CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Jack (Robert DeNiro) tells Jonathan (Charles Grodin) the significance of his wrist watch while warming his hands by the fire on the train ride.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Director Martin Brest, of Going in Style and Beverly Hills Cop fame, was in charge of Midnight Run. Robert De Niro stars as Jack Walsh, a hard-bitten bounty hunter offered $100,000 to bring in embezzler Jonathan Mardukas (Charles Grodin). Handcuffed to the wimpy Mardukas, Walsh assumes that the extradition trip from New York to Los Angeles will be an uneventful one. But the prisoner hasn't told Walsh the whole story: the embezzler owes $15 million to a mobster (Dennis Farina), and he's been targeted for assassination. It's a toss-up as to what is the most entertaining aspect of Midnight Run: the slam-bang action and chase sequences or the verbal byplay between DeNiro and Grodin.
CREDITS:
TM & © Universal (1988)
Cast: Robert De Niro, Charles Grodin
Director: Martin Brest
Producers: Martin Brest, William S. Gilmore, Dan York

R.I.P. Charles see you in the next life
They could have done another film as see u in the next side mainly: Sleep Silently Charles Grodin
The thing about this scene is the empathy that The Duke has for Jack even while Jack is trying to take him back into custody. When he says, "I don't think she's coming back", he says it as a concerned friend giving someone the hard truth that they need to hear. Well-acted by both of them.
Yeah, the growing friendship and the comedic (but not unrealistic) banter between them is the key to the quality of this film. And the music fits it as well !
next time you watch it, go into it with this idea: the duke is actually jack's guardian angel....he could escape anytime he wants...he stays to guide jack down the right path, and help him get over his regret.....it culminates in the final scene, where the duke basically disappears into thin air
This was SUCH a great film. So funny, with at least 75 memorable lines. DeNiro & Grodin were a terrific duo.
Any time I find myself still thinking about a girl who's long gone from my life, I hear the Duke's voice saying "Just get yourself a new watch..." Love this freakin' movie.
ain't that the truth
I've thought of it a couple of times after being separated from my wife. So many men can relate to this scene.
I agree with you guys. It can be really to tough to lose someone you love. That scene really hits home for me as well.
You're right...going thru it now, not easy. I think I need to get a new watch...
@@chrispap4957 keep ya head up, its the sign of being a man
RIP to Charles Grodin. One of the greats.
‘I don’t think she’s coming back...sometimes you just have to let go...just get yourself a new watch’
How many men can relate to these words? From personal experience, it hurts even more when you do get a new watch, and think you’re truly happy, only to one day realise you need to let go all over again and find a new one once more 😔 Love this movie.
I can relate. 2 years ago a girl i dated gave me a t shirt of the universal monsters. At that time it was the nicest thing a girl ever gave me because we had the same interests and a lot in common.
At 2:41, " In the next life"... R.I.P. Charles Grodin
See You in the Next Life, Charles
Amid all the brilliant humor throughout the movie, it's scenes like this one between Jack & John that make it an all around masterpiece. Anyone who's a De Niro fan but hasn't seen Midnight Run is missing out on one of his greatest roles.
I couldn't agree more. Definitely one of his best roles.
His GREATEST role )) I even think he said this was his favorite movie....
If you haven't seen midnight run, you're definitely not a deniro fan
This scene and DeNiro seeing his daughter again are topnotch by everyone.
What a great scene. Kinda helped me move on from my ex. I was like jack. Kept thinking she was coming back. Thanks for the advice Charles grodin. So hard to let go for someone u love but a time comes when u gotta move on. So sad
We all wish sometimes an ex can come back but in the end we don't want them to come back after a bad break up. I thought there was a chance but after the way my ex hurt me. I dont want her back ever.

Farewell Charles, and thanks for the laughs.
Such a great movie. Awesome chemistry between Deniro and Grodin! This is in my top ten of best movies ever!
Yep definitely a top 10 ever
Top 5 for me, including godfather, gotti 96, no country for old men, where eagles dare.
Great scene. Both hilarious and touching at the same time. Kudos to DeNiro, Grodin, and Martin Brest!
It's amazing how Midnight Run managed to seamlessly integrate action, hilarity, and genuine emotion. Seriously one of my all-time favourites.
And Planes, Trains, and Automobiles
I know how you feel Jack....it's bad.
One of my favorite movie ever. Cheers from Italy.
Greatest onscreen chemistry in a movie ever!
This movie was very special to me my wife was pregnant carrying my son she laughed so hard I thought she was gonna go into labor Josh Groban and Robert De Niro are hilarious in that movie rest in peace Charles
When actors acted and it seemed so damn real
It kinda does
annnnd kinda doesnt seem/feel real, but when ones life and adventures are lived through the visions told them through a screen they have little to compare as they imagine themselves there. These clips to them are like old family films. Familiar and nostalgic. When the book of life was still quite open. Not yet corrupted completely by the hypnogogia of the hollywood wand. DEW drops ripples cross minds eyes lost. Tossed calcified and glossed over a scientific divide. The valley betwixt hides the hidden fixed sides. ways. lies laid. props shellacked. glossy to last. presently pathetic. product if past.
yup, 80's and 90's flicks are still the best ..RIP charles grodin.. and yaphet kotto
@@jimjones4838 F*k the 90s. I can name a dozen 60s and 70s movies that were better.
@@burntreynoldz7885 Done spouting nonsense or is that all you can do with your English degree?
This movie is part of me.... I laugh and cry at various scenes.... #1 for me of all time, RIP Mr Grodin.
This scene solidifies the relationship of the two of them ...they have a mutual admiration even though they’re adversaries
Charles Grodin is a great comedic actor.
Sadly we just lost him...
@@abcun17 R.I.P.
Including Yaphet Kotto two months ago last year
My favorite seen in the whole film, the dialogue, the little light and warmth the fire provides, it's created a majestic bonding opportunity for Jack and the Duke and you finally realized they have become friends, it's beautiful!
i love your comment
One of the best comments I've ever read in my whole life..
What a great goddamn movie.
That's goddamn right. A movie with a beating heart in the guise of an action movie. Exciting and intimate at the same time.
@landgazr Damn right! It's this and Lethal Weapon that share that special quality of an action comedy with a beating heart, intimacy and character driven.
RIP Charles Grodin. This movie is always going to be my old watch.
This a great American film.
This is comedy gold right here.
....I often watch this old movie more than my other collection of favorite old movies, it's got such talent all the way through. :)
A touching scene where we find out about Jack's secret lust for chickens.
I read somewhere that Grodin improvised those lines about the chickens and De Niro played along. It wasn’t in the script
Grodins up in heaven showing God how to do the litmus configuration! Lol rip Charles! One of my favorite movies!don't make them like this anymore! Dennis and Yaphet gone also!Stay safe people!
One of the best relationship movies out there! Grodin and De Niro inhabit their roles and deliver comedy and drama in large dollops. Excellent supporting cast, great script and direction. I particularly like Elfman's musical ideas. He adds a subtle layer of emotion in several scenes, like introducing a quiet piano at 1:57 here. A fun film!
How crazy, I just finished watching this movie for the first time, came to rewatch some scenes and find out the actor died just a few days ago. Wild. RIP.
one of the most underrated movies ever
I read that much of the dialog was improvised in this film. I think this scene may be one of them as it comes across so smoothly, like they were just having a conversation, and the laughs seems very genuine.
R.I.P. "The Duke". See ya in the next life.
When I saw this in the theater in ‘88 I just laughed & laughed. Probably more than any movie I’d ever seen except maybe Duck Soup.
Very underrated movie, yet one of the best movies i've ever watched...
how did Robert not laugh in the beginning mocking his voice? That was hilarious?
Yeah me too. It feels like everything good about 80s movies, compressed into one beautiful movie.
And, not yet.
Martin Best asked the Duke to try to make Rob laugh and tell a story about chicken!
The greatest piece of blues ever put on screen
2:40, Rest In Peace Charles Grodin.
Great acting… great writing, awesome scene
Scenes like that are what's so good about this movie that even though they were on the run, they could share great moments like that on a freight train.
I know how you feel Jack. Its time to find our-self a new watch
The irony for me is that I’m in a similar circumstance with a girl who was special to me and actually gave me a silver watch as a gift for coaching her and the women’s team. I haven’t gotten a new watch yet but finding the right moment to let someone have it !!
I decided to never wear new watch, never felt this peaceful and calm in my life before
classic movie with a deep meaning
..such an emotional piece.....
2:20 lol best line
I like the bit about the chickens.
people miss the point of this being an under-rated movie, and say it should be the greatest. well i love the fact it not too 'mainstream' and is a hidden gem. its the greatest under-rated movie!
See you in the next life, Grodin. RIP
The backstory of the watch was Robert DeNiro's idea. The majority of this scene is improvised, especially the animal bit at the start. Brest wanted to see if they'll crack up laughing.
There's a shortage of perfect movies out there... this is one of them!
One of my favorite movies
I love when The Duke does both of their voices, then the talk about the chickens breaks the silence lol. That goes back to what The Duke said about him (You have 2 forms of expression-silence and rage.)
I definitely agree wit everyone. Very underrated movie. Has to b one of the best comedy movies ever made. Funny as hell.
To me the main duo was speaking about friendship that's what my mum says to me.
See you in the next life Charles, and thank you for the wonderful movie moments.
The line about the chickens was great.
I've got Godfather part 2, as the numero uno movie ever. Not necessarily my favorite, simply the best in overall terms of quality. My favorites? The Day of the Jackal, Apocalypto, Three o'Clock High and of course this magnificent gem. Pure, genuine entertainment and film and acting craftmanship of the highest order and a viewing experience where your only regret comes from not being able to relive a first encounter with the movie.
Ah yes, Apocalypto - a great one.
Rest in peace Sir. And thank you
love that movie, truly a masterpiece.
The Duke's startled look around after he goes "Jack-WHAT?" kills me. Like he's indignant at his own one-sided conversation.
This was improv. the duke had to get de niro to laugh and nailed it ont he second take
RIP Chuck
Great male bonding scene, up there with the Jaws scene.
What a beautifully written scene. Poor old Jack Walsh still in love with his ex-wife. Through all the machismo and tough guy talk the Duke sees his vulnerability and decides to let him down gently.
Rest in peace, Mr Grodin.
Great scene.
So long Charles Grodin... see you in the next life
R.I.P Charles Grodin!
terrific acting in this scene. grodin is sorely missed as a screen presence. and de niro? after this it was a rapid descent. i don't know what happened to the guy from this movie, but it's sad seeing him flailing about in trite like 'grudge match' and focker sequels. sad.
johnulcer ....You're right.
What? Descent after that. U serious or dumb? Awakenings, cape fear, goodfellas, heat, a bronx tale, frankenstein, casino, wag the dog, jackie brown. What an ignorant here.
I totally agree about De Niro's downfall. Anyway it's mostly also Hollywood's fault. No new ideas since 15 years. What they are capable to do now it's just commercial mediocre material. Prequels, sequels, remakes...and 95% of them are bad. Tremendous lack of ideas.
@@Aman-nk5uq I am replying to an old comment but you're right, he still had good roles in the 90s. I would say the real decline started after 1995. That was the year he made Casino and Heat, two of his finest films, but the great films were fewer and further between after that.
After watching this movie over thirty years ago I wanted to go to the US and catch a freight train just like these guys...But apparently it's illegal.😢
Girl rejected me while I was watching this no joke. Lets say that I was prepared.
RIP Charels Grodin. And yeah....over the years.......I've seen a few chickens I'd have taken a shot at.
Damn bro, this scene was pretty good!
Seen a lot of De Niro's movies, I guess I'm gonna have to check this one out too.
Great scene all round
Great film, greatest scene.
“In the next life” ❤️
These clips are not "edited", love it!
Truth is if this came out today, the younger generation would be tearing it to pieces..smh
Glad I'm not from this generation and that I got to live through the better ones
Ain't that the truth! We grew up in different times, thank God!
“ yeah, in the next life “
I love that deniro laugh
now in this scene...he's using phycology...on jack played buy... Robert dinero...best action comedy...most of his movies are...make a sequel...!😯
best movie
Trains have regularly scheduled stops...
RIP Charles Grodin.
RIP Charles Grodin!
I’m still waiting …..
Still have the same watch ……
Like Jack, part of me doesn’t want to let that old watch go ☹️
"Somewhere in the back of my mind I keep thinking were gonna wind up together again, I don't know why. I'm still hanging on, I'm still waiting around."
"I don't think she's comin' back."
"Yeah, I don't either. I don't either."
Charles Was the man in this movie
Despite the 1980s soundtrack and chase scene hoopla this ends up being one of the great buddy comedy road movies of all. Scenes like this gave it a heart and a soul that make it rewatchable. RIP Mr Grodin and Mr Farina who preceded you.
God, I miss marriage! Garden de Rio!
Rip the Duke
I'm living it, she's not coming back.
THE NEXT LIFE. Damn right!!!😊
im dying this scene
This scene for one reason or another makes me think of my girlfriend. “Maybe in the next life.”
Under different I think, probably still would hate each other 😅
Classic movie
We were supposed to watch this for my film class. Unfortunately the viewing was canceled as there were complaints about the problematic content. Specifically mentioned was abelism (when they run and jump onto the train, and when the taxi driver at the end calls deniro "crazy"), racism (Mosely FBI agent), sexism (all women in the movie are merely ornaments), hate speech, and gun violence.
