I like aesthetics in series like Dorohedoro or Chainsaw man and, of course, Berserk. The amount of details in the panels which give clues or give you an idea of a characters state of mind is just peak art.
I think Land of the Lustrous' aesthetic is pretty underrated. The minimalism evokes a quiet emptiness that embodies the essence of Buddhism and gives the setting a peaceful yet sterile and desolate feeling

While it wasn't originally an anime or manga, the Persona series has always been an aesthetic favorite of mine. Everything looks cool. The characters, the title screen, the menus, the the personas themselves. Come to think of it, Japan has a lot of great design. From buildings to fashion to the way text is layered on out in magazines and books. Something that you might think would seem cluttered just works for some reason.
Gurren Lagann is a 2007 anime by the way. It looks SO fucking good. And you're right, they eyecatchers go hard. Also I think Gantz's aesthetic manga-wise are sick. The usage of just computer scanned backgrounds on top of beautifully illustrated characters (and they get even better with time) is amazing and works way too well. Tokyo Ghoul's art is insanely good too and looks really beautiful with how dark it is. And then JoJo too is really good. David Productions does JoJo and Fire Force HUGE justice. Long list of shit I love, done.
Dorohedoro has one of the best aesthetics I’ve ever seen and also 90s anime aesthetic it hits different berserk also also has a amazing aesthetic great video
Boichi is gotta be one of my favourite artists. The way he draws is amazing (especially because I'm a sucker for realizm). Even tho he uses mostly black and white colors, his colored artworks (covers for example) also are also great even if his shading is different, due to the use of colors, you can still recognize that Boichi drew them. Also the backgrounds he draws are insanely detailed and beautiful.
I’ve always been a fan of Bleach’s aesthetic and I think it’s the most stylish of the Big 3. Dr. Stone is one that I have also loved throughout its run. Those full page spreads showing the night sky were amazing. On the anime side of things, I much prefer the classic One Piece style (up to Skypiea) over the current style
I love sketchy aesthetics in manga. While it's the polar opposite of the more "polished" types, it sells *RAWNESS* so well with series like: Jujutsu Kaisen, Mob Psycho 100, HxH, Demon Slayer, Oyasumi Punpun, early D.Gray-man, any Oshimi Shuzo story and more
I don't think Oyasumi Punpun is considered "sketchy" though, its like one of the most polished manga out there as how Asano Inio usually do. Like its only Punpun that looks like a simple sketch and when grew up the only sketchy part is his head. Even with video interviews of the author you can actually see how he thoroughly draw and polish his highly detailed backgrounds. Yes it does feel raw but not "sketchy" its more of it feel's realistically raw that it can induce trauma.
I love Kaiji's Ultimate Survivors sharp and in a way cartoony aesthetic. I think that it gives the series a really unique look and helps with conveying the emotions the characters are feeling. Also Dorohedoro the Absolute GOAT. Masked, read After God tho.
Fun fact: The creator of Dorohedoro also worked on Blame! As a background art assistant. It's easy to see her apply her experience with background art in both Dorohedoro and Dai Dark. Also, what's that last manga panel from? It's absolutely amazing!
I don’t know if that technically counts as aesthetics too but I love the clothes and costume design in CLAMP mangas. If they’ve proven one thing it’s that they’re a group of women who have an incredible sense of fashion. Just take Cardcaptor Sakura for example, where else do you get a magical girl on in-line skates that fights every single fight in a different costume
Dorohedoro’s art style is what got me to read it. I have never heard of it but I saw it on Amazon while looking for another book. The messy/scratchy style of it seems so creative to me but I can see how others find it unappealing. My sister says it makes her feel uneasy 🤷🏽♀️
My personal favorite aesthetic in manga is Bleach, Tite Kubo just has this style all throughout the series and I love it! I also love the JJK and CSM aesthetic, it’s got that rough kinda style to it that really sells the feelings of those mangas. Berserk too with the gothic medieval aesthetic.
Bleach will always be my fav manga, BUT man does Dorohedoro has the best aesthetic and vibe. Highly recommend reading the manga with some Creepy, foreboding or gothic like soundtrack in background. 🖤
I haven't read a lot of Houseki no Kuni (still planning to though) but the author Haruko Ichikawa just has this kind of style that draws you into the world immediately and never lets you go again. My favorite kind of aesthetics in manga are the ones that either have this certain magical something to them that has this light feeling but with heavy dark undertones (examples: Pandora Hearts, Umineko, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles) or the ones that just give off a relaxing feeling that just lets you be able to lean back and enjoy what you're reading (examples: Bloom Into You, Girls Last Tour[funnily enough that one fits in both categories], Tsurezurebiyori). There's just something about stuff like that that makes it more relatable and makes you just feel at home. Also, if you want a recommendation for a show that gives off the same vibes as the Gurren Lagann eyecatches, watch FLCL. It's only 6 episodes and it's fking amazing.
Now I haven’t read vagabond yet but when I come across the occasional panel on Instagram I’m blown away. Something about the realistic black and white just moves me in some way. It just feels so raw and full of emotion. Coming across those definitely make me want to read vagabond but it’ll be a while until I get to it.
Imagine the visual aesthetics and atmosphere from DANNY PHANTOM but then perfectly mix all of it with that of the anime known as SHIKI CORPSE DEMON. NOW YOU HAVE THESE BEAUTIFUL SPOOKY CHARACTERS IN A HAUNTED BEAUTIFUL ETERNAL NIGHT WORLD. MY EYES WOULD FEEL LIKE THEY ARE IN HEAVEN.
Just wanted to mention that the picture of Q Hayashida at 2:07 is actually a singer called Natsuki Mari and not the author (we don't know what she actually looks like). Just for some reason her face shows when you google Q Hayashida.
Man, why didn't I think of that?! Of course Dorohedoro's world and character designs felt rough. Cause it was inspired by freaking SLIPKNOT. You made my day Mask. Gonna watch Dorohedoro anime soon. I finished the manga just the couple of months ago. Never thought the author liked slipknot so much. It's a Disasterpiece
This is one of my favorite videos you've made. It's so nice to hear you just gush about things you like for once because it seems like you've been pretty burnt out lately
One of my favorite aesthetics is that of Gamon Sakurai's Ajin. There's just an excessive level of rule of cool in the story that just allows me to enjoy the story beyond it being written well. The author loves weaponry a lot so the guns are so beautifully drawn and the gunplay is accurate and excessive, pair that with the immortality of the demi-humans and it just becomes an onslaught of cool.
brutal! we are on the same side bro. being BLAME! my favorite manga of all time and DOROHEDORO my second fav. manga hahaha... great video! Tayo Katsumoto has an unique great stile too, he has a great tallent creating worlds and movement. Cheers!!
i love sakamoto shinichi's aesthetic, especially innocent/innocent rouge and drcl, he rarely uses onamatopoeaia, and the art has this doll-like, dreamy feel to it, which is quite a contrast to the themes he discusses, i love how he uses digital tools to his advantage to make traditional-looking art, i could stare for hours
I wish more anime had an aesthetic or style whatever that is similar to SOUL EATER. That beautiful Halloween style. Then add the beautiful use of black and green from Danny Phantom.
I've noticed that I am drawn to two polar opposite facets of art design. Extreme cleanliness and vibrant proportionism, and absurdist grittiness with an overbearing roughness. You chose some great examples for this video so I'll elaborate on those. Take Dorohedoro for example. I finished it a couple of weeks ago, and while I have my problems with the direction the series took later on, the world and character designs are steeped in such a decrepit, rough yet intricate and genuine way that the series is in another stratosphere of animanga artwork because of it. Even when characters literally become weightless, you can sense the weight. Land of the Lustrous incorporates stunning CGI and makes every aspect of the world shimmer regardless of time or weather, and it's because of that overbearing neatness that makes watching it feel so lonely even if characters are constantly talking. A non-3D example of this would be Mushoku Tensei. Gurren Lagann, and really any show made by Trigger, has such a unique vibe regardless of the tone or intention. Heavy machinery moves in a bouncy, cartoon-ish way and it feels like individual limbs have their own centre of gravity to convey swift motion. And the colour palette, my dudes? Forget about it. Gives each show under their belt a timeless and iconic edge. Mob Psycho also goes hard for these reasons. All in all, I love the way that animation can explore fantastical elements in different ways. You could give five artists an outline and they would colour it all in different ways. The reason I'm so tough on anime feeling generic all the time is because when an author or director gets it right, it becomes unforgettable, and that's the feeling I chase after.
Houseki no Kuni has such an elegant style. A friend of mine once mentioned that the gems in the manga look like they're fashion croquis and that blew my mind because before that I couldn't find a better way to describe it. Also the environments usually have very clear lines and sharp structure, like those futuristic architecture designs
there are only a few series that make you believe that "things go on..." even when you close the book you re reading! berserk is a series that from the start makes you feel that "something" is always "lurking" in that world...allmost like a metaphsical presence is always there with the charactes/ppl of that story.thats another "way" is the way knights of sidonia makes you feel.you can "see" ppl go on with their lives in that world, sidonia is allmost like a living creature...same goes for blame too,you can imagine him going thru those crazy distances even when you take a break from reading that story... i love stories thatmake their worlds "rich" and "active"....i kinda put that n general "aesthetic" of a series together
Dorohedoro's aesthetic is peak for me. It's messy and gritty, but that contributes so much to the overall feel of the Manga. I was worried that the anime wouldn't be able to capture that, but it surprised me despite being so colorful. The music was also top notch. That similar roughness is also why I like Chainsaw Man and I wonder if it drew inspiration from Dorohedoro, what with the combination of brutality and zaniness, absurdity. Particularly that one scene with doors and the demon of darkness. Out of the big three, early Bleach also had more of an edge, which is why I preferred it's art, though it didn't have that grit. Jujutsu Kaisen has some of that too, a bit rougher than early Bleach maybe.
Really surprised to see no one talk about Araki's work in the comments. His unique aesthetic, strong grasp of fashion, and just straight up talent for utter s w a g hooks me so hard, and he's constantly pushing the limits of what he can achieve. Love his art so damn much, so distinct.
All the series you mentioned are awesome in their own right just by their aesthetic. But their stories are all great as well. Agree with everything you said. Nice video masked 👍🏻
DOROHEDORO is definitely one of the most Nu-metal mangas I've ever read, the aesthetic of it really reminds me of not just Slipknot but many other Nu-Metal/Industrial bands like Nine Inch Nails and Static X. And the clothing they wear in the manga is definitely very 90s mall goth, also really reminds me of this comic series called Johnny the Homicidal Maniac.
It's a recent thing, but right now I sort of attribute that "retro" feel of retro anime you mentioned there to the cels. Painted cels seen through our screen just feels different with digitally painted shows.
3:14 I think a series that was cancelled that you recommended in another video also has this kind of style and the artwork is amazing: Black Torch. Tsuyoshi Takaki's art is amazing.
For me music might even play bigger part in the aesthetic than the artwork, at least if we're talking about anime. I could listen to Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo OSTs any day of the week and remember the feelings I had when I first watched them. That's why they're some of my all time favorites. And even though I've only watched three Episodes of FLCL so far it's the punk rock blaring in the background of all most every scene that already made it instantly memorable for me. The most recent example for incredible musical aesthetic (in addition to amazing unique visuals) has been Sonny Boy, I don't think I will ever forget what that anime made me feel just based on the OST that portrayed its thematics so well
Yesss Dorohedoro is a gem fr, Dadadan seems to be kinda in the same category. Mugen no juunin is also really cool. And I gotta admit, the character designs in Tokyo revengers are all really clean..
I’m quite a fan of takeshi obatas (artist of Death note, bakuman, platinum end all you need is kill etc) style and aesthetic. Also I really love magis spiky and shiny kind of feel and I also love the D gray man aesthetic.
I think the aesthetics of 80s anime like Urusei Yatsura, Fist of the North Star, and Cobra are underappreciated. From the clothes to the vibrant colors, manga and anime from that time period are something I admire.
I don't know how to describe it but i love the aesthetic of 20th century boys or any of urasawas works really, I don't know what it is about them, maybe the subtle roughness or the cartoonist character designs on top of incredibly detailed backgrounds
My favourite aesthetic in any anime is definitely Redline ig not just for the shadows on realistic looking faces but also how the animation conveys SPEED using warped perspectives one of the most erotically hype animes ever
It's kind of wild just how different aesthetic sensibilities can be. For me this video was like a perfect showcase of aesthetics that I hate (except land of the lustrous). I also just cannot find it in myself to enjoy any aesthetic in black and white. I've tried many times but my brain just hates it and makes manga basically unreadable for me whereas I've enjoyed some manwha that probably had worse story and character content just because I can actually enjoy looking at it.
bros if you want aesthetic then read jagaaaaaan its a where grotesque, body horror, syfy, phycological ride that has a lot of themes about the self and world perspectives of the characters.
I still haven't gotten over how a long time ago a could have bought a volume of blame but I preferred to buy 2 comic book for the same price 😭! Great video

And the clothing they wear in the manga is definitely very 90s mall goth, also really reminds me of this comic series called Johnny the Homicidal Maniac.
Ayooo was expecting bleach but we cool.
Truth be told nice vid though, you tackle topics that other big manga-tubers barely scratch.
I really love Hellsing's environment. The zombies, vampires a sense of danger it's just amazing
The most recent example for incredible musical aesthetic (in addition to amazing unique visuals) has been Sonny Boy, I don't think I will ever forget what that anime made me feel just based on the OST that portrayed its thematics so well
You’re just like me oh my god
the gothic and medieval aesthetic of berserk >>>
You got a sick sponsor today. DFO is legitimately good y'all.
Great content as always👌
Yesss Dorohedoro is a gem fr, Dadadan seems to be kinda in the same category. Mugen no juunin is also really cool. And I gotta admit, the character designs in Tokyo revengers are all really clean..
always loved the aesthetics of Soul eater and Bleach, and more recently Chainsaw man
When you showed Gurren Lagann I yelled that even my parents heard me from the kitchen! It's my fav mecha & holds special place in my heart.
The aesthetic in both Anime And Manga are equally amazing imo 🤝
Nothing can beat DoroHeDoro in that department.
And FLCL, omg seeing that brought some memories.
The gurren lagann eye catches are great
I think my favorite style by far just due to how unique it looks is dowman seimans style. Voynich Hotel is such a vibe dude.
Speaking of aesthetics, I do think people always tend to forget how amazing Oh-great's art is.
2:08 That picture is actually not Q hayashida but a Japanese singer named Natsuki Mari
Masked Man the GOAT!
Masked getting excited by lizard aesthetics is hilarious.
I’ve been reading Blame! And bro the art is roughy but so detailed, and the art is fire
Imma hit the like before I even watch cos ik this about to be heat 🔥
bros if you want aesthetic then read jagaaaaaan its a where grotesque, body horror, syfy, phycological ride that has a lot of themes about the self and world perspectives of the characters.
I legit smiled when I heard the Gurren Lagann Eyecatches, they are PEAK style
All facts, halloween themed manga look amazing!!!
God damn those edits at the end tho
I still haven't gotten over how a long time ago a could have bought a volume of blame but I preferred to buy 2 comic book for the same price 😭! Great video
So many great aesthetics in manga and anime. I love your videos,
also what anime/shows 0:06 - 0:22?
I'd also love to know!
Same 🥲
Its a pv from a trailer I used called "false memory" its being worked on by a chinese company rn check it out
@@ness3984 I checked that out but there was also another anime in that bit that wasn’t part of false memory
@@catcatto3886 if you mean the first very bit, thats black clover, other than that all I can recall is false memory and black clover before the sponsorship
Bastard heavy metal dark fantasy anime is coming out in Netflix with evidently dark fantasy and heavy metal influences. Very old series. Oh you finished land of the lustrous. Should also check out fire force too
Oh shit a masked video. Today is a good day
I recently subscribed to you, but when I discovered that you like slipknot, made you my favourite UA-camr,
Also if you didn't know, soul eater and fire force are connected, basically fire force is the prequal to soul eater
Ok so Gurren Lagann and Land of The Lustrous... my top 1 of each medium are referenced in this... thanks Masked.
Wake up babe masked posted
Not anime or manga, but I absolutely love Skull Girls' artstyle and overall aesthetic.
Persona is another one, especially P5 (shocker) and the arena games.
And Mahvel 3. And 3rd Strike.
As far as actual anime/manga go, yeah Gurren Lagann is amazing. As is Kill La Kill. I also love the 90s aestethic and even the 2000s. 2000s era anime aesthetic is just really nostalgic to me.
Ken Akamatsu is another one.
there’s something about the first Soul Eater episode that makes me with we got more of the halloween downtown aesthetic
0:00-0:25 What is the song used for the intro?
Redline is one beautiful show. Not for everyone but if u are a car enthusiast would recommend the movie...
DO FUCKING GLAD TTGL AND NIHEI GOT MENTIONED Nihei's newest manga Aposimz is such a clean and minimalist evolution of Nihei's art style and I think it's worth taking a look at. It's like a clean, distilled version of his past gritty and ultra detailed work.
Very cool editing
