CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When Jack lets (Robert De Niro) Jonathan (Charles Grodin) go, Jonathan gives Jack a very generous gift of nearly $300,000.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Director Martin Brest, of Going in Style and Beverly Hills Cop fame, was in charge of Midnight Run. Robert De Niro stars as Jack Walsh, a hard-bitten bounty hunter offered $100,000 to bring in embezzler Jonathan Mardukas (Charles Grodin). Handcuffed to the wimpy Mardukas, Walsh assumes that the extradition trip from New York to Los Angeles will be an uneventful one. But the prisoner hasn't told Walsh the whole story: the embezzler owes $15 million to a mobster (Dennis Farina), and he's been targeted for assassination. It's a toss-up as to what is the most entertaining aspect of Midnight Run: the slam-bang action and chase sequences or the verbal byplay between DeNiro and Grodin.
CREDITS:
TM & © Universal (1988)
Cast: Robert De Niro, Charles Grodin, Joe Pantoliano
Director: Martin Brest
Producers: Martin Brest, William S. Gilmore, Dan York

“See you in the next life”.....RIP Charles Grodin
He died ?
@@henryalugoro9049 Yeah a couple of days ago.
Great wit,RIP CG.I always loved that slow bluesy spiritual piano at the end of this.Perhaps my favorite all time Movie
Well said
That just made me cry....we will see him again
Grodin's chemistry with De Niro made the movie.
RIP Charles Grodin.
Best Movie!🕊🙏
This film doesn’t have one dull moment. It’s compelling at all times.
By far my favorite comedy movie.
What makes this ending great is the film understands sometimes the most meaningful relationships you have are temporary. So many movies in this genre shoehorn a way in at the end for the buddies to stay together, like they become partners, etc. But in Midnight Run the goodbye is real and that makes it 100 times more effective.
What a great scene. How many action comedies can end with such a legitimately emotional finish? RIP Charles Grodin.
14.
Yes, that was just beautiful. As you said: legitimately emotional, not pathetic
They shouldn’t have cut it off before he looks back and sees that Grodin is already gone
a great ending to a master piece comedy drama
If you're a 90's kid, this is the kind of film your dad introduces you to and fall in love with.
It’s THE film that my dad introduced me to and I have it memorized. One of the best Buddy films ever.
Yep. I remember watching this with my dad all the time. He loves this movie
Same here, my Dad showed it to me. One of the golden moments I will always cherish in my life.
Hope he didn't introduce it to you when you were too young, movie's got some f bombs here or there.
@@kennarajora6532 my dad cussed all the time with those f bombs like this. 🤣
Also like how Jack giving him the watch symbolizes Jack letting go of the past.
Sorta reminds me of Charles Bronson stuffing that harmonica in dying Frank's mouth at the end of "Once Upon A Time In The West".
One of the best movies ever made, from an era where they still depended heavily on acting and character.
Don't forget script! The banter between all of the characters is incredible.
Watched it for the first time on Netflix yesterday. Really enjoyed it, great movie!
@@weylandyutanicorporate yep great movies have it all great story, characters, great actors, great lines and this movie had them all which is unsurprisingly why it's such a great movie.
Yep a movie with an actual plot 😊
You're totally correct
“See you in the next life.” -Charles Grobin
RIP you legend 1935-2021
Im so shocked he has died two months after Yaphette Kotto.
Wait he’s 53 in this? Wtf
@@willdavey6570 Dennis Farina was 44 and he looked alot older than Charles Grobin.
@@willdavey6570Grodin aged well
DeNiro's lost expression and the way he quickly turns after he says, "Something to remember our adventure by..." gets me every time. Because he is alone in the world and his one shot was this bounty, but did the decent thing anyway because it is in his nature. Further, he transforms the symbol of his own entrapment in regret - the watch - into a symbol of Grodin's freedom. It doesn't get any better written, or acted, than this final scene.
Nicely done.
I agree with you wholeheartedly😊
The final scene is about true friendship... Every single detail is perfect: "Thank you. No thank you." I love that.
Amen brother
❤
RIP Charles Grodin. One of the only actors to steal scenes from Robert DeNiro.
I LIVE LIKE HOUR AWAY FROM CHARLES
HES IN WILTON,CT IM IN EASTERN,CT
GOD BLESS YOU CHARLES
Always thought that same thing about this movie - it's near impossible to steal scenes from an actor of De Niro's caliber but Grodin managed it. All throughout the film, in fact. It seemed like he was leading and De Niro was following. A perfect pairing. RIP Mr. Grodin.
Oh no RIP
@@walterlv01"Would you leave me alone!"
"It's not a payoff, it's a gift. You already let me go." - That's gotta be one of the greatest lines in context of the overall story, not just for this movie, but for any movie. This hands down is my favorite movie ending of all time.

Absolutely.
I'm in gear company right here. I love this ending.
One of the most underrated movies of all time!
I could not agree more with that statement. LOVE this film.
Love You !!
Wouldn't call it underrated when so many people love it and so many screenwriters from other movies and tv shows admitted they were inspired from it.
I've only ever met one person who saw it and didn't like it. It's far from underrated.
Nooo, not the obligatory UA-cam underrated comment, and on one of the best films ever made. Ffs!!!
Movies like these..are the definition of A great decade ...forever 80s...
Jorge Gaytan a time period that will forever be cherished and sadly never able to re live or replicated
JustinLodes well said.....
This movie was the best ever to watch. I couldn't stop laughing because it was so damn great! Wish they made more movies like this one!
*De Niro is greatest actor ever*
Jorge Gaytan 100% indeed
One of the best films ever. Funny, exciting and incredibly touching. If you disagree we cannot be friends.
I know you had money but I didn't know you HAD money.
Classic.
Rest in peace, Duke. And, we'll see you in the next life.
this movie is perfection, you literally never get bored to watch it. contains so much comedy and yet its so emotional. Have watched this scene probably more than 50 times already and i will never get bored of it
One of the most underrated movie's. RIP Grodin. You made us laugh and cry 🥲
It’s not underrated.
I love this scene such emotion thanks for sharing ❤️
RIP Charles Grodin. This was one oft the most beautiful movies in the 20 Century. See you on the next life.
am i the only one who thinks that scene with his daughter deserves many awards? never remake this ANYONE
“See you in the next life”
RIP Charles Grodin❤️🙏🏻
Am not ashamed to say I cried at this movie. Top film.
85hellopeople me too
I got choked up the first time. It's just that good.
Same here
it's okay ...I cried too
Same 🙋
See you in the next life Duke. RIP Charles Grodin.
Through it all....you can make friends with people, no matter what the situation is.
Be kind to each other.
That’s the moral of the film’s story among other things.
This film has a lot of heart.
R.I.P. Charles Grodin.
See you in the next life.
Such an epic ending to a great movie!! Love when DeNiro says "no thank you John" shows the change that he has gone thru and the closure that John helped bring to his life with so many regrets and loose ends. They really have a great bond with each other and even if John wouldn't have given him the money he still received a lot from him. The money was a great surprise. One of my all time favorite movies!!
And also Jack giving John the watch. He held on to it all those years because it represented a link to his past that he hoped he could somehow get back. Giving away the watch meant Jack was ready to move on.
See you in the next life, Mr. Grodin.
"It's not a payoff, it's a gift. You've already let me go". I used this quote so many times in my life, without recalling its origin, I know it now. Thanks for sharing this clip..
You must of been in a lot of police stations blagging your way out then eh?! 😆
One of the best scenes ever - RIP Charles Grodin.
Besides being a great piece of writing and directing, the music is used perfectly in this film.
The music score is top drawer
Danny Elfman is magical
chicago = blues
Beautiful movie and I watched it at a special theatre
Was surprised when Grodin wasn't nominated as best supporting actor. Perfect foil to Deniro. Love this movie!
When this came out, I thought, "De Niro...and Grodin? It's gotta be stunt casting, Can't be a good movie."
Never so happy to be wrong. A lot of great actors, intense scene, and a real payoff of an ending...capped with the Duke disappearing again and De Niro's character trying to get change for a $1000 bill.
You can make the case that both DeNiro (lead) and Grodin (supporting) should've been nominated. Rarely have two actors displayed better chemistry in a movie.
@@Comictalent
Well De Niro at least got a golden globe nomination. Grodin didn't even get that.
RIP Mr Charles Grodin. You were good.
so sorry to hear of Charles' passing.... I'm 55 and this movie in in my all time top 5
Me as well. Can watch it a million times and never get tired of it.
What are your other top films in that list?
Blow
Goodfellas
Reservoir Dogs
No question. Fantastic in every way.
This story is so satisfying on many levels , Jack keeps his integrity and still gets rewarded , the sleaze ball LA bondsman gets stiffed for half a mil, Marvin gets spanked and Serrano goes down epically and finally the Duke sees a person who shows him true kindness restoring his faith in humanity, you can see it in his eyes.
So eloquently put!!!
The chemistry between the two actors is both honest and surprising. They simply "clicked" at a fundamental level. Two experts in the field working together.
@@karazor-el6085 DeNiro said at times Grodin genuinely annoyed him
You are a wordsmith!!!!
See you in the next life, Mr. Grodin. RIP
Marty Brest knows how to make a movie that's mega rich in character and story and sealed with great acting, De'niro says this is one of the best films he's been involved in, I can see why,, easily in my top ten of greatest films ever.
This movie was so good that, beside watching it over and over again, I'm still waiting for Midnight Run 2 in the past 30 years!
This is the movie that made DeNiro a bank-able star
"See you in the next life"
Absolutely 1 of America's all-time underrated films.
The definition of a great movie is it holds up well after repeat viewing, this is such a film.
R.I.P Charles Grodin 🌷🌹🥀
Thank You ♥️
Goodbye. 😥
RIP Charles. “See you in the next life.”
I CAN STILL WATCH THIS MOVIE ALL DAY...ALWAY A GOOD MOOD PICKERUPER...
Eyesopen Notshut me too
Love it :)
I love the way they look at each other right before parting, as they were impressing the other's face in the memory, and the rough pat Jack gives to John :D
And I guess Jack after all did open his coffee shop, called it Midnight coffe and run it with Denise; and when it's dark and they're closing the Duke visits every now and then, and the heart-warming piano plays :)
An excellent movie. Grodin and DeNiro hit it off perfectly. The best parts of this movie is when these two simply talk to one another. It was a fun paced story, never a dull moment and had this clip went further, a very poignant and satisfying ending.
+pete saws One of my favorites!
Joshua Montague no, I can't.
There was suppose to be a sequel shot about 5 years ago, the script was written and everything. Grodin's character finds Jack to help him find his missing son. But they were never able to get the production off the ground.
Honestly most movies don't need sequels. "Analyze That' comes to mind. As much as I would like to see one it's perhaps better to let this gem stand on its own. A great movie!
"This is good, this is VERY good"!! Amazing scene, brilliant movie.
Hats of to all.
Goodbye charles. One of the best
See you in the next life ,,, and thanks so much, Mr.Charles Grodin.
Jack: "You have change for 1,000?"
Cab Driver: "What are you, a comedian? Get outta here ya bum!"
Jack: "Looks like I'm walkin."
"No John, thank you" guess Jack Walsh learnt a thing or two on that trip 😊
RIP Charles Gordin! See you in the next life!
RIP Charles Grodin. 😥
One of Deniros best roles!!! Love this film!!!
It's stupid how they cut out the last part before it ends when he asks the taxi driver if he's got change of a thousand and the driver says "get out of here ya bum"! Lol classic
Taxi driver^ stupid auto correct
John J. Rambo Look for it.
John J. Rambo when I first heard that taxi driver say that I thought he must be from New York ...
the whole movie is Gold !!
"what are you a comedian" 😂
"very respectable neighborhood"
It would be worth 600k today in 2020. Still a respectable neighborhood.
The "see you in the next life" exchange is actually them admitting to themselves that they became friends.... If you see the movie, the same piano music is playing when he drives away from his daughter, heartbreaking scene.....
@Michael Quinn Absolutely.. only this particular clip misses that very last, spine-tingling, tear-jerker of a chord when Jack takes one final look back, and Grodin's gone..in the wind.
One film that I can watch over and over again.
This is one of De Niro's and Grodin's best performances. The way Grodin looks at him with affection and De Niro reciprocates the look, like two brothers parting ways. Great film
This and the scene with his daughter really brought a human element to this story. A good story. One you never get tired of watching
Get you a guy who looks at you the way Charles Grodin looks at Robert De Niro
RIP Charles Grodin. See you in the next life.
We see countless movie scenes about one man deciding another man's fate and making a merciful decision. This scene works for reminding us how true friendship can form between even the most clashing individuals. When they see each other in the next life, that could be a promising sequel. 👍🏻
Thank you for the good childhood memories Mr C.Groden. Along with your talkshow. RIP
i watched this 3 times in theater when i was young , love this movie very much
I am so lucky that I just watched it. I wish I watched earlier:)
The reason this scene is so great is that it is done simply. If they won't over the top with music and acting it would have been a crap ending but instead we feel the chemistry and respect between the two. I'm Moseley!!!
Agent Foster Grant!
The problem with this scene is the denomination of the bills. It's idiotic. The writers were mental midgets.
@@MrJamberee Oh look another idiot troll lol.
@@MrJamberee Not really. They did have $1,000 bills, and plenty of them, in the 1980's. Even in the year 2020, there are still over 160,000 $1k bills still in circulation.
@@karazor-el6085 Thanks Kara, I just made a comment on whether or not the $1,000 bills exist or not and you answered my question. If there are over 160,000 of these bills still floating around in circulation maybe I may find one for my coin collections. There might even be some $500. bill still in circulation.
Yes the scene with his daughter was perfect. The acting was so good that it really felt like it was real life. This movie is my favourite movie of all time and I watch it every week. It just makes me feel good inside. Whenever I need some life lessons, I watch this movie, it reminds me what is really important in life and it always makes me laugh. The best kind of comedy is a comedy with some real life lessons.
"... I KNOW you had Money. I didn't know you HAD Money."
impeccable line, and impeccable delivery by a Master of his Craft.
A really underrated film. Robert De Niro and Grodin played off well against each other. Supporting cast was good also. Really neat script idea.

This movie is such a poem, why don't we see movies like this anymore?
Lack of passion and talent in Hollywood now.
I've been a loyal fan of DeNiro for a long time. Midnight Run is one of his best movies I like it very much. Charles Grodin's performance was equally outstanding. RIP, CG.
A surprisingly emotional ending to an already fantastic movie. These two bidding farewell to each other for good just tugs at the heartstrings.
I LOVE THIS PART MAKES ME CRY EVERY TIME ESPECIALLY WHEN JACK TURNS AROUND AND THE DUKE IS GONE😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
2:17 god damn De Niro! Those nails.

the tenderness that exists between these two characters was a really nice touch that you generally don't see in action films
One of the best movie duos ever ! Such a great great movie !
Thank you for the laughs Charles Grodin. See you in the next life.
good bye Grodin I will remember you forever.
I love the subtle repetition of "I don't know what to say", and how they play out slightly differently. It's played for a very gentle laugh in the first instance with Jack's quip, he's all business and doesn't want to get too emotional (he's still wounded from giving up the bounty), but once the kindness is repaid by the Duke and Jack finds himself saying the same words, it hits different. They linger in the moment, each man acknowledging the other's selflessness and how they've helped each other move on from their past lives.
"See you in the next life"
