There is a similar scene in the 1972 film "The Heartbreak Kid" that starred Charles Grodin and Cybill Shepherd, though this deadpan version is much funnier. I don't know if Grodin suggested this sequence for the film or if writer George Gallo or director Martin Brest (who has a cameo as the airline ticket clerk) suggested it, as they were most likely familiar with his earlier film.
This one, & the scene where DeNiro is in the phone booth saying he's gonna throw Grodin in the river - but gives him an "I don't mean it" look, are my 2 favorite scenes. Rest in Peace Charles Grodin. Loved your acting & how late night hosts interviewed you !
I love that book! Most hilarious stories about being a struggling actor I have ever read, especially the one about the acting school, where he slept on a mattress that smelled like a rat died in it, and then later discovered a rat actually did die in it.
I was on a first date once, pulled a £20 note from my wallet to pay for the first round. While I was waiting I absentmindedly straightened and cleaned off a crumpled edge of the note with my fingers. The girl next to me at the bar (not my date) said "are you doing the litmus configuration?" She had pulled! Best pick up line ever. Not even sure I went back to my official date's table.
I really really hope that's true. Please tell me it is, even if it isn't, and that you now have 2 kids and are really super happy. And a dog...you have a dog.
"Would you describe exactly what the last man who passed a $20 bill to you looked like?" "30, tall." "About 6 feet tall?" "6'5." "Dark brown hair?'" "Light colored." "Sounds like our man." 😂
Sounds like they were describing the manager and the symbolism is perfect because his name is Bill which represents the stack of money and his last name is redwood symbolizing the red cardigan he’s clearly wearing.
I just can't believe they were able to shoot this without rolling on the floor laughing, Seriously, I'm trying to repeat those lines with a straight face, it's impossible, and it has been impossible since 1988 🤣 The 80's gave us so many priceless comedies! From this to Overboard, or Trading places, don't even know where to begin
This scene stole the whole movie as great as the rest of them are. But dammit John had me in tears with the eye contact and the way he turned to his left to speak to the older man. 😂
Too bad the exchange right before that isn’t in this. Duke: now take off my handcuffs Walsh: take off your handcuffs?? Duke: do you want something to eat or not ?” Walsh: you fuck with me..... Duke: yeah you’ll punch me in the head and throw me in the thing
The thing about this scene that always killed me was they pulled off a great con for grocery money and then they ended up dumping the groceries to get on the train lol
The brilliance of this scene is that moment where The Duke asks Jack ‘are you doing the litmus configuration?’ Almost to catch him out and to make him anxious.😬
Back in the 90's when i was training ELECTRICAL apprentices I would use the "LITMUS CONFIGURATION" liberally. EX: "Hey, we cant get the heater to work..." "Did you fuckers use the LITMUS CONFIGURATION?" THEN ID START LAUGHING LIKE A MENTAL CASE.
One of the most underrated movies of all time. Certainly the funniest film of all time 🕰️ in my opinion. Love the emotional touch of two of them occasionally bonding and Jack sharing his vulnerability.
I wish they made a movie with Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin as FBI agents in a buddy cop movie. I can definitely see these two play partners that annoy each other in a buddy cop comedy movie.
What I like about this movie is that they never quite become "buddies." They just begrudgingly develop a certain amount of mutual admiration for each other's skills.
I am rewatching “Midnight Run” tonight in honour of Charles Grodin.
He was amazing in this movie.
Rest In Peace.
I am doing exactly the same thing. He was not only a great actor but also a very brilliant human being. Rest in peace, Mr. Grodin.
Him and Deniro's chemistry was a amazing in this film. Movies like this get blown off for academy awards, but could these 2 be any better?
The old guy next to Charles Grodin was my Uncle, Bill Fritz. He answered a local casting call for extras... Sadly he passed away about 10 years ago.
Sorry to hear that man. He can always be remembered by starring there. Safe
God bless.
A brief appearance in such a renown and epic movie is worth remembering in many a lifetime! RIP, Mr. Bill Fritz.
Did he get groupies?
That's dreadful I hope everything will be okay for u only
"six feet tall? six five! dark brown hair. light colored. that's our man." those lines crack me up every time!
lol
The best dead pan ever. Saw it in the theater 1987'is, this scene made me lol!!! To this day. Thank you Charles!!!!
"you get em' all the time!" Love it. Charles Grodin was so good in this.
De Niro’s face when they look at each other after that line! 😂
lol omg Grodin's performance here is legendary..

Hes Awesome !😆
He’s just died as well, RIP Charles Grodin.
so hilarious lmaooo RIP charles
He died yesterday
Grodin’s final suspicious glance at the old guy before they walk away is subtle comic brilliance 😂
This is in the pantheon of perfect comedic scenes.
This one, & the scene where DeNiro is in the phone booth saying he's gonna throw Grodin in the river - but gives him an "I don't mean it" look, are my 2 favorite scenes. Rest in Peace Charles Grodin. Loved your acting & how late night hosts interviewed you !
Ha ha ya that phone booth scene is the best too.
Yes, mine too!

HE DOESN'T" LIKE TO FLY?? WHAT THE F*** DOES THAT MEAN???
Robert De Niro, Charles Grodin and Yaphet Kotto, the three actors with the honour of introducing themselves as "Alonzo Mosley, FBI".
😂😂
RIP charles, and yaphet
I'M MOSELY!!!
Yes its safe to say "Alonzo Mosley" must have been a pretty popular name with the people who made Midnight Run
I introduce myself as him often!
RIP Charles Grodin 🙏😢😪💔
Everybody are seeing and feeling Charles Grodin has died huh, I'm so shocked aswell
The sheer awesomeness of this scene cannot be quantified in human terms. Thanks for posting
💛
Grodin: Are you doing the litmus configuration?
DeNiro: Litmus configumeration
😂
@Major Marquis Warren I love 80s action comedy movies! They don't make them like this anymore
@Major Marquis Warren it's not a real word that's why it's funny he made it up!
Lol I noticed that too
Grodin is doing police 'work' there better than Deniro...shows how long Jack had not been involved.
It always bummed me out that they lose so many of their groceries after that brilliant con 🙈
Me too! A little more care and they could have jumped the train AND kept the groceries (and enjoyed the groceries on the long train trip)
Me too. I felt like I lost the groceries
pity they didnt include de niro shouting out son of a bitch continously
Because he has to climb to the other side of the train.
All that bread, peanut butter, beef jerky and god knows what else!
The dialogue in this film is so solid. I laugh every time.
RIP Charles Grodin, just heard he’s died aged 86, this, imo was his best piece of film acting, this is such a great movie. Gone but not forgotten.
This movie is hilarious, thrilling, poignant, well-acted and infinitely quotable. Pretty much perfect.
He would’ve been 52-53 during filming of this and tbh he looked amazing for his age at the time. In the 80s a 50 yr old looked 70
RIP the great Charles Grodin. His dry sense of humor will be missed.
Bar None the most underrated actor. Grodin is fantastic. I just finished reading his book written in 1989. What a truly awesome guy.
I love that book! Most hilarious stories about being a struggling actor I have ever read, especially the one about the acting school, where he slept on a mattress that smelled like a rat died in it, and then later discovered a rat actually did die in it.
Man I need to read this book sounds great
@@alonzomosley7 - Hey, how do we know you're the real "Alonzo Mosley" and not an impostor?
@@MkeKen67 Man you are going to make watch this brilliant movie again !!! Wow what a movie I laugh the whole way through everytime 😂
Rest in Peace, Charles Grodin, I will always remember this film from my teenage years. I still enjoy it today.
That old guy always cracks me up. Just two lines. He doesn't try to milk it. Just says it as it is: "Nope. Yep."
That scene was totally ad lib.
That’s such a great pickup line / date story! I hope you married that girl!
She liked you by the first sight and simply wanted to make a connection.
I really really hope that's true. Please tell me it is, even if it isn't, and that you now have 2 kids and are really super happy. And a dog...you have a dog.
Please tell me you married her
Isn't this the best scene ever!
We can prove your theory with a simple litmus configuration.
@@glynnthomas1328 Yeah, get on it. Do the litmus god damn configuraration
Yes!
Um... there were about 20 best scenes in this movie LOL
RIP Charles. You will be remembered forever. This movie was one of the greatest of all time.
the way he grills the old guy sitting there, LOLOLOLOL
The long look 👀👀 After he confirms hes from "Around there" is fuckin classic 🤔🤣
'litmus configururation' - Robert De Niro
Contract 2 hank. Check them out.
This scene is tremendously funny.
RIP Charles Grodin.
perfect acting, script, soundtrack and so on and so on. this movie is a masterpiece!! so good.
I like when DeNiro runs into him and his shoes squeak. Such a small detail but funny. RIP Chuck.
I agree.
It’s the little things.
1:40 -- Sounds like our man.
30. Tall
Fregoli Delusion 😂😂😂
That's him..
RIP Agent Mosely. Mr. Grodin thank you for this comedic gem.
" u from around here?" "yep". "hmm..." OMG LOL

Charles Grodin, such a talented man. Rest In Peace. 🖤

I died at the end of that! HAHAHA!
Sounds like they were describing the manager and the symbolism is perfect because his name is Bill which represents the stack of money and his last name is redwood symbolizing the red cardigan he’s clearly wearing.
Awesome. This is my favorite movie.
Mine too)
I love this scene, it's one of the funniest... all that carry on for groceries!
Charlie Russell painting in the background in the bar called “The Trail Boss”. Russell was a western artist from Montana

Legendary scene.

Under-rated hilarity!!

RIP Charles Grodin. Thank you for this stone classic!
"do you dye your hair?"
Awesome line. I about died laughing in the theater when this part came on.
Scott Boyd one of the greatest lines in the movie 😂😂😂😂😂.
It’s up there with chorizo and eggs
Charles Grodin: Master of the pregnant pause.
Always loved this scene. R.I.P. CG
Greatest movie ever. No agenda. No soy. No super heroes. No CGI. No screen tint. Just good old fashioned character driven film.
When Hollywood use to make fun movies. This is why many movies today will not stand the test if time. Like this movie will.
What a RIOT this film is. Love it!
This scene stole the whole movie as great as the rest of them are. But dammit John had me in tears with the eye contact and the way he turned to his left to speak to the older man. 😂
RIP Charles. This and "Dave" are my two favourite CG movies.
RIP to Charles Grodin Aka The Duke AKA Jonathan Mardukas
Great film
-_- Thank you for your cooperation, Bill.
One of the funniest ever movies!
R.I.P. CHARLES SIDNEY GRODIN
De Niro playing the passive role in a scene, how rare is that. I bet he just stood in silent wonder watching a master at work.
Rest in peace, Charles Grodin.
R.I.P Charles Grodin .One of THE very best.
God, I love this scene thanks for sharing!!
The serious-face silent pauses are hilarious. 🤣
One of the funniest scenes ever.
