Some of the designs I've seen of yours sort of actually fit what's described here, even if not intentionally. Take, say, Ocho and Apophis from Dungeon Dynamite. Ocho (is that how it's spelt?) looks like he'd be confident, care about his appearance and try to be the star of the show. Apophis fits the shape geometry decently as well, being very square to suggest the reliability and rounded edges, which fit to his more quiet and supporting role. This shape logic could be applied to Euler as well. In short, claim credit for good character design and run for the hills.
Yours do communicate. The mark of good character designers is when you can convey the messages without intended to. If your mind can just feel the characters as they are, your doing it right
That's part of what makes him so great. He's not a stylized or over the top character like most anime protagonists. He's just a kid in way over his head and everything about him reflects that. His lack of visual flair makes him stand out against the more vibrant designs of characters like Misato, Rei, Asuka and even Gendo with his iconic pose. He looks like a normal person surrounded by anime characters. Even comparing him to someone like Light from Death Note, Shinji never gets those moments of visual flair and stylization that accompany Light's more powerful moments. Both look like normal people but Shinji is treated as mundane visually. The story wouldn't work if he was anything else.
That's a sign of a great design. The Persona series has some really great design, especially in 5, where everyone can simultaneously blend into a crowd, yet unique enough to easily stand out to us.
notice how his shirt tucks in sliming his waist, which gives him a femanine look, along with his lanky limbs and shy smile it suggest a fragile but kind hearted being. Its incredible how somthing so small can make such a huge impact on the character.
One thing I would like to add, a good character design works in basically EVERY art style, not only in a single one, using that certain color palette, those clothes, that body type, and even the size comparison with other character in the universe, just watch at some The Simpsons intros, they change the art in a lot of them to things completely different and redesigning all character for fit in that art style, but even then that base for the character is still recognisable and tell what you need to know about the character.
One of the character design mistakes (I believe) are stereotypical anime face. If all of the characters have the same face shape, it would be hard to vary them. The reason why I like JBA and other old animes they have varieties of faces and identity. If anime faces varied, you can make all the characters memorable.
You're right. Animes like JJBA, One Piece, Demon slayer, etc has one of the best character designs in anime. Because the designs defines it personality traits while still maintaining it's distinct look.
There are also character designs that have this same face syndrome but can be depicted through their hair, which is possible to differentiate personality in a glance if done properly
The eyes. The eyes can totally make or break a character design. You can’t really put cute baby eyes on a reserved, introverted, cold guy and make it make sense.
One aspect of character design you didn't mention which I think can be used to really interesting effect is posture. Some really good examples of this are Griffith from Berserk (always regal with a raised chin, open solders and and arched back) or Spike from Cowboy Bebop (slouched with eyes peering up and hunched, closed shoulders). What's interesting about this to me is how it's one of the elements of character design that can subtly change near instantly. In the final arc of the Bebop anime, Spike straitens up into an aggressive, defiant stance whereas at the start of the third act of the Golden Age arc in Berserk, Griffith can do nothing but slouch and withdraw, indicating a psychological change accompanying the physical trauma he suffered.
A principal of cartoons is the centre of mass line, if you look at Tom and Jerry the line was used to communicate motion however the same principle can be applied to stature and gravitas which is why Griffith always appears regal.
John McDaniel this is actually a very important aspect in my opinion. When space dandy was still airing (mind you this was my first anime) and I saw the way he walked and stood I knew his personality was in relation to Spike from cowboy bebop DESPITE not having not seen bebop at that time and only knowing of it from other media, and I was spot on in thinking so. Posture conveys the character's personality more so than things like clothes in my opinion, similar to real people. Someone can wear the same clothes but their posture will still distinguish their characteristics.
And Guts will almost exclusively stand, or sit, in either an aggressive or defensive stance. He can stand tall, with a massive sword across his back, ready to beat down demons and men alike. Or he can take up a stance devoted to shielding Casca. Another example is probably most prominent in the Golden Age arc as Guts sleeps with his sword, often perched against an object, seemingly protecting it.
when designing characters I like to follow an 80/20 rule, where 80% of the character's design makes sense and tells a story, and if I want, I can use that last 20% just to add flair and style that may not mean anything. Usually though, I chose something that seems in character for the person I've just created, so at least it still ties in and now you know this kid really like bugs or space or cats, etc.
Jotaros design is so good, that even drawn in it's simplest form it looks bad ass Just look at my pfp, Rodrick went from a chad to a C H A D in no time
Fun fact! In fashion Design school, they taught us that fashion sketching is 8-9 heads rather than 7. That may relate to why jojo characters are that tall
Considering how Araki also takes very liberal influences from high fashion and artists like Paul Gauguin and Antonio Lopez to generate his character designs I'd say you're spot on
@@ramonzapato1350 why is it 8 heads? Well there's no concrete reason why. Some theorise that the "ideal" height for showing clothi g is 5"8 at the time or it helps with pattern making of the garment
@@Bonovasitch Araki literally collaberated with Gucci in a clothing line, and is the only manga artist to date to be featured in the Louvre. Man is part of high fashion, and he earned that place
AoT is good at making variations of body shapes and faces. for examples, Annie and Hanji have aquiline noses which is quite rare in anime, and i find them appealing and unique at the same time
That was one of the first things I noticed in AoT! In so much anime the characters have the exact same faces, and their hair and eye color are the only way you can tell them apart. In Attack on Titan, the characters all have unique features
The great thing about Jotaro as well is that just by making his uniform white in Part 4, he gives off a strong visual indication of a captain, which not only reflects his maturity and occupation, but also his transition from high school punk but to his new role within the group of leader and mentor. It makes him look reliable, wise and and like he is in control.
In my opinion Good character design is a design that compliments the personality of the character. For example when I first sore Bakugo first thing I thought is he an delinquent
Well, it depends on what type of show you are going for. If you are going for much action, characters with standing out design work, because you can't really mix them and you get to know them even in fight scenes
@@柳-r4l because if you don't have a good visual memory, you may confuse with who the characters are, especially if there are two of them that look similar. Also, a good design makes the character more "special", along with their personality. Cuz while the personality makes the character's decisions, the design, as we said, makes their recognizability.
Jotaro's part 3 design consists of triangles and squares, representing his outer agressive/rude nature, and still showing his reliability. In part 4, he has less triangularity, showing that he has matured and is more calm.
but even the clones have good character design. a rigidness that tells us that they are uniform, with the same shapes for every trooper, symbolizing an almost hive mind of perfect structure, with the square frames of their bodies showing that even within their ranks they are orderly without fail. The only difference between each trooper is the color of their armor, all leading up with stronger colors until black, signifying rank at first glance.
Thank you so much for this I am a 13 year old who is writing and drawing a story by myself, and I am putting everything including my heart and soul into creating something that will be great and will be loved by people in the future You have helped me greatly at designing my own characters
Which is where the issue comes in that the majority of anime characters these days seem to borrow from the same archetype. This often goes beyond merely their visual appearance but down to their personality. The most glaring example is the typical protagonist. Average male age 15-18 with medium build, short black or brown hair, tends to be below average in terms of academic intelligence. If weapons are concerned, then they are most likely a swordsman. The message is clear, they're supposed to represent the target audience reading/watching these stories, they are designed as such for the sake of relatability, but I kinda consider this a bullshit thing to center your protagonist, the pivot of your story around. Protagonist looking/acting like a Japanese pleb doesn't actually make them more reliable, when you think about it. I can relate to Yugioh characters just fine, even if I don't have their otherworldly mind crushing hair, I can relate to Johnny Joestar better than Kirito even if I'm not a blonde paraplegic in the 19th century. "Relatability" is something a character should act out, not a mere indication that they should be a mask for the audience to pick up and wear. What making a protagonist a "default" design ended up just making them drown in the pool of billions of other 15-18 years old short, black haired protagonist, making them unable to stand out. It's a "safe play" in the way that you're not actually accomplishing anything by playing this safe.
I’m making a manga as a fun side project and I tried to make the main character,Sayuri Fujasaki’s design intersting: Sayuri wears pink cat stockings and a striped tie instead of white socks and a black tie. This way you can tell she isn’t very rule abiding but due to the fact the accessories Sayuri is meant to be cute you can tell she isn’t a delinquent. Her shoes are white instead of black and Sayuri drew hearts on the back with a permanent marker.Sayuri drawing on her shoes can also tell you, along with a backpack with drawings and doodles she did herself are meant to show off Sayuri likes art. This is just her uniform by the way Sayuri has an assassin outfit too but I’ll stop at that
Your character can be a literal furry, your character can look like a stalactite and your character can have lips for a head for god’s sake! BUT PLEASE, give it good description and development!!!
Yeah, Jojo's author sure knows how is done. He has his style but he also has STYLE. I can never forget those first 3 arcs. Man! I wish Battle Tendency would've lasted more more more! (I also think the landscape has a factor here)
Of course, of course! It all comes back to *narrative!* As a designer this is always an important reminder. Once you have a certain amount of technical skill anyone can make a visually appealing character design, but what you've brought up here is what separates a pretty design from an effective one. Taking the example girl from the start, her design's fine, cute even, but there's no *narrative* - nothing to tell us who she is or what she stands for outside of "cute girl" in a show full of cute girls. Personality comes from their stories, their history, what they've done and what they want to tell the world about themselves, and an effective character design should reflect that. Excellently presented and explained, thank you. This has got me excited to design some characters! 💪
Going off of this, the cute girl (forgive me, it's been a long time since I watched Toradora) and Taiga go to the same school and are restricted in what they can present themselves with. A good designer will see past the uniform. If you look at Taiga she's grouchy and is a slob. Both of these aspects are reflected in her character design. She's short (a common trope of short characters is they are either childish, child-like, or quick to anger), she always carries a scowl, and her hair looks rather messy compared to the other girl's more straight hair. It's not a perfect design, as in there's definitely more they could have done with it, but it is a very easy design to glance at and get an immediate opinion of the character.
I honestly think the girl's design is better than you and SEW give it credit for. Her long, dark hair is a common characteristic of anime girls who are meant to be beautiful. Unlike the girl on the left, it's also symmetrical and thus pleasing to the eye. This tells us that she takes care of herself and her looks. The girl in the middle can't be a fashion model, because she's obviously shy, based on her eyes. I haven't seen the show myself, but from the clips I've seen, I'm also pretty sure the blue haired girl's taller and more... well endowed than the orange haired chick. Again, common traits of a beautiful character.
It’s Lucky Land Communication logo which is the team that helped Araki with working on the manga. You can actually see the hand symbol as an Easter eggs in many different openings and ending such P3 ED1 and P4 OP1
I feel like people dont apreciate enough the character design of edward eleric, fmab/fma. Its absolutely wonderful how not only you get to see him age and grow more mature and learn throughout his journey, you can also realise how his style changed when he got rid of the bright red coat, the shiny pants and the big boots making him stand out in a world where everyone prefers to wear desaturated color to slowly as he matures giving up on the attention he wanted and focusing on other more important things. I love fma/fmab's perspective of time and how the characters evolve with it
Watching this again, I remembered that there's a picture of a younger Jotaro with his hat looking brand new, which I'm reading as that hat was a gift from his mother, and he love it so much that he never takes it away (like Arnold and his tiny hat) which caused to ended so torn away in the end. And that is a sign that despite his cold attitude he truly love his mother.
True Epic Marschmallow BUT! Kirito only has power in his MMO’s, but Taiga doesn’t play MMO’s meaning Taiga could beat Kirito! (Plus if Kirito won he’d still be static and boring either way so Taiga wins in a way)
It's rare to have a protagonist that's so visually _unappealing_ -- I mean Luffy's dressed in rags, he's skinny as a twig, and he always has that goofy grin on his face. He looks ridiculous, but that's what makes him so unique. Saitama is the same.
Yeah, but those "good" traits personality-wise are paired with "bad" (or ugly) traits appearance-wise. But that's what makes him such a memorable character.
Beautifully put. designing a character has always been a major challenge to anyone who wishes to go out and do it. But once you get the hang of it, it’s such an accomplishment. However, another thing I’d like to add is the use of music. When designing a character of my own, or for getting inspiration, I often stick on a song or sometimes a whole album to get a feel of what I want my character to be. And from what I’ve learned, a lot of people tend to do this too. But as for the appearance of a character, I think Jotaro’s theme in part 3 also conveys a strong and somewhat sophisticated entrance or statement when he’s going up against an enemy or simply just there to show the viewer he’s there.
@@dcardigan13 lol, for me that video was as well the reason why i watched klk. Ryuko's design struck me so god damn hard i stopped everything i did, clicked on the video, watched it, got mad because she wasn't even mentioned and scrolled the comments for an hour or so... The show wasn't at all what i expected it to be, judging by that video's thumbnail (serious, boyish and angry), but oh lord am i glad with the end result; easily one of my fav anime of all time.
@Charles Gerard actually Akira does have a pretty big forehead, but *TETSUOOOOOOOOOO* has a bigger one. Read the akira manga it's much better and that's saying alot because the movie is straight fire.
as a high school drama student, we have to consider character design a lot in terms of costume, make up etc, and justify them, and from what i've gathered, i'm not necessarily the best at drama, but a good character design is memorable, it's eye catching, it's different, and it has to symbolise something that the character stands for, whether thats a personality trait, a theme behind the character, what their motivations are etc. all these things must be took into consideration when making a character design
One of the best character designs is Mob from "Mob Psycho 100". Mob wears nothing of any significance and moves like a robot without emotion which is exactly what the character is, Mob is simply a boy who is boring.
I picked up the first manga of Mob Psycho 100 and Jojo's bizarre adventure on the same day and while those styles are the complete opposite, I 100% prefer Mob. It adds to the humor and it's way less stiff than Jojo is. Even on just the cover you can tell ONE is a fantastic artist. The parts where he's at the cult meeting and forced to drink milk have so much detail while still keeping the style. Just because it's simple and the lines are a bit jiggly doesn't mean it's bad. The hands for example are not something a bad artist could draw. It's a joke manga and the style adds to it. Just because it doesn't look particularly anime doesn't mean it's trash. If mob psycho was in a stereotypical anime style, it wouldn't work.
@@colorbar.s Which part was it? Araki's art changes over time. Part 7 & 8 are extremely beautiful, while parts 1 & 2 are more or less have ridiculous body porportions that honestly aren't very good.
I always knew Saitama mess around in a yellow pyjama because unlike other cool looking characters he doesn't have to take things serious ever. I always knew it in my subconscious but just found that out.
how to draw a good character design: step one: draw a ripped dude with a pose that's 300% breaking his back step two: congratulations! you've just created a jojos character
You also need to add a really handsome chiseled face close to Handsome Squidward face, wacky unusual hair, and a bright neon background with the Japanese word “menacing” or fabulous stands also posing in the back.
Eh, I disagree. It's always about the *personality*, for me: just because I'll remember Anime characters with designs so "desperate" they look like clowns doesn't mean they're "good" characters.
We're obviously talking about design here And you don't need to make characters look like clowns to make them recognizable, Agent 47 has a pretty iconic and simple design
@Soryuu Rengazan Meh, I'd argue Agent 47 is different because he's famous for being a *video game* character --which is a medium that's meant to be _played_ rather than (passively) watched like Anime or Film. So many video game (playable) characters are bland & uninteresting characters simply because they don't need to have any personality (which may actually make it easier for players to "feel" like said characters). I mean, I'd bet anything nobody'd actually like/remember Agent 47 if he started out as an Anime character.
^Found the fan who feels concerned. As you're looking for a "bad" reason, imo, it somehow casts shadow on potential pieces of advice or interesting comments. But hey, "iS iT a JoJo ReFeReNcE ?"
I once heard from the artist who drew pyramid head from the Silent Hill series that his pyramid head sympolises pain and danger. I love crazy character designs
one of my favorite series character design-wise, while not an anime (though the anime adaptation exists), is still ace attorney. there's so so many characters, but almost every single character you can immediately infer at least some part of their personality from their designs and, possibly even more importantly, the few limited poses they make. it's very good for a series that has so many characters, even side characters from less memorable cases still have fans from what I've seen! also good job for mentioning shinobu, she's my favorite nmh character for sure and she has a wonderful design.
Okay, as someone who is currently designing a few characters for me and my friends for a side project, this is extremely helpful. Especially for my personal original character. Thank you once again for showing me the basics of something I'm already majorly into. First JoJo, then wrestling, now character design.
this was very well explained, thank you. as someone who is currently very lost when it comes to making efficient character designs, this is really helpful without being too overcomplicated.

Bro, I needed to learn what semiotics are and how they work for school but never got the hang of it, you literally taking Jotaro apart step by step was a better example and explanation than everything my teacher has ever done and the explanation for the shapes was actually really useful. I didn’t think I’d learn something while watching random YT videos
Another Great Video :) an example for me I show I HATED The character Designs for at first was SPectacular Spider-man but then I watched it and nowadays its My Favorite Animated Series of all time haha
I still don't love the designs, I prefer the more realistic while slightly stylized designs of the 90's comics. but it is my favourite animated series of all time too!
Saitama's simplicity actually stands out immensely considering he's surrounded by such highly detailed and painstakingly designed characters so it actually works in his favour. Whenever Saitama is in a group you can always instantly point him out even amongst characters from other shows

John McDaniel interesting observation
I sit inside playing video games and drawing useless stuff all day and my posture is perfect come at me

when designing characters I like to follow an 80/20 rule, where 80% of the character's design makes sense and tells a story, and if I want, I can use that last 20% just to add flair and style that may not mean anything. Usually though, I chose something that seems in character for the person I've just created, so at least it still ties in and now you know this kid really like bugs or space or cats, etc.
This is good advice.
80/20 for main characters and a 70/30 for side characters. 👍

Now that you mention it, AOT does have very distinct characters

Why getting spoiled about a character's personality by his character design is good ?
@@柳-r4l because it makes them incredibly recognizable
Well, it depends on what type of show you are going for. If you are going for much action, characters with standing out design work, because you can't really mix them and you get to know them even in fight scenes

Thats why JoJo is great, less edgy more romance to the era they were made in, such as Josuke (Part 4) during the whole "juvenile delinquent" buzz.
> below average intelligence
That's why I love Lelouch.
Freshly Memed Jotaro was still great in his Part 3 design
I’m making a manga as a fun side project and I tried to make the main character,Sayuri Fujasaki’s design intersting:
Sayuri wears pink cat stockings and a striped tie instead of white socks and a black tie.

Well, araki artstyle tends to change between different part. But they all are great imo
Good comment haha! :D
youve summed it up perfectly.
Again, common traits of a beautiful character.

funny how Luffy has a very simple design compared to other OP characters and yet stands out the most
well oda is a design genius , onepiece has the most diverse cartoon character lineup of every existing comic
ulf ulf ulf One Piece is a mastetpiece
It's rare to have a protagonist that's so visually _unappealing_ -- I mean Luffy's dressed in rags, he's skinny as a twig, and he always has that goofy grin on his face. He looks ridiculous, but that's what makes him so unique.
Saitama is the same.
but luffy also looks adorable in a way like a child, with lots of charisma and sympathy , that like out of a text book for animated characters

So many video game (playable) characters are bland & uninteresting characters simply because they don't need to have any personality (which may actually make it easier for players to "feel" like said characters).
I mean, I'd bet anything nobody'd actually like/remember Agent 47 if he started out as an Anime character.
@Dan Videos
Ah, OK. Yeah, I've never watched Gintama so I didn't know it was a joke :p
How to make a good character desgin:
Step 1: *J O J O*
Step 2: Your done, congrats.
50% of comments are normal
*200% COMMENTS IS ABOUT JOJO*
Joven Sanchez for some odd reason stand users seem to be drawn to each other
This must be the work of an enemy stand.
Okay so what’s wrong?
^Found the fan who feels concerned.
As you're looking for a "bad" reason, imo, it somehow casts shadow on potential pieces of advice or interesting comments. But hey, "iS iT a JoJo ReFeReNcE ?"
200+50=250% ? Which is more than 100%? Are you stupid or something?
I once heard from the artist who drew pyramid head from the Silent Hill series that his pyramid head sympolises pain and danger. I love crazy character designs
I mean he also drags around an enormous bloodstained sword. I think that sufficiently conveys the “danger” aspect. XD
5:20 how did you guys get an actual real-life picture of Josuke?
Dont ask
Just watch the DiU chapter 1 movie. Fyi, they are prob not gonna release ch2 or 3
He read the manga
people when pompadours exist
one of my favorite series character design-wise, while not an anime (though the anime adaptation exists), is still ace attorney. there's so so many characters, but almost every single character you can immediately infer at least some part of their personality from their designs and, possibly even more importantly, the few limited poses they make. it's very good for a series that has so many characters, even side characters from less memorable cases still have fans from what I've seen! also good job for mentioning shinobu, she's my favorite nmh character for sure and she has a wonderful design.
4:53 seems Jotaro's torso has the shape of the golden rectangle...
If only he learned the spin he would be op ad
Ah the Golden rectangle
Shadman...no!!
This is really helpful to a lot of artists and those who want to pursue a career in animation or character design thank u so much!
I am a simple, cultured human being. I see anything jojo related, I click, watch, and like.
Kotori Minalinsky hello brother
My dakimakura Dio totally agrees with you
I like your profile pic.
damn me too
HELLO
Wolf: "Do you like blonde girls dressed as Victorian maid-"
Me: "TOHRU!"
Wolf: "Let me finish, that also happen to be half drago-"
Me: "TOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHRUUUUUUU"
Kntrytnt I read that in his voice
*Small* blonde girl... Nope, can't be Tohru.
Lol I was going to say Victoria from Gosick, but the. He said half dragon...
Kntrytnt shut up bitch
Am I the only one who thought of Priscilla and Yorshka?
How to draw a perfect character:
Step 1: Draw danny devito
Mason Ald you got the right idea
I hate your pfp it makes me cringe and think of how you managed to beat me with the die It still pisses me off. I know you cheated Josuke and I wont forgive you for it.
@Invell E so sad
Honestly, in a fictional context, yes. He has those curves and rectangles that just say he's consistently an absolute lad.
JaxBlade I loved the character design from Spec Spiderman then again I prefer Stylization
Fancy seeing you here dood. Love your videos man.
JaxBlade I prefer the 60's spiderman, in all of it's memetastic glory
I still don't love the designs, I prefer the more realistic while slightly stylized designs of the 90's comics. but it is my favourite animated series of all time too!
woah your here too, i guess you like anime even more than i thought
How to draw a good character:
Draws saitama with no serious face
Sooo.. Denki Kaminari?
ReeseInPiece when he’s lost all his brain cells, yeah
@@reeseinpiece5119 Nice one.
Saitama's simplicity actually stands out immensely considering he's surrounded by such highly detailed and painstakingly designed characters so it actually works in his favour. Whenever Saitama is in a group you can always instantly point him out even amongst characters from other shows
Kada kotowaru
Jotaro's hat is actually part of his body.
Gennylia Dalien It's like the end of a foot, you can remove it and put it back on whenever you want.
Wow, I need to get into Jojo
Ivan Reikavique Its not, the hat is just torn out, it gets removed and we see all his hair on his fight with N'doul
Meta Matt how do explain part 4 and part 6 jotaro then?
President of Whiteistan yeah
So Giorno's hair represents three major donut deaths (Kakyoin, Abacchio, Bucciarati)
-
Polnareff is probably the back donut on Giorno's braid. Wait I just realized Giorno has F*ur Donuts...
Or the donuts are just the donut deaths of part 5, because of Polnareff.
@I dont let mista find out 👀
I-
