries to get the enjoyment in life, disregarding the dangers their actions pose to themselves and/or those around them, purposely trying to ignore those dangers.
Angry characters don't force you to analyse their character or study their actions, you can just appreciate what, on the surface, seems like a one-dimensional character but in some cases be much, much deeper than that without needing to act like a melodramatic twig. In summary, they are the poor man's three-trick pony, except we never get to see the first-trick.
Anger is a secondary emotion meaning it is rooted in some other emotion you don't know how to control and process. so instead it becomes an action through anger. Think of any instance in which anger is justified, it will always be in response to emotional pain that in the moment you are unable to handle. It is a useful tool, but if you don't know how to quell that anger and resolve the primary emotion it has come from you begin to damage yourself. As that unresolved trauma grows it expands outward to your loved ones and eclipses who you are. Godo said it best in that anger is the place people go when they can't look sadness in the eye without wavering.
The fact that there’s the characters that grow and improve past the anger, and there’s types like Doomslayer who just gets more and more mad and never stops going apeshit

8:43 "when you see a character mellowed out, matured, more calm, it provides an incredible look back on how far they've come since the beginning of the story" My favorite example on this regard is eren in the marley arc(hobo eren). For a character who's nicknames were "angry german kid" or "suicidal blockhead", seeing his maturity not only in his appearance, but in his demeanor, how calm, understanding and wise he has become. Great stuff man....(only to revert back to a more toxic version of his old self in the next arc)
I honestly would like to see a character who got angry because they have either heard or seen the result of something traumatic, so they get mad. Having a character that is able to sympathize with the hurt, and is able to accurately imagine their pain, then in a way they just did the next best thing to experiencing it themselves. Try to picture what kind of pain a person went through by imagining yourself in that situation, in high detail. The smell, the senses, the sights. Hell, we can make our mouths water just by thinking about food, despite there not being any. If someone was able to do that, and still stay relatively calm, they have excellent self-control.
We all love seeing our favorite characters going berserk..or in other words getting angry.. Anger just feels powerful, which is probably why I and a lot of people gravitated to eminem because of the rage and it just feels so empowering to the listener
I watched the last "Beauty of the Angry Character" video, the other day. My first video of yours actually. It was great and I binged a bunch of your other videos after that. You told me to watch this one too, and it did not disappoint. Thanks for the advice, keep up the great work!
People like to harp on about Dragon Ball's many forms and power ups, but the catalyst for them - more often than not - is rage, sorrow, fear, desperation, and so forth. It's the manifestation of a characters extreme emotions; and I think - as silly as people can sometimes think they are - that's what makes those explosions of power and revitalised resolve pretty damn hype. It usually happens after a great deal of adversity, too, which adds to the catharsis of the moment. I also think it's why the screaming that the community also likes to take jabs at isn't bad. It's an outpouring of this emotion. It's also about digging deep in order to tap into their incredible power. I imagine transforming requires a great deal of effort to access - like lifting heavier and heavier weights - and to get there they push through the strain on their bodies to achieve it until it becomes second nature (like with how easy it is now, regarding Super Saiyan). When people are a bit vocal (yells and grunts) in the gym you may find it amusing, but you also understand and respect how much they're pushing themselves mentally and physically. I'd say one of the core components of Dragon Ball's power system/battles is raw (unbridled) emotion and catharsis.
The thing I really love about guts's anger is how it's his way to escape from facing his sadness and grief after the eclipse, and how after talking with godo he makes the decision to try perserve everything he still has left and fully face his sadness instead of going on his warpath against the apostles.
Zuko was literally me. Well if he was completely delusional. I had alot of people in my life who are like uncle iroh. Who I mistreated very harshly but they never gave up on me. And my mind being so fucked up at the time i cant even fucking remember what i did or said. Which hurts me alot even till this day because i cant rationalize it if i dont even know what happened.
I love Kirei. I recently finished reading Fate’s original source material; the terrifying 75+ hour visual novel, and oh did I enjoy it. They expanded on Kirei so much and it blew me away. On the side note, your edits have gotten much more creative and chaotic; I like it.
The funny thing about this video is not only is what you are talking about engaging, but, damn is the music selection just S-tier. Mick Gordon is always a blast to listen to.
What I love about angry characters is their self destructive behavior and means of achieving their goal. You want to see their objective fulfilled but at the same time wish they find their inner peace before their anger proves to be beyond mental and physical to be healed.
This gave nostalgia from when I first watched your content. Absolutely great video, far better then the original. P.S. And I hope your having enjoyable an pleasant journey through the nasu..... i mean fate verse.
Incredible! I haven't watched a lot of "angry" movies/manga/anime or played "angry" game, but your analysis was something that made me like them more. Thank you!
I used to have angy issues when I was younger I still have it but now I take it out on myself in the gym, it's not the healthiest thing since I can push myself harder and injury myself just like recently with my forearm. But it's better than accumulating and exploding over little things, and seeing characters doing this taking out the anger into an enemy or whatever it gives you satisfaction since you can't do it without going to jail.
I really enjoy watching your videos and as someone that wants to write mangas (maybe not the drawing part cause I can not draw to save my life)or a novel seeing your videos like this one help me to create different types of characters in with different and unique personalities. I'm only 16 so I have a lot more to learn about writing a story but watching your videos helps me broaden my knowledge on how to. Thank you for making such great content and hope you can keep making more so that you help others like me 🙏🙏💛💛
An underrated angry character that I absolutely LOVE is Takeshi Sendo from Hajime No Ippo. He's one of the best examples of how to use anger as a tool. Naturally, Sendo is wild and bombastic person. He's a good guy, but his personality can be a bit much for people and this carries over into his boxing style. He often is quick to rush in with no defense and throw his boxing skills to the side preferring to brawl, but when he gets PISSED is when he shines. There are moments in the series where he's being outboxes by an opponent to the brink of losing, but then Sendo will enter a state of "concentrated fury". He quiets down, gathers himself, focuses, uses his actual skills that he's accumulated over the years and KOS his opponents. He's so much fun.
One of my (if not the) favourite Characters is Son Gohan from Dragon Ball Z. Him turning into Super Saiyan 2 was always my favourite Scene in all of Media. I could Probably do a 1 Hour Breakdown on why this Scene is so great and important to me. No matter how many times i see it, the Moment the Music starts playing, and we see the tears in his Eyes as he has just transformed into Super Saiyan 2, it send chills down my Spine.
This video is so damn good I haven't seen your videos in a while but damn you really improved a lot since the last time I saw you Keep up the good work man:)
I can see what you mean about how good it feels to watch angry characters, as someone that had struggled with anger issues, to read Berserk and to see Guts to come and go from his own anger after bearing unspeakable trauma, I could see myself in bits of that anger and therefore it felt like I let out that anger vicariously through him as a fictional character. But I guess it also depends on what kind of character they are, I can empathize with Kratos and Asura, but I don't relate to them as strongly since their life experiences are way too different from what is immediately familiar to me. It also comes from characters who aren't necessarily 'cool' or 'strong', they can be weak and even sometimes the antagonists of the story, but their anger captivates me if I can understand where it's coming from. I don't know. I also do get one hell of a catharsis when stories actually dare to portray female characters going apeshit and horrifying and violent with their anger like male characters are more often allowed. Gosh that's beautiful. Anyway, good video.
Because they can express what we cannot. I think it's because anger feels inherently rightious. It's a reaction. I think the characters serve as an outlet for the audience to let out their own pent up rage in a less conflict inducing way than expressing it in reality. People always settle in life and they keep at it because they hope it get's better. In opposition these characters allow us to live out our fantasy of only taking what we desire, and for a lot of people that is revenge (common theme in these characters) but in the real world that means we would lose everything that's keeping us docile in the first place.
Cuz I was angry at myself, at the world. I wanted hope and it didn't matter where it came from. I found my peace and I hope everyone else having the same problem does too.
Sorry I know this is not entirely related to the video, but ai have been thinking on the purpose of art from an evolutionary perspective and realized imagining stories could be a way of processing our own emotions. People get angry at people. Making up stories let’s us better explore the roots of that anger. Become more self aware of why. Then you can share than info with others who can develop more self awareness reading your story. Stories and art are so valuable because they allow us to learn more about how we think. Even if the people in the stories go through situations we would never be in, it can prepare us for situations in which we develop similar emotions. We can learn acting rashly from anger can lead to terrible long term consequences. We can learn what emotions may have inspired the anger in the first place. That would be so much more difficult to explain in normal language. Sorry for the ramble.
Most of the time I am attracted to those types of characters, I do not know if it is because it is like fighting against something in the fiercest way possible, it really is like determination but combined with the natural impulse that one has

That or his family, his friends and that of humanity.
@@justaguyonyoutube4592 it’s both
I like how you pointed out that Guts, Kratos, and Zuko have learned to temper themselves while Doom Slayer is even more unequivocally pissed
Anger just feels powerful, which is probably why I and a lot of people gravitated to eminem because of the rage and it just feels so empowering to the listener
Remastering a classic, this is going to be a fun video.
7:29 I've been waiting a long time for someone to put the Guts grin in the me and the boys meme. Great job, lad. Great job.
The thing I really love about guts's anger is how it's his way to escape from facing his sadness and grief after the eclipse, and how after talking with godo he makes the decision to try perserve everything he still has left and fully face his sadness instead of going on his warpath against the apostles.
This channel is criminally underrated.
Great video as always!
the video just came out...but thank you
@@TheMaskedMan he didn't even watch this shit yet 😂😂

@Lionard Kirsch Something happened with the app, don't know what. It's not the 1st time it happens.
@Lionard Kirsch But don't worry,I almost fixed the problem,it won't be a bother anymore.
Bro this is unironically one of the best edited videos I’ve seen this year, good work
I always loved intensity in stories, and anger/rage is the easiest and somewhat best way to feel that intensity.
1:08 oh no. I know what that exact "GRIFFITH" is from. I applaud you, Masked Man.
yo props to whoever edited this video. seems like a lot of effort went into it and the jokes are hilarious.
Thank you!
Love that you used the biblically accurate angel at 3:49, that thing occupied my mind for awhile after first witnessing it
I used to have angy issues when I was younger I still have it but now I take it out on myself in the gym, it's not the healthiest thing since I can push myself harder and injury myself just like recently with my forearm. But it's better than accumulating and exploding over little things, and seeing characters doing this taking out the anger into an enemy or whatever it gives you satisfaction since you can't do it without going to jail.
the editing and memes used in this video are great
I really enjoy watching your videos and as someone that wants to write mangas (maybe not the drawing part cause I can not draw to save my life)or a novel seeing your videos like this one help me to create different types of characters in with different and unique personalities. I'm only 16 so I have a lot more to learn about writing a story but watching your videos helps me broaden my knowledge on how to. Thank you for making such great content and hope you can keep making more so that you help others like me 🙏🙏💛💛
Loving the new vids. Quality is through the roof
Dope vid, super glad your vids back as well, big cheers 🥂
Asura's goated ngl
Top notch editing
This video is so damn good
I haven't seen your videos in a while but damn you really improved a lot since the last time I saw you
Keep up the good work man:)
1:00 Holy shit the Tool/Baki joke is the best 🤣
The editing in this video is really good
I just love your editing.
I love how the Slayer is constantly vibrating with frenzy.
It's the little things, man.
"Being held hostage in Brazil"
Being a Brazilian, I feel the same hahha
When the hell did Masked start being so funny😂 Great video as always!
“you’re making me angry, you won’t like it when I’m angry.”
Me: The audience watching would definitely like it.
Awesome video, and Masked activates good mode editing
*God
The humour on this vid is on point and soo good
Are you going to make a video on the Beauty of the Rival Character?
Because they can express what we cannot.
I think it's because anger feels inherently rightious. It's a reaction. I think the characters serve as an outlet for the audience to let out their own pent up rage in a less conflict inducing way than expressing it in reality. People always settle in life and they keep at it because they hope it get's better. In opposition these characters allow us to live out our fantasy of only taking what we desire, and for a lot of people that is revenge (common theme in these characters) but in the real world that means we would lose everything that's keeping us docile in the first place.
I love the editing in this video
This man has upped his content! Great job man, keep doing what you love homie! ❤
I also like to add that Jason Todd is my fav DC character for those reasons you mentioned.
Cuz I was angry at myself, at the world. I wanted hope and it didn't matter where it came from. I found my peace and I hope everyone else having the same problem does too.
"Im being made hostage in Brazil"
*WHERE?*
I wanna help keep you hostage '^'
Love the angry characters, but seeing them getting chased by their past when they finally calm down is very sad.
Pd: read Fire Punch
The book Catcher in the Rye has a classic example of the Angry Character. The movie Taxi Driver also a good and classic example
Loving the new style of videos
Guts going absolutely BERSERK in depths of the Sea... made my day, thx Masked man.
Your Editing is too good Mask, perfect video
I think Tanjiro is one of the best examples of a truly good righteous anger
Holy hell bury the light playing in the background?masked man seems too motivated today
Great to see this video back again. Let’s hope the other one gets back soon
Most of the time I am attracted to those types of characters, I do not know if it is because it is like fighting against something in the fiercest way possible, it really is like determination but combined with the natural impulse that one has
LOVE this video! Very well done, Masked!
Masterpiece video as always, you never miss Masked....
6:45 I see you with dmc references masked glad to see your a DMC fan as well 👀
9:40 ayo demi fiend as well (the guy with black and green tattoo) pls tell me you also played SMT
I feel once Demon Slayer finally gets fully animated, we'll be able to look toward it as a great example of character creation in terms of emotion.
Asuras videos are back let's go
Yeap, I agree. Once you're in the League, you can't get any deeper.
