My favorite part of berserk is how you can just keep re-reading and with each re-read you notice and perceive things that you didn't in your previous read.
Yeah thats the cherry on top of it all. I am on my third re-read and noticed a couple of small details in sea god arc and got reminded of the most recent chapters tentacle setting. Also seeing the moon light boy now makes it way more interesting and you pay that much more attention to his behavior since its basically Griffith sitting in Cascas arms. I really dont think that Griffith is in control when in boy form though.

@arda cagrici there are books that a better for sure and movies and shows. For me personally, Berserk is up there with them. The main aspect of Berserk that impresses me the most from a literary stand point is Guts’ subtle character growth that ends up being massive over time, along with his psychology. He is just a really damn well written protagonist, and I think he could hold his own in comparison to some of the other greats.

@Neighborhood Snipa no i liked one piece comedy. it was good and made me laugh. but if you are going to write in long paragraphs, i am not interested, no offence. it would be a waste of time for both of us. but i would like to hear your thoughts!
@Neighborhood Snipa yeah i agree to the point that the plot is very creative. but i felt like the story or characters werent very deep. but also side characters are respected very much and also there isnt much of waste of a character. i like that aspect of it. but still when i see people calling it the greatest manga of all time, i just dont get it. it is just a fun anime right? the characters are also one dimensional, for sure. you know what actually triggers me? when people say luffy is better than eren, or sometimes even guts! i know it is just an opinion, but really how? but still I respect it, one of the best shonen mangas, i agree. thnx for sharing. peace!
you kept talking about berserk so i finally started it. and oh man, I scrolled through 2 chapters since last night and I have no idea whats going on but the art, THE ART. everything is so pretty I don't think I can take it.
I don't like commenting, but this is Beserk! so I'll make an exception. I think one of the main reasons I was so into this particular series was because of how unique the relationship between Guts and Griffith was; Guts being a "struggler", with his only known motivation in the beginning being to fight for the sake of living (and vice versa), and Griffith, the "king of longing", someone who needs a reason to keep living, and an insatiable desire to achieve. They're both caught up in the hands of fate, but by becoming friends/comrades they end up finding a kind of solace in each other: Griffith giving guts a reason to fight/live, and Griffith ends up losing sight of his "kingdom" (in a good way). For a while, things are perfect. Unfortunately this is all shattered when Guts finds out Griffith can't/doesn't consider him a friend/equal because he lacks his own dream, ultimately leading to guts leaving to find one, and the fall of Griffith as well as the band of the hawk. This leads to my favorite paradox of this relationship. Despite how well things were when they and the whole crew were together, as long as guts wants to be considered a true friend to Griffith, he can't support him in his dream, or stay by his side. I think Griffith knows this, but nonetheless, doesn't want to lose guts. At the same time, relying so heavily on Guts would (based on his own standards) put him below him, so he can't pursue him either. This is why the eclipse is so important. Griffith is given the chance to regain his form (and than some), and also finds a way to hold on to Guts without losing his pride; By making him hate him. This ensures that Guts will never (really) leave him alone, as he's become his dream. Also! I would highly recommend the book Wired for Story. It mentions a lot of the tips and advice you did in your video, and I'm positive you'd like it! (assuming you haven't read it already)
Berserk is up there and legendary like Akira is.... But since the creator passed away recently (RIP) i notice so many people jump on the bandwagon....... At hte end of the day, its unavoidable.... I just loathe how it takes for creators and artists to pass away before a show/album/comic really gets the love it deserves. I know people that claim berserk is their favorite anime/manga but cant name anyone other than guts, its just weird. In my humble opinion, berserk is in the same echelon as Akira and Princess Mononoke
Black swordsman arc got me super intrigued. Then everything felt like a reset wtih Golden Age, but i had an end point in mind that I was always looking forward to. I knew Griffith would betray Gust somehow and Guts knew him. It introduced all the crazy interdimensional shit also one of my favorite aspects of Berserk is the action. It's precise and fluid AND Guts' damage and being fatigued from a previous fight comes into play well. An injury from a wound that happened in passing mid fight , that type ot stuff
I've never read Berserk. Manga is hard to read for me. But i have read a few manga. (aot, 200 chapters of one piece) i've heard good things about it so i will pick up Berserk after i finish The Promised Neverland.
@@shronk9463 I think 1997 did a great job and only really skipped non essential things (tho the things they skipped obv make the story better and if they have the time they should cover it). Only thing that they skipped that has a huge impact on the story later is skull knight. If they could make an anime with the same level of quality it would be amazing.
I think the Characters on how they act and react to the World and Supporting Characters is the best thing about Berserk. I'll attempt to top it I guess.
I think you might wanna branch out into literature. There are some good stories out there for you to explore. The Conan the Barbarian stories are nice and are kinda similar to Berserk: a stoic, melancholy protagonist going up against impossible odds and indescribable monsters. The Song of Ice and Fire series is also great as well, nothing like the TV show. China Mievielle's Bas Lag trilogy also reeks of lovecraftian, bloodborne-esque vibes if you're interested something more horror oriented.
30:31 and this is the sole reason why I dislike characters like Sinbad. It's like they were made purposely to outshine the Protag in every category character development/scaling could provide. A nice figure to look up at, yes, but a major obstacle to Protag progression and popularity to the masses. The same author of Magi created another manga, felt interesting. Read it, came across a character exactly like Sinbad, and literally stopped reading.
I’m reading berserk right now and I’m on the golden age arc around volume 8 I think and I just wanna say the art looks amazing and it builds suspense like never before with seeing Griffith in the present and the golden age arc being a flashback and stuff like that but I still fail to understand why people think it’s the best manga of all time it’s probably undoubtedly a masterpiece but what makes it better than for example that Attack On Titan because that’s something I know is a masterpiece.
@@tricko8000 I’m done now by the way and holy shit. I got better character development than Naruto from when I said that to what I know now lol. It’s amazing that last chapter… I hope it continues
One of the different plot structures can exist. There are objective criteria but it depends on what type of story you're trying to tell. But yeah great video
Before i read bersrrk all i heard was how much the seriea fell off aftwr the golden age arc, i seriously cant comprehend how people come to that conclusion.... imo it only gets better as it goes
Imo, it didn’t fall off. The world building only got better and better after the Golden Age Arc, but you can’t deny that Guts, Casca, and Griffith were at the peak of their characterization in the Golden Age.
So, Berserk, Monsters and One Piece are my favorites Manga from years and years. I love how Guts and Johann are writing. I discover your channel but sure to devour all the contain 😉
I think you hit pretty much every mark as why Berserk is my #1 manga of all time. I also just started 20th Century Boys because of you my dude. You gotta do a video like this for that series.
I feel like your main character can actually have more intrigue if they can be taken out of the story and the world as a whole wouldn't change very much ( Gon, Midoriya, ect...), making them feel more relatable. But then again that depends on the how much you want the mc to be involved in world-changing events, so this is something that has to be considered on a case-to-case basis. another w video btw
I know you're primarily a manga channel but have you thought about watching anime that should be or can only be enjoyed in anime form? Stuff like Gurren Lagann, Evangelion, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Satoshi Kon movies, Mononoke, Mushishi, Cowboy Bebop, Serial Experiments Lain, Revolutionary Girl Utena ect.
The madman actually did it! Please carry on making long form stuff, because this was good! I'd love to see a long form video on Monster or any of Urasawa's works, or Blame, it'd be interesting to watch (plus I just love hearing people's analyses on Monster lol).

Have you read Miura interviews? They are all very enlightening, and each of them clearly shows that Miura truly love his craft with all of his passion. You could get glimpses what really make Berserk into what it is now, and one conclusion that really stuck with me is how Berserk never went into so called "transition/softening".
Thank you for this video and for your channel and all that you do. Im a lover of this story and a writer as well, so i really appreciate this. Be well.
I'm of the impression that the only way to do a Berserk anime right is to have someone on staff with a good concept of color and it's use. When I'm forced to explain this I usually use Frank Miller's "Sin City" as an example. Berserk is drawn in and overwhelming amount of black and white to emphasize (I believe) the multifaceted contrasts throughout. I think it should go as follows: - Golden age arc (starting in full pastels and muted tones and growing into scenes more vibrant colors as he accepts his place in The Band. This captures Guts' outlook that he was only living to get up the next day, and has a pessimistic view of the world around him, but is given a "light" (color) by Griffith and The Band of the Falcon) - The Eclipse (The breaking point. When all color (hope) is drained, and Guts is forced to see the world in just that: Black and White) - The Black Swordsman (The only color acceptable to me here is red for blood, and silver/blue for tears and Pick (as a source of comedy and "hope" in of himself, he should always have color)) - Conviction Arc (I believe that in this, depending on the perspective (i.e. Farniese, Serpico ect...) There should be color added to the iris of particular characters at key moments) - Falcon of the Millennium Empire Arc (As guts slowly assembles his possy, and they in turn get their magic items and grow together as a team (ultimately making him forget his vengeance) I would slowly reintroduce color. The moments of respite, a smile, or other such scenes as a way to signify him coming back into his full humanity) I think the true reason that there hasn't been a good Berserk adaptation is the underutilization of Miura's own lack of color
My favorite part of berserk is how you can just keep re-reading and with each re-read you notice and perceive things that you didn't in your previous read.

berserk actually helped me process a bunch of shit that i have been feeling. the idea of looking up to another human being, a person who looks down on you and doesn't see you as an equal, and then being let down by that person in the worst kind of way, leading to resentment and loss of direction. I see myself in guts, which made re-reading the series post ch 364 really cathartic. when i finished reading the story it felt like it was my turn to live my life and get past my obstacles. My turn to let myself be vulnerable and put down my resentment. shit hits hard
"Berserk: How To Write Manga" - you make regular releases of a great manga with a 'struggler' as the main characters, eventually posing that onto your readers making them strugglers and enteral readers of the manga, always waiting and hoping for a new chapter release.
Greatest manga of all time? Piss off, one of the greatest stories in all of fiction, my friend!!
Lol, but nah seriously great video! Love this channel so much and although I loved berserk before your channel opened the door for me into thr world of the Berserk community
GOAT. I love Berserk so much.
Berserk is up there with the Witcher and the lord of the rings for me it’s one of the best dark fantasy stories ever created
@a b I know Lotr is not dark fantasy, I’m just saying that berserk has a top tier story with amazing lore and characters
Yeah, berserk is the King of dark fantasy no doubt.
ASOIAF doesn't exists
@@Yaboysmoke22 LOTR is pretty dark at times. Not as dark as berserk, but there's some depressing shit in a lot of the books. Like in the silmarillion, a character is tortured by orcs and then killed in front of their brother. Pretty brutal, still not as dark as berserk. (TBH I like LOTR more than berserk. Please don't hurt me.)
lotr ain't dark fantasy though, it's high fantasy
Just started watching and wow, Masked Man has gotten better at creating videos. This is what will make him THE manga guy on UA-cam. His thoughts are better structured and developed. Loving it.
Read Usagi Yojimbo.
He’s great but Mr. Morj is the goat. Although the material Masked man covers is better in virtue of its diversity and seinen emphasis
No better Berserk UA-cam to watch than the one and only 100% facts spitter, the king of and anime and manga ‘The Masked Man’

@@Etticos. couldn't agree more bro. It's absolutely my favorite
@arda cagrici Any book recommendations that are better than Berserk? I need to read more books. Books overall are better than manga.
@@am2938 If you were looking for an manga to read, I would recommend the original GOAT manga Hinotori.
I started reading Berserk and I'm actually mad at how incredible it is. Cuz it's just ruined everything else for me by comparison.

@Neighborhood Snipa i really dont get it why one piece is so hyped. i always looked at it as a story for children, no offence by the way. just stating how i felt
@Neighborhood Snipa no i liked one piece comedy. it was good and made me laugh. but if you are going to write in long paragraphs, i am not interested, no offence. it would be a waste of time for both of us. but i would like to hear your thoughts!
@Neighborhood Snipa yeah i agree to the point that the plot is very creative. but i felt like the story or characters werent very deep. but also side characters are respected very much and also there isnt much of waste of a character. i like that aspect of it. but still when i see people calling it the greatest manga of all time, i just dont get it. it is just a fun anime right? the characters are also one dimensional, for sure. you know what actually triggers me? when people say luffy is better than eren, or sometimes even guts! i know it is just an opinion, but really how? but still I respect it, one of the best shonen mangas, i agree. thnx for sharing. peace!
@Neighborhood Snipa true words, true
7 years since i first read berserk and im yet to see anything that comes close to it.
you kept talking about berserk so i finally started it. and oh man, I scrolled through 2 chapters since last night and I have no idea whats going on but the art, THE ART. everything is so pretty I don't think I can take it.
Everytime I see a 30 minute + video of Berserk on the internet, my heart is filled with joy.
RIP Miura. Thank you.
Gonna go ahead and like this video based on the title alone. 10/10
It introduced all the crazy interdimensional shit
also one of my favorite aspects of Berserk is the action. It's precise and fluid AND Guts' damage and being fatigued from a previous fight comes into play well. An injury from a wound that happened in passing mid fight , that type ot stuff
Never have I clicked so fast
You have a dex build in ds3?? Hmm 🤔.
BRUHHHHHH SAMEEE

I've never read Berserk. Manga is hard to read for me. But i have read a few manga. (aot, 200 chapters of one piece) i've heard good things about it so i will pick up Berserk after i finish The Promised Neverland.
What do you think about it?
How was your experience
I would love them to make a good canonical anime of berserk!
Literally they need to just stay true to the manga (maybe, possibly skip the black swordsman arc)
R.I.P. Kentaro Miura
Berserk is similar to Conan* you meant .
In fact the first scene of Berserk is taken from Conan’ first movie.
just finished golden age it’s amazing its so addicting

Struggling is what makes powerful friendships meaningful.
When we are at our darkest the friends who's lives we've changed are always there for us.
Berserk is one of the perfect seinen manga to jump in, in a hardcore way ofc.
I just finished it and its definitely the Greatest story I've ever read... but not my favorite because its so fk up sometimes
Guts has inspired every character he comes across even the villains.
I know now boy OMG

@@tricko8000 I’m done now by the way and holy shit. I got better character development than Naruto from when I said that to what I know now lol. It’s amazing that last chapter… I hope it continues

One of the different plot structures can exist. There are objective criteria but it depends on what type of story you're trying to tell. But yeah great video

"No objective criteria my as-" That made me laugh, great video!
Before i read bersrrk all i heard was how much the seriea fell off aftwr the golden age arc, i seriously cant comprehend how people come to that conclusion.... imo it only gets better as it goes
Same, actually my favorite part of the story are the last 30 chapters or so
Imo, it didn’t fall off. The world building only got better and better after the Golden Age Arc, but you can’t deny that Guts, Casca, and Griffith were at the peak of their characterization in the Golden Age.
Berserk is fucking GOATED!
I got work in the morning but when Masked posts I watch I’m a simple man

yo mask man I started reading berserk and I love it
you should do a thematic breakdown of Berserk. Talking about the arguments and topics it covers
So, Berserk, Monsters and One Piece are my favorites Manga from years and years. I love how Guts and Johann are writing. I discover your channel but sure to devour all the contain 😉
It IS the greatest of all time
I think you hit pretty much every mark as why Berserk is my #1 manga of all time.
I Humbly Concur with this Video Berserk is The Greatest Manga of all Time and i had the privilege of reading all of it.
Question. If I didn't like the evangelion anime should I give a chance to its manga?

Have you read Miura interviews? They are all very enlightening, and each of them clearly shows that Miura truly love his craft with all of his passion. You could get glimpses what really make Berserk into what it is now, and one conclusion that really stuck with me is how Berserk never went into so called "transition/softening".
I just got into this series, and mannn.

Wonderful video bro. This must have taken a long time to make! Thank you for all the work you put into making this.
I needed this
I'm of the impression that the only way to do a Berserk anime right is to have someone on staff with a good concept of color and it's use. When I'm forced to explain this I usually use Frank Miller's "Sin City" as an example. Berserk is drawn in and overwhelming amount of black and white to emphasize (I believe) the multifaceted contrasts throughout. I think it should go as follows:
- Golden age arc (starting in full pastels and muted tones and growing into scenes more vibrant colors as he accepts his place in The Band. This captures Guts' outlook that he was only living to get up the next day, and has a pessimistic view of the world around him, but is given a "light" (color) by Griffith and The Band of the Falcon)
- The Eclipse (The breaking point. When all color (hope) is drained, and Guts is forced to see the world in just that: Black and White)
- The Black Swordsman (The only color acceptable to me here is red for blood, and silver/blue for tears and Pick (as a source of comedy and "hope" in of himself, he should always have color))
- Conviction Arc (I believe that in this, depending on the perspective (i.e. Farniese, Serpico ect...) There should be color added to the iris of particular characters at key moments)
- Falcon of the Millennium Empire Arc (As guts slowly assembles his possy, and they in turn get their magic items and grow together as a team (ultimately making him forget his vengeance) I would slowly reintroduce color. The moments of respite, a smile, or other such scenes as a way to signify him coming back into his full humanity)
I think the true reason that there hasn't been a good Berserk adaptation is the underutilization of Miura's own lack of color
