I would like to add that you can separate combat systems into 3 categories; creativity, power and strategy based systems.... also world trigger has a great systems 👍
@@Joanbueller007 most good series do...but im talking about what the series combat is centered around...Hunter x hunter has a bunch of strategy but I would say it's based on creativity
8:44 I disagree with you on this. Naruto has never established how much chakra someone has or how much chakra different jutsus consume. In fact, characters only run out of chakra when it's a plot convenience to make the situation more dangerous.
I disagree with you there. The measure of a charcater's chakra has always been pretty consistent in terms of its portrayal. It does not need a definite number for you to be able to clearly tell who has more chakra than who, which can be shown through statements, and feats, which is what they normally do.
Especially at the war arc, it was said that Kakashi couldn't use much chakra for having the Sharingan active all the time, in the war they completely ignored that
At Naruto gave everyone on his side extra Chakra to buff them because they were out of Chakra. Kakashi was fighting close to Naruto so yeah him and Guy recieved more Chakra than everyone else. Boruto is where Chakra has no meaning the kids can spam Jutsu with no limits while Sasuke is always out of Chakra and everyone from previous generation have forgotten how to fight.
@@diogenesnascimento6433 back when chidori was introduced, Kakashi said it could only be used twice before his chakra became empty. And three times if someone wants to be borderline dead.

Jojo's power scaling is fair. It's literally based on your spiritual desire or RNG. Like for example abbacchio! Mood blues is the embodiment of his will to reveal the truth , since he wanted nothing more when being a policeman .
It’s also deeply personal and serves as a reflection of the character’s ambitions, regrets, dreams and fears. Moody Blues is about replaying past events, comparable to obsessive thinking and rumination. Abacchio lives with the guilt of his partner’s death hanging over his head, it’s very fitting that this is his power. The power of Stands, much like Nen, can tell us a lot about the character’s personality
Except some Stands completely shit on others. There's no way in hell Hermit Purple is defeating King Crimson or Made in Heaven. EDIT: shit. I didn’t know RNG meant “random number generator”. Lmao. My bad
The reason why haki is a good assistant system is because ANYONE can awaken it, not “a handful”. That gives anyone a chance to stand against devil fruits toe-to-toe.
It helps too that each haki is awakened differently Conqueror’s Is Birth Armament Is Intensive Training Observation Is Via Intense Battle moments All need to be trained and mastered in their own different and unique ways
I agree, most good series has two power systems. One that the 1% has and is often due to luck, bloodline etc (devil fruits, kekkei genkai, cursed technique, Stands). These powers strength can be justified due to the rarity of them. And then the powers which 100% can learn (Haki, Chakra, Cursed energy, Hamon), comparativly this power must be trained, but can eclipse the 1% system with hard work. There are of couse exceptions. Good exception: Hunter x Hunter, where everyone CAN learn nen (100% power system), but only the 1% get really good at it. HxH doesnt need a secondary power system. Bad exception: My Hero Academia, A power system using the basis of the 1% system where the quirk you get is dependant on luck/at birth but is accesible to (almost) everyone as a 100% system. MHA in my opinion desperatly needs a secondary power system so people not born with a good quirk can still be strong. For example, martial arts or technology. But it seems that wont happen, so imo MHAs power system is pretty bad.
@@FeelixW MHA is supposed to have a secondary power system. It’s called Charles Atlas Superpower. It means a character can train to gain Superman levels of strength and speed. The problem with MHA hardly anyone takes advantage of it. Endeavor’s power is fire and only fire. The strength and toughness he shows is all hard work. Stain’s quirk is just licking blood. It doesn’t affect his speed yet apparently he’s faster than quirks that grant super speed.
This is EXACTLY what I needed-one of my biggest bugbears is balancing Magic and Psychic power to avoid redundancy, and working with the various types of magic power.
Psychic powers are usually tied to physics laws, as they developed in science fiction A common differentiation is that psychic powers can use, empower, negate, or invert cause and effect in a specific physic law, while magic can break those laws E.G. Psychic: accelerate time to ripen a fruit Magic: inject vitality on the fruit to ripen it Psychic: see the future by calculating probability Magic: see the future by prophecy Psychic: move an object by injecting kinetic energy on it Magic move an object by making an invisible hand to grab it
have any of y'all ever heard about the the toaru series? it's about a secret giant magic society (filled with magicians, sorcerers, witches and even some gods), entering in conflict with a scientific city (and their espers and scientists), the anime adaptation is kinda trash after season one, the spin-offs are a little better but they only approach the science side. I would recommend trying to give the light novel a chance
@@lavellelee5734 maybe a few like martial arts (the crazy cultivation chinese novel types/db), magic, science (psychic) and so on so forth. I mean just look at it from here we got the supernatural path where you got those holy/light, dark/death, life or creation manipulation etc. Maybe even supernatural creatures/beasts. We got the tech (sci fi and all that) and biological engineering or my fav changing the biochemistry (maybe a clever drug or something like the nzt). In some areas u got cyborg (bloodshot) and non organic (robotic/virtual world). A lot of stuff to it and maybe we'll create other systems outside of these (but most likely not).
What I like about jojo's system is that the reader is given knowledge of what a character's stand can do and what it's boundaries are so when a character fights an enemy it's exciting to see what they will do with their stand to overcome the obstacle. A great example of this is Josuke vs Yuya
Some times the power is too complicated and we are given to much information on how it works and it just kills the action (dragons dream) or not enough and are left to wonder what the fuck it can actually do (golden experience/ger)
@@jinglejangle1533 I think it’s just Araki’s weird portrayals of powers. I find most Stands’ abilities simple: it does one thing, has a specific activation clause and several limits, like Gold Experience whose abilities require directly touching stuffs. But Araki loves his expositions.
Myh biggest pet peeve is when shounen has their strongest characters on-screen and present at all times. they always elevate the power level randomly, instead of establishing them early on in the series like HxH, One Piece, and JJK
Yeah I clearly remember when Meruem was established early on in the series instead of coming out of a womb in the last arc being stronger than 99 percent of Hunter without any training
Haki took over 10 years to be included into OP power system so how is OP not doing just that especially with characters like big mom and kaido which are literally DBZ level villains if not stronger
@@churchhide haki was forshadowed for years before its "proper" introduction, the level of power that big mom and kaido have was established to be possible through people that are in a similar level in power like mihalk, whitebeard and the admirals (they are not as powerfull as dbz villans they can literally destroy planets you are exagerating)
The most important aspect of this is probably the limitations. I find stories more hard hitting when the characters are legitimately vulnerable and you know they can't just get out of devastating situations with some sudden power up or surprise new technics seemingly coming out of nowhere.
Good rule of thumb: The more the reader knows of the power and it’s limitation: the more you can use powers to solve problems. The opposite is also true. If your viewers don’t know the limits of a power: any problem solved with it will feel cheap.
I know Demon Slayer is bad about flashbacks but it's explained early on with it being your body trying to find a way to save itself (Tanjiro v Rui, Muichiro v Gyokko) but it's Breathing system is fairly balanced. In the end, they're still able to barely keep up with their enemies. BDAs are broken on the other hand
@@funnyV1890 That's why it's bs. A person suddenly gains power for absolutely no reason other than being stabbed by some arrow. I really don't like stories that lacked logic.
4:11 bruh this point with demon slayer is what a lot of people seem to misunderstand and I'm glad you didn't fall into this pit. the demon slayers don't actually control/make elements like producing water/generating lighting. they are just fighting in a way that sort of mimics said element and the elements showing up are just for artistic/visual representation. it's just for flair

@@D_Owo the thing is that we were already told what the ceiling was (For example Kakashi was supposed to be one of the most powerful jounin, and the hokage battle at the end of the chuunin tournament arc) but the author goes “well actually I lied to you” and gives everyone a dbz amp from nothing. It makes no sense considering how kakashi has been training his entire adult life, and yet a couple years from the zabuza arc to the war arc are enough for his chakra supply and power to grow exponentially
@@D_Owo no, that's what's called too much power creeping. Shippuden goes from 0 to 100 in no time when it comes to the power creeping. In one arc they're fighting with strategies and managing chakra and in the next they're throwing out atomic bombs like it's candy.
Honestly, Hunter x Hunter was my favorite in sense of the power system, it was cool seeing the training Gon and Killua went through to achieve nen, and I'm glad they didn't have the power instantly at the start of the anime/manga, and they had to learn it. What hxh did amazingly was the character interactions, how most of the characters we see at the start go out in their seperate ways, and we see them again later on, and I liked the interactions with Gon and Hisoka, how he let Gon go and get stronger so he could fight him later on, while he was getting stronger as well, and the power scaling is well done, yeah it easily has the best power system I know of in anime
What is particularly impressive is that Gon and Killua are extremely talented and strong, but even with intensive training they are still not ready to be in HxH world. Just shows how high the ceiling is and how dangerous it is to be there, as even MC is not even close to being the strongest, unlike some series.
I like overpowered characters as long as they are well written and given justifiable reasoning. For example, Saitama, Gojo, Gilgamesh, Kenpachi, Madara, Sung Jinwoo. I think overpoweredness loses its charm when its reasoning is "power of the main character, or moving plot forward"
Very true!! Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts! I feel like I always see the "power of the main character" problem in isekai stories. Like the actual plot becomes irrelevant and it becomes a braindead slice of life harem usually. If that's what they wanted to write they didn't need to set it in fantasy world with powers LOL
Ya, and my god when you actually see a truly overpowered character die, that shit just hits so much harder than anything else. It goes against everything your expect and just has such a stronger impact. "Unless they do it terribly, like in Madara's case or Fear in SoulEater.... SoulEater is not as well known but let me tell you, that is without a doubt the most dissapointing OP character to Death you'll ever experience." @@foxiepix5164
For some reason I am fine with the fact Sung Jinwoo is strong as hell even though he is really not that different than other manhwa main characters who are more or less broken Something about Solo Leveling feels acceptable to me, maybe the fact it actually has an ending? Maybe the fact they don't spend 100 chapters talking about a whole load of the most boring arcs that don't really do anything? Or maybe the pacing? I think it may be all of it, specially the pacing, manhwas these days around are boring as hell, they introduce the mc and his overpowered ability, then they start something about family lines or some whole insanely boring nonsense rather than showing more cool action
This one continues to feel like a chicken and the egg situation to me.... Are Isekai flooded with dumb OP protagonist, or are seasonal anime just flooded with so many isekais that it just becomes a lot. Because I think a lot of Isekai MCs are actually pretty well-made and even justified in power or it works for their world... equally though, I think there's just such an abundance of isekai that it's very easy to pick out many generic craps. Idk if it's the different though to let's say the Shōnen era of the 2010s where every Shounen was more or less the same too. I like the Naruto power system tbh, it’s prob my favourite. I know it’s kinda generic but I like how if you work enough you can become very strong and I like the different bloodline abilities. But there are some problems with it as you said
My favorite power systems are jojo stands and jujutsu (from jujutsu kaisen). Stands are a very cool concept, where the stand is as strong as users mentality and will. Jujutsu is also very cool with neat things like domain expansions and random crits (black flashes)
Isn’t the Jjk power system dependent on inherent chance tho? Like gojo said it’s 80% inherent. Only leaving a small % for personal growth. And unlike hxh contracts one can not do the same with heavenly restrictions as you are born with them.
@@esseymicheal8541 you can make contracts with cursed energy and you can still become extremely strong even without a special bloodline as stated and shown by Sukuna
Jujutsu Kaisens power system is my absolute favourite. The idea of domain expansions, barriers, simple domains, reversed cursed energy and reverse techniques!?? I love it!!! I also love how to become a strong sorcerer, one must have a open mindset, capable of change and adaptability. However, the learning curve of Jujutsu Sorcerers also relies on being able to take risk and not be afraid to put yourself in deathly situations. I absolutely love the idea of a power system that relies on the users mentality. However, we also see that some of the strongest sorcerers are also selfish like what Ryuk was talking about to Yuta after their fight. Ones own potential is brung out by their mindset, mentality, selfishness or/and willingness to take risk. That's how you bring out your potential as a jujutsu sorcerer. However, when it comes to actually executing your power in a battle, "the skill of a sorcerer can be judged based on their ability to use prerequisites like hand signs or incantations in order to fully activate their technique"
Power systems in anime/manga are always interesting to learn about, I used to watch anime so I could get tips on how to apply how their power systems worked to my own (I’m not writing a Shounen series anymore so…R.I.P., but I still liked them regardless). My favorite power system is from Hunter x Hunter, it’s a really well thought out and (kinda) complicated power system imo.
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a comment and share your thoughts! I hope you were able to enjoy the video! Best of luck with your current project!!
if it is good, explain to me how luffy won against mochi after losing 5 times to him. it is good on the surface, everthing else made up. akainu and aokiji fight for days, others settle it in minutes...hu
A good example too is Agni from Fire punch. (Not shonen tho) His main power is Regeneration, seems generic and quite boring but Tatsuki Fujimoto spiced it up by adding inextinguishable flame that has been inflicted to Agni. He should've burned to death but because of his recovery speed, he was able to not die and utilize his flaming body to burn his enemies.
My power system is called Aura and Divinity Aura being the manifestation of obscene human ability meaning physical strength in any aspect or even pushing the spectrum of what a normal human can do. This includes all 5 senses. For example if you base the amount of aura you have in eye sight and leg muscles you can either see further or see on a different wavelength (depending on the amount of aura or control of it) and you’d be able to run faster or jump higher etc again depending on the amount or control of aura. Fully body aura exists which means you can up your physical strength completely but the best use of aura is Mastered aura which includes the 5 senses as well as full body aura so you become a being of immense physical prowess and physical knowledge. Divinity is the powers that are borrowed from the gods. Too much divinity can kill a being that isn’t classified as a god or divine being. Demi gods can handle more divinity since it is naturally instilled but the more aura you have the more divinity you can handle. Divinity depends on the god you may be in contract with meaning if your goddess was the ice god khione you’d have some control over ice and other abilities the god may have. Aura and divinity used in tandem and mastery over each could make a human a living catastrophe. Aura breaking: A cursed move leading directly to death. This bolsters every physical aspect (not the 5 senses tho) to the max in exchange for the burning of the soul. Usually used as a last resort for those making a last stand. This is all for my manga The Advent Of Thunder. If you have any questions about the story or power system please contact me on instgram dawn_platinum_
Wow, this was really helpful! I'm currently working on writing my own manga called Arizona, and this really helped me with the power system: Psychic Energy. Basically, before the events of the story, an organization called the Marble Foundation experimented on young human children in an attempt to create a youth with the power to restore life to the dying Earth. This results in characters with psychic powers. All people who can harness Psychic Energy have access to basic powers like limited telekinesis and mind reading, which can be trained to become more powerful and gain more powers, like inducing hallucinations or telepathy. However, characters can also gain a new psychic power that manifests through a character's Awakening, which occurs when a character experiences immense mental trauma, the kind that would break most people, and is able to regain composure. These powers can manifest as anything from conjuring fire to duplicating objects. However, as psychic powers are tied to the character's mind, it also relies heavily on emotional strength and one's ability to remain calm under pressure. A character's Psychic Energy actually gets weaker the more stressed or insecure a character becomes. I actually took inspiration from Stands in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure when building this. The main characters don't necessarily get stronger throughout the series, as every battle relies on finding creative uses for one's powers and exploiting weaknesses. For example, Phoenix Arizona (the main character) may use his fire powers to create an aura of blistering heat to exhaust an opponent until they collapse, or a character may use telekinesis to set up a trap to distract an opponent, only for them to attack in some completely different and unexpected way! I understand that this power system is by no means perfect, and I am open to suggestions. Either way, I hope that you enjoy seeing what can be done with Psychic Energy when I finally release Arizona!

MHA not being balanced is a part of its story, literally in the first page of the manga you see "not all men are created equal". It's COMPLETELY intentional and makes the story make sense in multiple ways.

The Law of Ueki if a fairly underrated anime and manga that has a very good power system - every combatant in it has the power to turn "something" into "something" - for example, turning trash into trees, towels into iron, discs into sawblades, etc, which allows for many fun and interesting fights because of the genius simplicity of the rules, while also giving birth to some very interesting and fun powers - the power to turn stupid puns into reality, the power to turn models into real objects, the power to turn 1 second into 10 seconds, etc. Its a quite short anime and manga series but its worth going through - especially the anime, since it has some godly animation - even though its quite old, its still gold. Heh.
I always loved Bleach's variety of not only abilities, but the power sources themselves. While all powers stem from spirtual power, each race uses it differently, making it so each race has their own unique magic system. Soul Reapers focus on soul cultivation to develop their various abilities, chief among them being their Kido spells and Zanpakuto. Hollows essentially focus on body cultivation by eating souls to literally evolve and Quincies focus on energy cultivation so to better absorb and manipulate the spirit particles (reishi) in the air around them. Then you have hybrids races like Fullbringers, Arrancar and Vizards who combine different aspects of the 3 races in their own ways. It's so complex yet interwoven that it forms this fascinating and beautiful tapestry of a magic system.
@@geschnitztekiste4111 I think he means a cap for how powerful characters can get In some anime/manga it’s established early how powerful someone can ultimately get but in DB they just keep introducing new characters that are always stronger than the last even if the last characters were already supposed to be the strongest
I would add that you should always try to balance physical prowess and more supernatural powers that encourage out of the box thinking. Let’s take Part 5 of JoJo for example. Giorno’s Gold Experience is a very VERY versatile power but is constantly shown as getting beat when in straight up 1v1 fist fights which forces Giorno to use Gold Experience in creative ways. This parallels the main villain who (slight spoilers btw) has an extremely physically powerful stand with an ability that is strong but extremely simple which we can see as a genuine downside since he gets outsmarted fairly often but he remains as a threat because we see just how strong his stand can be when his opponent fails to strategize effectively or when their strategies just can’t outweigh the sheer amount of force his stand can put out
I immediately scrolled away from this comment as soon as you said "let's take part 5 of Jojo for example." There was no point of writing a long comment to summarize a part of the story and the characters powers.

I also wanted to add that One Piece introduces a couple of martial arts that can be used in conjunction with Devil Fruits and Haki, such as: Rokushiki, Fishman Karate, Hasshoken, and all the different sword styles. Martial arts add a lot to both realism and interest, because it makes a lot of sense that in a world where people have super powers, they'd come up with fighting styles to either compensate or enhance their power.

I think what makes nen the truly great power system is the concept of the specialist because it is basically the biggest “have your cake and eat it too”. For those who don’t know nen abilities are divided into 6 distinct types or what they can do/use it for and specialist boils down to any power that doesn’t fit into the other groups. It basically means the author has perfectly found a way to bring in a power that doesn’t align with the power systems rules without it feeling like a cheat or make no sense by giving an internal reason for it. It is honestly one of the smartest choices for a power systems because then they can create any cool or unique power that pops into their head without it breaking the in universe rules
Yeah, Specialization makes room for some of the most memorable abilities in the whole series. But you know the complexity creep is real when the best fight in the series has flow charts XD
Another thing I would like to add is that power systems should be related to the themes or plot of the story. Jojo does this very well, like when Koichi gets more acts as the story progresses. Another anime that does this well is Black Clover. The utilization of grimoires allows for a unique magic system, in which training does not effect how much spells you get, only how good they are. New spells are gained by character development. For example, when Gauche starts caring for others. He uses mirror magic, and he could teleport using mirrors, shoot beams of light using mirrors, and clone himself. Once he realized that he needs to work with others, he gains a new spell that is the ability to clone other people. Power systems may be a part of the story, but if they reflect the themes of the story, that makes it even better.
there is a hidden power system explored in OPM that every living being has a limit-cap Saitama is an example of breaking his limiter. And theres another character who does the same but thats not animated yet.
This is a very helpful video, not planning to write any Manga. But the story I am currently brainstorming "Break of Dawn" (the title is still loose) definitely plays on Shonen themes. The general idea being that after centuries of constant warfare with vampires fairies have been dwindled down from a massive 500,000 to approximately only 2,000. In this series farries are not distinguishable from humans in any obvious way, but generally are more athletic, intellectual, and far better off.. The main conflict is that Vampires (still sticking to the original vampire archetype) want to collect enough faerie(intentionally spelled wrong)blood in order gain complete immunity from the sun. The more pure the fairie blood the better. I am still working on in what manner the blood is then utilized to give all vampires complete immunity. Another thing worthy of note I that even an ounce of fairie blood can be drank to last up to a complete 3 hours in sunlight , however a vampire can only take so much or the pure magical power would simply be too much. Essentially acting as an over dose. The power scaling comes in with the fairies themselves. Their power is drawn from the innate magic Within themselves, this being only present in faeries, this power not yet known where it originated(aka in working on that part). This allows them to manipulate their own energies similar to the ki system in dragon ball. As well as certain faerie families having specialized ways in which this power is used.
To be fair, sticking stuff together is not as useless as it sounds and it is merely because the story is about Deku that Mineta’s power is not explored more. He can chuck a lot of those balls
@@lunafreed Mineta is actually quite powerful, his pop offs seem to be indestructible, can fuse two objects together, and he is incredibly intelligent, giving him the cleverness to use his ability effectively. (2nd in class without studying)
I love Gash Bell's spell system they have two systems: elements, and spell type: spells that ends with -ga: beam shaped and has piercing properties spells that start with Ganzu: rapid small projectiles spells that start with Shirudo: shield spell spells that end with -ruku: self-buff spell every demon has their own element, in the case of the protagonist, lightning all his versions of the spell type have to do with lightning, with his "ruku" (self buff) letting him move as fast as lightning everyone's element is different, but sometimes they share spell structure, and even with said similarities, the spell casting effects can end up VERY different example: Gash's Ganzu spell gives him six separate barrels that shoots fat lightning orbs Wonrei, a demon whose power is melee combat, his Ganzu spell is making his fists punch so rapidly it can fire off waves from each blow another demon's ganzu spell is shooting rapidly from one source point Demons dont always learn all the spell types and then some demons are better at some than others, and some LIVE by specifically only one spell type too example: Ted only has "-ruku" spells, that means he only has self-buff spells, but he has like 5 versions the fun part of the manga is to find out how many spell types are the SAME yet how different and unique they are to to their OWN ELEMENTS.
Hearing this is just what I needed, I don’t draw cause I suck but I like to write about my characters but never gave them a real story, just tying them together by chance for example my minor character only gets talked about cause I needed a backstory for one of my main characters
I wish you touched on Magical Index’s system, I feel like that system has a lot to learn from especially since it juggles all of the topics in this video really well.
I've followed whytmanga for a long time, and I appreciate another Saturday comic artist. Your content is very succinct, and while some points when a little off track, your editing keeps the video engaging. Very good stuff.
With Diversity in Power, I think of Fire Force. A series where all the powers are based off of fire in some way, but each character does it in a different way making it interesting.
The only problem that i have with Nen is that put the bar so freaking high ahahah, you can write a book about nen and if togashi brings antoher chapter, you need to write another book, is just that good and complex, it gives so much potential and uniqueness, bcs you create your own powers, and are reflections of the personality and history of every character, some are more in depth but you get the point, really good video btw, like :)
Thank you for taking the time to share! I definitely need to check Toriko out! I only read the first chapter MANY years ago, but looks like it's time to catch up!
@OocSNKZ It’s really simple but effective. It’s essentially like Dragon Ball Z and power levels but if they actually continued using that concept to measure power. In Toriko they have “Capture Levels” for ingredients or beasts. And depending on how difficult it is to attain the ingredients or capture the beasts the higher their capture levels. You might think that the power scaling system so far is just really basic but the manga really shows you how to tell apart low capture level beasts from those who higher capture levels. For example low capture level beasts would be something like large snakes who shoot acids with a capture level around 20-25 or so. But when we move up the scale to a beast with a capture level that’s much higher like 6,000-7,000 they are capable of some crazy ass shit. For example there was one beast so powerful that he was able to perfectly cut a giant mountain and throw it across the ocean and make it skip until it’s reduced to a mere pebble. But yea hope that helps.
I feel like a good power system would be the ideas of jojo and one piece where you can have a ability that not many people can get and are extremely weird but can be useful while there can be a haki type power that can let characters be able to be equal to the main power system
The elemental powers might not be real, but “It’s not magic they just breathe real good” starts to fall apart when human characters develop things like X-ray vision, turning a blade red by squeezing real hard, and manifesting spontaneous tattoos that burn lifespan for power up
That is true! When I made that point I was mostly referring to the elemental part, like I don't believe water is actually appearing The Demons DO have powers that appear in the physical world though, same with the crests and sword color like you said
One interesting note is that because of the nature for OP characters, they can actually work as villains. If your hero is super powerful and never sees the consequences, it can become frustrating and boring. If your villain is this way however, it can serve to fuel the audience's rage towards them.
That was informative! I've never really broken down power systems this way. I always understand them but breaking them down into fundamentals makes it easier to create one.
HUGE shoutouts to this video, watching this inspired me to re-vamp the power system in my story and it’s 100% better for it. Thank you for making it. Very well done and I love the use of other shows as examples.
Power system idea: if you conquer your greatest fear conpletly you gain a power relted to the fear. The limts and ablitys come simply from how you interpret the ablity and its limts
Woah that sounds awesome! It’s kinda similar to my power system idea, although rather from fear, it’s related to stress. And their ability is in relation to a moment in their life that caused them to feel the greatest amount of stress in their life (e.g. heartbreak/relative dying/having a panic attack etc…). The conditions and limits are also formed from how they interpret their stress too. I like the sound of your idea though, very simple and effective!
My power system was heavily influenced by chakra from naruto, but instead of the power system having elements, the elemental type is one of the 6 types of the power system (im currently calling it mana because its also a term for life energy like chakra, ki and chi)
I made a power system were when a person has a specific attachment or emotional bond with an object they gain an ability related to that bond. Although there are also some people who gained abilities from bonds with other things like a mind control ability born from a fascination with factory’s that controls anyone who thinks the user can make their life better, or a powerful reality warping ability born from the user isolation with their thoughts that lets the user control reality for a certain time, but after they finish everything they made disappears but the effect remains(ex. They fire a missile and blow up a house, the missile disappears but the house is dust)
@@elmendelasarten8365 heres one for free idioms are power such as Its raining cats and dogs- summoms cats or dogs Im feeling under the weather- can manipulate the weather on the ground Curiousity killed the cat- can alter peoples memories and can turn into a partial cat.
My all time favorite power system in any series is in One Piece. You have devil fruits which can range from being pretty useless (axolotl fruit) to being op. Even then, creativity plays a huge part in the power. Katakuri for example has a pretty mediocre fruit, turning into a rice cake, but his creativity and his Haki make it monstrous. Then you got haki. Haki is accessible to literally anyone but mastering them and making them stronger takes a lot of training and each haki has different ways to train and improve them.
Gintama has the best power system, which is not having one at all XD. Jokes aside Gintama is a good example of making battles interesting without a power system, but that comes from all the setting that is done before the battle and the choreography. A video about battle choreography in manga and comic would be pretty interesting!
One thing I want to say is that OPM deserves a special mention since its powers are very diverse there is no system for particular powers but a threat level to measure them all. Same for MHA but it basically just says you have superpowers since you are born. Like no radiation no special serum no experimentation you were just born with it.
@@asandax6 Honestly the Power System is pretty much just genetic enhancements, pure training, machinery, pure desire turning into a monster, alien biology, natural born powers and being given powers by "God". So it's very comic book like since there is no define power system and are just powers.
@@eduardopantoja9115 I think that OPM is better that way because having different powers and explanations along with a variety of colourful characters is much better than typical shounen or seinen storylines where there are last minute power ups. But it's not completely unrelated as the disaster levels are an amazing standard to measure powers.
the power system in Mha turned to shit when Deku got multiple quirks. At first, the idea of the Younger generation's quirks being much stronger and more complex than the Older generation was so unique I loved it. But then you have Deku who is just a hero in TRAINING s beating up pro villains like Overhaul, Muscular, Stain, etc. Deku basically beat up villains without much effort and even if his arms gets torned up, the recovery girl easily heals it without any consequences. The Power System in Mha is shit and that is based on objective facts.
@@jameschristopher2540 yeah, JoJo's is very hard to get into, part 1 was a product of it's time, but trust me when i say that part 2 is way better, and part 3... Didn't age that well, mainly the first half, but there are some really great fights there as well. Part 4 to me is when Araki found a formula that truly works and later parts built on that further. Part 6 is the end of the original continuity and an actually really deep look back at how much happened since part 1, and part 7 is araki having a blank slate in which he can paint on a blank canvas using all of the skills he acquired over the years and the result is nothing ahort of a work of art. The manga art, the themes, the stands, the journey the characters go through and seeing how Araki visits ideas from the old world in a completely new way is just... *Chef's kiss

Scissor seven has a really interesting power system. It kinda has multiple power systems varying between regular people with powers, assassins with much stronger powers, and the weird tech people why use technology to enhance themselves. I love that when you talk about limitations, you show kakashi fighting in the 3rd ninja war arc, the guy was supposed to faint after using a 2 or 3 kamuis, but goes for over 10 and endlessly shoots lightning jutsus like it's nohing.
@@stonalisa3729 it did, mostly before the war arc, when kakashi used kamui for the first time againt deidara, he used it 2 or 3 time and was exhausted, and even earlier in the manga, he said to Sasuke that he could only use raikiri 4 times a day or something. Even when taking training into account he used more of both meaning his chakra reserve don't make any sense, honestly considering how poorly the war arc was made it's not surprising.
@@kingol4801 No shit, sherlock. You can have anime with cool monumental fights and still have it make sense, and it's the author's job to make it make sense, for example not making the war arc take half of fucking shippuden.
@@ignited8119 I don't think you've watched a lot of (non-mainstream) anime. Nen is complex for the way it works (different types do different things and you can use them in different ways) but the effects it produces are pretty standards. Use your nen --> Produce a standard power OR Use your nen with restrictions --> Produce a standard power boosted up in a directly proportional way to the limit you applied. But, for example, if you produce electricity with nen, it remains electricity even if boosted up. If you watch some really good power system like A Certain Magical Index, electricity isn't just electricity: if you can calculate more variables, you can use that power in a more precise way. You can manipulate electricity? Then you can produce a lightning, manipulate electric field (because it's generated by an electric charge), manipulate magnetic field (because it's generated by an electric field), manipulate every kind of magnetic force (attracting every kind of material), use magnetic field on a electrically charged item to produce a Lorentz Force and then a Railgun, manipulate every electrical signal in an electronic device to hack him or every electrical signal produced by each neuron (synapse) in your own brain to resist mental manipulation. And the fact is that God Speed in Hxh is one of the most complex powers, while Electromaster powers in A Certain Magical Index aren't even so rare. Vector manipulation is a power that can control every single vector quantity in the universe, so every single physical phenomenon and so a power that can work in billions of different variables. Dark Matter can produce a substance that doesn't exist in the universe and can have every kind of feature, also characteristics that don't exist in the universe and can't be studied. HxH is a good power system in mainstream works, but pretty bland if we consider every kind of manga. You can't compare a manga with limited ways to use a power (HxH) to other works where there are infinite variables only limited by your imagination and calculation ability.
Thanks so much for the tips 👍. I have been struggling to come up with a power source and reason for my powers that I am trying to create. This really helps out
Naruto's chakra system was good until 1: inconsistent asspulls (Kakashi, battle on the bridge) and 2: when every antagonist or plot-relevant entity bypassed the system for "strongs sake". I actually still like tbe system- it just has no use anymore because of the writing
Naruto's power system is as consistent as JoJo's until the war arc. Although the explaination was because Naruto was giving out the 9 Tails Chakra like candy to everyone and the enemy was using its own tailed beast Chakra. Now as for Boruto well let's say it's not Naruto.
I’m writing a shonen inspired book series and watching other anime certainly helps get the creative juices flowing. My story is about Druids and my power system involves harnessing nature energy to turn into a human animal hybrid. As a limitation, Druids can only turn into one animal, they are limited by the biome their animal form originates from (Ex: alligator man from swamp.) and without proper training, they can remain in their beast form physically and mentally. I was also thinking about adding sub abilities more advanced can use such as commanding similar animals or elemental augmentation to their beast form abilities, all under the aforementioned limitations. Thoughts?
Maybe it can depend on the animal, for instance a lion can lead a pack when they have demonstrated that they are alpha. Or a bee can call the boys because the user is their queen
@@TheRoomforImprovement I apologize to ask, But i'm curious, If one were to say, Become an ant hybrid, would it be the only one of its kind, or would it team up with other ant-hybrids to form a colony, if the latter is true, then what qualifications would make the queen hybrid? This is all just pure curiosity. Sorry in advance. (Edit: My empty head didn't read the Animal part of the hybrid power system. I apologize.
@@bbqsauce4796 You don’t have to apologize. That’s a good question. I believe it would initially be the only one of it’s kind. But I imagine with enough training, they could find a way to control other ants. Hope this helps.
I know there's still a war going on about whether or not this is an anime or not, but I'm surprised you didn't make Avatar TLA an example. It's my favorite for 3 reasons -1: The philosophy of "Merging different styles, cultures, and ways together makes you stronger" Yes, Aang is the only one who can use all 4 elements, but that doesn't mean you can't take the ways of the 4 elements and incorporate their ways into your one element. This is possible thanks to the fact that all you need is movement to control 1 of the 4 elements. -2: Nonbenders are still capable of kicking ass. They may have a harder time becoming a threat but put in the training and you could wope even some of the better benders. Whether it's through specific training, tactics, or a weapon of choice. Hell, even though they never state it, it's implied that most benders get so complacent with their bending abilities, they won't be much of a threat if their bending is taken away. -3: Powers Scaling: Only the Avatar is capable of the biggest scale attacks. Most benders are pretty tame in terms of scale, and when a fight does come up, it's not (just) about power. While the powers of benders vary, it's never just "The dude who can bend the biggest rock wins", there are factors to this. Skill, Experience, Tactics, Way of Moving, Build, Weapons, Techniques, Smarts. Enough variety for anyone to hop in and try something that might down the strongest dude, and other than bending, none of these are exclusive to anyone. Anyway, TLDR: I find Avatar to have 1 of the best power systems, and I want to do my best to follow its example, alongside One Piece
I like how One Piece is mentioned multiple times here but I agree, it’s power system is tightly regulated. Plus it’s important to note that in one piece, some powers are introduced and already exist in the world without the readers knowing so that when it’s given a better introduction in the future, it doesn’t make it an a** pull. For example, Enel using observation haki which gets properly introduced many arcs later.
I am thinking of trying something new - a battle shounen... Without supernatural powers. Imagine a shounen focused on HEMA / historical fencing taking inspiration from three musketeers. The protagonist is blamed by his community for his father's dishonor, and as such embarks on a quest to restore it, with his mastery of destreza serving as the tool. He will face criminals, other diestro, crazed alchemists and occult conspiracies, but at the end of the day he is always just a man with his rapier.
That sounds a fun read and i hope you go with the idea. Only thing you need to worry is the sword techniques being too grand. Power ups should be simple things like better footwork or learning how to parry a single attack not like a sword that fires laser beams that destroys mountains.
A battle shonen without supernatural powers? Kengan ashura does something similar. The only supernatural power I think is the speeding of blood the protagonist does but even that comes with extreme drawbacks.
I had a small idea for a power system. Nothing too original or elaborated, and I only have a general outer frame for it, but still an idea. Essentially, it's called Ego (placeholder name). It's a power born out of the user's personality, passions, phobias, ideals or trauma, and anyone is able to awaken it in some capacity. It has generally an unawakened form and a fully realized one, depending on the user's state of mind. The unawakened form manifests itself mostly physically and with limited capabilities, counciding with the user still not fully comprehending or accepting the power. Once the user comes to terms with themselves and fully grasps their ability's potential, it awakens and takes a more subdued, ethereal form, with the power growing exponentially but becoming more tiring and psychologically straining to use as a result. It's extremely dependent on the user's psyche, and any heavy psychological change could technically alter the Ego in unpredictable ways. Technically speaking, that's about all I could think of for now. Very rough, but hey, till an idea. But probably the most elaborate part I have in mind is the naming convention, because I LOVE the idea of a power system with a precise naming convention. Every Ego power's name is chosen through the formula [Verb] + [Linker] + [Noun] And so, you get stuff like Morph Your Wave, Dive in Darkness, Shield My Soul, Dance 'til Death, Hitch a Ride, Spin My Head, Shape The Earth, and Watch Your Back. In case you're wondering yes, this idea was actually born as a terrible idea for a Jojo fan series. They were all stands with terrible music references. I changed the entire thing around when s friend of mine made me notice that at this point I could have just done something completely different instead of writing a crappy fanfiction.
Jojo's power system is awesome and unique as long as you don't look at each Stands stats which often doesn't make sense at all, but I'd say it's more of a random gimmick. I do like tho that the power can decrease over time with aging characters.
I love the concept of energy manipulation like Life energy, spiritual energy, natural energy. In that anyone can learn how to utilize by trainingn intensely. It I like to learn more were it's coming from who's was first to teach or use it. In good video 👍👍👍
This is a very helpful guide (apart from the fact that you spoiled the power systems of Dragon Ball, One Piece, Bleach, and Jojo's Bizarre Adventure). I think it may also be worth pointing out how the power system can inform the audience about the characters who use the system. Such as how they use their abilities in various scenarios, how they obtained the power, or even how they feel about it. Like Shoto Todoroki from My Hero Academia, who possesses a power that literally reflects his parentage. Out of spite for his abusive father, he refuses to use or train half of his power (his father's half).
Very good points! Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts! As for the spoiler thing, this is an educational channel. I try to respect spoilers if a series is currently airing or if the manga is way past the anime. I usually give stuff a year after airing before mentioning it in depth At this point, if someone hasn't seen or read Dragonball, One Piece, Bleach, or Jojo it's kind of on them. They've been out and popular for years haha
@@MonitorComics Oh I completely agree. I understand it's not your fault, but mine here. I've been procrastinating on these anime because I recently finished watching Naruto Shippuden, and it's a huge dedication to watch any of these other Shonen giants. And frankly, they're not big spoilers. I've seen a few episodes of One Piece already, so I already knew about Luffy's Gumgum fruit. And revealing a few fundamental rules to a power system to illustrate a point is hardly a spoiler especially because you only revealed one aspect of the world building these series built up. I watched these because I want to try my hand at writing a Manga. I was also thinking of using the game RPG Maker MV on my PS4 to aid with the world building and power system. I don't have any game developing experience, and very little practice with RPG Maker MV, but it will force me to add limits and a progression system. And who knows, it may give my audience (if I earn an audience), a video game adaptation of the manga I write.
@@MonitorComics Thank you for the encouragement. I don't know how I will present the manga. At this time it's just me brainstorming everything. One of the ideas I'm thinking over is an Isekai narrative, where the Protagonist starts playing the game I design only to end up trapped in the game itself, and releasing the game in its base form (what the protagonist was going to play before getting trapped). I understand it's not original but it may give some extra immersion for players. But that's just one possible option.
Nen from HXH is legit the best power system i've ever seen, its so elaborate and it essentially has endless possibilities with the nen types ( specialization basically can do anything)
I was wondering if I can ask you something. For my my power system I wanted it to be something that you can extract from your life force/spiritual energy. ( I don't know if I should call it Aura or Prana. I was gonna go for Mana but then I remembered Ben 10 had the idea first). With this power system you can use it to enhance the user's combat abilities, strength, flight, elements and magic. They can increase their power by training to harness their (life force/spiritual energy) to make their attacks more powerful, learn more powerful attacks that are draining (depending on the user) or even allow them to be more durable in a fight. (if they use more of their energy on defense they will drain themselves). They train mentally and physically to wield this energy but they must have a focus mind because their attacks are linked to their emotions (meaning that if they attack in an emotional state it would either increase or decrease their attacks, like most shounen). Still need to find a name for the energy. What do think and can you help me.
Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment! I think you have some cool ideas! I wouldn't cross out Mana just yet, it isn't owned by Ben 10. Many games and anime and movies have Mana systems. Mana typically has to do with magic powers so anybody could make their own Mana system if they wanted. I think you're on the right path with your power system's drawback being life force extracted. I would try and make some sort of note sheet that keeps track of how much life energy each ability uses so you can stay consistent. Naruto's Chakra system is pretty similar but gets a lot of hate because it's never clear how much chakra is used from each Jutsu and when characters do run out of chakra it's for a plot convenient moment. Other than that though your power system sounds cool! Hope that helps!
@@MonitorComics thx. Yeah I understand. DragonBall Super has a similar problem since their use of ki is also plot convenient like Jiren vs Frieza and Goku. My story may suffer the same thing but I can find ways to make it less convenient than it is, like allow people to use Mana to catch up to super natural beings and let the Super natural beings go use it either as a boost for their power or obtain new techniques
So what did you mean there are Mana and Life Force? And just like what Monitor Comics said, the word and term "Mana" isn't owned by Ben 10, it's largely used in almost fantasy with magic element series but if you insist you can call it Magical Energy, Life Essence, or Soul Essence. They are all basically the same thing. My interpretation of your comment is that the users are able to use magical energy, but there's a greater source called life force to amplify their magic even more in exchange of some of their lifespan. This is common among wuxia novel or cultivation manhua, so you may want to take a peek on their wiki for reference.
It’s so hard coming up with one, like I want to use the source of Energy but then the main powers would be elemental but I want other powers in it ya know, it’s dumb hard to come up with it
That is true! Just take it slow and one step at a time! Maybe use a pre-existing power source as a template to make it easier for yourself right now and then make changes after!
@@MonitorComics yea I’ve decided to use energy and have elemental powers and swords are the main source of weaponry but now I’m coming up with all the characters
these videos are actually helpful, I have a story in mind but I lack talent in story writing, villian making, protagonist and antagonist writing and i dont know that to avoid in making a manga. after watching these videos, i've finally rewritten the entire story and finally come up with the final one, where every plot is connected to the story line and every villian has a back story and not just some dude who spawns and wants to kill the protagonist.
That's awesome to hear! I'm glad these videos could help! Thanks for taking the time to check them out and leaving a comment! Good luck with your story!
Imagine if for power system limitations, you get an actual display of how much power each character has left during each fight. Like how Yu gi Oh shows Life points or an rpg shows MP. This way when characters fight you have an idea of which special techniques cost how many points, you can even try to guess which ability the characters will lose when they have X amount of points left, what they can do to start out fights and how they will be forced to strategize more often when they're in longer fights. It could add alot of depth in the reader's own interactivity though educated guesses, and keep things like Bleach and Naruto's overblown power escalation to a point where their established systems no longer matter/make sense.
That could work well in two ways if its only the user they would have to thing when to save it, but if the opponent could see it all the time a character might try to make their opponent spend all their power then attack them with all of their strength when their opponent cant block the attack with their power drained.
I am writting a manga right now and in my power system they have mana as their power source and in the universe there is a special pencil they draw a 100% on their arm then they can see how much mana they still have left which makes them use magic more strategiclly
I think the Nen System in Hunter x Hunter is a good power system, it depends on the creativity of the user and if he trains the ability, also for getting even more power you can put a condition to the ability, for me thats pretty balanced
I think this is the only the area where I struggle with my stories. They're all in one connected universe, but the powers vary from person to animal or alien. Plus Anthro characters exist at the same time, and everything is inspired by well known heroes. I kind of like MHA's style of the Quirk system, since one action effected future events, so I try to work from there. Thanks so much for giving great tips in here and showing great examples like One Piece and Demon Slayer, cause I think they have some of the best systems!
Im currently writing a story, and have created a power system that I feel works. Magic in my world can be used in two ways: Mana Control, and Wild Magic Mana Control is the most common, and involves using physical Mana Crystals to channel magic into whatever form the Mana Crystal is (Think like Materia from FF7). While useful, this magic is rather limited in use and requires training for use, so some characters can't use it as well as others. You can also only use one or two Mana at a time. The other, Wild Magic, is only usable by a small few who are 'in tune' with Magic as a whole. While more reliable and versatile, it lacks the abilities of Mana Control (being only raw Magic without the elemental or specialized abilities of Mana) and requires even more training to use well. My story revolves around less powerful characters, so I tried to create a system that's more a compliment to physical combat. My main character is magic dependant, so she needs to work around Magic's limits to win fights against far more skilled fighters, as well as relying on her teammates to support her.
After a few months, this system has changed into a more 'Nen'-like system. Every character who uses Magic has a unique ability that they must use smartly in order to succeed. However, every living creature has something called an MP Field, which is a protective field that defends them from magic based on their stamina. So in order to win, it's best to use physical combat to weaken them before beginning to use Magic. Using spells also uses your MP Field, which means that more powerful spells leaves you more vulnerable to enemy magic.
For me, I've somewhat simplified out my personal power system in my Lore that I make from boredom & interest: Across the 8 Universes I have, there are 8 separate categories for power, with each one covering a wide basis. Energy - Manipulating the energy in the world as it is Element - Using a natural building block of the Universe as a tool/weapon Supernatural - Abilities and forms that don't fit the natural world Physical - The control & utilization of the body Mind - The use of mental prowess & power Soul - Using or influencing either your own spirit or anothers Species - The bloodline & race you have Gear - Tools, weapons & any form of equipment Now, I will say, some of this stuff could be grouped together, but I find it easier to group them out and call anything that bridges the gaps a combination or an imitation. As rules within the Universes, people aren't allowed to reach extreme levels of power unless they reach certain goals. If they can't or don't do certain things, then the natural limiter won't allow them to grouch further. For limiters & rulings, I've made it so that anyone can use any ability but not everyone has the same level of ease with them. A person who's born with the category of Elemental will have an easier time manipulating the world around them, But someone who's not born with that category either takes longer to learn it or they must instead imitate it in alternate ways to create the same effect.

@Planet 9X if a power system is what makes naruto bad for you than you completely missed every other aspect lol
I disagree with you there. The measure of a charcater's chakra has always been pretty consistent in terms of its portrayal. It does not need a definite number for you to be able to clearly tell who has more chakra than who, which can be shown through statements, and feats, which is what they normally do.

I'm happy to hear that! Thank you for taking the time to check this video out and leave a comment! I really appreciate it!
Psychic powers are usually tied to physics laws, as they developed in science fiction
A common differentiation is that psychic powers can use, empower, negate, or invert cause and effect in a specific physic law, while magic can break those laws
E.G.
Psychic: accelerate time to ripen a fruit
Magic: inject vitality on the fruit to ripen it
Psychic: see the future by calculating probability
Magic: see the future by prophecy
Psychic: move an object by injecting kinetic energy on it
Magic move an object by making an invisible hand to grab it

What I like about jojo's system is that the reader is given knowledge of what a character's stand can do and what it's boundaries are so when a character fights an enemy it's exciting to see what they will do with their stand to overcome the obstacle. A great example of this is Josuke vs Yuya

Good rule of thumb:
The more the reader knows of the power and it’s limitation: the more you can use powers to solve problems.
The opposite is also true.
If your viewers don’t know the limits of a power: any problem solved with it will feel cheap.

My power system is called
Aura and Divinity
Aura being the manifestation of obscene human ability meaning physical strength in any aspect or even pushing the spectrum of what a normal human can do.

Wow.
Are going to release your Manga in web toon
This is incredible. You have a magnum opus on your hands for sure!!! I will definitely be reading your comic when it releases!!

Hollows essentially focus on body cultivation by eating souls to literally evolve and Quincies focus on energy cultivation so to better absorb and manipulate the spirit particles (reishi) in the air around them.

Great points! Thank you for taking the time to add onto the discussion!
there is a hidden power system explored in OPM that every living being has a limit-cap Saitama is an example of breaking his limiter.
That sounds AWESOME. Thank you for taking the time to share all of that and for checking out this video! I really appreciate it! Best of luck!!

True! Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts!
Yeah, you have insane quirks like what Todoroki has then there's Mineta
To be fair, sticking stuff together is not as useless as it sounds and it is merely because the story is about Deku that Mineta’s power is not explored more. He can chuck a lot of those balls
@@lunafreed Mineta is actually quite powerful, his pop offs seem to be indestructible, can fuse two objects together, and he is incredibly intelligent, giving him the cleverness to use his ability effectively. (2nd in class without studying)
Yea and you end up with a ton of lame and useless powers, and the strong characters have generic powers like speed, strength and fire.
great video! you've got some good point on the power system, i'll definetly think of it all to make a proper balanced system
Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment Treecks! I really appreciate it!!
"Chakra isnt infinite" Jubidara and war arc naruto would like to disagree
LOL
Kaguya and isshiki: agree
I love Gash Bell's spell system
they have two systems: elements, and spell type:
spells that ends with -ga: beam shaped and has piercing properties
spells that start with Ganzu: rapid small projectiles
spells that start with Shirudo: shield spell
spells that end with -ruku: self-buff spell
every demon has their own element, in the case of the protagonist, lightning
all his versions of the spell type have to do with lightning, with his "ruku" (self buff) letting him move as fast as lightning
everyone's element is different, but sometimes they share spell structure, and even with said similarities, the spell casting effects can end up VERY different
example:
Gash's Ganzu spell gives him six separate barrels that shoots fat lightning orbs
Wonrei, a demon whose power is melee combat, his Ganzu spell is making his fists punch so rapidly it can fire off waves from each blow
another demon's ganzu spell is shooting rapidly from one source point
Demons dont always learn all the spell types
and then some demons are better at some than others, and some LIVE by specifically only one spell type too
example:
Ted only has "-ruku" spells, that means he only has self-buff spells, but he has like 5 versions
the fun part of the manga is to find out how many spell types are the SAME
yet how different and unique they are to to their OWN ELEMENTS.
Hearing this is just what I needed, I don’t draw cause I suck but I like to write about my characters but never gave them a real story, just tying them together by chance for example my minor character only gets talked about cause I needed a backstory for one of my main characters
I'm super glad this video could help! Thank you for taking the time to watch and share your thoughts!
I wish you touched on Magical Index’s system, I feel like that system has a lot to learn from especially since it juggles all of the topics in this video really well.
TRUE I love that franchise I am a bit disappointed in myself as well LOL
I personally believe that Toriko had an incredible power scaling system with the Capture Levels
True! That would be cool!
The elemental powers might not be real, but “It’s not magic they just breathe real good” starts to fall apart when human characters develop things like X-ray vision, turning a blade red by squeezing real hard, and manifesting spontaneous tattoos that burn lifespan for power up
That is true! When I made that point I was mostly referring to the elemental part, like I don't believe water is actually appearing
The Demons DO have powers that appear in the physical world though, same with the crests and sword color like you said
One interesting note is that because of the nature for OP characters, they can actually work as villains. If your hero is super powerful and never sees the consequences, it can become frustrating and boring. If your villain is this way however, it can serve to fuel the audience's rage towards them.
Nah. I prefer power fantasies over cheap and poorly done “evil Superman” tropes.
Overlord is a great example of that, for instance.
Jojo's is pretty sciencey with their power system and also keeps it very fictional which is why I like it
Very true! Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
I really appreciate the feedback! Thank you for checking the video out and taking the time to share your thoughts! Best of luck with your story!
That idea is pretty good and I also recommend looking into the psychological concept of The Shadow if you want to expand on it.

I had that idea for a long time. I got the idea from playing the silent Hill series
My power system was heavily influenced by chakra from naruto, but instead of the power system having elements, the elemental type is one of the 6 types of the power system (im currently calling it mana because its also a term for life energy like chakra, ki and chi)
In my opinion JOJO has the best power systems in all of anime/manga without a doubt.
Good choice! Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts!

Great points! Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
Yeah just like we're just born with 2 legs or sometimes 1. It just happens and finding out how requires science.

Sorry but stands are better
If you only consider mainstream anime then yes, it's a high level.
@@patatajoe3112 Nope, Nen is in it's own league in all of anime
@@ignited8119 I don't think you've watched a lot of (non-mainstream) anime. Nen is complex for the way it works (different types do different things and you can use them in different ways) but the effects it produces are pretty standards.
Use your nen --> Produce a standard power
OR
Use your nen with restrictions --> Produce a standard power boosted up in a directly proportional way to the limit you applied.
This really helps out
Really glad to hear that! Good luck with your power system!

@@stonalisa3729 That’s a good idea. Appreciate it.
@@TheRoomforImprovement I apologize to ask, But i'm curious, If one were to say, Become an ant hybrid, would it be the only one of its kind, or would it team up with other ant-hybrids to form a colony, if the latter is true, then what qualifications would make the queen hybrid? I know there's still a war going on about whether or not this is an anime or not, but I'm surprised you didn't make Avatar TLA an example. It's my favorite for 3 reasons
-1: The philosophy of "Merging different styles, cultures, and ways together makes you stronger"
Yes, Aang is the only one who can use all 4 elements, but that doesn't mean you can't take the ways of the 4 elements and incorporate their ways into your one element.
Very true! thank you for sharing your thoughts and adding to the discussion!
Sounds awesome! Thank you for taking the time to check out the video and share your thoughts! Best of luck with your story! It sounds cool!
That sounds a fun read and i hope you go with the idea. Only thing you need to worry is the sword techniques being too grand. Power ups should be simple things like better footwork or learning how to parry a single attack not like a sword that fires laser beams that destroys mountains.
Maybe you want to watch The Duellists (1977).
A battle shonen without supernatural powers? Kengan ashura does something similar. The only supernatural power I think is the speeding of blood the protagonist does but even that comes with extreme drawbacks.
Hajame no Ippo could be a good reference
Every Ego power's name is chosen through the formula
[Verb] + [Linker] + [Noun]
And so, you get stuff like Morph Your Wave, Dive in Darkness, Shield My Soul, Dance 'til Death, Hitch a Ride, Spin My Head, Shape The Earth, and Watch Your Back.
In case you're wondering yes, this idea was actually born as a terrible idea for a Jojo fan series. They were all stands with terrible music references. I changed the entire thing around when s friend of mine made me notice that at this point I could have just done something completely different instead of writing a crappy fanfiction.

@@taqresu5865 Sounds awesome! Best of luck!
@@taqresu5865 Sounds cool! Most ideas aren't completely original, it all comes down to how you execute it! Best of luck!
In terms of pure enjoyment, Stand power system is the best
Good choice!
Yeah! In Rule of cool showing off, Stands are unbeatable
Nen from HXH is legit the best power system i've ever seen, its so elaborate and it essentially has endless possibilities with the nen types ( specialization basically can do anything)
Very true!

@@returneefromthemoon thank you for taking the time to share some advice! I really appreciate it!
It exists, it's called LitRPG but sadly, unheard for visual works such as manga or anime.
This is a great idea. I am going to try and use this for mine. If you don’t mind
I am writting a manga right now and in my power system they have mana as their power source and in the universe there is a special pencil they draw a 100% on their arm then they can see how much mana they still have left which makes them use magic more strategiclly
Another thing is anyone here good at drawing please i need your help
I think the Nen System in Hunter x Hunter is a good power system, it depends on the creativity of the user and if he trains the ability, also for getting even more power you can put a condition to the ability, for me thats pretty balanced
Very true! Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts!
"In One Piece the devil fruits serve as the character's source of power"
Haki:Am I a joke to you?
Im currently writing a story, and have created a power system that I feel works.
Magic in my world can be used in two ways: Mana Control, and Wild Magic
Mana Control is the most common, and involves using physical Mana Crystals to channel magic into whatever form the Mana Crystal is (Think like Materia from FF7).
For me, I've somewhat simplified out my personal power system in my Lore that I make from boredom & interest:
Across the 8 Universes I have, there are 8 separate categories for power, with each one covering a wide basis.
Energy - Manipulating the energy in the world as it is
Element - Using a natural building block of the Universe as a tool/weapon
Supernatural - Abilities and forms that don't fit the natural world
Physical - The control & utilization of the body
Mind - The use of mental prowess & power
Soul - Using or influencing either your own spirit or anothers
Species - The bloodline & race you have
Gear - Tools, weapons & any form of equipment
Now, I will say, some of this stuff could be grouped together, but I find it easier to group them out and call anything that bridges the gaps a combination or an imitation.
A person who's born with the category of Elemental will have an easier time manipulating the world around them,
But someone who's not born with that category either takes longer to learn it or they must instead imitate it in alternate ways to create the same effect.
